it is december. the aftermath of the bomb (or exploding man, depending how 'in the know' you are) has started to dawn on the citizens of new york, and clean-up work has just begun.

very cold. in most places, the temperature is below zero degrees. snow lies everywhere, and gets thicker and thicker with every day, and harsh winds make the winter even colder.

a memorial service is being held in three weeks to remember all of the unfortunate heroes that lost their lives to the bomb blast killing over half the population of new york. will any heroes or villains make an appearance?

Alex was sitting in his room, earphones in place, turned up loud. The sound of "Time To Pretend," by MGMT drowned out the screaming inside his head. Alex had a notebook in one hand, and a pen in the other. Alex chewed on his lip, and tried to write. But nothing seemed to work out. He scribbled out his last line, and erased a line in the first. The words just wouldn't come tonight. It was almost midnight, Alex knew his father would come home soon. As soon as this thought entered his head, a door slammed and the house shook. Alex put down his notebook, and braced himself.

The door to Alex's room crashed open, and in entered Alex's father. His hair had grown long, and was greasy. Stubble grew on an ever-fattening face, and his eyes were bloodshot. Alcohol hung on his breath like a cloud. Alex felt himself shivering, and it was June. "Did I tell you to stay up this late?" Alex's father's voice was harsh and hoarse. Alex shook his head, looking down. He was thirteen, if he wanted to stay up until one AM, he should be allowed to. "Then why the F**K where you up?" With that the first blow hit Alex's face. Alex didn't fall. but he felt his eyes watering. Stay strong, he told himself.

"I'm sorry," Alex muttered. He knew it wouldn't do anything, but he wanted to try. Like every night, Alex's father ignored his apologies. The second and third blows connected with Alex's ribs and stomach. Alex fell over, and struggled to breath. A kick to Alex's face started the blood flowing. After that, Alex lost count of the attacks, they all blended together, until he almost passed out from the pain. The anger on his father's face brought fear into Alex's heart. One more blow would do it, he'd be out. As soon as the fist was about to connect--

Alex jolted up, letting out a yell. His alarm clock beeped, and he ran a hand through his hair. Another dream, like almost ever other night. Alex buried his face in his hands, before pulling the covers off his bed. He got out of bed, and began his regular routine- brushing his hair, turing on the straightener, putting on a little bit of eyeliner while he waited for the straightener to heat up, straightening his hair, eating a bowl of cereal, finding his tightest pair of jeans, putting them on, finding a shirt, grabbing his bag, and leaving for school.

As soon as he entered the school, he looked around for Sunny. Sunny was his best, and only, friend. They had become close when they were around thirteen, and had been insepreable ever since. She was a year younger, but that didn't stop them. Alex almost dated her, but didn't when he discovered that he didn't like girls in that way. She was the only one who knew about everything: the fact that his father used to abuse him, his father's death, and his power. She was also the only person close to him he'd never used his power on. Alex found his power so confusing. He couldn't look down the halls without seeing pools of swirling colour, flashing and twirling brightly. It often gave him a headache.

Like him, Sunny had a power, flight. Alex often wished he had Sunny's power, not his. Sunny's probably didn't involve her seeing bright auras. He also longed to be able to soar into the sky, and go where he wanted. It would be awfully handy.

When Alex didn't immediately see Sunny, he walked to his locker, and pulled out his books, hoping he'd see her soon.

Shoot! Monday morning, already she was late! This was not a good start to her week. Sunny let air hiss through her teeth as she resorted to pulling clothes out of her dresser drawers and tossing them everywhere in her room. She hadn’t been able to find her favourite white sweater, and she was getting really pissed off. Laura had suggested the ‘retrace your steps’ method, but it hadn’t worked. She’d come home the night before with her sweater still on, and taken it off in her room. She had been desperate to talk to Alex--she had news--but she hadn’t been able to get ahold of him.

Her ‘news’ was that she had met another special person, just like them, while she was in New York! She had left Odessa a day later than usual because some girl from school had wanted to hang out and Laura encouraged Sunny to go. Sunny would do pretty much anything for Laura or Alex. Since her parents had died, they were the only two that she had left. Well, the only two who really mattered. For a while she’d had a crush on Alex, but he was gay. That had disappointed her for a while, but they had quickly become best friends. Sunny loved him, but like a brother. Or perhaps it would be better to say that she loved him, but was not romantically interested in him. Brothers and sisters were usually intentionally cruel to each other. Sunny wouldn’t hurt Alex.

