it is december. the aftermath of the bomb (or exploding man, depending how 'in the know' you are) has started to dawn on the citizens of new york, and clean-up work has just begun.

very cold. in most places, the temperature is below zero degrees. snow lies everywhere, and gets thicker and thicker with every day, and harsh winds make the winter even colder.

a memorial service is being held in three weeks to remember all of the unfortunate heroes that lost their lives to the bomb blast killing over half the population of new york. will any heroes or villains make an appearance?

After Effy and Katrina little conversation, Niall had noting that Effy had looked at him again, probably trying to see what his reaction to what was happening was. Niall did his best not to show anything, not to give away any emotion. He didn’t want to see sympathetic just incase she turned on him, Niall knew that really he didn’t stand any form of chance against her, lightning versus speed wasn’t much of a contest, all he could do was run around, if she knew where he was, he lost his greatest ally, surprise, and without that, Niall would probably lose just about ever single straight up fight he was involved in, with another evolved human like Effy and Katrina simply because he wasn’t strong enough to take them on straight on, which was why he had needed to sneak up on Katrina after she had began to run, and he needed to come in from an unexpected angle also, so she didn’t see him coming, and hence couldn’t react. And then he didn’t want to appear to happy or supportive of what she had done, just incase Effy decided that he was only acting like that because he was afraid of her, and because he didn’t want to get hurt if he was seem to not be supportive of her. So he just had to appear completely neutral, and hopefully not give off any indications of sympathy, or fear. The only problem was that he wasn’t really completely sure how to show this, so had only done his best.

Niall even felt a little bit full of himself for what he had managed to do, knocking Katrina to the ground. The choice had even been simple as well, as he had seen with the guy who had teleported off, anyone who seemed to oppose Effy got hurt, normally quite badly. Still she hadn’t turned up around the area yet, and that left Niall to wait, wondering just where she was. He wasn’t going to run off just now, not until he found out what would happen when Effy arrived. It would be a little but interesting, considering that Effy seemed to be pretty intent on hurting, and possibly killing Katrina, though Niall was a little afraid of how she would do it, whether it would be quickly, or draw it out. Either way could possibly get Niall hurt if he was too near however, and Niall didn’t exactly plan on getting hurt to much, actually he didn’t plan on getting hurt at all if he could help it, which hopefully with his power shouldn’t actually prove to be that difficult a mission brief.

Too bad it was a little bit too late for that, as a flash of fire caught the corner of his eye, and all he could do was turn around to face the flames which seemed to engulf him completely. ”FUCK!” It was the last word he heard himself say before he felt himself forced back, and falling straight to the floor, his entire body writhing in pain, and smoke erupting in large billows out of his clothes. He felt a little funny through all the pain, and like he might be paralysed, or at least he couldn’t move anything without it causing him pain, lots of pain. He wanted to kill the bitch now, just kill her, forget it if Effy had wanted to kill her, Niall would do that now, if he could just stand up, but clearly he couldn’t, he felt simply too weak, helpless, and pathetic. This was confirmed several moments later as he screamed, falling back down as he had attempted to sit up, at least if he had been able to do that then he would have been able to attempt to stand up, but he simply found it to be impossible. All he could do was roll around a little bit, and even that hurt, but it spread the pain out across his body a little bit more, made it more even, and hurt a little bit. All this did was fill him with more and more rage, every pain he felt increased this, made him want to hurt Katrina even more.

