Lower Caverns Sturdy stone tunnels lead to the main living quarters of the weyr, as well as the kitchens, crafting workshops, infirmary, storage... Everything, in short, that the weyrfolk would need in the event of a genuine siege. The main unusual feature of Nightwatch's lower caverns are the heavily reinforced doors on every entrance to the outside. They are left open, but can be locked if needed.

Weyrbowl Like most weyrs, Nightwatch was excavated from a natural caldera. Ledges and tunnels line the bowl's walls, leading to rider weyrs. In the center, a grassy field provides an ideal landing place for dragons. There is no lake on Nightwatch's grounds, but the nearby falls and beaches make for easy access to bathing and fishing.

Hatching Sands Inset into the wall of the caldera is a smaller cavern, partly sheltered and partly open to the air. The hatching sands of Nightwatch are small, scaled for a green rather than a gold, and with only a few rows of stands for seating. They were a late addition, rather than a part of the original weyr plans. The geothermal activity keeps the sands blistering hot to incubate eggs.

Rider Weyrs Lining the inner walls of the caldera are ledges leading to the weyrs where riders are quartered. They are relatively small and spartan, not needing to accomodate anything larger than a brown dragon, but riders are welcome to decorate their personal weyrs as they see fit. Lower weyrs can be reached on foot via stairs or tunnels, while higher ones can only be reached by the air.

Weyrling Barracks The ground-level weyrs are reserved for weyrlings who have not yet reached the manned flight portion of their training. As weyrling classes are small, at any given time many of the weyrling rooms will be empty - unless they are being used for injured riders and dragons, who are also quartered here.

Weyrfolk Quarters There are no true "Candidate barracks" at Nightwatch - all weyrfolk of the appropriate age to Impress a dragon are considered Candidates. Nor are Candidates relegated only to specific chores. As a result, all weyrfolk are quartered together.

Nightwatch Hold Nightwatch Hold is shaped somewhat like a crescent moon around the caldera that forms the Weyr. The natural crater wall forms a divide between Weyr and Hold, but a large tunnel - large enough for two dragons to walk through abreast - allows for easy passage even on foot. The Hold is largely cropland and pasture with scattered buildings, although many crafters also set up shop here.

Falls Perhaps a mile north of the Hold's main gates, an easy hike, lie the falls. A broad, swift-flowing stream tumbles over a twenty-foot cliff and into a deep pool, framed on all sides by overhanging trees that provide shade and places for weyrbrats to climb. The stream at the top is shallow enough to wade in, but the pool at the bottom is deep enough to bathe a dragon, if not quite deep enough for the browns to fully submerge. The trail to the falls is well-traveled and clearly marked, but it's still not a good idea to traverse at night.

Beaches White sands, crystalline blue water, flits and spiderclaws hiding among the beach grasses... The shores of Nightwatch Island are a jewel waiting to be discovered. It'd be a lovely vacation spot if not for the constant threat of bandit ships. Dragonriders are more or less safe - no one's going to bother an angry firebreathing carnivore that just wants to take a swim. Other weyr residents would be wise to bring a friend for protection.

No-Man's-Land Mostly jungle towards the southern end of the island, with the northern end phasing into grassland and rocky cliffs, there is one constant across all areas of the island that are not within Nightwatch's walls: you don't want to be caught out there after dark. Not unless you're well-armed and in a large group, anyway. There are feral whers, wild felines, bandits, and the occasional Deep One to contend with. On the other hand... who knows what secrets the largely untapped island might hold?

Bandit Camp At the far northern tip of the island, the opposite end from the Weyr, lies the main bandit encampment. Smaller groups may make camp all over the island, but the main force lives in the cliffsides overlooking a sheltered bay. Natural cave formations make for ideal living quarters, the bay makes an excellent hiding place for ships, while unpredictable winds and rocky cliff walls make it difficult for dragons to attack from the air.

The Skies The skies above Nightwatch Island. Mating flights take here, as do wing drills, aerial skirmishes, and anything else that would take place mid-flight. Check the sidebar to get an idea of current weather conditions!

Edinnu Island From the water, Edinnu looks unpleasant and foreboding. Twin volcanic peaks, tall cinder cones, stand stark against the horizon. The beaches are black sand strewn with chunks of volcanic rock and a few hardy plants; this is not the gentle paradise of Nightwatch, but a wasteland.

Lava Tubes Beneath the surface of Edinnu is a maze of lava tubes, remnants of some long-ago eruption. The largest of these tubes are easily two or three times the height of a man, whereas some are so narrow that they must be crawled through. They also form a natural labyrinth - anyone entering without a guide or some means of tracking their path is likely to be lost forever.
