here's to never growing up
Remember back in the day when you were a child and you would swing from the playground toys during recess or just at the park. It was so big compared to your tiny body. Well, Danny couldn't remember much of that since the toys in the yard from the orphanarium were not in the best condition even given the times and the fact Danny never got super close to the other kids until Eric appeared in front of him with that ever-lasting goofy grin of his. But now, Danny stood in front of the mixture of plastic and metal structure and it looked so small, which he expected. He was taller now, but still lithe and like a twig.

Danny was in the grounds of the school Penelope aka Pen, Penny or PenPen if you were Eric, taught at although her kids were much younger than his. Ever so often he would wander so they could go home together, usually when she needed help with something for her classes and Danny being weird and a dork offered to help right off the bat usually. Plus, it kept him out of trouble as some people so eloquently put it. He hadn't gone into the school quite yet though, not remember quite right if she had a small meeting after classes finished today or not, but either way it would take her a little bit to get ready, something regarding an art-thing or something this time not that Danny minded at all.

His feet crunched against the rocky ground of the play area, "Why rocks off all things still?" He wondered aloud to no one at all since the area was deserted. Either way, Danny found himself under the monkey bars and without much stretching at all, he reached up and pulled himself up on the bars and then swung onto the top. Of course he would never condone children of these ages to do such a thing but they weren't around to make Danny give the impression that it was ok, so who was there to judge him? Oh probably just the few teachers who were leaving and probably Penelope if she came out to find him if he didn't go in soon. But then again...he never did play much on the big toys in his days and Danny hadn't really grown up in some senses. being serious all the time was boring but he could manage it when it matters. Life was too short to be all business and serious Danny figured, even if he did look like he was twenty-something but was more into his eighties.

It would probably not have surprised Penelope either when she came out to see Danny chilling on the toys meant for the students who attended the school.

Finger painting, test taking, sharing, learning to read, putting on silly plays about fairy tales, mathematics…it seemed an odd mix up of lessons but Penelope was rather good at the whole thing really, managing the eclectic mix of tapping into children’s creativity while at the same time pushing the agenda of the adults who said that they were looking out of the good of the children. It wasn’t hard to tell which part of the process she hated the most, but after a few decades of being a teacher she found that she was best at finding ways around the demands without sacrificing the children’s own minds, at least for one year in her own classroom before she sent them on to others. She was always protective of her children, she’d never had any of her own blood, but her children were numerous, she remembered each on, though some like Linds had found a more permanent place in her heart.

Of course that didn’t mean Penelope still didn’t try to do as much as she could for the others. This afternoon it was costumes for an upcoming assembly, brightly colored taffetas and small petticoats pinned together, handfuls of costume jewelry tangled in a Ziploc bag, and floppy hats with garish patters stacked up on all of that as she did her best to bundle them together for the walk home. She’d no doubt be cornering Linds to help her finish them that night, but for now she sat in her classroom wondering where the help she’d already enlisted earlier was. Looking around at the clock the hands of it confirming what she knew already, he was running late.

A heavy sigh escaped her as she stood up from her spot on the floor, wandering through the brightly painted room before she stopped at the windows, catching sight of something rather uncommon for the playground, but oh so familiar to herself in terms of just what the uncommon thing was. Standing there a few moments she shook her head, a smile tugging onto her lips. Like a bunch of big kids…that’s what they are. Penelope thought to herself, though really that was part of the reason she’d taken such a liking to them after they’d first met. Stepping out the back door of her classroom she started to walk across the asphalt, stopping at the sea of gravel as she looked up, ”You know, I tell five year olds not to do that simply because the sixth graders do…what will they do when they see one of Miss Kelly’s ‘brothers’ doing it?” Stepping out onto the gravel, the Mary-Janes she wore sunk down into the loose surface.

Climbing up a rung or two she reached for the bars, leaning a little, but not pulling herself up, the skirt a blouse hardly attire for monkey bars as she glanced around, ”You’re late, how long have you been out here playing?” She looked around, from the height they were at she could see the stretch of black asphalt and colorful plastic before everything was cut off by the chain linked fence. It was so small to her, but then again she’d had year and years to grow and realize the world was so much bigger than what she’d always known as a child.

