Chris never went out to find trouble, adventure was a totally different thing than trouble and personally she got offended if anyone told her it was the same thing with her. Though there weren’t many people who knew Chris well enough to say that except for her father…and he didn’t really know she was out tonight anyways.

She wasn’t finding trouble no matter what, because it was already chasing her down.

The dudebro had just looked predatory all night, Chris watched him from the group of human girls she’s influenced into letting her join them. When one didn’t really have a group of girlfriends to hang out with the powers to manipulate people came in handy when she didn’t want to go out alone. She’d gone out for drinks, dancing, and then more drinks, but the whole time she couldn’t help her gaze sliding over to the guy with the wispy soul-patch, he was dressed up, buying drinks like he had the cash, but she saw the systematic way he surveyed the women around him. He tested the water with a few women, some lingering, others wandering away with the help of other women. Chris was the daughter of Lucifer, King of Hell, she was the future Queen of this world…she knew what it looked like when someone was up to no good.

His soul dripped with sin in a way that made her itch. There were people in this world who sinned, thinking nothing wrong of what they were doing, thinking they were owed the right to. As she watched him follow after a particularly drunk woman on her way out Chris figured she was ready for a different type of fun, releasing her group of “friends” from her influence before following silently. Out into the street the guy was trying to pull the woman to his car, making jokes and acting nice as she could feel his hunger growing. Her lips split into a wide grin as she followed close behind, grabbing the guy by the scruff of his neck as he leaned over the woman sitting in his passenger seat, “Leaving so soon? Your date for the night doesn’t look like much of a fight though, sort of unfair and boring if you know what I mean?”

The chuckle was dark as eyes went black, dragging him down the alley as he fought against her. She was shorter, but much stronger than her body made other believe as the other had no choice against the grip she held. She could just rip out his spine, save the world a lifetime of this guy, but it was more fun to leave them fearful and cowering, “It’s just a little fun right? Why not have it with me?” Charissa slammed him against a dumpster hard, listening to the sound of his skull cracking against metal, his howl of pain making her grin grow before she brought her boot down between his legs, going in for another loud cry as she put her weight on the soft fleshy bits…

The angel had come out of nowhere. It really was a bit of a stupid thing really, she was doing the world a favor and here came some stupid alliance member to save the bastard picking his teeth up from the ground. If the winged monkey had simply waited for an explanation Chris wouldn’t have been flying above the rooftops, racing ahead of the “protector of light”. Heaven had no sense of justice, pathetic, she thought as she abandoned her toy, taking wing as the other swooped down on her to rescue the douche bag.

The pummel came down between her shoulder blades, the sudden impact making her flight falter as she plummeted onto a rooftop, the rough tar scraping up her skin as fast as it could heal as she rolled across it. Getting up onto her feet she felt another hit, across the jaw as she rolled another few feet. So far no holy blade was coming down on her neck, but she was trying her best to keep away from it to begin with, but now in tight quarters that had suddenly become a harder task…and without her own arch blade her options were pain or escape. Dad was going to kill her if she didn’t get dragged off to some arches somewhere first to be finished off.

Tasting pennies in her mouth before she spit out the black blood, ”You pigeons upstairs will save just about anyone as long as it means you get to hurt us, doesn’t it? Sort of messed up, the dude was a di—“ The foot to the face didn’t help her attempts, grunting before she managed to dodge another blow, moving up to her feet as she got one good one in, ”See, now you’ve got me angry, if you run now, maybe I won’t kill you.” The angel didn’t seem to buy the gracious gesture from Charissa as he narrowed his eyes at her, readying for another hit.

The door to the apartment building slammed shut behind the archdemon, and Taz sighed as she strode away. Spending time with her father tended to do that. It wasn’t even that he brought out her more demonic urges; or that there was any such nonsense of needing to prove she was the demon her aura wrote her as – it was simply that despite it all the Russian always felt like a disobedient child being brought to task for a misbehavior she hadn’t even known she’d done.

Which was worse, considering how Uriel had not been even aware of his daughter’s existence until less than a year ago. And how Asmodeus had never taken her daughter to task for much beside cowardice or failure.

Heels clicked on the sidewalk as she skirted the edges of a puddle, hands tucked into the pockets of her jacket as she trudged along the streets. Transporting herself would’ve been much more efficient and expedient; but Anastasia felt the need to walk. To get rid of the energy like a buzz under her skin without an outlet; sparks racing along her nerve endings.

Normally, Taz would’ve walked right past the alley way even with the sounds of a fight coming from it. But the phrase ‘pigeons upstairs’ made her pause, long enough to get the faintest tinge of angelic aura. A smirk grew across the archdemon’s face as a quick shake of her right arm had her whip dropped into her hand from where it had been tucked up inside the jacket. The finely braided angelsteel looped in her hand and the demon paced into the alley behind where angel’s back was to her as he prepared to strike out at the young woman again.

It wasn’t so much an inclination to save the young woman ducking away from the blade in the other man’s hand as it was a chance to get rid of the excess tension and tick bleeding in her veins. And on an angel as well; wouldn’t her mother be so proud.

