It is early spring. Although weather is still quite wintery, by most folks' definition, in most of Plateau Weyr's territory, there are definite signs that the season is shifting. The first shoots are beginning to break ground in some places, the snowpack has thinned, and the sun is out as often as not, although the days are still bitterly cold. Any Thread which falls is still turning to crackdust. But that situation can only hold for another month or so at most. Normally, this would be routine, but at the beginning of this fourth Turn of the Pass, there's a problem. A new problem, one unforeseen by anyone... not even Mentat Oprierd, hidden sponsor of the Raiders. Ironically, not even he realizes yet that his own Raiders were responsible, and it's precisely because of their failure that he does not yet know...

In their foolish attempt to create an environmental hazard for their Craft-fellows among the Weyrs, some mages among the Raiders instead managed to contaminate the exudate of a certain volcano in the South. Everywhere the ash from this blast spreads, magic fails. The more ash is present, the worse the failure. Now, in a large swath of the Southern Continent, reality is locked so firmly that dragons cannot even fly, nor can Therioi shapeshift. Some unfortunate Therioi, in alternate forms when the volcano erupted, became stuck in those forms. These effects persist until the affected can escape to an area totally free of the ash, then wash it from themselves.

Unfortunately, those fleeing the South, and their well-meaning friends and allies, did not realize that in doing so, they were only bringing the ash to places it would otherwise never have gone... including Plateau Weyr.

As such, magic is now unreliable and difficult to use throughout the Northern Continent, but especially at Plateau Weyr since they had the largest number of people in the South during the eruption. Unfortunately, only a handful of people have made the connection between the trip South and the odd failure of all magic, and none of them have realized that the ash is the key. So the problem continues to spread... and get worse. Most of the dragons are still able to fly, but as the sevendays go on and magic's failure intensifies, more and more of them, starting with the largest and heaviest but eventually including all but a handful of the very smallest and healthiest Scouts, become grounded. Given that Thread is only a month away at most, this is a matter of grave concern to the Weyrleadership. A solution must be discovered, and very soon.

Meanwhile, as if that weren't bad enough, something has caused Senior Queen Seystrenth to fail to clutch on schedule. Perhaps it's just all the stress recently, and surely the ash didn't help, but in any event, she is three sevendays overdue and the Weyr is becoming gravely concerned. Two Soldiers have recently clutched, but that does little to reduce anyone's anxiety. After all that Plateau has suffered in the last Turn, are they about to lose their Senior Queen and an entire clutch too?

Appearance: Being a purebred Wherry-folk Jarinelle is one of the few that has six limbs as opposed to the usual four and is capable of limited flights. Her skin is covered with soft small feathers, similar to how a baby chicken might feel after being dried off from birth. This gives her an appearance of being soft and delicate though the opposite is true. Both her hands and feet have sharp talon-like nails. Overall her body is a creamy tan color while her arms and legs fade to a grayer body tone and shift from feathers to rough skin though it is not as scaly or rough as an actual wherries legs/feet. Her cheeks and lips are a more orange and red toned as opposed to a humans more pink based color and when she blushes her throat becomes the vibrant shades of a sunset. The hair on her head is black and kept cut in a short bowl type style so that it does not fall past her jawline. Usually the hair hides where normal ears would be, hiding the fact that although she can hear just fine she does not have actual ear lobes... they are more bird like than humans. Her eyes are white. King Vulture dna based ferali.

Personality: Jarinelle is an omnivorous person that hates the cold. She can eat pretty much anything without getting sick and has an iron stomach yet she is very susceptible to colds. She does not know what true friends are and usually she feels like if you want something you have to take it. Showing fear is bad, there's no point in helping others unless it helps yourself, and she is perpetually frustrated by the short durations of her flights. She wants to be able to fly for long periods of time, to be able to soar, to feel the sun warming her back and wings for far longer than what she's currently capable of. It's because of that desire that when a dragon rider mentioned she could be candidate material she took them up on the offer. With a dragon, she'd be able to soar to new and greater heights. She is a very self serving person without a proper understanding of just what it means to be a dragon rider.