Danny would admit that he was sort of jealous that Penelope was able to hang around little children all day, but then again he wasn't very well equipped to teach the little munchkins because he was a kid himself and would end up playing with them than teaching them anything. It was probably better he dealt with college kids even if he got weird looks from teachers and students about how young he looked and already at this level...if they only knew the truth, but that would just freak everyone out and that panic didn't need to happen. Plus, the sheer size of the classrooms here made Danny look like a lanky giant which was just funny to imagine. He lost his sense of time being in the playground, just because he hadn't been near one in such a long time even with his parkour hobby he usually ended up on higher platforms and low rooftops for more of a challenge.

But of course, Danny had arrived a tiny bit early, aka about thirty seconds before being "on time" to pick up Penelope but he was also easily sidetracked and everyone in the house knew that so it should have been expected. The feel of the cold metal in his hands was nice to the warm air that signaled the beginning of the warmer season that was rolling in. His head shot up when he heard the oh-so familiar voice of the school teacher. "Eheh...try and not be able to reach?" It was bad humor, but that was Danny through and through. "Plus, it's not like they know me that well...oh, wait yes they do, I visit more don't I?" He rambled on per usual, but his smile widened when Penelope opted to get onto the big toy herself by the monkey bars.

"Plus, they aren't around I know better than that...sometimes." He tried to reason, but knowing Penelope it wouldn't fly, just another thing to love about her. Compared to the University this was just like a miniature model of a world for people like Penelope and Danny. But to the kids it was vast and wide, something Danny kind of missed even though he slipped into childish behavior every once in a while. "Not long, I was actually on time to be honest. But I got side tracked...obviously, at least I am here though that gets me something right?" He hummed out before perching himself to dangle over the edge of the bars in order to drop down. As his feet crunched against the gravel, he rubbed his hands from them rubbing against the metal bars.

"But what do you need help with tonight? I don't have my own school things to deal with tonight so I am all yours...except I do need to do one thing at some point in the night...technically." He questioned stepping over to get closer to the other nephilim before they headed inside to grab her things. Sometimes Danny thought that they should have invested in a vehicle of some kind for situations like this, but he liked walking too much so it probably wouldn't have been the best investment.

”You are truly a terrible, terrible influence on young minds Danny-Boy, I honestly can say my children know you well enough by name while Eric is still “the blond one” and Linds is “Miss Kelly’s Sister” if that gives you any idea how often you’re around.” She was shorter than Danny by a bit, but standing on the ladder she at least was tall enough to look over the tops of the bars, leaning here, ”Sometimes, yes…sometimes…that describes it fairly well I think. Then again, they manage to hurt themselves as is, or at least try to. I think it’s almost ironic that some of the parents use ‘guardian angel’ to talk about me sometimes.” The words were both ironic and a little bitter sweet, humans knew so little and yet said way too much that meant nothing…or at least the other adults did.

Grabbing the bar she let herself off the ladder, dangling from the monkey bars as she swung back and forth a little, her toes barely brushing the ground. “I’m glad you’re here, but sadly, no gold stars for only making it to the playground. I’m surprised you aren’t worried about some of the professors or students seeing you here. I know some of their children go to this school. I thought image was everything in the fun and fantastic world of adult education?” She made a face, dropping down to the gravel…it was nice having another teacher in the house with her, but sometimes she wondered how Danny went about dealing with it all.

”Costumes…I need an extra set of hands to finish some of them for Friday. We’re doing our own version of ’Twelve Dancing Princesses’ but since we only have ten girls in the class we had to make a few princes to dance, and some of the parents helped with outfits, but not as many as I would like who can think beyond safety pinning shiny things to t-shirts.” She let them both into the classroom, years of drawings and class photos decorated the walls, handing him a bundle of costumes before she grabbed her own. Thankfully children were small and so were their clothes, that much at least would be helpful, and the walk wasn’t too long.

”So...technically what is it you have to do Danny? Anything that’s going to keep you out all night?” She led them outside, locking up her classroom before waving to the few other teachers who lingered in the building long after the parents and children and filed out. While they were all several decades old in one way or another Penelope was still very much the mothering type to Danny and the other two. "Will you be around for dinner tonight at least?"

Danny couldn't help but smile widely when Pen pointed out that her kids, even though they changed every year knew him by name. He liked visiting Penelope at work when his classes were different and he didn't have to be cooped in the building. But that the was pretty much the reason Danny taught at the University and not little kids; they would nothing from him that would be labeled "good curriculum" plus he always ended coming in during the day where they had only a little bit of time left and could have a little more freedom on what to do. "This is why I cram information into adult minds, although they don't laugh with me very often until about a month in."