“Hey wise guy, get lost will you?” The archdemon drawled lazily, one hand dangling casually at her side with the pebbled leather of her bullwhip biting into her skin as her palm tightened around it. The angel started in surprise at the archdemon aura that suddenly unfurled behind him; and the whip lashed out faster than the eye could see to lay open a bloody furrow along his shoulder. “On second thought, do me a favor, won’t you?” Taz folded her wings behind her, the long tips brushing her ankles. “Die.” The playful mocking tone of her voice vanished into the dark growl of the being of Hell; albeit however reluctantly and by technicality only; that the woman was.

She stalked forward and the whip lashed out again this time slicing open across his face; and Taz pivoted on the ball of one foot so that her other slammed into his stomach just as he was starting to lunge for her. The archdemon slammed the weighted end of the whip handle – the amount of lead in it gave it the heft and damage power of a blackjack – into his jaw. “Get back kid, before you get blood on that nice pretty outfit of yours.” She tossed casually towards the younger archdemon, dropping to drive a knee into the downed angel’s sternum.

One efficient twist, and the angel’s neck snapped. His chest ceased moving; and the archdemon took the angelsteel tip of her whip and drove it into his carotid. A few wheezes and he was gone.

Taz casually wiped her hands on the dead angel’s shirt, standing up and toeing his arm away with one heeled boot with a small lip curl of disgust on her lips.

”Are you even going to ask why I was breaking that guy’s face at least? C’mon you can see people can’t you? He was a di—shit!” Chris shifted back, she got in a few good hits before the angel came at her, never bring fists to a knife fight, what she wouldn’t give now to at least have a heavy pipe, at least to put some swinging distance between her and the overzealous pigeon.

”Do you really think I’m going to believe you Hellspawn? I think my commander will be happy to see you dragged in. I’m not letting you go.”

The blade swung again and Charissa barely avoided the swipe, she could hear the tip of the blade nick the zipper of her leather jacket as she jerked back. Too close, and with her face still smarting she reeled. The archdemon had been taught how to fight, but it was sparring and fencing, not usually the typical street fight, she tended not to get out enough to bump into those. What would dad say if she got dragged off to a bunch of arches, probably would just set about nuking half the city most likely. Once she got some space she wondered if she could just drop down and get into the air and out of sight, lose the guy in the alley, but flying was already difficult, and turning her back on him didn’t seem wise.

“hey wise guy, get lost will you?”

That was a new voice, the accent was clearly not from around these parts as Charissa glanced over with the angel, ”Well hello…” She responded with a small wave. Another arch, a demon, she’d met few that she could openly just feel and this one was just exuding strength, the energy rolling off of her as Chris watched the angel change targets.

Bad choice on his part, without a weapon and caught off guard she’d been a pretty damn good catch, this woman though was fucking terrifying as Chris moved back towards the edge of the roof. Kid, she called her a kid, Pride was not only the archdemoness’ mother, but also a bit more of her personality as she stared at the other, the snap of a neck resounding as the man twitched and went still, ”I am not a kid!” The death was not as swift as some, but more merciful than she’d seen of many other deaths at the hands of Hellspawn. Getting up she brushed herself off, wiping at the black blood coming from her nose.

”Thanks…got a little caught unawares by that overly devoted cog in the machine. I mean I had it, but the help was welcomed.” She smiled at the woman, licking her lips a little as she moved towards the other. As scary as she was in fighting and angel Chris figured the other had gone about and saved her behind, couldn’t be so bad…hopefully…the kid comment had been bothersome, but everyone made mistakes as she gave a sheepish smile, ”So, what's your name? Should at least know the name of the person helping out on random rooftops.”

Taz coiled the whip absentmindedly in her hands, the slick angelsteel fiber cool against her fingers even with the slightly tacky texture of the drying blood from the angel’s artery on the tip. It got tucked back up into the sleeve of her jacket and then the older woman turned back towards the younger.

She crossed the distance between them in a few steps, her already long legs extended by the heels on her feet; and grasped the younger archdemon’s jaw in one hand to tilt it to one side and then the other. “Barely a bruise.” She said dismissively. “Watch the shoulder next time; muscles there telegraph the intentions.” The girl might’ve not been doing a fantastic job defending herself, but it was clear that she’d had some training and at least knew what she was doing albeit in a much more theoretical way than a street brawl ever was.

And she could appreciate someone trying to stick up for themselves and do it on their own as opposed to calling for help.

The energy that had roiled under her skin was gone with the death of the angel; poured out in the satisfying smack of flesh giving under her hands. “They call me Anastasia, daughter of Asmodeus.” Taz said cautiously, eyeing the smaller woman. And Uriel; but that part seemed hardly relevant to most cases of her life these days. Being the child of Heaven’s battle planner and one of its staunchest defenders was hardly a mark in her favor amongst the Hellspawn.

It was difficult to judge, this other archdemon, her true age. Taz had her doubts that the other was as old as she was; unless she’d be exceedingly sheltered her entire life – but it seemed unlikely because even if the archdemoness was a second generation born like herself why would she ever have been sheltered? But something about the woman’s demeanor suggested youth. “I didn’t do it to help you.” The Russian drawled, letting go of Charissa’s jaw and crossing her arms over her chest.

“So who’re you, to be wandering about unarmed like that?” Granted most demonic and heavenly beings didn’t carry their blades with them on a normal basis; but they had some form of protection for themselves in a city slowly coming apart at the seams by war. Or they were skilled enough at hand to hand to take down opponents, or at least opponents below their weight class like the angel was to both archdemons still standing, without an overt amount of trouble.

