Clichy isn't a big loss considering his form this season but Gibbs isn't exactly the ideal replacement over a long period. He's even more suspect defensively than Clichy. It's a good opportunity for him to get a good run in the side and show what he can do though.

Top of the league....

No surprise there (interesting link, BTW).

This is definitely something that the manager needs to look at. Because I would bet that we are top or almost top of this depressing league every season.

I couldn't help but wish that we had done something similar to Chelsea when I read this.

It is very interesting that the omerta around the club seems to have been broken this season with these rumours of our players being trained too hard. Knowing AW, this is something that he is aware of - and percieves that the benefit of being even fitter than the rest of the pack (who now condition their teams far more than when he arrived in England), is worth the risk of losing players.

I disagree to a point with those who blithely say that we have backups, or that the current injury list is mainly subs. IMO almost every injury has an effect on planning and continuity. A settled first team has to be worth at least 10 to 12 points a season, and while its good that Gibbs has first team experience - it won't help our back 5.

Gael Clichy's back injury is almost identical to the one which ruled him out for the final 11 games of last season.

The French defender completed 90 minutes against Tottenham on Saturday but has since been ruled out for "a few weeks" with a suspected stress fracture.

Clichy sat out the business end of last term after suffering back trouble in the Champions League Quarter-Final at Villarreal and Arsène Wenger believes the two injuries are related.

"Yes, but it is on the other side, his vertebrae," explained the manager at his pre-match press conference.

"He had a stress fracture on one side and it has happened on the other side. Normally it happens on both sides but his happened [before] on one side. It was a gradual thing.

"He said during the [Tottenham] game that he could play on pain-free but the pain after every game became worse so we made a scan on Monday and we found a little fracture."

Clichy was missing for the final seven weeks of the 2008/09 campaign and had to watch from the sidelines as his team exit the FA Cup and the Champions League at the Semi-Final stage. So how much did the left-back's absence affect the outcome of Arsenal's season?

"It is difficult to know because we lost Gallas as well together," said Wenger. "We lost a lot of experience and it is very difficult to know how much it affected our defence.

"I don't like to change too much at the back. I change the full backs sometimes but the centre backs do not change around much."

Bit worried about Gibbs tbh. Not really very good at defending. Great going forward but we don't need that in a 4-3-3.

Very true, as Tony Adams rightly pointed out though he's a winger and terrific going forward.

Today we effectively had 3 defensive players on the pitch, Gallas, Vermaelen and Song....the rest either can't defend or aren't interested.

3 defensive players just isn't enough to stop goals.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Silvestre, if he doesn't step up soon

AW prioritises attack over defence for fullbacks therefore I don't think he'll be too concerned....plus Silvestre isn't exactly a good option.

Didn't he slip for their goal?

Becoming a CL habit for him now. Humph.gif

Big-game bottler, tbf.

The kid's a failure.

Awful player.

Get rid.

Play Silvestre - he's better going forward, at least.

Here we go with backs again. What do we do in training or in warm-ups to backs.

Do we use the Chuckle Brothers as massuers?

Rio apart, other clubs maybe get one back injury to a player a season. Other players get back injuries & they might have to start a match from the bench or play it at 90%.

Our players get back injuries & it's a month out - and three or four at a time.

Denilson - 3 months out back injury, Walcott first two months out back injury, Clichy month out back innjury.

Still, Gibbs looks better anyway.

Add Ramsey to that too - yet another back injury.

Not sure you can pin this on our medical staff as it happened on internationals but I'm sure they'd have had a hand in it somehow.