As he climbed down from the monkey bars, Danny rubbed the back of his neck, a weird habit of his for several situations, but he made a face to show that he questioned why parents called her a guardian angel to the kids as well but she was in a weird way even if she was a nephilim. She kept not only those kids in line but Danny, Eric and Linds as well...or attempted to at some points. Of course, sometimes they succeeded in dragging her into something silly that they did, like moving in with them. He stopped and snapped his fingers, "Shucks, but I don't care about image. Everyone things I am this like twenty-something teaching kids the exact same age and I get enough weird looks about that." He huffed out, the other professors kind of knocked him around for that and the students didn't take him seriously until he started lecturing. He would admit that that some students definitely had other thoughts about him as well and more than a few times they believed he was just a TA and well...things got interesting; but no one would ever believe that Danny was nearing eighty-five.

Danny stuffed his hands into his pockets as they walked to the classrooms, feeling like a giant again once they got in. "Sounds fun, I'll try not to get hot glue everywhere this time." He chuckled at the bad joke, sure costumes wasn't one of the things he was good at, but when Pen needed help he tried to step up when he could. He just got his arms out in time to grab onto the big pile of clothes he was handed. Who knew dress could get so....fruffy. "Hey, safety pinning things to shirts could totally pass for something good....sometimes." He half-ass defended, knowing it would probably earn him an eye roll from the woman or something.

He followed Penelope as they left the school and then readjusted the clothes so he could see where he was going, "Wha? Oh no, staying in actually per usual. Just gotta -- look up somethings, shouldn't take long really." He explained but actually didn't explain every well at all. Plus, Danny didn't get out very much anyways outside his "circle" Danny didn't create good conversations on his own."And miss your cooking? That'd be like, sacrilegious or something I bet."

”Those kids will laugh at anything, and you do get them to laugh. If you ever change your mind about adults you’re welcome to join me here. They’re honest about everything, even things you wish they wouldn’t be. They’re still pure.” Penelope never hid her dislike for adults at times, of course she was polite, she was an angel in every sense of the word except by actual blood when it came to putting her best foot forward, she just also knew what parents would sometimes do to children so young to make sure they didn’t become anything the adult didn’t want. ”Don’t give me that look, I don’t like being called it, they just think you kiss a few scraped knees, make a quick save or two, get a kid to like doing something…and they think the world of you.”

She chuckled softly as Danny spoke of the looks he tended to get. She didn’t argue one little bit, she was older than him by a decade or so, he had such a babyface to her it was no surprise he got odd looks. He, Eric, and Linds had become the oddest makeshift family she’d come upon, and she’d never been happier, though she would admit she’d given them all quite a few odd looks when she’d first come upon them…and really she’d never stopped with the odd looks.

She clutched a few costumes to herself, her teacher’s bag slung across her shoulders, a sheer veil attached to a plastic tiara on top of her head as it was a bit too long to just carry in her arms trailing after her, ”Well I’m going to try to just make you cut things and not glue. Goodness I think we still have pieces of the last project stuck around the house.” She nudged him playfully with a smile. For a professor he was good at what he did, for a very odd adoptive father he was more capable than she’d ever imagined, but when it came to putting crafts together she worried for his well-being. She gave a very heavy sigh as he defended the small silver safety pins that often led to more pricked fingers than fixed garments, ”I know…but these kids deserve to have the full experience. Their parents have no trouble forcing them into piano lessons, languages, sports, but when it comes to this they’re less than enthused as if art is something less. I want them to have a happy memory.” She squeezed the costumes to her tightly, her harangued look softening into something wistful.

However before she could become lost in her own memories of a lost childhood Danny was doing a fantastic job at being as vague as possible, ”Hmmm…just looking something up? Research?” Her curiosity was peaked as her lips split into a smile and she edged in closer, ”Well as much as you flatter my cooking that doesn’t change that I’m now wanting to know what you’re up to tonight? What things? Maybe I can help? I’ve been through the education system enough to be good at research, and the internet just has made things so much easier in the last few decades.” Walking along the street with him towards their house she wasn’t about to let go of what the other was looking into, besides, if she could help him it would be in some way payback for his own help on her project tonight.