Both something it seemed this chirpy little punk kid lacked. Which made her a liability in the best case scenario – dead and dragging down someone else with her in the worst. Not, exactly, that it was Taz’s problem. Considering her unmitigated desire to stay out of the war completely for either side despite her technical allegiance to Lucifer’s army and occasionally lending her inclination for strategy. And wouldn’t dear old dad just love that if he knew? That at least one battle had pitted father versus daughter for strategic dominance?

Arch blades, she knew the kind of wounds they could leave, remembering the mark on her father’s shoulder. The only blades that could kill her kind and the archangels…she’d wanted one for many years, but no time ever seemed like the right time to her father until recently. Curiosity made her want to ask to hold it, to just swing it around once to know what it felt like, but before she could figure out the politest way to ask she felt the hand on her face, ”Hey…” Cheeks squished as she moved up onto her toes, ”Doesn’t mean grabbing my head doesn’t hurt though.” She squirmed, no one in all of her life had just grabbed her like that before. The grip was like steel as she tried to pull out as the woman talked about shoulders and telegraphs, ”Okay, I got it, I had it though. Just wasn’t ready then.”

She could already feel the ground shake at the thought of her dad hearing an angel went after her. It could have been an archangel, or a whole garrison, but maybe he wouldn’t have to know just yet as her converses scraped the tar roof a little to keep her up with the grip. Anastasia, the name Asmodeus rang a bell or two as she smiled, ”Nice ta’ meet’cha then.” It was hard to talk around the hand holding onto her jaw, bones resisting the movement as she huffed. Once she was leg go she stumbled back, fixing her jacket, rolling her shoulders before she gave a little shrug. ”What? Not too keen helping out your fellow Hellspawn? Kill just to kill?” that made Chris a little nervous, she knew the type already, though usually she expected it more through her father’s right hand man. Mindless bloodshed meant anyone could be taken out, friend or foe…

”And I am called Chris…and I was unarmed because I don’t have a weapon, hence ‘unarmed’, I mean I could have crushed his skull, just waiting for my moment. Really a funny story…” She didn’t bother with the dramatics of saying whose daughter she was, if her mother was still alive then it might have held some clout, but she was under strict rules to keep her father’s name out of anyone’s ear as she smiled, ”Well I was trying to make the pigeon understand that I wasn’t doing anything too bad. There was this dudebro by a club preying on some woman so I gave the human a bit more of a fight than she could. Angel dude decided the guy wasn’t worth a beating, went after me. Then you showed up and helped me out. Which I mean, as much as you say it wasn’t helping me, it was helping.”

She kept her smile plastered on her face, fiddling with the cuff of her jacket. It was strange to just stand there with another Hellspawn, she saw many in passing but few who she often lingered around to chat. Chris wasn’t ready to just pass on yet from this as she looked around at the skyline, ”So, since the angel is dead and I owe you one do you want to go get pancakes or something? I sorta lost the group I was with back at the club, so I’m free the rest of the night. How about it?”

Anastasia snorted at Chris’s protest, more so as she squirmed under the brisk inspection. “Gunna have a nice bruise there.” She said with an amused smile, ignoring Chris’s words. “Hope Daddy doesn’t have anything to say about it.” She added; making a stab in the dark about that she was still in the grip of her parents based on her relative inexperience and age; seeing if she could get a reaction from it and pin down more of who this mysterious archdemon was.

Taz shrugged carelessly; tossing leather clad shoulders up and down in a thoughtless movement. “Bleeding off some excess tension.” It was as good an explanation as Chris was going to get; and close enough to the truth that it didn’t ring false when voiced aloud. Half truths and hazy answers were always better than outright lies.

“Unarmed?” Her voice was sharp on the word as it snapped out, eyes flicking towards Charissa’s face. It was perhaps some latent instinct that lay buried deep in her; but it reared up at the idea that someone had let this young one out into the world without a way to defend herself. Hand to hand was all well and good; could bring down enemies and stop them – but it couldn’t kill them. Angelsteel was needed for that. Who had been the idiot that decided that Chris could not have a blade of her own? The corner of Taz’s eye twitched. “Unarmed.” She scoffed.

“You’re an archdemon.” Taz said derisively, recrossing her arms over her chest. “What do you care about a pathetic little human?” It wasn’t strictly how she felt; but given the unknown quantity the other archdemon standing in front of her presented it seemed more prudent to play towards the usual party line for Hellspawn. It was a trick she used in equal measure depending on the situation; given her own allegiance that could be classified best as perhaps chaotic neutral. Technically a member of Lucifer’s Hellspawn; parents on both sides of the fray and a twin one of God’s most devout – her own beliefs had been a muddle since the day she was born.