At this point, Niall was able to see that Effy had finally managed to turn up, and was deciding to show her face. She seemed to smile at him slightly, like she was pleased with what he had done. It was just a shame he was now lying on the floor, in complete agony. Or maybe she wasn’t happy with what he had done, and was more happy with him lying there in pain, instead of anything else, she seemed cruel enough to be like that instead. He yelled out in pain again, rolling so he could just about see what was going on, though his eyes where barely opening now. Everything just seemed to have gone wrong for him, though at least he wasn’t in Katrina’s position. "Bye, Katrina," So finally it was happening, finally it was going to end, and Niall was going to find out what was going to happen to Katrina, and how she was going to die, "Guess I’ll have to break it to Lana. But don’t worry! She won’t miss you. No-one ever will." It was actually on hearing this that Niall realised, he didn’t want Katrina to die. At least he didn’t want her to die until he had taken his revenge on her for what she had done to him, the pain that she had caused to him, that was still stinging quite badly. All he could see around himself now was a fury of yellow sparks, dancing around him, striking him, causing pain on his already burnt and burning skin. His power was turning in on him, and he yelled out in severe pain. At least there wasn’t that much smoke left to cover him, or to choke him. Now it was pain, simple pain. He couldn’t stand it, he couldn’t put up with it anymore, and he felt his own power shoot him up and down on off the ground a couple of centimetres, and then dropping him back down again. He screamed out in pain again, this must he what Katrina was about to feel as well, with all of that electricity about to pass through her.

The lightning had almost certainly stuck Katrina by now, as he could hear her cries through the pain he was experiencing. He felt a thud, and crashed onto the ground again, the sparks disappearing again, though the pain was still there. Still, lying down or standing up wouldn’t make any difference to the pain he was in now, would it, no it shouldn’t, and somehow, though the limited movement that Niall found he now only held, he managed to pick himself up a little bit again, looking over at Effy as he stood up again. He wanted to see her reaction again, see how she was acting towards what she had just done.

Effy’s head was pounding – bump, bump, bump – or was it the sound of her heart reverberating in her body? She had to calm herself down – breathe in, one two three four, breathe out, one two three four five six – but it wasn’t working – the adrenaline pulsing through Effy’s veins was making her hurt, and badly – like a whip in the stomach and the back at the same time. As Katrina’s eyes closed and her slowly moving body became still, Effy’s eyes widened as she heard the large bangs of Katrina’s arms giving into temptation and crashing to the floor, making her head hurt more. This was what she’d been pretty much told by the doctor – she had dangerous amounts of electricity in her body and that she wasn’t to do anything stressful – otherwise the consequences would be dangerous. Evidently, Effy hadn’t taken much notice, being the rebellious nearly-seventeen year old she was – and was suffering because of it.

Trying to breathe slowly, wishing she’d brought her inhaler, Effy’s vision began to skewer – everything was out of focus, the landscape, Niall, Katrina’s seemingly dead body – even looking down at her shoes was a blur. Effy narrowed her eyes, and opened them again, but no luck – she was really suffering because of the amount of electricity engulfing her bloodstream. Her eyes flickered from blue to brown – her eyelids flickering open and closed, only fleeting images passing before her eyes. Through her eyes, her tainted vision of being truly in pain and dizziness, it looked as if everyone was hurting – Katrina was hurting, her lifeless arms sinking into the dusty wasteland, Niall was hurting – apparently, he’d gotten the full brunt of the flame throw Effy had half managed to dodge with just a few burns on her face, his ability backfiring as he also fell to the ground, yellow sparks fuzzing before Effy’s eyes. Effy’s breathing became shallower and shallower as she was reduced to her knees with lack of air and too much blood pumping through her veins, reducing everything to slush as her knees slowly gave way, falling directly in between the other two bodies on the floor. What a lovely sight this made. Landing on her head and arm, Effy’s eyes rolled back into her head as her vision finally disappeared, her eyelids closing elegantly as the pain inflicted on herself consumed her.