Danny grinned again, because let's admit Danny never really frowned often even when he was troubled. He hid the everything behind the grin or laugh, he didn't like to be sad he dealt with that for so long in the orphanage before Eric plopped on the other side of the table. "I'll keep that in mind." He chuckled out, even though Danny probably wouldn't do very well teaching kids, some young adults that came through his class held very good conversations and little debates were common in his classroom about certain things. He was content with them for now and dropping into Penelope's class every once in a while to help her out or disrupting the last few minutes of the school day with goofy things. He let out a deep laugh at her response calling out his look, [s]"Just the world of kindergarten." He mumbled out through dying giggles.

Danny had mentally and physically shaken off memories of what he unintentionally got himself into sometimes with students, nothing ever bad happened but that didn't mean people didn't try and that was just plain awkward in all senses of the word. He turned back holding the clothes as Penelope locked up the room since he tended to make large strides walking home he didn't wanna leave her behind. That's when he saw the tiara on her head and wished he could reach his phone for a picture just for the hell of it, but then if he did that Penelope would most likely force him into wearing something silly and that was just a level of no that he wouldn't get into. "Fiiiine." He huffed out, because although she was right it was taking the fun out of everything but then again that meant Danny didn't need to clean it up later either.

Danny could really agree with Penelope's counter argument, being in the orphanage Danny didn't get a real chance to have fun like kids these days did in school at a young age, then again he was in that place in the 1920's and there was a ton of changes since then throughout the entire world so he didn't expect it to be the same in the whole scope of things. It was good that someone was able to put forth the effort to give these kids something to remember and share in their later years.

Danny was sort of thankful that they didn't live very far from either school because carrying all the costumes started to feel heavier and heavier the more they walked and investing in a vehicle just for the sake of it all seemed more and more like a good idea. But it was too late for that now, "....Yeah, something like that." He mumbled out, because honestly he tried not to get anyone in the house to involved in what he was hacking into just in case something ever bad happened. He wouldn't risk getting any of them in trouble just for knowing about what he was doing behind closed doors. Although now he had mentioned it to the other nephilim there was really no quelling her curiosity and wanting to help. "Dang, thought I caught you on that one." He joked out, switching the clothes once again to another arm. "It's not really...legal." He mumbled out the last word quietly, pretty much they knew what he got into sometimes but never really talked about it.

Penelope didn’t chastise Danny for his amusement, for the giggles that spilled from him. That was one thing she’d have to admit, there was never a dull moment with how amusing he and the other two could be. Before she’d met them she’d had up such strong walls, but slowly they’d just demolished them bit by bit until nothing remained of her defenses. They really had become a family in the decades they’d had together, she was hard pressed to remember a time before them when she’d been so happy.

With everything locked up the day was officially over for the most part, turning to Danny she rolled her eyes again, ”You say that so sweetly Danny, almost as good as the kids do. Besides, I’m pretty sure the last thing our house needs is one more thing to clean or fix right now. Personally I’m just surprised you didn’t glue yourself to something college boy. I guess time teaches us all sorts of things.” She teased him, nudging him with her elbow. The several blocks back to their home were usually an easy walk, but glancing at the other nephilim she noted he seemed to struggle as they reached the halfway point. ”Don’t tell me you’re already ready to give up there?” She chuckled before continuing on across the street now, people waiting in their cars for lights to changes, rushing to get away from their jobs it seemed and to the safety of home.

As they got closer to the house Penelope slowly noted the reluctance of Danny to tell her what it was he was doing. Slowly it began to dawn on her just what he could be hiding, a long, drawn out sigh leaving her lips. ”Daniel Elliiot Masters…” She started in, tone chiding as she turned to look at him more, keeping pace with his long strides with several of her own small steps, ”I cannot begin to imagine…I just mean---“ The young looking woman let out a sharp huff, shoulders dropping, ”The whole point of working legit jobs is to not have to do not-legit work for money. I don’t know how many times we have this talk. I'm guessing I should just really give up shouldn't I?” Turning away from him she kept walking, the house coming into sight now as she shifted the costumes around in her arms to search in her bag for her house key.

”Why can’t you use the net for what other people use it for? Buy books and movies…go look at dirty pictures…oooor find a date.” She overly emphasized the last word, eyes darting over to the scrawny man, ”When was the last time you’ve been out for a date if ever?”