So Anastasia had made it her goal in life to answer to no one but herself and her mother; to be part of no army and take no side in this war. She would never be pure enough to be with the angels, never have enough faith for them as she really didn’t care about the “heavenly father” at all – what had he ever done for her? She had never needed him, had always stood on her own two feet and relied on no one to keep her going. All she had ever needed was herself. But she would also never been corrupted enough to suit the true archdemons.>

“Pancakes?” Taz asked suspiciously, eyeing the smaller woman up and down. It was an odd request, both considering the time of night it was and exactly what had just occurred – although granted considering both women in question were archdemons the latter part could more or less be discarded. Her stomach rumbled softly though at the mention of food; reminding the archdemon that the lunch had consisted of a handful of suckers snitched from Uriel’s jar when he wasn’t looking and breakfast a protein shake snagged on the way out the door. “Fine. But only ‘cause it’s free food.”

Chris stopped in her fidgeting when Anastasia brought up her father finding out. For a moment her eyes went a bit wide and glazed, thinking of the city block he could and would no doubt level to ground if he found out she’d gotten herself into some trouble. ”I-I…my daddy won’t say anything. I’ll be healed up before he knows, not that it’s his business to know. I’m not a baby who needs looking after anyways, I’m fully grown if you can’t tell.” The archdemon snapped as best as she could with her face squished up in the grip. The nerve of some people, if she knew who she was Chris doubted the woman would be holding onto her like that…then again, even among hellspawn Papa had his enemies…

The woman sure knew how to be short with her. With most of her brushes of archdemons and other hellspawn mostly in passing or surrounded by humans she often didn’t get to talk to too many. Though her reasoning for coming to her rescue (or not) was quickly cut off by the sharp tone that sliced at Chris when she mentioned her lack of weaponry. She had a few blades that she knew how to handle, she had handled guns before, but angelsteel…her father’s sound reasoning had kept her out of sight of the world and for that it kept a weapon of her own out of her hands. ”Hey, I’m getting one…soon…ish.” She defended, trying to match the tone, the daughter of pride not liking the twisting feeling in her gut as if she got caught doing something she shouldn’t (which was what was happening at the moment).

”Look, it’s not a big deal. I almost had it. So what if I don’t have a blade? I wasn’t supposed to be out here anyways. No one gets you a weapon if you’re supposed to stay home. I just don’t stay home however…I know how to hide my aura, really this all was just a fluke. I’ve been at this for well over a century.” It was a very round about explanation, if one could call it that, slender hands waving around with her words, trying to perhaps distract the gaze boring into her skull.

Moving further from the woman Chris nearly flinched when she pushed her on the subject of humans. The younger archdemon squared her shoulders , hands moving to her hips. ”I’m also a brunette, I like red velvet cake, and 42nd Street is my favorite Broadway show. Now we’ve both shared random facts about who I am Anastasia.” She chuckled, turning away as she went towards the edge of the roof. There was a pancake house close by, she’d tailed after enough people before to know that it was a favorite of hung over mortals, and other creatures too… ”I don’t care, but I don’t not care, you get it? They’re not terrible creatures, they make a lot of things I like. Besides, the guy was a real dick…I was just doing what I thought I ought to do. Giving him someone who could fight back. Oh, found the place, Pancakes ho!” jumping over the ledge she landed on the fire escape, starting to make her way down the rusty metal stairs.

Chris avoided the urge to boast, when she ruled this earth after her father she didn’t see humans as something to kill off. Personally humans were the creatures she’d had the most contact with, and not all of them were distasteful. Hell would bring their own kind of peace and heaven to this world, but peace didn’t always line up with chaos, and for now she kept her yap shut as she went along towards where pancakes would be.

”C’mon, if we hurry we’ll get there before the bars close up and all the drunks take the good booths.” She was nearly at the bottom of the fire escape as she called up, surely she could have just leapt down, flown, or just blinked them to the place, but Chris had found a pleasure in walking the city at night, ”Of course it’s free….I said I owed you one. You don’t get out much with friends I’m guessing. It’s cool, I don’t either, I usually have to just hijack a group.” Grinning at the demon when she caught up Chris was closer to forgiving the grabbing and snapping of before, it had been too long since she’d just gone out with someone she didn’t have to coerce, she wanted to enjoy the moment.

Taz hid a smirk at the confirmation of her fishing remarks. Still either lived with her father, or spent enough time in his company that his opinion and approval was something that mattered to her. Granted. Taz supposed that was something that was normal in a father-daughter relationship, no matter the age or relative distance between; but she’d never known her father until recent years and that had been after thousands of years of being solely a mother’s daughter. She didn’t understand that relationship between a father and his daughter. “Yeah, definitely fully grown.” A teenager sentiment. Which in some ways she supposed Chris was.

“Soon. Ish.” The older archdemoness drawled with a trickle of a laugh. Although in retrospect, it was a rather funny sentiment. It did mean that Chris would be meeting Erik soon; which sent a curl of something intangible twining through her gut. The fallen archangel was hard to read on his best days and that was even with the centuries of experience she had from being involved with him. Taz shook it off, folding her arms over her chest with a smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.

Chris defended herself, voice pitching higher on parts and making her points as to why she’d been where she was. It was actually… cute. In a way. The hand gesturing around her face, combined with the vehement nature of her statements combined made for an amusing picture, and Taz felt something like a curl of fondness for the smaller woman. “I’m sure you’re very awesome.” She said dryly. “And who says you don’t need a weapon at home? You never know.” She pointed out, one slender hand flicking out with a slim finger.

