WELCOME
TO THE JUNGLE

Our dragons aren't shiny. Our riders aren't always in touch with reality. Our alien menace isn't a mindless threat from the sky; it's crafty and predatory and it will hit you where it hurts. Welcome to Nightwatch Weyr. Try not to die.

THE FUCK IS GOING ON

Mutant dragons! It's official. Not only does Nightwatch have an abnormally high rate of hatching whites, but it seems red and black dragons are here to stay as well. Is it the Blight? Or is it some genetic oddity originating from the clutching greens? More importantly, will it ultimately benefit the weyr, or harm it?

Unrest in Weyr and Hold! - Continued dissatisfaction with the Weyrleadership, rationing in effect, frustrated Holdfolk grumbling at the heavy tithes...

Wher rescue! After search parties sent into the jungle by Nightwatch were assaulted - and not all of them returned - Wingleader C'ross has coordinated a daring expedition to nearby Edinnu Island, in hopes of finding and rescuing the lost whers and their handlers.

CONDITIONS
SUNNY SKIES, SLIGHT CHANCE OF APOCALYPSE

Season: Autumn

Fall is perhaps the most pleasant season at Nightwatch. The southern end of the island is entering a dry season (or, well, drier) and the humidity is no longer intolerable all the time, nor is the heat so stifling. The northern end of the island boasts temperatures that are pleasantly cool and crisp without ever quite reaching "too chilly". Occasional windy days require alertness from riders, but for the most part, the weather is almost enough to make you forget the eldritch horrors.

Timeline

Stuff happened. And then more stuff happened. All of it was awful.

Lessa and Ramoth do their thing. Discovery of first white dragon. AIVAS rediscovered.
200-60 years ago
More whites hatched. Timing it becomes more common practice, albeit with strict supervision. Dragonriders brag that timing it will become the answer to all of Pern's troubles: whenever disaster threatens, a rider will simply arrive to offer advance warning and minimize damage. Advancement of new AIVAS crafts, including development of printing, advances in medicine, and the discovery of gunpowder.
First incursion by Deep Ones. Benden Weyr is decimated - all queens killed in a single day. All of Pern is shocked and mystified by the seemingly random destruction.
After nearly a Turn of complete silence, no repeats of the Benden Massacre, weyrs begin to relax their guard. Shortly after, attacks begin again - less deadly and concentrated this time, just randomly picking off dragons from all weyrs. Weyrs attempt to fight back using same tactics they used during Threadfall, to very little effect. Thirteen years of panicked struggle.
M'ska and Descanth, newly graduated wingriders at Igen Weyr, make an accidental misjump between when attempting to fight a Deep One. End up in Dusk. Discovery of the Dusk's potential as Pern's salvation. The green pair teaches other riders and dragons how to jump into the Dusk, but only greens come back alive - leads to the widespread belief that only greens can survive the jump.
45-30 years ago
More advancements - riders figure out how to choose particular destinations in the Dusk so that they arrive in formation, for instance. Discovery that blues and browns can also make it into the Dusk, but faster and more maneuverable dragons have a better chance - slower dragons tend to get caught and killed very quickly. Number of incursions in normal space lessen drastically, as most fights now occur in the Dusk. However, most weyrs are still taking heavy casualties.
Nightwatch Weyr is founded. An attempt to redesign weyr structure from the ground up, completely discarding old-fashioned Threadfall fighting methods in favor of what works best against Deep Ones.
No Weyr will transfer a queen to Nightwatch; however, several weyrs send over weyrlings. One of these, a greenweyrling, Rises and clutches for the first time. At first thought to be an isolated phenomenon, when more greens start clutching at Nightwatch - and only at Nightwatch - it is gradually realized that the greens are reacting to the absence of a gold.
Monaco and Honshu Weyrholds both drop off the map without warning. No SOS or even indications of an attack: one day the weyrholds are fine, the next they are empty and utterly devoid of life. This is widely believed by other Weyrs to be a retaliatory strike after turns of aggressive hunting by Nightwatch. Landing is abandoned, the riders there merging with Southern for greater safety.
Telgar is besieged by the largest amassing of Deep Ones ever sighted in normal space at one time. No sign of the strange monster, the Abyssal, that wiped out Benden... but hundreds, even thousands of the lesser types, all swarm Telgar, all at once. Dragonriders hold them off for as long as possible, long enough for the senior gold to be evacuated to Fort - and then they raze their own Weyr to the ground rather than let it be overrun. Only a few riders escape.