Penelope always had a way of getting right to the point, and really Lindsey got that for her as well since the eldest nephilim of the group still joined in when Lindsey was at a relatively young age. She called Eric and Danny out on a lot of things, especially being a bad influence. Although her comment made him flush a deep red that could be rivaled by a tomato and also an eye roll of overdramatic proportions. "I can't exactly date a student there Pen, guy or girl that's like against some moral codes there. Plus I don't need more weird looks from everyone, I don't like the attention." Swaying lightly with the elbow nudge, even though it barely pushed him over at all. He huffed a bit as he switched arms with the clothes, sending Penelope a look with a raised eyebrow, "Wha? Oh nah, I'm good. Just used to carrying stacks of papers, not clothes."

He picked up the pace to cross the street since they were almost home Danny just wanted to get there and do something that didn't require a ton of brainpower like his lectures could be. It was nice to help out Penelope not only to see the kids but it relaxed him in a sort of way, he didn't have to think about what would go on the next day or what papers needed graded, just a simple-minded task was a nice change of pace.

Danny visibly flinched when Penelope used his full name, she only did that when any of them were being complete goofs out in public or did something wrong....or was about to, Danny swore Penelope could like, see the future sometimes or something. He let her get out her thoughts about his side hobby, because that is what it was now for the most part. Plus he taught a computer course and needed to be caught up on a lot of information since technology changed everyday. "Yeah...probably." He gave a sly smile over to the woman giving an honest answer, which it was true; this conversation was nothing old between the two but Danny never stopped but never got to crazy either as to raise suspicion.

"I don't do it for money anymore, I do have to be caught up on technological aspects of things for my job, ya know?" He tried to reason with her, and it was the same reason every time in the past few years, in the beginning Danny did things to help them all out but that came to an end as soon as he too found a legit job. He saw Penelope searching for her key and dug into his own pocket and fished out his set first as they ascended the steps. "I do, regular internet is boring, plus we always have a movie night Pen, you know that." He mumbled, jamming his key into the lock and opening the door. As he entered, he turned to playfully glare at Penelope as he held open the door for her. "I have been on dates before thank you. I've just been busy that's all." He grumped out closing the door when she was clear of it.

Along the city streets her shoes clicked gently on the concrete, several of her own steps keeping pace with his stride, huffing as she carried her costumes close as businesses and apartments turned into suburbs she listened to Danny argue with her. Penelope resisted the urge to snort at his crimson face, her only response was a soft hum of thought. Morals, what did they mean to them really? Penelope and the others weren’t evil, but in some ways they’d each seen the darker side of life because of what they were born as. Good people, that’s what they tried to be in this lift. ”Well maybe you should get your students to put on a play and you can get use to taffeta instead of copy paper, I’m sure that makes those lectures of yours way more entertaining.” The words she finally settled on, feeling a little bad for teasing him so much, though she had reasons.

The sun was sinking lower in the sky, the bright blue changing its hue as golds and pinks streaked the clouds overhead. It was nice to see home in the distance, to know soon the place would be filled with noises that were staff meetings or screaming children. Already she was thinking about what she’d be cooking, really with as much money as she’d managed to save up over the years she could spend a few of them at home just working from there, but she always worried sooner or later none of them would have a need for a mother figure around at all.

Danny managed to distract her from that thought all on his own however as he brought up the illegal activity. When he’d first started doing it Pen had always felt the weight of concern fall on her shoulders. What would happen if one of them went to jail, or worse, got mixed up in something they shouldn’t have. It was hard enough flying under the angel radar at times in this city as well as the human one, his smile did little to calm her worry though she finally gave up in trying to keep the reproachful tone. Danny was nearing a century old sooner rather than later and at this point the family was set in some of their ways.

”Really, you mean there are no legit ways to do that?” She kept her own smile under control until he moved to get the door for them, cracking a little one as she ducked her head and went inside. It seemed quiet enough in the house to tell her the others weren’t home yet. ”Oh and don’t think I’m not going to use this to demand my own movie choice on the next night we watch one.” She joked, setting down the costumes on the kitchen table as she walked through the house, depositing her bag on the back of a chair. ”You know why I’m worried though, right Danny? I don’t like lecturing you to lecture.”