This time Taz did smile, and less sardonically than before. “Taz.” She said, unable to help it. “Call me Taz.” Her… friends if she had any would call her so. But then, she’d never particularly connected with other people well. Not even the man who was supposed to be her significant other; or anyone really. It was probably a byproduct of her vehement stance on neutrality and rabid independence. Her cold exterior and icy demeanor didn’t seem to put off this… unusual archdemon however; and it made Taz all the more curious as she extended her wings behind her in preparation to flutter to the ground. “That’s a particularly interesting view for an archdemon.”

Although not exactly one that Taz herself didn’t share. She’d always liked humans, their capacity for free will and how they chose their own paths without fear of letting the world influence them. She landed gracefully beside Chris on the ground, letting her wings fade away. “I… can’t remember the last time I had pancakes.” She mused lazily, tucking her hands into the pockets of her jeans and following the other woman down the street.

“I don’t, no not generally.” Taz said, a touch uncomfortably; hesitant to admit she didn’t actually have any friends. And the idea of hijacking one as Chris thought made her uncomfortable due to her worship of the idea of free will and independence.

Charissa Rasmussen, born of sin and the King of Hell, future queen of Hell on Earth…shrank a little under the amused words of the other demon who while not really disagreeing with her did not seem to be saying anything in a way that Chris felt was holding any belief in them at her defense. Cheeks burned as embarrassment rose up, pride cracking as was the protective aura around her as she squirmed in her spot, blue eyes turning black for a moment as she huffed, frustrated. She took a few deep breaths, daddy had been very clear about exposing herself and her powers, about what it would mean if she let it all slip, so she did her best to try to get it under control.

It was teasing, plain and simple teasing, but Chris had never really been on the receiving end of it ever as fingers grasped at the bottom of her jacket, easing her mood back down. That was what friends did right? She studied the other, eyes bleeding back into their more human looking hue, ”I don’t need weapons at home. Trust me, if someone finds my home they deserve a cookie for the effort.” the king of hell had done a good job to make sure Chris was well protected in their little mountainside home. Save for the occasional supernatural beastie coming through the area there were very few and far between visitors, friendly or threatening,

”Taz?” She repeated the name, uneasy at first as she brushed a hand through her messy hair, bruises and marks from the previous battle already healing, ”That’s pretty.” She regarded, smile slowly, ”Well you already got my shortened name unless you’re looking for an even shorter one syllable name. Full name is Charissa, but everyone knows how to spell Chris better on my coffees, so just Chris.” The younger archdemon babbled as she made her way down the fire escape.

”Is that particular? I’ve spent my whole life around humans, just Pops and I, I mean he knows other archdemons, but I never met them. We’re trying to win a war against Heaven for the Earth, I just figured if we’re going to rule does that mean we’re killing off all the humans? Then who do we have to rule over but ourselves? More flies with honey than vinegar, right? Get them to turn to us to rule and give them peace than Heaven and all that purity junk.” She tried to stay as close to the middle as possible, though just hours ago she’d been spending most of her night with human women, dancing and enjoying the night as if they really were her friends. Giving away her full position to the woman could spell out issues down the road if her father ever formally debut to Hell. To make allies it was needed to keep her heart close to her chest and her lips zipped.

The red light district began to peel away, the clubs and bars becoming fewer and fewer until diners and closed shops began to pop up, ”You can’t? Man, I can’t go a week without them. I try to make them at home, but that’s a bit of a mess.” She joked softly, usually her father would bring treats home from some bakery around the neighborhood for breakfast, including his usual lemon pie, but every now and then she tried to surprise him with food. If a human could make something he liked surely she could?

The tone the other used had lost the amusement and confidence she’d used on the rooftop, ”That’s cool. I usually ditch the group I’ve joined by this time, so I tend to go out alone a lot.” Her voice went soft as they came upon a small little diner, bright neon lights glowing blue and pink in large letters surrounded by star and moon shaped lights. It was on the edge of the Red Light District, a perfect place to people watch after the bars. Opening the door the place reeked of greasy and burnt coffee as she smiled and held the door open for Taz, ”You’re actually the first archdemon I’ve really hung out with.” Going to a booth at the end of the diner she slid into the red pleather seat, worn with age, the plastic tabletop’s design faded and stained with age as she grabbed up a laminated menu from the end of the table.

Taz couldn’t help the smile that threatened to tug at her lips. Chris was cute, in an endearing sort of way. Innocent in the way that most weren’t; but it was obvious where her loyalties stood and that it was a bit of a naiveté rather than true innocence. It was almost sweet. Even with the slip of demonhood that showed her true nature; though the other clamped down on it in a display of control quickly. “Anastasia is a bit of a mouthful.” She said wryly. “I suppose I could call you C or something if you wanted.” Taz offered flatly, eyes dancing in a way that told that she was only teasing.

The archdemoness shrugged. “It is, a bit. Not that you want to not wipe them out; but that you don’t consider them beneath us. Less and inferior. Able to make friends with.” She pointed out with a half shrug. It wasn’t an opinion of the Council’s that Taz shared either, but she also generally kept her opinions to herself.

“Usually it’s blini or blintz when I eat them; pancakes are not a common food in Russia.” Taz said dryly. And she was hopeless at cooking for herself outside of a few staples. Erik cooked breakfast food often; so the nights she did stay the full night curled with him instead of feeling as if she needed to sneak out in the depth of darkness like a booty call instead of a girlfriend. If she even was. Erik was the only person in the world who that despite repeated and varied interactions with she had never been able to puzzle out.