When she finally was down to the second last drawer of her dresser, she found a sweater. It was not the one she had been looking for, and she glared at it. Damn it! Her blue-green eyes were narrowed into a harsh gaze, and she imagined it curling up into a corner, cowering. Sunny could be scary when she was angry.

Sunny quickly threw on the black, white and silver sweater, not stopping to zip up the front. She didn’t usually like wearing black sweaters with black skinny jeans, but if she couldn’t find her white hoodie . . . Ah, well, at least her shirt was white and gold, not black as well. The bottom of her shirt extended under the edge of the hoodie a bit, and Sunny quickly grabbed a hair tie from her dresser. She was going to have to fly to school--again--if she didn’t want to be late. Again.

She stepped lightly out of her bedroom, glancing down the hall to Laura’s door. Good thing her guardian was still asleep. Sunny ran to the kitchen and took one look at her breakfast options before rolling her eyes and going out to the back porch. They really needed to get some better ‘on the go’ breakfast foods. Granola bars or something? She would have to put that on the grocery list.

Sunny didn’t even stop as she bolted outside and jumped. Mid-air she started flying, taking off at full speed for her school. She didn’t particularly want to fly too high, but that was okay. No one looked up. Well, Alex did sometimes, but that was only when he was on the lookout for Sunny. The air whipped around her golden hair, and she felt annoyance grow again. It was a good thing that the school (and her locker) had mirrors.

After a short flight, she reached her school. She had learned that there was a door on the roof that, if she followed a certain route, led straight to the hall with Alex’s locker. Her landing was graceful--she’d had a few crashes when she first started flying--and she ran straight to the door. A staircase or two later, and she found herself walking straight into the hallways of her school. Alex was always worried that someone would catch her while coming down from the roof, but Sunny laughed it off. She was fine, she always was.

It didn’t take her long to locate her best friend. He was standing at his locker, pulling out books and Sunny ran up to his locker. She leaned her back against the one next to his, and grinned. “Morning!” she happily chirped. “Guess what? I had an interesting weekend! And a question,” Sunny wanted to ask if Alex would be willing to try letting her fly with him. As in, she carry him. After her most recent trip to New York, where she met another special person (which was what she so desperately wanted to tell him about) she wanted to take Alex. Badly. And maybe they could even go to London, she could show him where she spent the first twelve years of her life.

She sighed a bit as she remembered how windblown her hair must look. “Ah, crap,” she muttered as she started combing her fingers through the blonde waves. “Gotta go fix this,” she rolled her eyes. Stupid wind.

Running footsteps were common in Alex's school, but Alex could pick out which ones were Sunny. She bounded over to him, excitement in her eyes. She was swirling with colour, lots of it too. Lots of yellow, lots of purple, like always, and that little tint of orange that she always had when she looked at him. Alex smiled, which was saying a lot for him. Sunny was one of the few people who made him smile just by being there, and being herself. "Morning!," She collapsed onto the locker beside his. From her breathlessness and wind-swept hair, he could tell she had flown to school. "Guess what? I had an interesting weekend! And a question." Sunny's bubbly attitude contrasted with his, but still they stuck together. Opposites attract, isn't that what they say? "Oh crap, gotta go fix this?" she started to comb through her hair.

"Good morning to you too," Alex said, and he pulled a magnetic mirror off the side of his locker, and held it out to Sunny. He himself move towards her, and started to fix her hair also. "There, it's fine!" he smiled. It did look good. His hair always looked like it had been through a blender, so he rarely needed the mirror. Except for his makeup. Yes he's a guy and he wears makeup. Call him gay all you want, because he is, so it isn't really an insult. "So, what was your question?" Alex tilted his head. He didn't sound curious, really, but he was. He never really sounded like anything. Emotion generally stayed away from his voice, as if there was a giant, BEWARE OF DOG, or in Alex's case, BEWARE OF EMO KID sign.

A lot of other things seemed to stay away from Alex too. Romance. Love. All those kinds of things. The only person who looked at him with a swirl of purple was Sunny. And if Alex could see his own colours, he'd be pretty sure that they were mixed with purple too. Occasionally he got a few closet cases looking at him with red, meaning they were either angry or lustful, most likely lustful, and one or two girls with a bit of orange curiosity. He even got a few grays-pity. But he didn't really understand why; he was happy enough. To an extent.