Going to the fridge she began to look through it for things to make for dinner, better to get it prepared now before work began and everyone crowded in, as he topic turned to dating once again she smiled slyly and straightened up, setting out items on the counter, ”Not that busy, you know maybe you should go out on a date. I know a few people at my school who are single, not to mention parents. Do you have a type? Tall? Fair? Good sense of humor? Anything?” She turned, leaning back against the counter with arms crossed, walking the line in her subtly, ”Maybe you can tell me while you help make some dinner? Surely there is someone out there who can put up with you….”

Danny was used to the teasing, at least with his family he knew they did because they knew him best and he duked it out right back. He was clumsy, a full on dork and more than a little awkward. So when Penelope continued with it the words rolled off his back, plus there was no reason to hold a grudge when people said things to him that were in a teasing manner. He didn't need any of those dark feelings clouding his mind; although many had lived longer than him, he had lived through too much change through the decades to harbor any resentment. "Oh yes, I bet they would just love that, especially the Dean." He rolled his eyes sarcastically, but cracking a grin.

He knew a lecture was coming his way when he mention the illegal activity, really he didn't want to tell her but he asked and Danny couldn't lie to Pen. He tried once, failed miserably. He really had cut down from before, he didn't have to cover any of their tracks as much anymore and they had settled in a great place. But Danny's curiousity was never sated, plus he had to keep up with the technology and that included the not-so legal activity that went along with it. He could be proud to say that he had never done anything horrible or hurtful to someone like some hackers were known to do. "Not this no. Sorry Pen."

As she ducked under his arm, Danny rolled his eyes and laughed of course she would pull that card. "Yes Pen, whatever you say." Knowing it could be an interesting choice, but he would keep his mouth shut no matter what she chose, be brought that on himself and Linds and Eric would just have to suck it up. He let the door close itself and he wandered to drop the clothes he held onto the side of the couch, sliding his own back on the floor resting against the couch as well. He caught up with Penelope in the kitchen a little bit later. "Yeah, I know. It's why I don't go out and blatantly say what and when I am doing it. If anything did happen then you guys wouldn't get in trouble." He emphasized the 'if' on the sentence, because he could never be sure what could happen on those internet excursions.

He really loathed when people got on his case about getting out in the public. He got out sometimes, but usually it was with the family. It wasn't that he wasn't anti-social it's just Danny never did well with the dating world. Sure over the years he had some girlfriends but the longest was a year-ish...maybe, he couldn't honestly remember. He sighed slightly begrudgingly as she pressed to get him into the dating life. "I'm just not...not good with other people. I babble about stupid topics and never stay on it for long, all of you know that. And before you say it, school is different, I am supposed to babble there." He explained...or tried to, knowing Penelope would probably try to set it up on something.

It would go unsaid that Danny was single mainly because of Eric, but nothing in a horrible way. They never liked that they were so close that it was scary, plus if any of them really knew that he and the blonde were fathers together would make them ten times more uncomfortable, thus why they introduced Lindsey as Danny's sister when she got older and to people who didn't know about them being all nephilims, which also was on the need-to-know list. Plus, more than a few times they had told Danny that the 'relationship' he and Eric had could not be competed with, which only baffled Danny even more.

Sometimes between both Danny and Eric in this house Penelope felt like banging her head against a brick wall. By now most of those around them just assumed she’d be use to it, but she was just as stubborn as the other nephlilims in the house. As they both got settled in for the evening with bags and costumes being laid down off of tired shoulders she sighed softly, scratching her head a little. ”You say things like ‘yes Pen’ and all I can think is that you’re just trying to get me to drop the subject. I’m glad you want to protect us from getting into trouble, but Danny-boy…” Watching him when he came into the kitchen she gave him a wistful little smile, ”Who will take care to protect you then from getting into trouble?”

Reaching over to him she ruffled his hair, or at least the bits she could reach before pulling back, going to work on prepping dinner. There was leftover spaghetti sauce and cheese, looking around she grabed out the large pot followed by a canister of thick, flat noodles, handing them to Danny, ”Lasagna…go boil these and preheat the oven.”The tiny nephilim order gently, shooing him away from her part of the counter, going back to the fridge she grabbed out an eggplant, already washing and skinning it over the sink as the discussion turned to Danny dating. Penelope knew it wasn’t a topic they hadn’t visited before, but every few years to a decade she’d try again with him. over the hiss of running water and the rhythmic chops of the knife cutting through to the cutting board she listened to him explain why it wasn’t possible.

