'Kettering or Bust' |

One good thing about visiting these Gang Shows out of Town is it gives me a chance to visit parts of the Country unknown to me before. The journey across Town when most of the underground network were closed was interesting as it gave me a chance to visit with hundreds of others tube stops not visited by 'man or beast' as they used to say. The train to kettering seemed to take an age although as it was dark I had no notion of where I was or infact where I was going !? At Kettering Station I asked at the ticket office if they knew where 'The Lighthouse Theatre' was ? I was told to look at a map situated outside of the actual Station. The map must have been placed there sometime in the 1960's and made no mention of the 'Lighthouse Theatre' or any other Theatre for that matter !? Ouside of the Station there was a local Bus....Ah ! Salvation......No he didn't know either. I could see the local Church up the Road so I headed up the way.The Weather was at it's most grim with heavy rain. In the Town Centre I found the only shop open and asked again. The Woman in the shop was surprised to see me and explained that it was quite a trek to the theatre. As time was getting on I set of at a quick trot.It was only when I seemed to be walking along an unlit road between two fields that my quest to visit certain Gang Shows seemed not such a good idea,as certain cars slowed down to see if this person was up to no good or what !? At last I came across a sign to the Golf Club which with luck I followed this took me to a Conference Centre and the 'Lighthouse Theatre' Although I was extremely wet I went inside picked up my ticket and met those Scouters that I had arranged to meet. Apart from those I was fortune enough to meet I was introduced to a number of others involved in Scouting and the Gang Show. The Show was Great and contained many of the pieces that were recognisable as pure Gang Show. The journey home took hours and I ended up getting the last underground train and the last overground train with a long walk at the other end.At 1:45am I was returned to my Family. They had been out up to town for Dinner and a Play at the National Theatre.......Never mind I know who had the better evening !! Today I went to yet another briefing on the 'Mental Health of Young People'.The theme was in fact 'More for Less'-More Young Patients less resources to deal with them..? The triggers that can fire bouts of Depression and Anxiety related Disorders can seem quite mild. Not being in Education,Training or Work can be very isolating and some Young Peoples conditions can include not being able to even get out of bed.The problem with all these Cases is that Young People can easily become forgotten. So that a Depressive episode can become a full scale Psychosis even when the Young Persons GP has given them Psychotropic Drugs to treat their presenting symptoms. In the 1930's when Unemployment was at it's highest 'Rover Scouts' who's Moto was 'Service' offered many 'Young Men' a way of supporting themselves Psychologically and emotionally.I wonder if 'Explorer Scouts' and 'The Scout Network' can in fact do the same in the 2000's ? I don't know I hope it can although I would be interested to learn how many of the '1,000,000' Young People are members of the Scouts or any other Youth Organisation for that matter ? The sad fact is that very many are not , and their numbers are growing all the time.Isolation,Unemployment,Depression,Despair and Worhlessness are such killers of 'Youth Spirit' that it's very hard to imagine many Young People going through this process without permanent damage. In the 1930's Young People moved from the 'Dole' [unemployment] on to the War.Without the proper range of opportunity for these Young People it's difficult to see any signs of a bright future. The Police are here,ParaMedics are here we even have some Fire Fighters who have brought in a young girl with a badly burnt back. There are 28 cases chalked up and it's my 9:00pm break. If this email had sound you would want me to turn it off.We are fully staffed and everybody is having to be extra good at what they do.If Scouting is about anything it about working in a Team. And that's what we are having to do.The Team I work with are just wonderful and we look out for each other. One of the problems is that Young People don't do that and in London there are Posters with Photographs of a frightened looking Adolescent with the script which says."Look Out For Your Mates,Don't Leave Them On The Road To Die".I think Scouts do form friendship bonds.Looking around there are some very, very scared hurt Young People waiting to be treated.Although parents are notified of an addmission very few turn up infact many slam the phone down and one who came to the Hospital earlier this evening said he would kill me if his Son was sent home !!Oh yes I forgot to mention we have a number of Social Workers who's role is to get places of safety for these kids. This in many cases does not mean a return to their home. This for many, many young people is where they are least Safe !!!!! Just Think About That.'Least Safe.....' Dr.Stu.. |

Friday night was quite a 'Horror Night' as the number of young Patients arrived with a range of injuries sustained on the streets near to the Hospital. There had been groups of boys who were riding past younger Children and slashing them with an assortment of blades. Most of those assaulted were with there Mothers some of whom had also sustained cuts and abrasions. If Halloween is supposed to make fear an enjoyable experience for young children than Friday Night's experience for those we saw at the Hospital certainly didn't miss the mark.Although many will certainly carry a scar in their minds as well !! About the only time I leave the comforts of Home and London is to see a 'Gang Show'.Conferences can be accessed on Line and there are other ways of seeing what or where places are.Newcastle is another world although about forty minutes by Plane from London.Such a great experience though.I had already met Dave the DC for the District who had been the Producer for the Show. This year his Deputy Producer Denise Gates was in Charge.I was able to speak to her briefly about her Show. She is such a smashing person and I could see all the hard word over a six months period that had gone into this Show. The Junior members of the Cast were just so confident in all their singing, stage work and words that it was certainly one of the best 'First Nights' for a Gang Show that I had seen. The Musical Director Gareth Miller had to cope with directing his 'Gang Show Band' via 'Video Link' as the 'Theatre' !? or they may call it a 'Performance Space' was so poorly designed that the 'Band' could not play'front of Stage'.There was was some familiar faces from the Newcastle Show that I had seen earlier in the year and in fact I gather that to quote an 'insider' "Newcastle share our personnel around".Whitley Bay is just three weeks away and that should be another 'Cracking Show' again to quote another 'Northern Contact'.In London Terms I think it means "Jolly Good" !! 'Scouts who still wet the bed' |

