THE PERSONALITY
Personality:
Outgoing & Ambitious
Roman is a generally outgoing young man. He enjoys social activities and would rather be found among friends than be by himself. This has been a handy talent when it comes to being on the house’s quodpot team. He is always eager to be hanging out with his friends, enjoying the culture of New Orleans and debating strategies with his teammates. Roman is ambitious to the core, always wanting what he can’t have. He doesn’t accept the fact that he could fail, even when the facts are clear as day. He can almost become bull headedly stubborn when it comes to getting what he wants. Telling him “no” is almost an invite for him to do the exact opposite.

Athletic & Competitive
Quodpot is his life. It is one of the few activities he has found that doesn’t force him to rely on his reading skills in order to get the job done swiftly and correctly. It all comes from instinct. Sports, both Muggle and Magical, have always been a fascination of his. During his breaks throughout the day you can find him either outside on the quodpot field or inside his room tossing a tennis ball against the wall. Having a competitive nature helps to fuel his athleticism. He does his best work if there is someone he can go head to head with, combining his competitive nature with his desire for success in life. RJ wants to win and a part of him doesn’t really care how he gets there. So long as he has the competition, Roman will do everything in his power to come out victorious.

Temper & Judgmental
RJ has a temper, something no one in his family expected. He comes from a family of calm individuals who can hold their temper until the end of time it seems. The smallest thing can set him off, the most easily of these is to bring up his academic troubles. Over the years he has gained some semblance of control though RJ is partially convinced that this control is just an illusion. His best defense against his own temper is to just walk away and find something to distract himself. He desperately wants that calming control his father has over his temper but in all of Roman’s years he has not been able to manage it. Running away has become the easiest solution. He has also grown to be a very judgmental individual. He relies on his first impressions, something that is hard for him to change despite getting to know the person more. At times this trait has been beneficial to him by allowing him to not trust people so willingly, however the majority of the time it will hinder him. He doesn’t make true friends easier which is why his true friends tend to be the ones he’s known the longest.

Arrogant & Egotistical
He presents an outwardly confidence appearance whether or not he feels the same way on the inside. His best defense is showing that he couldn’t give a crap what happens to him or what anyone else thinks about him. RJ does feel that he can do no wrong and that he is an attractive man. The fact that others do not agree is hard for him to accept, causing him to just dismiss them as crazy or jealous instead. It takes a lot to get him to acknowledge when he has made a mistake. He’d rather just realize it in private and move on than announce it to the world. He’s one of those guys that will keep arguing despite the fact that half-way through the argument he discovered the other person was right. He is extremely vein, almost preening himself whenever he is complimented. He likes to flirt with every girl just to get the ego boost, even when he may not even like the girl. Finally, he just doesn’t understand that a person could find him unattractive. It goes against his own belief about his appearance. Girls who often say they don’t like him will cause him to try harder to get them to like him just to prove to himself that he is good looking.

Academics
Roman is a bright young man; however his academics have enforced the jock stereotype of all meat but no brains. In reality, Roman just has a problem reading. Give him the directions orally and he’ll quickly start on the task. If he has to read it himself then he will need more time before he can even begin working. This is not a problem with his reading abilities, after all his dad is a doctor, but with the processing of the words. Half the time he will process the wrong words, switching “d, b, p, and q” interchangeably. This is why Roman will often mouth the words as he reads or most commonly say these words out loud in order to catch the mistakes. Roman is extremely insecure of this, doing everything he can to make sure people don’t call him out on his difficulties. This has often led to violent reactions from Roman in order to keep people from cracking jokes about him.

Dreamer & Creative
Due to his struggles processing words, RJ has had to develop a unique way of thinking. He’s had to become resourceful and creative when it comes to his studies in order to survive. As a kid, his father had a strict policy when it came to academics, not accepting anything other than exceeding abilities. This meant that in order to avoid the anxiety that came with reading, the young man would have to find creative ways to complete a task that was handed him. This training has been put to good use on the quodpot field, allowing the young man to treat the sport like it is an art that only those with true talent can thrive in. Despite what people would think RJ is a bit of a dreamer. He wants to prove to everyone that he can do anything he sets his mind to and there is nothing that could stop him from getting those dreams. The majority of his dreams revolve around quodpot since this is where his sense of identity is, but a part of him wants to show that his processing disadvantages won’t limit what jobs he can get.

