aine maebh o'donnell twenty-three localpsychologistevan rachel wood "you have a really interesting name. unfortunately, i have no idea how to pronounce it. can you tell me how to say your name?"aine smiles sweetly at the woman interviewing her. "it's pronounced awn-ya may-v. i mean you can pronounce my last name right? i know my name is like super confusing. it's kind of a family thing. my mother is a huge irish traditionalist and she insisted that we all get traditional irish names." aine chuckles sweetly and clenches her fist underneath the table.[if there is one question that aine hates more than any other, it's people asking how to pronounce your name. that is one of her pet peeves. another pet peeve is when anyone pronounces her name wrong. to aine, its not that difficult. still, she's been called annie, anne, and so many other americanized pronounciations that it drives her up a wall. doesn't anyone know gaelic anymore?]"so it says here that you studied psychology at new york university. that's a pretty prestigious school. why are you applying at tree hill memorial hospital?"the sweet and charming smile stays on aine's face as she pushes a strand of short blonde hair behind her eyes. her fist unclenches under the table. "my family. i mean, yeah new york has some seriously awesome opportunities and the shopping is to die for, but family is super important to me. i missed over half of my nephew's life while i was in manhattan and that's like so not cool. psychology is what i love. i mean, yeah i minored in art history because art is really cool too, but psychology is pretty much my passion. i want to help people you know? and when my mom told me that there was an opening here, i just had to try." aine lets out a nervous laugh and bites her bottom lip.[in truth, aine applied at tree hill memorial hospital for one reason and one reason only: drugs. everyone knows that hospitals have a wonderful supply of prescription narcotics. while she would never touch the stuff herself, she knows that her family can make a lot of money from those pills. yes, she did move to tree hill from new york to be with her family, but that isn't the whole story. the real story is much more complicated.]"what benefits do you think you'd bring to the hospital? in this position i mean?"aine cocks her head to the side as she thinks for a moment. underneath the table, her fist balls up again. "i'm a great listener and really, that's important here. i'm also bilingual. i speak spanish and english like it says on my..." she thinks for a moment, like she's forgotten the word. "resume. i'm totally sorry. sometimes, i forget the most obvious words. it is super embarassing. anyway... i've been told that i'm really charismatic. people are drawn to me for some weird reason. which i guess will really help with making patients trust me. sometimes, they just tell me things. i guess its because its easier to talk to a stranger or something. i don't know. it's just something that has always happened."[there are several falsehoods in this statement. the first is that aine is fluent in english, spanish, gaelic, and latin. she is very good at hiding the fact that she's much more intelligent than people think. she enjoys that people believe that she's a ditz. she plays it up. she lets people think that because it makes them think that she isn't a threat. she is highly charismatic and many people believe that she is insanely sweet as well. they think that she's hilarious when she forgets what word she's going for. in reality, she leaves those gaps waiting for people to volunteer words. she jumps from topic a to topic l because generally, people volunteer secrets and information to her while they try to follow her logic. she is highly manipulative when it comes to her intelligence level. erin learned from her, and then surpassed her in the manipulative side. as for sweet, she's got a sadistic streak a mile wide.]"if you get the job, you'll have long hours and several days where you're on call. you said before that family is the most important thing to you. a young woman like you probably has more than just your family to go home to. do you think your family or significant other would mind how much you're working?"aine nods. a dark look passes behind her blue eyes. you wouldn't know it was there if you weren't looking for it. "my family understands that i'm a grown woman who has to support herself. they're so excited for this opportunity for me. they're even more excited that its in tree hill so they get more time with me." she smiles a big smile and then looks down at her hands. she notices how tightly clenched her hand is and forces herself to relax it. "as for my significant other minding, that would totally require me having one."[aine's parents didn't mind that she went to new york city for college. they understood that she needed to see more of the world than the criminal aspects. her father pulled her aside the day before she left and gave her an assignment. there were three families in new york city who she needed to look up. they were big families up and down the east coast: the kennedy clan, the donaghy clan, and the kavanaugh clan. her father had a friend with the kennedys who knew that aine was coming, but he was low enough on the totem pole to not have much bearing. aine was to get to know the upper crust. the most important family to get on their side was the kennedys. a beef with the kennedys could do them much more harm than good. the second priority was the kavanaugh family as they had groups within fifty miles of their home in virginia and another in raleigh, north carolina. the donaghy family was a lower priority, but still important.it took a year for aine to win over the kennedys enough to speak with patrick kennedy. when she did, she was practically an honorary family member. she went to mass with them every week and attended family dinners, much like she did with the o'donnell clan back home. she was ready to set her sights on the kavanaugh family when she met him at one of the kennedy night clubs. he was the son of the donaghy leader and she was instantly attracted. it took a week for her to get under his skin. they began sleeping together. two months later, she learned of his engagement to brigid kavanaugh to bridge an old feud between the two families. for the first time in her life, she chose herself over the good of her family. she continued seeing her boy in private. at the same time, she befriended brigid. they shared an apartment. aine continued seeing her boy for the duration of her college experience. she dated the son of a local politician as a cover so that no one would suspect what was going on with her and donaghy. in that time, she managed to get both the donaghy and kavanaugh families to ally themselves with the o'donnells. she had done what she'd set out to do.two weeks before her graduation, everything began to come to a head. brigid said that she felt like her fiance was seeing someone else. he was acting more distant. aine couldn't tell her what she knew. on her graduation day, the politician's son proposed to her, unknowing of her family history. it was the second time she chose herself over her family. she said no despite how good it would be for the o'donnells. another month passed as brigid grew more suspicious. aine was convinced she would find out but donaghy said she was always suspicious. they began talking about how they could run away together. she knew it never would happen though. they were both too dedicated to their families, despite two choices that said otherwise. in august, brigid caught them. aine spent two months trying to have damage control. it didn't work. just before thanksgiving, brigid told aine that she had to leave the city or else the raleigh branch of the kavanaugh family would be taking a visit to tree hill. it took a few days before she realized what she meant. she moved home on thanksgiving. she still hasn't had the courage to tell her family exactly why the kavanaugh family and donaghy family didn't build the alliance after all.]"well aine, it was nice to meet you. can you come in for another interview tomorrow at three in the afternoon?"aine smiles and nods. "of course. i can't wait. it was so nice to meet you!" aine stands up and shakes the girls hand. as she leaves, a satisfied smirk replaces the exuberent smile. she knows that she nailed that interview.twenty-foureastern pm sarah