We have tried a slightly different approach to the problem of boys, and it is mostly boys, who still at ages 11 to 14 wet the bed.For Beavers,Cubs,Scouts and even some Explorers taking part in a 'Sleep Over' even at their 'Scout Hut' or 'Church Hall'can give rise to extra feelings or anxiety and fear and the inevitable happens and a boy can wet the bed or sleeping bag.The Scout Association does give guide lines to help with the situation. As part of the 'Health and Well Being' Project I introduced a series of subjects presented to the Scouts as things that could go wrong for boys in situations that may be new or difficult and I introduced the idea that what could 'Scouts Say' to make other 'Scouts feel' good about themselves particularly if there was something that other boys might see as funny or difficult. I said that any Scout who was likely to wet the bed should, out of consideration to the other Scouts, wear a nappy. Although the Scouts were quite taken aback not only that I should be so dogmatic and uncaring but that I thought it alright that a fellow Scout should wear a nappy. When I said that we had spent far too much time on the topic and they should play a game a number of the boys asked me if I was joking about the nappy !? 'Nope' I said. What would they do ? At this point I hoped that they would become the experts and advise me of a proper response. This was much more difficult as I asked them if they had ever wet the bed as boys rather than babies ? It was obvious that at least three of the boys had, although nobody said anything. I said that in fact I had no intention of making anybody wear a nappy but I was interested in what they might have thought about what I had said. As one of the Scouts said "I like it better Dr.Stu when you think you are being funny..!" Remember.A Scout Whistles and Smiles. Dr.Stu.. |

On facebook we have our group and our page and at present we update both of them which means we are having to add the same updates onto both of them. We are considering phasing out updates for the group with a view to using the page as our main part of facebook.
We are aware that less than half of the members of the group are fans of the facebook page, so if you are not already a fan feel free to become one: http://scoutforum.org.uk/index.php?showforum=48
The way facebook pages work is better tailored for keeping updated - the pages status updates will appear in your news feed just like a friend would.
Our aim is to get as many of you as possible to become a fan of the page as soon as possible thus keeping you all up to date.
On our facebook page and twitter feed you will be given the chance to tell us what you think and help us make the site better. |

There is a new 'well being' project that I have been asked to make suggestions and perhaps contributions to or about which I can see might be quite difficult in that the leader of the project is themselves 'overweight'.As those in this particular Group are all Cubs and one of the key features is 'exercise' and 'healthy eating' there is a conflict between how the Cubs view their 'Leader' and how the 'Leader' sees himself. As at least three of the Cubs have no contact with their Fathers and have all Women teachers at their School the 'Cub Leaders' role as an 'adult male' role model is I think 'quite important'. I have had one conversation with the Leader that didn't go too well as he felt I was being judgemental and I felt I was was trying to get him to see that the members[the Cubs] view of him was more than just a 'Cub Leader'. I have no idea what he does and certainly has no idea about me although knows that i'm a Doctor and that is why I have been asked to make a contribution to this particular project. Although we talk about a 'Scouting Family' and a friendship in Scouting of whatever 'Social Class' people come from there are such large health and life chance inbalance in Society that there are certainly resentments even within Scouting. I am due to meet with the Leader again early next week and to try to work out a Programme of activities and games that we think will help the cubs to 'feel' and 'become more healthy'. The new logo has arrived |

After working hard on it over the last 24 hours or so, I am delighted to announce that the brand new Scout Forum UK logo has been launched on all outlets, including the forums, facebook page, facebook group and twitter.
This logo is designed using the Scout fonts and it uses the scout blue. As you can see the arrowhead logo is incorporated into it. Those of you who saw the sneak preview on here a month or so ago can see that its similar to that one, but not quite the same.
The plan is that in the coming weeks we will be releasing some new graphics using the new logo, including web banners.
As previously announced we are currently supporting the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal so for the next month we are sporting a poppy. |

I am pleased to announce that in the run up to Rememberance Day on the 11th November, Scout Forum UK will be proudly wearing a poppy in support of the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2009. Our poppy will be encorporated into a red poppy themed version of our logo. Along with this we plan to put up a link so that people can donate to the Poppy Appeal.
Keep an eye out for our poppy themed logo, appearing soon.