They continued to walk away from the darker areas of the city; towards the limits of the district and the heavy atmosphere of dark and dirty living lifted. Taz was grateful that Chris didn’t comment on the shift in her voice; instead rolling the words back towards the topic at hand. The diner that Chris led them into was bright and cheerful, feeling a throwback to earlier times and years and values. The smells that rolled out as the door was opened made her stomach growl harder, eyes darting to glance at the food on other’s plates.

She glanced curiously at the booth as she slid into the seat opposite of her newfound friend, picking up the laminate menu to hold it carefully between her fingers. “Beside occasionally lending a hand in Lucifer’s battle plans; I cannot say I much do so either.” Taz said casually, eyes flicking across the surface unaware that said archdemon’s daughter was seated across from her. “Mother always wanted me to be more involved and to be more like her; but I prefer to keep my own company to stay uninvolved in the wars of our kind.”

“Who are you really.” Taz said finally, flipping down the menu to thread her fingers together and rest her chin on them. “I can’t figure you out. Sheltered, weaponless – but the child of an archdemon and powerful in your own right. You’re a puzzle missing the piece that snaps the picture into place and I can’t put my finger on it.” And it was frustrating; for a woman who made a habit of classifying and puzzling out the world around her. Treated life like a chess game and people pieces to be moved to achieve goals and end results – but when someone would not fit into a place it made it impossible to predict what they would do next; and their reactions and movements.

Blue eyes narrowed, nose scrunching in distaste at the thought of being called ‘C’ as amusing as the thought of further shortening her name was brought to topic. She met the other’s gaze as studied her to make sure that the look she was giving help no seriousness to it, ”Ugh, no…Chris…or call me Charissa, but let’s just stick with those two options, okay? Taz works great for me, though Anastasia is only a mouthful if you’re trying to get your attention quick.” As they moved she tested both names, going back and forth in a sing-songy way under her breath, seeing which caught on her tongue in a way she liked. After a bit Chris simply fell into humming, forgetting her previous venture as fingers brushed over rusted metal, the fire escape shaking with her steps.

The demoness slowed up her pace, shit…She hadn’t thought about the way she was saying things. Tension ringing through her muscles as she stopped halfway down, considering the other’s words as she tried to think of something to defend herself. ”Just…the useful ones. Useful to me, the cause, what have you.” Friends with humans, she knew how her father felt about the humans, the distaste not something easily hidden. The man would brave a trip to a crowded bakery for some treat made by their hands, but that was as far involved as he was with the creatures that didn’t involve corruption that she knew of. How many tutors had she lost simply for being human and disposable in the past?

”I just don’t think we should shoot ourselves in the foot, we’re at war, what greater blow to Heaven than to have their precious babies turn to us for being saved and not them?” Chris figured she’d managed to save the conversation, just the barest of twists to the truth she knew, after all, father was grooming her for peace after the war. No one else had to know that full truth. ”I don’t think I’ve had either of those. We never went through Russia a lot. So are those like a pancake then, because pancakes are pretty awesome inventions.”

The menu was sticky, Chris handling it with just her finger tips as she looked over the pages filled with breakfast and burger options. The buzz of alcohol had already worn off, but the hunger was stronger now as she flipped a page as a waitress came over and asked for their drink order. The archdemon ordered herself coffee pointing at Taz now to make her own before the woman in the garish yellow waitress uniform left to fulfill them. Once they were alone again Chris could focus on what the other was talking about….working for her father.

Eyes widened a bit, so this one was one of the ones who worked close with her father on occasion, the one who knew the plans, or helped make the plans for achieving the world her father was trying to give her. ”Wow, that must be a huge honor. Working for the big guy…you know that’s a great way to get more power later on. You’re telling me you have no interest in that connection?” It was curious as she watched the woman across from her. It was a strange sort of neutrality to hear come from an archdemon. ”Your mom sounds scary, though if you stay uninvolved aren’t you worried about someone noticing? If Heaven wins we’ll all be killed, we’re trash to them…so why stay out of it when they don’t care?” There was no accusations in her voice, just curiosity as she tilted her head a little, studying the other before the questions were rounded back on her.

It certainly cut to the point as Chris held her menu up like a shield, glancing down as if she was still not decided when she was mostly trying to find the words that would be satisfactory, ”I’m Chris. That is who is I am, never been anyone else before. And right now I am very hungry for some pancakes so why don’t we order and worry less about you putting fingers on me?” A laugh spilled from her lips as her coffee finally arrived at the table, quickly busying herself with dumping sugar into the dark liquid, considering the menu one last time before ordering a short stack with hash browns and eggs. Slumping down in the booth a little more she sighed, propping her feet up across from her on the seat next to Taz, ”You sure do think a lot, do you ever just turn off and enjoy stuff?”

There was an engaging quality about Charissa, like she didn’t censor her thoughts before voicing them; and it was different from most everyone Anastasia met in her life and line of work. Her unfiltered thoughts; and a refreshingly moderate stance for another archdemon. Taz found herself beginning to like this pup she’d met on the street. There was no avoiding the way that her words were backtracking to cover an uncommon stance for their kind; but she didn’t mind. “So who’re you quoting there.” Taz said wryly, a crooked smirk on her face. “Because those certainly don’t sound like your words.” She raised an eyebrow and reached up to tuck an errant lock behind one ear.

