Many different people in the media, claim Eoin Colfer based his book on Harry Potter. Taking as an advantage the whole Harry Potter phenomenum, which insipires many authors to try their luck in the magic genre.
Do you think this is true?

*gasp* No! AF is extremely different from HP! ohmy.gif Their ideas are similar in size but nothing else! What I mean by that is that they both created their own universe, one with witches and wizards and one with fairies. They just both happen to have magic! AF is incredibly different from HP. I have a million other reasons, but I'm too lazy to list them tongue.gif , and plus I'm gonna eat dinner right now.

I think any books having to do with any kind of magic are automatically considered "Harry Potter Copies" by the general public. Even books that were around before Harry Potter, like LoTR (it's sad...I know).

I mean, the only similarity I can think of is that they both have to do with magic, but it's two completely different types of magic, and Harry Potter has some of the same magical 'creatures' (elves, centaurs, pixies, etc.), but...Come on! I swear, people who accuse Artemis Fowl of being a Harry potter rip-off probably haven't even read the books.

I think people are just jealous cuz Artemis is a whole lot cooler than Harry ; )

I agree with you both, specially about people judging the book before even knowing what it's about: they read the word magic and instantly say "this is a copy".

Although, I have seen books which took advantage of the magic success... since I love the fantasy book I've read a couple which I though were horribly written, had no decent story, and were only trying to increase their sales by writing about something which is now very popular.

I find very difficult to compare Harry Potter with Artemis, since it's so different: Harry being this hero who sacrifices himself for the rest of the population, and Artemis being completely egocentric, and absolutely modern. I enjoy both kinds of characters tongue.gif

Thank you =)

I remember seeing a book that just screamed 'HARRY POTTER COPY OHEMGEE'

I swear. It was Charlie Bone, or something. My friend was reading it. I was like 'Dude, that looks like a total Harry Potter rip-off' and he said 'It is' and I asked him why he was reading it, and...That's where my memory trails off.

I've seen lots of books that try to cash in on Harry Potter's success, and Artemis Fowl is NOT one of them. It deals with magic, yes, but it's TOTALLY different. It just happened to have been published during the wrong time. In a way. I read Artemis Fowl before I even considered reading Harry Potter. I think if Harry Potter hadn't been so popular at the time when Artemis Fowl hit the shelves, less people would have read it, but at least then no one would have accused it of copying Harry Potter.

I'd like to see people make a fuss over Artemis the way they did over Harry. Even now, everyone's like "Harry Potter, Harry Potter, OMG, it's Harry Potter!' But hardly anyone's even heard of Artemis Fowl. Even now, next to maybe one book, which shouldn't count anyway because it's not even in the same genre, Artemis Fowl is the best book series I've ever read, and Colfer is my all-time favorite author. Harry Potter was great, but after the movies started being made, I think Rowling kind of sold-out and the books went totally downhill.

Artemis Fowl is a lot more exciting to read, because Colfer's a great writer. What I like most about it is its humor, but it's the only book (or series of books) I've ever read where the 'action' scenes don't bore the heck out of me. The action scenes in the AF books are actually exciting, and it's a lot harder to keep the suspense up like that in a book rather than in a movie.

I ramble a lot. I know.

Totally agree. Why is ever fantasy or book that contains magic immediately branded a 'Harry Potter' copy? Don't get me wrong - I love Harry - but come on, there are loads of other fantasy books that are even better, eg LoTR, which are true classics. Harry Potter didn't create a genre - JK used ideas (whether intended or not) from many other books of the same genre beforehand, so why do critics insit on implying that all books of the fantasy genre after HP are clones, when there are hardly any origional ideas in the HP series anyway? And besides, AF is more to do with technology, and includes more humour etc than HP. Oh, that and the fact that the storylines are TOTALLY different...boy trying to take over the world...boy trying to save the world...not the same thing, really, if you think about it. dry.gif biggrin.gif

They ARE totally different. I like Harry Potter. Or I used to. Is it just me, or did the books start to kind of really suck after the movies started being made? J.K. Rowling got lazy or something, I swear.

Harry: Somewhat of a goody-two-shoes, trying to save the world, closest thing to elves in the story are house elves. HOUSE ELVES, people. Seriously.

Artemis: Delightfully evil, would probably like to conquer the world, and the elves are just wicked cool.

Not really seeing the connection here... unsure.gif Hmmm.

Hehe... biggrin.gif Yes, they missed the fact that elves are seen completly differently in both books! I'd just like to say (a bit off topic, but oh well) that Daniel Radcliffe is the worst stinking child actor I have ever encountered! I just watch the films to laugh! laugh.gif

It kinda pissed me off when they picked that kid. He looks nothing like Harry. He has brown hair and blue eyes and he's not exactly all scrawny-looking, like Harry is supposed to be. His acting abilities aren't horrible, I've seen worse, but I've seen much better.

Wouldn't it be awful if they got him to play Artemis? -shudder-