History: Jarinelle was born in a small cot hold under Rainwilds Hold's protection. Her parents, and her grandparents before them had always lived there, using their skills to hunt and trap and track the wild beasts that lived there. Their tithe to the hold was supplemented by fruits fresh picked from the trees and they had a mild reputation as being able to supply fruit that was neither bruised nor bug-bitten. Their secret to this was picking the fruit right from the tree as opposed to having to knock it down or waiting for it to fall, and they could do this because they kept their bloodlines pure and every second or third generation there was usually someone born with wings. As a youth Jarinelle loved her flying lessons though by the age of ten she was often frustrated at the limitations imposed on her. Don't do this, don't do that... eat this sludge of a soup full of things no normal human could eat while we ship our best foods off to the hold. She grew to resent them, the adults telling her what to do and the hold for taking their stuff... if they wanted fruit so bad they should come get it themselves. By the age of twelve she'd decided to run away and after packing a small bag she used a nearby hill as a lunching point... Only, her bag was heavier than she'd thought and all those restrictions her parents placed on her flying were apparently for her own good. She couldn't stay aloft in the air for as long as she'd thought and that miscalculation caused her to badly sprain her ankle upon landing. Needless to say she was both literally and figuratively grounded while her leg healed and then watched closely. Thankfully, a little over a year later she was searched and then just recently transferred from stonefalls weyr to plateau weyr once the word of the eggs on the sands got out. After all, with the raiders attack and all, surely they'd be hard pressed to find their own candidates?

Whereas Lyeth's mother glows, Lyeth does almost the opposite. He has the ability to drain light from an area and use it as a form of energy (similar to how an energy drink might be used in substitute of a good night's sleep). This energy is not as good a quality or quantity as what is normally obtained through food and sleep, but it will do in a pinch.

Mechanically, this magic is a mix of metamagic and weirding. In part, he is affecting the quarks in his immediate surroundings (weirding the environment), and the other part is a subtle manipulation of those around him - his mind is telling theirs that there is no light.

Lyeth also has an enhanced sense of Paracognition, an average sense of knowing, and unlike some dragons, he has absolutely NO Searching talent at all.

Appearance:
Lyeth is a creamy off white. His head is a brighter, buttery yellow, and his small wings are coated in a fine spray of reddish speckles (which also lightly pepper his nose). His armor plates are minimal and smooth, and are a light blue-grey. He is all-over pearlescent, especially in early morning sunlight.

An extra set of eyes lies just beneath and behind his first set, and are as expressive as the originals, though his vision through them is somewhat blurry and dark.

He is a small creature, as all Scouts are. At maturity, he will be large enough to carry Jarinelle, at 17 feet long and with a wingspan of 34 feet. Compared to his clutchmates, he will tire very easily, though he can fly much longer than Jarinelle herself can.

Personality:
Lyeth would very much like to please his rider. He understands her desire to soar freely through the air, and is frustrated that he can only provide this to her in limited spurts. He, like Jarinelle, longs for independence and freedom. However, despite his longing to be out from under the thumb of the Weyr and its leadership, he is fiercely protective of what he perceives as his. This extends to the Weyr itself, and so he finds himself not only willing, but also eager to enter battle in its defense. For this reason, he takes a great deal of satisfaction in flying Thread, even though he can only do so in support capacity, and not as a full member of one of the high Wings. He is also quite willing to go up against raiders.

Lyeth is very perceptive, and very little of what Jarinelle does, sees, or thinks will go over his head.

Mutation:
As mentioned above, he has an extra set of eyes.

Also as mentioned above, he can absorb light and convert it to energy.

Finally, having been born somewhat joined to his twin, Lyeth will need to deal with the physical ramifications of having been forcibly separated, though the joined area was restricted to a single hind leg and he should not suffer any crippling.