”And oddly enough it’s that kind of personality that we all like here. Or at least what we like about you. Then again, I was the last one of us to come around, you and Eric have been together the longest. Surely that says plenty about you. It’s not you it’s the people you meet. Nothing is wrong with you if that is what you think. It’s more about the right person.” Penelope waved the blade around like a pointer, punctuating her thoughts before she went back to chopping. ”Let me live vicariously through you Danny, between my thirty children and you three I need someone to bring me fun stories of the world beyond the house. Why don’t you and Eric just go out…go to a bar and enjoy being out around other people. Have some fun and maybe he can introduce you to some people you might like?” Of course the young woman resisted teasing any further on the topic of Eric, she’d been with the family for decades now and she’d been waiting for the melodrama between those two to turn into something more than what little she’d seen. In a way it was a distraction from her own life, watching the others in her family live theirs out…

The sun sank lower in the sky, the kitchen cast in a golden light as Penelope moved up behind Danny, wrapping and arm around from behind him as she let her chin rest on his shoulder, ”We’re in a good spot now in life, can’t hurt to enjoy it. You can’t always be elbows deep in your work. Unless you’re worried about leaving me alone on movie nights, in that case it just means I get to have first pick every time…not a huge loss.” A small laugh escaped from her as she poked his side, moving to get out pans and things to finish up dinner, ”Seriously though, it seems everyone has been getting busy lately. Guess that is what happens as families get more settled, isn’t it?”

Danny chuckled and grinned in Penelope's direction even if her back was turned as she entered the kitchen. Danny was just a laughing/smiling guy and it was pretty rare to see him with a different look on his face. "I dunno, it'd would be my own fault if something ever happened. I know what I am doing and the consequences I'll just have to buck up and take it." He had been protected by the other three nephilims in their own ways, jsut like he would protect them as necessary in his own way. But again, if that ever happened Danny would deal with what when along with it, which wouldn't sit well at all with anyone in the household.

Rolling his eyes at her attempt to ruffle his hair, Danny grabbed the pot and noodles giving a mock salute to the shorter woman and turned to the other side of the kitchen with the sink and oven. He set the pot in the sink with the water running shortly afterwards before turning to the oven to do what he was told. Danny wasn't a horrible cook and tried to help Penelope often with dinner and he caught onto a few things as time passed, but he would always bow out if there was ever a comparison between the two. "Well yeah, you guys like that. Lindsey grew up with it, Eric didn't really give me a choice when we first met to be honest and I am pretty sure it just grew on you after so long. Other people usually get annoyed by it, especially when they can't get a word in...which I do...occasionally...on accident." He countered, slowing down towards the end, because it was kind of rare that Danny babbled so much and so long that no one else got a say, but he was getting better especially in class.

He turned around as the pot continued to fill, leaning against the countertop, "You can live vicariously yourself Pen, you can take time to yourself and go out you know? We could probably survive a night without you." He watched the water from the corner of his eye before turning to shut it off. He froze for a second as Penelope suggested going out with Eric to a bar or something and meeting people. He couldn't name it at all, but he had just stopped at the thought of going out with Eric and having him pick people for Danny to meet...he didn't imagine it going very well, so he just decided to not really respond to that for the moment.

While he was turned Danny felt Pen sneak up behind him and set her chin on his shoulder. "Yeah I know...just...weird ya know? Going out, was never really me in any decade ya know? Honestly the people I went out with then usually approached me first for some odd reason." Which was true, although not seen a lot in the beginning as time went on people somehow sought him out and he gave it a shot as a relationship, never lasting long however...obviously. He half turned to pull an arm back and around the woman to give a half hug in response. "Yeah, as weird of a place it was to settle down, good to think we don't have to move later on to avoid some suspicion.

”And what happens if that is jail? If you haven’t noticed, we aren’t normal. Suddenly they’ll have everything, name finger prints…then you really have to play it safe from then on.” While the world had changed in some amazing ways the last few decades since the Great Depression and several wars and conflicts beyond that, it also made the world harder to hide in without the right connections and the right amount of money. Every few years she had to switch schools, switch out documents that made it harder for people to notice that their teacher wasn’t aging. It really had become necessity to stay together, to have each other’s back. ”I trust you know what you’re doing and you know how to do it Danny, things just aren’t becoming simpler though, especially not for people like us.” Supernatural lives were not all that they were cracked up to be at times, a reality she’d come to learn very early on.

