FRAN MERIDA is set to thrash out a new two-year deal and stay Arsenal.

The Spanish teenager, who scored a stunner in last week's Carling Cup win over Liverpool, is out of contract at the end of the season.

Boss Arsene Wenger blocked a loan move to Levante last season. But fears have been mounting that he could quit the Emirates for nothing and return to his homeland.

Atletico Madrid are desperate to snap up Merida, 19, along with a host of other La Liga clubs.

But his agent, Joseba Diaz, insists the young striker wants to stay a Gunner.

Diaz said: "I am coming to London to discuss a new two-year deal with Arsenal with whom we have a very warm relationship."

FRAN MERIDA is set to pen a new contract at Arsenal.

SunSport revealed yesterday that the Spaniard, 19, wanted to thrash out a two-year deal.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admits he wants the player, who is out of contract next summer, to stay for longer.

Wenger said: "Fran has agreed but has not signed yet.

"It's massive for us. He's ready to be a regular now."

The first-team restrictions Fran Merida currently faces at Arsenal (he is largely limited to League Cup appearances) have prompted the press to speculate over the player's future, considering his talent and potential, and Atletico Madrid were reportedly pondering whether or not to make a winter window bid for the burgeoning midfielder.

Merida, though, has expressed his willingness to remain at Arsenal, as he is benefitting under the tutelage of renowned French coach Arsene Wenger.

The Spain Under-21 international is reported to have told Sport: "I am committed to Arsenal and I am only thinking of playing there.

"I feel I am improving every day and the manager is now involving me more in first team training."

Wenger has spoken out over the interest in his 19-year-old asset. He recently said: "Some clubs are doing their work behind our back to destabilise him."

Rumours have linked a number of Arsenal academy products with possible Ashburton Grove exits, as Barcelona were linked with moves for Arsenal Under-18 pair Benik Afobe and Chukwuemeka Aneke.

Fran Merida's agent Joseba Diaz has told Radio Marca that he cannot understand why Atletico Madrid have not made a bid for the young Arsenal midfielder and says the player is wanted by a number of clubs in Europe.

"I do not know what Atletico are waiting for in bidding for a player [Merida] who has half of Europe after him," Diaz commented.

Diaz also said that although Merida was a fan of Los Colchoneros as a kid, things have changed and the 19-year-old, who is currently on duty with the Spain Under-21 side, now has his sights set on remaining with the Gunners.

"It's true that as a child he was 'sick' about Atletico but everything has changed a bit. Now his heart and head are with Arsenal," he noted.

"There are much falsehoods in the world of football because the players do not decide what team they play for. The priority now is to negotiate with Arsenal and in the future we'll see. The desire is to keep him at Arsenal and succeed."