Was this dying? It sure hurt a lot. Wasn’t dying meant to numb the pain, sever the nerves, and make you stop feeling? Dying was an escape – the way out, the end to the pain, yet this hurt – more than being alive. Effy was flickering in and out of consciousness – her brain working overtime, trying to remember the events of today as much as her body wanted to shut down. However, she wasn’t going to sit there and be useless – that was for people like Katrina and Niall, who were both still on the floor. She needed to remember – a memory she couldn’t forget, to help her stay awake. Effy wasn’t going to surrender herself to the blackness trying in vain to engulf her. I will not be silenced, she told herself, commanding her electric blue eyes to open. However, they wouldn’t, and she was falling, falling through the black, about to throw up. It was an odd sensation, suddenly being airborne. Having her stomach turn to slush as she fell, her head spinning out of control. Surely this should be painful, no? However, the pain Effy’d first felt was calming down, soothing her aching limbs, and Effy smiled, a feeling of luxury rubbing over her. Then, there was a large ripping noise, and everything was quiet. Effy furrowed her brow, and as a shadow crept behind her, she was thrown savagely to one side, her face landing on a large metal board. What... the hell? she thought angrily, and came across a scene that was all too familiar as she hoisted herself up from the floor.

A small girl who looked about seven was sitting in the corner, curled up into a tiny ball, her knees closed up into her chest, shuddering and shaking, but not from the cold. Her red hair was limp and greasy, and the thick pink jumper she was wearing clashed wonderfully with it. Her bright blue inhaler was on the floor, a few yards away from her, and her eyes were closed, tears streaming down her face. Effy’s electrically charged eyes widened slowly, her own eyes prickling. Why had she been brought here – and why now? She needed to be emotionally prepared, not a blubbering wreck. As Effy’s eyes looked over to the other side of the metal monstrosity – usually known as a lift, she closed them again rapidly, knowing exactly what she would find there. The girl’s mother was lying unconscious on the other side of the lift, a large pool of blood around the woman’s head from where she’d fallen from lack of air. The shuddering girl didn’t know what to do – she was torn, frightened, and with the overbearing lack of oxygen hanging in the air like a dead weight, the girl’s eyes began to close, her knees that were held so tight to her chest dropping slowly to the floor, her body following suit, her hand knocking the blue inhaler away as she joined her mother in the realm of the unconscious, falling –

    Enough.

Effy’s eyes snapped open again, her head spinning, lying in the dusty wasteland under the shade of the oil refinery as the memories of what had happened before she’d tripped out, her eyesight coming back to her as she rolled over and looked up at the sky. This wasn’t good – she’d just shown weakness, and Effy felt a pang of pain in her stomach. That really was her worst memory – the one imprinted on her brain every night when she went to sleep – even more terrifying than the one where her father tried to throw out of a window. Her lip trembling precariously, Effy closed her eyes, one single tear running down her face. It was okay to cry every now and again, surely? Especially after experiencing like that, right? Effy pulled her knees into her chest, and whimpered, the same frightened little girl that she had been in the lift that day. It had been a perfectly ordinary day – Effy and her mother had been coming back from a shopping trip late at night, with just her and her mother in the lift as it got stuck in the shaft, the window in the lift getting slammed shut as the lift sped downwards, her mother falling unconscious after calling the helpline, her head hitting the phone as she fell, leaving a trail of blood down the wall. Soon after, Effy had passed out – the help not coming for three hours. Effy shuddered, and got to her feet quickly, trying to shake the memory clean – before she remembered she wasn’t alone.

Niall and Katrina were still around, Katrina still unconscious, Niall still in pain. Effy looked down at the two of them, trying to keep her expression neutral. Niall was still awake, therefore he’d seen her fall. Which wasn’t good – a leader and a villain never showed any signs of backing down or weakness. Despite how Niall was still in pain, he was still wearing a smirk on his face, as if he was the one who’d actually *ahem* killed Katrina. Effy scowled. As Elizabeth Annaliese Taylor, it was her job to make sure people knew their places, and Niall was no exception, even if he had helped her a little. Perhaps minion status was in order, but only if he got that irritating smirk off his face. And of course, it was in typical Effy fashion to beat people when they were down, naturally, even if in this sense it was a verbal attack. Mind you, if she had a whip, she wouldn’t hesitate to use it. Maybe she should invest in one sometime... like that prosecutor Franziska from Phoenix Wright. That was a different story altogether, although she did fancy a whip. But despite her wishes, Effy had no whip, and so the power and force of her equally whipping tongue would have to do instead. Effy had a plan, and despite the fact that Niall had seen her weeping in the dust like some sort of deranged baby changed nothing. She was going through with this plan, whether or not she was perceived as an idiot. After all, she was the one in control here – and now she was emotionally charged, Niall knew as well as her that she wouldn’t hesitate to melt his face off.