Soon the kitchen was filled with noises of the two of them working and talking, a pleasant liveliness settling into the quiet house, ”Exactly, you grew on me…you and Eric both did for that matter. I’m still surprised after that first meeting, but the point is….someone who is patient and likes you enough will wait to talk and will listen to you. That’s one of the few good things I even picked up from the girl’s home once I got older.” Happy memories before meeting the others were far and few between, most of her time spent in lessons or among the women of the home she’d been put into. Once she’d begun teacher she’d felt lighter, but it wasn’t until Danny, Eric, and Linds that she really felt truly happy, and she wanted to protect that.

Penelope scoffed, shaking her head, looking to meet Danny’s gaze to check if he was actually serious, ”Go out and do what exactly, sit at bar by myself? Go to a move and dinner on my own? You three are the only people that matter to me. Could you even imagine someone approaching me Danny? I’m not made for romance, simple as that.” She sighed, rubbing the back of her neck, going back to her work as she tried to ignore the hollow feeling in the pit of her stomach. Perhaps it was a lonely life to some people, but she’d made the family of nephilim her life, her love going to them, ”Besides, if I left for a night who knows what I’d come back to. House on fire, angels, gosh…who knows. I am stricken just by the thought. I could never leave my precious family.” It was a bit of an excuse, but she really didn’t have many people outside of her family she’d ever really spent time with if it wasn’t work.

Noting the tension that ran through his body at mention of Eric, Penelope had to hide the smile on her lips as she went to get the pan set up, checking the oven as she stood and hugged Danny. It was comforting, for now it banished the little hollow feeling she’d begun to feel in the pit of her stomach as she felt him awkwardly try to hug her back, ”Well then, it sounds like you and I will be having many more movie nights between grading papers and making children’s costumes.” Patting his shoulder she let him go, back to lining the pan with sauce, glancing up at the clock, ”So when does your illicit activities start? Shall I be bringing you dinner to your room?”

raise your glass and say
here's to never growing up
He knew the woman was right, she usually was about things pretty much the only practical mind in the house although Danny would like to think he wasn't too far behind...sometimes. He had thought about the prospect of actually being caught, more than once and it scared the crap out of Danny, it's why he backed off for a while there throughout the year. The only things he did do on a regular basis was when they had to move around, really things like that were never expedited that quickly, but no one needed to catch onto that. Danny just smirked to himself at the memory of when they would arrive at their new abode and pretty much have jobs already. "Yeah I know, I promise I don't do it as much anymore. Small things here and there, plus it's not like I leave obvious marks like most people." Still defending his stand on it all, horribly though.

"Yeah, the last person who did that was a fresh out of high school girl that nearly got me fired." He grumped out hating that memory in particular. Yeah, let's not revisit that please. It was no excuse though, Danny was just really bad at getting out and being social in general, socially awkward was the definition of Danny. He had leaned back again in order to turn off the water, picking it from the sink and onto the stove without sloshing too much water around. "What do you expect me to do then? Sound a little hypocritical there Penpen." Danny shot back reverting to Eric's nickname for the woman. Although they all appreciated Penelope always being around she shouldn't have subjected herself to just being stuck with them all the time. If she was going to force Danny out he'd drag her out with him if it came down to it.

He shot a playful glare to the woman's back as he opened the box of noodles, not yet putting them in of course, he knew better. "Hey! Let's not get dramatic here, Pen. Plus just pick a night that Linds and Eric are at work and I am home enough to lock myself up with a movie or on my computer. No craziness there." It was true, Danny could lock himself up somewhere and there would be no fire needed or random angels raining down on their house...he hoped.

He gave the other woman a small squeeze has her arms wrapped around his middle. They were really close as a family even though there were no blood ties between the four of them, a mashed together family that fit that perfect way that no one cared. Plus, these days they could make up a story about being cousins or roommates or...something, not like they hadn't played that lie before. "Sounds like a date." He grinned cheekily back at her when Penelope had finally let go to fix up her part of dinner. Simultaneously Danny had been dumping the noodles into the pot. "Nah, nothing till later. You actually have things with a deadline, mine is kind of when I find the time really." He shrugged walking over to where she was working for the moment until she told him to do something else.