“There’s a wonderful shop right in downtown Moscow, just down the street from my office. I used to walk there in the mornings when I finished for the time; and pick some up on my way home.” Her voice was wistful; reminded of the days when she’d done so with her mother.

Taz gave Chris a strange look, unable to identify the odd tone in the other archdemon’s voice at the mention of Lucifer. She chalked it up to her relatively young age, and let it go. “Why would I?” She retorted, spinning a fork idly with her fingers. “I want nothing to do with the war. I don’t think either side has it right and I don’t think they ever will; I don’t care who wins and I’m going to be who I want to be instead of what either of them thinks I should be.” The bite in her tone was unmistakable; a bitterness at the apparent rejection from her family. they didn’t understand her. They never had. Her belief in the end justifying the means was too harsh and dark for the archangels; her ability show mercy and lacking a desire to make others suffer too light for the archdemons.

She shook her head. “No, thanks. I’ll just stick with me, myself and I.”

The older archdemon let the fork clatter to the table, reclining back against the pleather of the seat and staring consideringly at the woman sitting across the table from her. It was a wonderful non-answer; and the other probably thought she was being sly and playing it off. All it did was make Taz all the more curious and determined to puzzle it out. Clearly the hard way by taking all the little clues and hints and pieces and fitting them together to make a whole. Something she’d inherited from dear old Dad. Uriel. She snorted. The brunette let the topic of conversation slide, eyes dipping back to the slick menu on the table.

After ordering a stack of chocolate chip pancakes and bacon along with eggs, she crossed one booted leg gracefully over the eye and raised an eyebrow at Chris’s feet’s appearance on the seat next to her. “No.” Taz said shortly, and then sighed. “It is too much like weakness to do so. Other would take advantage if I am not two steps ahead at all times.”

The trek across the red light district had become an interesting one with the company Chris had wrangled for herself. It certainly was more interesting than the humans she’d been taking the time to get to know. Though the archdemoness was keener than she’d expected, then again for non-human company that was probably what she should have expected as she paused, she licked her lips, trying to think fast. Not her words...she was a little offended, but then again it was mostly her lessons from her father that had prepared her to rule the world he envisioned for her. ”Why are you so set against the thought that I could say something like that? Would it kill you to say ‘wow, this demon is so articulate and smart.’…would it really hurt?” Her pace slowed as she met the incredulous look with one of her own, several silent moments passing before she threw her hands up, ”Fine, got it from a fortune cookie, or a book, alright? Dad’s into that sort of thing.”

She kicked an empty soda can, sending it skittering down the concrete with surprising force until it was met with the side of a brick building. Now Chris was ready for a new topic, ”Russia, huh? So what brings you to Sepulchre then?” That mixed with the woman’s odd sense of neutrality was really putting Chris through a loop as they got settled into the diner. Humans were already trickling in from other parts of town, but in their booth in the corner she felt secure that they wouldn’t be overheard. Who’d believe a drunken idiot halfway into his pancakes anyways if he heard about demons?

Was this how most of their kind was? In her head she’d feared more demons like Beelzebub in the world, the special sort of evil that she’d told her father time and again belonged in the deepest hole in the deepest ocean and the covered up with concrete. She’d never been raised around other archdemon and now this woman, the daughter of a rather well known fallen was making it very clear that her stance was no stance.

”Wow…” Was all that came from Chris, now switching from the sugar to the creamers, dumping them in one by one until the dark liquid had a nice tan color to it, with two of the little things left in the little bowl she grabbed it and shoved it to the end of the table in the hopes it would be a signal to get another refill. She jumped at the clatter of the fork, setting her menu down as she stared at the woman with a little apprehension though her smile still remained, ”Aren’t you worried about what others think? I mean picking a side, fighting. Here I thought the lot of us were trying to get a better spot. If we can’t have Heaven then you fight for the highest spot in hell right?” She wasn’t sure if she should have been impressed or a little frightened by the woman. She was inquisitive and Chris wasn’t sure what to do with all of that.

”Well this is sort of different. Never met someone like you before, never thought I would. Someone who really believes in staying out of the fight despite who your mother is and who you work for. Nothing but respect for that, even if it sounds a bit lonely.” She was an expert on loneliness, her friends were often hijacked humans or her father when he wasn’t busy with other things. Her’s was a loneliness caused by necessity, she wondered what reasons Taz had though for her own isolation.

Swinging her foot she tapped the other’s thigh lightly, smiling at the order she put in. A sweet tooth, that was sort of cute as she leaned forward, chin in her hand as she sipped her milky concoction, ”Well considering I’m weaponless and you saved my butt back there that’s like two whole steps already Taz, not to mention your terrible habit at thinking I’m just a kid. So at this point you have the advantage…” Leaning back in her seat her smile stretched into a grin, ”Which means you really should start enjoying yourself. Might be the only time you get to before I catch up. You can’t be serious and eat pancakes, it’s like the law of nature…so loosen up, pick a few songs on the jukebox.” She drew and X over her heart, chuckling as she prodded at the other again with the toe of her boot in encouragement to relax. "I promise I won't tell on you to your mom, or Lucifer...c'mooon."

