When does Redux take place?
It has been approximately a full ten years since Act I of Dragon Age 2. That means, if Act III took place in year seven of Hawke's stay in Kirkwall, it has been approximately three years since the events of the game's finale. Please be sure to keep this in mind when aging your characters forward.
How will this work?
As per the plot, characters will be contacted through a lucid "dream" in which they discover that their world is on the brink of complete destruction. The only answer is to alter the "parts" of time in which things went wrong. The entity that contacts them imbues their leader with an artifact that will allow them to traverse realms beyond that of mortals and the Fade, altering the outcome of events in a way that will hopefully avert the crisis.
After they are contacted through the Fade, they'll meet up in person to begin their travels to save the world.
What this means out of character is that the characters will be revisiting and potentially changing the course of past plotlines as well as adding new ideas for individual characters. As they will be forced to meet up to accomplish their tasks, they can also associate with each other at their base of operations when they're not on missions to fix the broken timelines.
Where is their base of operations then?
With permission from Kahrin Cousland's player and with moderator approval, the base of operations is Soldier's Peak.
Does my character have to be a part of the group that is fixing the timelines?
There's no requirement for it, but your interactions will be limited if you keep your character on the fringe of the action or somewhere outside of Ferelden. They don't have to go along on every mission. You can always make up reasons for them to sit things out.
What is the state of the Circle of Magi?
As news of the Kirkwall rebellion spread, mages in nations that follow the Andrastian Chantry also fought against those that held them. They were successful in bringing about the dissolution of the Circle of Magi in many nations, but this has only led to great conflict. Templars still loyal to the Chantry track and hunt them while mages continue to fight in organized bands. Among their many actions over the last three years, they have been known to organize raids on phylactery stores to ensure that they can't be found unawares, although with varying degrees of success. The phylacteries of mages in Ferelden, held in the heart of Denerim, were not as easily accessible and still remained mostly protected because of their location.
There also are those mages who are simply content with the option of being free and are only attempting to hide and live a normal life.
What is the state of the Chantry?
While the Chantry remains revered by many citizens of Thedas, it has also fallen under just as much scrutiny, extending the conflict beyond templar versus mages and into truth versus deception, calling into question how much power the Chantry has in most Andrastian nations although its seat remains in Orlais, as well as the necessity of the lyrium trade for templars and mages. There are significant numbers of templars who still serve as the arm of the Chantry, but a large number of them have also been called away from local chantries to be used in the endeavor to quell the mage uprising. The conflict remains at an impasse, with some battles won but just as many lost and even more on-going.
The anti-Orlesian sentiment in places such as Ferelden is complicating matters with the Chantry, especially with talk from more extreme nobles that there is no way to ensure Orlesian-sent templars that are meant to be battling mages will not act as spies. It seems that it will not be long before Ferelden's monarchy might find its hand forced.
There are templars who have rebelled against the Chantry, believing that this is not the proper way to treat mages and also feeling betrayed at the potential idea that lyrium isn't strictly necessary to fuel their abilities. That they have left the Order at such a time has put them at odds with the Chantry.
What is the state of Thedas?
The Circle of Magi is dissolved. The Chantry finds its power threatened. The bulk of the conflict has been taking place in regions most known for having populated Circles, such as the Free Marches and Ferelden, but it's not uncommon for either side, in an effort to maintain the upperhand, to cover great distances for their respective causes.
Ferelden is in a state of unrest amidst mixed feelings. The Free Marches and its city-states stand divided by skirmishes and battles. Kirkwall is still in the process of reconstruction, and the Gallows is where mages recovered during the rebellions are sent, if they are to be spared by the hierarchy in Orlais.