History:
Born December 14, 1994, Roman Jay Kelly was the first child to Aiden and Natasha Kelly. He did not arrive in the typical fashion. No, the infant had been too eager to get out of the womb, arriving as the couple made their way to the magical hospital. At the hospital it was determined that Roman was a healthy baby, already driving his parents up the wall with his loud nature. As the first born, his parents devoted a lot of time and energy into their son. His mom took three months off of work to spend time with him while his dad made sure they bought anything that they might need raising a child. The parents were eager to finally have the little addition to their family. Roman was a loud and active child, eager to explore from the moment he could crawl with ease, prior to that he had been content just to bounce around on his mother’s lap. When he was two, his sister Farrah was born and became the final addition into the Kelly family. The two were raised by their parents, occasionally being babysat by their aunt while Natasha and Aiden were working.

RJ was given his first broom as soon as he knew how to run. His father had intended the child learn to fly in order to get him something to play with outside. He never thought the young boy would have taken to the sky like Aiden had taken to healing. The sky was more of a home to Roman than anything else had ever been. It was the one thing he looked forward to everyday whether he went out alone or he got together with some of the other kids from magical families. The older he got, the more time he spent on the broom. In his opinion he’d rather be in the sky than anywhere near the ground.


Roman grew up exposed to magic. As a child, his parents had eagerly awaited for any sign that he was magical. Other than his skill for flying, RJ didn’t have a strong show of magic. Sure, the occasional item would disappear but the parents could never decide if this had been a show of magic or if Roman was once again hiding things around the house. It wasn’t uncommon for the boy to snatch his father’s favorite watch only for the family to find it a few days later buried in the sandbox. His parents made a decision early on to assume he was going to get a magical letter at some point or another.

The Kelly family comes from a long line of doctors and healers. The father’s side of the family has been healers since before anyone can remember. Combine that with the fact that Natasha’s muggle side were doctors or pharmacists only strengthened the assumption that the Kelly kids would continue to follow this field. Since he was a child, RJ has been nudged towards the career. Sometimes this was achieved by the parents bringing home case studies, trying to stimulate curiosity in the young man. After this tactic began to fail, the parents began explaining how to fix every injury the child managed to get. A broken arm? Let’s spend the next hour going over why it broke in the first place while we set it using both magic and muggle methods. Did you get poison ivy? Well what plants can be used to help decrease the symptoms the patient is experiencing? RJ had been drilled on the subject to the point where he avoids it like the plague. He knew his parents meant well but unlike his sister, healing has never been that interesting to the young man. Despite his own views, he still lets his parents believe that this is the field he will be going into. It is easier to lie than to try to explain to a family of healers that you’re just not that good at it.

At Seiseux, RJ is able to relax. He may not excel at his classes like his sister, but he does try. It takes him longer than most to learn a spell, especially if he is not given hands-on training on how to say the spell and which motions to use. Attempting to learn on his own will only lead to confusion and backfiring spells. The one field he truly excels at is on the quodpot field. That is where he feels his true home is and that is where he does not have to rely on anything other than his own instinct. Roman spends more time on his broom practicing the sport than he does attempting to read his textbooks. He does use a tutor for almost all of his classes just to keep any bad grades from returning to his parents. The last thing he wants is to have his parents start paying more attention to how he spends his days.

JOYEAU
Sorry this took so long! It was a neck to neck tie with Taureau but he's a bit fanciful for them! Maya is now going to start calling him "Fancy". You know I love the way you take the jock stereotype and manage to push it outside it's box. He's everything a jock should be - seemingly unintelligent, athletic, reckless, and brutish! On a deeper layer, he's vulnerable especially with concerns to his disability. His desire to change himself from his father is endearing too as most of us have clashed with our parents at some point. I cannot wait to see where RJ goes and if he beats those pesky dementors!