“Because it doesn’t sound like you.” Taz shrugged, thumbs tapping an irregular beat against her thighs where her hands were slipped into her pockets. “You say it as if it were someone else’s words in your mouth – things you have been told are the right ones but that you have not found a way to adapt into your own mind and thoughts.” She remarked, continuing to walk onward even as Chris slowed. “It’s not to say you don’t believe them or haven’t internalized them. It’s that you speak words not fitted to your own thoughts but the way someone with different thought patterns and experiences would see them.”

Taz’s heels clicked precisely on the pavement as she strode along; thoughts tumbling through her mind. She’d learned how to read people over the decades spent running the mob in Moscow and how to predict their moves and their thought patterns – it often isolated her from others because she rarely took the time to actually bother getting to know people on anything other than that level as pieces on a chessboard to be moved.

“My mother.” The archdemon answered absentmindedly lost in her thoughts. “My father is here in the city and…” She caught herself a beat before continuing, lips pressed together in a thin line. The topic of Uriel was still one that did not bear talking about or ever did – though her parentage could not being denied with even the barest glimpse of the archdemon’s aura and the light that wound through the darkest corners like a fungus with its roots in deep. “My mother is here in the city for the war.” She settled on.

The hot tea steamed mouthwateringly and appealing as it settled in front of her. The archdemon swirled the teabag around with her fingers, The steam brushed over her skin as she took a sip; considering the other woman as she turned her coffee into a sugary confection. “I care little what others think.” Taz dismissed out of hand. “I don’t want a spot in Heaven, I don’t want a spot in Hell - I’m my own side and that’s how I’ll stay.” She added smoothly, taking a larger sip of the tea and easing back to lean further into the pleather.

The Russian arched one slim eyebrow at the foot that tapped her, raising the gaze towards Chris. The words trickled around her in a flow, and then the eyebrow stayed raised for a different reason. It was clear that the younger demon didn’t take Taz’s meaning of being two steps ahead as she’d meant it; but the older let it slide. It was probably better that way. She still hadn’t managed to figure out who the other woman was or what her end game was; endearing as she was. A smile lurked at the corners of her lips. “Who’s to say I’m not enjoying myself as it is? Without ‘turning it off’ as you say?” Her fingers hooked the air in air quotes as she spoke.

”It doesn’t sound---“ The woman had known her a full half hour at most and was telling her how she sounded, but Chris wasn’t really one to get upset or angry at the comment as she continued on to make it clear what she meant. It was something she’d learn from the father, but to say her father had said it…to say he was Lucifer and he’d been training her since birth for a rule to follow this what sort of reaction would she get? ”I believe in not trying to destroy everything, or trying to kill everyone. It’s not very archdemony, people tend to want to tear your skin off for it. I mean, don’t get me wrong, every now and then blood has to be spilled, I just don’t want it to be mine. So I watch my words.”

From a few steps back Charissa took in the full form of Taz, the traces in her aura, the way she moved on the sidewalk. She certainly was one for the facts, rational thought mixed with deadliness…she wasn’t sure if it was scary or kind of hot. It certainly did trump the chaos and insanity of what she heard of her father’s right hand man Beelz, Taz had potential to be a real benefit or a real threat…what that was, was still a mystery.

”Oops, must not be a fan of daddy dearest if that’s how quick you turn about on it…must not of been from our side, was he?” She’d seen the tinge of light, angels for the most part made Chris angry, the self-righteous act, pulling swords through her father…still the barest glimmer of the heavenly aura had a look to it that just fascinated the spawn of Satan himself. Somewhere deep down her father had been an arch and every now and then Chris wonder just if there was some part left, ”So who was he? I’m more of a daddy’s girl myself, but then again your mother has to be alive still for you to really know her and like her. Guess it wasn’t meant to be.” She laughed softly, tugging on her leather jacket. ”I guess it’s nice to be close to family at least, even if it is just for war.” Taz didn’t seem too impressed with the battling, but it made Chris all the more curious as to why she’d come all the way from Russia to help out her father with planning battles.

Bright blue eyes narrowed as she consider the other over the steam of the tea, her own sweet and hot concoction now cooled by the cream, ”Nonesense, everyone cars, some people just don’t show it. You’ve got a very lone wolf vibe going on, nothing wrong with it…I like it.” Pink lips split into a toothy grin, ”No power, no side, no cares. Sounds lonely to me, and I know lonely, trust me Tazzy. Are you really serious that you don’t care? Not one bit of you wants a little more of something?”

The raise eyebrow was met with a daring smile and a gaze set behind dark wisps of hair that had fallen from their braid. ”Please, you tell me that you prefer to have control every minute of every day of your immortal life? It’s fun not to trust a single person enough to let go? I’m calling that, you’re bluffing, you are a bluffer.” She spoke with both her voice and hands, gestures whipping around sporadically, ”What if I told you that you could trust me? We have similar views, you saved my life, and you have the one thing that could kill me…everything falls into your favor. There is no reason for you not to just relax and enjoy the pancakes.”

Hands went still as she gripped her mug again, finishing off the coffee in a few gulps, the grin still there, ”I bet you’re cute when you smile and aren’t trying to be all murdery.”