“What are you still doing here?” Effy snapped, her voice sharp against the harsh wind. She was still slightly enraged at him for coming across her whilst she was having a total fit – these were best left for private times. “You can leave now. Show’s over, right? So go.” Effy said in a drawling voice, cool and not so collected as always. Lighting up her palm again, Effy gasped as a lightning bolt broke its way down from the sky, missing her sharply as she ducked, the bolt in her palm extinguishing. Was she really that... powerless now? Effy tried again, a little harder this time, hoping very hard she wouldn’t go back into a coma, and this time, the bolt flew into the sky, six more dotting themselves across the wasteland from the blackened sky. That was when Effy realised – she wasn’t the powerless one, she was the powerful one. Shit... thought Effy. This is like... that time... but no... it can’t happen again, can it? If Effy’s suspicions were confirmed, she needed to get Niall away, not just for her, but for him as well. Effy was only human, and Niall was already in pain... another fire bomb and he’d be dead for sure. Effy raised an eyebrow as she sent another six bolts raining down from the sky, as the rain followed. So now she could control the weather. Great. With Katrina almost-dead on the floor, Effy knew that it was very likely history would repeat itself. And she couldn’t let that happen. Oh bloody hell, why didn’t I just kill her? thought Effy, wringing her hands.

“Look, maybe you didn’t hear me properly.” Effy snapped, a hint of desperation to her voice. This was bad... real bad. “You can tell I’m mad, right? Want all of those bolts of lighting to land on your head? No? Good. Then bugger off.” Effy rolled her eyes, waiting for him to obey. If he didn’t, he was a foolish fool foolishly thinking foolish thoughts. Effy snapped her fingers, another small bolt of lightning landing inches from his feet. If he wasn’t running now, he soon would be, Effy could assure him. Waiting for him to leave as the rain plastered her crimson hair to her face, Effy closed her eyes, letting the rain run down her cheeks, replacing the drying tears that lay there. It was a lovely feeling, feeling someone else’s tears there instead of her own – almost as if... she wasn’t alone. Not anymore, at least. The time Effy was thinking about was the time she’d received extreme burns to her arm – burns beyond repair that Effy was currently covering up with her long sleeved purple cardigan. Effy’s cardigan fetish had suddenly sprung up after that ‘incident’ – the one that no-one ever spoke about. All everyone had heard was that the fearsome Elizabeth Taylor had come home with her arm in a sling and that the park had become absolutely trashed. Some said that they saw Katrina Canlton’s eyes turn a dark shade of red like Voldemort’s, but unlike the other two claims, that one came with no solid proof. Effy waited for Niall to leave, and then went about putting her plan into action.

As Effy closed her eyes, slowly turning back to their usual magnificent mahogany colour, she walked over to Katrina Canlton’s lifeless body, her eyes poring over the damage she’d done. There was a large brownish-stain on Katrina’s chest where Effy had burnt the crap out of it, and a few cuts lay over her facial features. Effy wished she had a mirror – to scowl at the damage Katrina had done to her. Effy could feel from the stabbing pains she was doing her best to ignore that she carried some facial burns – that were probably incredibly dark. Hoping she could get them sorted out with some facial reconstruction surgery or something, Effy’s eyes welled up, her perfection damaged. She hadn’t been perfect for a long time – her inside hollow, her eyes empty, the little lights inside of them extinguished when she was merely fourteen. However, this was the first slip in her mask – the first hint of Effy being anything less than perfect shown on her exterior. W-what would Dad think? Effy said, her lip trembling, trying hard not to let more emotions control her. I shouldn’t care – but – I was like him – perfection is everything. Everything to me... and now I’m ruined.

