There are three accepted groups of shapeshifters: skin walkers, werebeasts, and shifters. ( we are open to different types outside of these normals as well. These are just the ‘big three’ if you will.) What is a shifter? They are the most boring, and most intriguing, category of shape changers. Their physical change does not grant them extra strengths, but the androgynous nature of the transformation has caused many of them to be worshipped in small villages around the world, and even called gods in the past.
Shifters change....their gender. In mythology, great beings often change their sex to accomplish their goals. Today this power isn’t quite as mainstream, but it is an interesting tool in an arsenal of tricky tricks. Gender Benders unite! How did that happen?Well, they did it to themselves. As narcissistic as that sounds, they really did. A bored prince summoned a demon and demanded he be made as beautiful outside as he was in his mind. The demon responded with spite and merriment and turned him into a female and then disappeared.
The prince, shocked, had his best summoners recall the demon and demanded he remove the curse. The demon refused, but offered him another deal: the ability to dance between two worlds. Intrigued, the prince accepted and got exactly what he asked for: control over his shifting abilities that flip-flopped his body between man and woman.
Amusingly, he was satisfied with this outcome. All his children carried the same predisposition towards transformations. Tragically, if a member of his linage became pregnant, they would die during childbirth. So they were forbidden to ever get pregnant as women: as men they were still encouraged to spread their seed around.
Demonic curses can be huge hindrances, but beings slapped beneath the weight of such magics are often imbued with many other attributes. Shifters have many strengths and secret abilities that other creatures lack. They are a great force and, while each is uniquely strong in their own ways, each kind must be respected. Out of curiosity, why did you decide a gender switching shape changer was more intriguing than one that could turn into an actual creature?Actually, it wasn’t a choice I made on my own. Before deciding on the three types of shape changers, we researched extensively various historic references on beings that could change their forms. (seriously: my bookshelf at home is over flowing with history books about werewolves, their lore, and anthropometric usages. It is nice to be well read.)
As common place as the wolves, leopards, and hyena beasts that are known famously now because of popular media, it is quite amusing to me that these animals were each isolated by their own lands and mass hysteric ideals. There was very little over lapping of the types: either your people were being eaten by wolves or they were being ripped apart by hyena. Not both.
But throughout all superstitious cultures there are many stories about people in their societies who could change their genders at will.
The majority of times, these people were regarded as the chosen ones, respected and worshiped for their amazing abilities to ‘walk between’ the sexes. It is rare for a shape changer to be so reveled, but gender flippers really had it good in the old days.
For this reason, shifters of gender are rarely going to be viewed as a negative thing to be on the forum. To reflect their rich history, we see them as the true shape shifter. The lions, tigers, and bears are just posers to these kids. So...no animal? That is correct. No animal form for these Shifters. They only get furry if they forget to shave for a few days. They are the most human of all the Other creatures.
That does not make them weak, however. Do not think to look down on a Shifter. They are not preoccupied with finding places to hide to change, do not indulge in stupid turf wars, and have no need to hunt their dinner down in the dark of night. The privileges of human life welcome them, so they have a lot of time on their hands for strengthening their minds.
Be wary of a coy smiling Shifter. That bitch is probably up to something bad. Then how do they know which gender they are supposed to be?They are both genders all the time, but at any given time only one can express itself visibly. They do not get hung up on ‘him’ or ‘her’ titles as much as you think.
Some Shifters find it easier to label themselves as a male or female: just like any person alive they just might have a preference one way or the other. They are just lucky because they can actually put their preferences into practice. When do they transform for the first time?Probably while they are still in their mother’s womb. Their gender flipping is a part of who they are from conception. It is not something they develop at puberty like other shape changers.
Must make those ‘what sex is it’ visits at the doctor a real treat to behold! Are they contagious; I mean, can anyone become a shifter?Shifters are always born and cannot be created through infections. How big of a tranformation is it between the two genders? How big? Now children, that’s such a private question!
Haha, just kidding. To answer this question: EVERYTHING male will turn female during the change. Remember that the human body between the sexes all essentially have all the same parts, their bodies just use certain bits in different ways.