In a rush of emotions, Effy scowled, letting out a scream of frustration, stamping on Katrina’s chest with her pointy-heeled shoes, hoping to produce blood. This was the final straw – Katrina had ruined Effy, which was something that could never be forgiven. Yet, somehow, Effy had spared Katrina... Effy had let her live.

    What was up with that?

Knowing exactly what had to be done next, although it was something completely out of character, Effy dug her heel into the side of Katrina’s body.

“Get up, Katrina. You owe me.” snapped Effy. The words were true... even if Katrina didn’t exactly know how yet.

As Katrina lay with her side against the dusty surface of the ground, there were several things running through her mind. One. Shit. She was screwed and screwed wasn’t a strong enough word. Katrina was literally on her broken arm and she had a bad feeling that the bone had fractured in another place because of the screaming pain coming from it. It was either that or the double thick cast had broken from her fall and was the reason she was biting of her tongue to stop her yelling out. Two. Katrina wasn’t dead. That was somewhat strange. She was sure that Effy had that look in her eyes that meant, “I eat pieces of **** like you for breakfast.” So... why had Katrina been spared? Had that pointless rant actually got through to the mini Franziska? Finally back to three. Water. Katrina had developed a somewhat fear of water over the past few years, mainly because of her power and not being able to defend herself with power but mainly due to the fact she couldn’t swim. Her mother had taken her to classes when she was little, probably when she was still in England but her stubbornness and fear of the idea of the big blue wet thing never clicked with Katrina. It was a stupid thing, she knew that but she shuddered at the thought of being in something she couldn’t stand in at least. The thought had occurred because she could feel water on her face, and she couldn’t figure out why. Surely it didn’t rain in Texas. Texas was known for it’s blistering heat waves. Even thought it was in the middle of December, surely it didn’t rain...

Katrina bit down on her tongue even harder as the rain came down even heavier, realizing that there were several cuts on her face as the water stung against them. She was hoping to god that Effy wasn’t still around, otherwise she was really going to get the shock of her life. Soon enough, Katrina’s day just worsened as she heard the dampened voice of her rival. “Look, maybe you didn’t hear me properly.” Was that Katrina she was talking to, or someone else? The words rung in her head, despite the electric current still present in her body. “You can tell I’m mad, right? Want all of those bolts of lighting to land on your head? No? Good. Then bugger off.” Katrina could only guess it was someone else because there was the crack on the ground of a lightning bolt hit and it wasn’t aimed at Katrina. Poor guy... whoever had crossed Effy really didn’t know what to expect. It was hard for Katrina not to flinch but she managed to pull it off, maybe the two years of drama and acting classes with Effy had paid off.

She had never been knocked unconscious by a electric bolt before, but the feeling was familiar from the park incident all those years ago, which had been her last dealing with Elizabeth Taylor. The park had been absolutely destroyed and the last time Katrina had visited, there was grass everywhere to cover the tracks and trails that the girls had made during their fight off. Both of them had been left with scars, Effy with limbs, facial burns and many more injuries and Katrina. She had been the one that was better off because of her power. Being pyrokinetic gave her a certain resistance to burning of most kinds, including electrical ones. Ice, not so much. Lana, her guardian had placed her in hospital, just to check that everything was okay with Katrina even though she didn’t need the millions of medical examinations and prodding at whilst there. If only she had coffee grenaded Effy instead of burning half her arm off... Maybe if Katrina had never even spoken of her ability to create and manipulate fire then, perhaps everything would be normal although Effy would have figured it out sooner or later. She wasn’t stupid.

Still on the ground, Katrina kept her eyes closed as she listened out for any other sounds around her. Maybe she was imagining it, but there was the soft thud of footsteps, edging nearer towards Katrina by the second, before they stopped. Was it Effy, or someone else? Not daring to move, Katrina with her body limp used her ear not against the floor’s surface to try and figure out what she was doing. There was the sound of the rain, which was dampening Katrina each second that passed, a slight breeze in the wind and the sound of Effy’s breathing. Nothing that gave her any clue of how to act. Nothing at all. Zilch. Kaboom. The silence was the same for the next few moments, where Katrina contemplated on getting up and screaming at her if her voice was in working order, or even punch her to serve her right and that depended on whether she could gather up the strength to even hit Effy at this point.

Unfortunately, the silence was stopped by a sudden half scream, half yell of emotions from Effy. If they weren’t mortal enemies, Katrina would have felt sorry for her. Actually, she corrected that in her mind as she would never feel sorry for Effy again as a driving force slammed into Katrina’s chest and she heard as snap as her eyes shot wide open. The pain was even worse than her arm and she guessed that Effy had just broken several of her ribs. Katrina let out a yell of pain, trying to stand up but Effy’s shoe dug into her side before she could. She yelled out again, the stinging pain bringing tears to Katrina’s eyes. “Get up, Katrina. You owe me.” I owe you? Okay, I get the fact that you didn’t kill me but there was no need to shatter the majority of my ribs...

Somehow, Katrina found herself standing up, almost stumbling half the way and she glared at Effy as she made some distance between the two of them. Her vision was still slightly blurred but the figure of Effy was generally the same. She could see the facial burns that Katrina had caused, yet again to Effy’s pale skin which almost matched her own. Parts of her clothes were singed by the flames she had sent at Effy god knew how long ago and the rain was falling so heavily now that Effy’s hair was plastered to her head in a scarlet paste. Compared to Effy, Katrina must look a mess. The first thing she had to do if she even managed to escape this situation was find some sort of doctor or hospital so she could fix herself up.

Katrina had no thought of repaying Effy, unless it counted in not throwing another nine thousand flames at her but that was because of the rain that was soaking herself and her clothes. At least she left her iPod back at the motel, however her phone would need some repairing. Effy had probably shocked it’s system into the next dimension. Her head was still buzzing and there was a strange taste in her mouth. Raising one hand to her mouth, she looked at her hand and much to her dislike, saw a red liquid trickling down her skin. Oh god. Blood. That was another thing Katrina was not good with. They had been doing blood testing in Biology once and Katrina had literally ran out of the room the second the teacher mentioned anything and before anyone started. Seeing on her own hand however, Katrina gulped but that was a big mistake. She coughed up the remainder that was in her throat and mouth, doubling over so that it landed on the floor instead of herself. After coughing up her insides, Katrina looked up at Effy with a glare of pure hatred. If her hair had the reddish tinge it did when she was using her ability, Katrina had the strange idea she looked like Dahlia Hawthorne, without the lace umbrella.

“Owe you?” Katrina said, with a hint of sarcasm somehow blended in. “If I owe you so much, then kill me now.” It was partly a threat, but she did mean it somehow. If Katrina did indeed owe Effy for sparing her life, then Effy should just simply end it. The sixteen year old was on the verge of snapping and it was going to happen anytime soon. “You’re the one that started this. You and your electrokinesis taking over the whole school, murdering innocent people for your pleasure!” She wasn’t letting her anger out, not just yet. “Monsters aren’t born, Elizabeth. They’re created. Is that what I owe you? For letting my best friend go off the wall? Is it?” Katrina’s voice volume was slowly being turned up and sure enough...

“Come on! Just hit me, Effy!” Katrina yelled, her voice slightly hoarse. “Get it over and done with!” There was a spark running down Katrina’s right arm, the one that wasn’t broken and before she could control it, a blue flame sprung from the centre of her palm and it flew straight past Effy’s shoulder. As this happened, the irises of her eyes went from the deep brown to the brilliant red and flicked from that hue to a blue like Effy’s before they faded back. Katrina, not sure of what she had just done stepped back a few steps in shock. Katrina couldn’t use fire in any type of water, let alone a storm this bad. Was her power developing again? The only time Katrina had seen an aqua coloured flame was with the Bunsen Burner at school, and Katrina in her state of broken bones, half cut face and bleeding insides couldn’t produce something as powerful as that. Could she? Katrina, looking at Effy shouted at her again. “One last fight to end it all, Effy.”