Genitals will invert, breasts will swell, hips will bounce, and muscles will soften when a male allows his lady side to step in. And everything will go in the reserve when the male side wants to come out. Does it hurt?Surprisingly: not at all. Their transformation is the easiest switch of any shape changer. It is so smooth that some Shifters may even accidentally switch genders without knowing it as they go about their daily lives. Is it common for them to change without knowing it? Do they have some kind of control over the change? They can easily change their gender with a simple thought. The problem is how much a part of their body both sexes are at the same time. If they don’t put a little effort into what they are doing they can easily flip-flop around between their genders.
It is not unheard of for a lovely, high heel and mini skirted fox of a lady to suddenly turn into a beefy muscle headed man without warning. Too bad their clothes does not change with them, though, as that dude will still be tottering around in those heels and showing off more than he ever wanted to in that skirt.
It’s a charmed life being a shifter. You better have a sense a humor or you’ll go crazy early.
It is not unheard of, it is important to note, for a Shifter to not have full control over their changes. An uncertain or emotionally unstable individual could easily bounce around between the genders without warning simply because they lack the peace of mind to control even the easiest of things in their life. Is the male and female sides the same person, or unique personalities in the same body?We are open to the idea of a split personality separated through their gender, but for the most part the brain remains the same between each transformation. So you are the same person with the same thoughts, memories, and feelings. Its just their body that decides to go fun house mirror on them. Do they have any other special powers? They turn their girl parts into boy parts. That isn’t enough for you?
Shifters are a very tough branch of shape changers. They may often find themselves the butt of many jokes, yet they are an amazingly sophisticated transformer whose seamless self control helps put them out ahead of the pack.
They are scary fast learners. You’d think they had extra folds in their brains, with the male and female parts both active at all time working together, helping them to strategize and pull off some pretty amazing feats with seemingly no effort.
Say, they want to learn karate and freerun up a vertical park wall. What would take a professional a week to perfect will only take a Shifter about ten minutes. Not that they will flaunt their new talent, mind you: they get bored with it pretty quick and move on to their next brain teaser: like building and defusing a bomb during their preschool years, or designing cures for diseases so unreal no one will patent them even though they are sure they are correct.
Many Shifters get high profile jobs, like lawyers and doctors.
They are also natural Summoners, able to call demons to their aid without as much flair and strain as exorcists. They rarely have to form contracts either to get their jobs done: for them its more like asking their three times removed cousin to help them out for a little while. The cousin may hate it, but they’ll still stick around and help their distant non-demonic relative. Can exorcists control them?Hell to the No. Shifters are not demonic, even if they were created through a demonic curse. The curse was later ‘upgraded’ to a gift which we believe helped to purify its essence. Or whatever.
But, on the flip side, almost all Shifters have some innate ability to Summon demons. Recall, the original Shifter was a guy that SUMMONED a demon. So the start of their entire gene pool started with a human summoner.
Not all Shifters know how to summon, mind you. The ability is simply there should they ever feel the need to hone it. Is silver dangerous to them? The idea that werewolves and other shape changing beasts can be fatally harmed by silver seems to be as common as ants at picnics; they appear to make sense on the surface, but you never really see either one pan out in the end.
For silver, the element and substance itself, to react negatively with a shifter it would have to have a substantial amount of sulfur in its body; that’s what silver reacts against.
This would also mean that all beasts funk of BO 24/7, which would make them stand out in a dinning hall like a wart on a nose.
But having a weakness, even while implausible, can be entertaining. So we like to think shifters just have an allergic intolerance to things made of silver. After all, even normal humans can be allergic to silver (the writer of this article being one of them!) .
As far as we know, Shifters do not appear to be affected by silver in any form. Many actually wear it openly as if in defiance. What can kill them?Anything that can kill a human can kill a Shifter. They are not immortal. If they aren’t immortal, are they at least long lived?A Shifter’s lifespan is quite normal honestly. 80 years is probably about average. They age at about the same rate as a normal human. What happens when they die, which form would they be in?They die and depending on which gender they are at the time of death will be their final form.
