The Lovegoods, Mr, Mrs, & Luna: the family dynamic

I think it's about time we discuss the Lovegoods.

Some discussion points:

• What do you think the Lovegoods' lives were like before Mrs. Lovegood died?
• What was Mr. & Mrs. Lovegoods' marriage like?
• How did Luna's parents treat her before her mother died?
• How does her father treat her now?
• Did Mrs. Lovegood believe in Crumple Horned Snorkacks, Blibbering Humdingers, etc.?
• Did both Luna's parents work before her mother died? Were they paying jobs?
• As the editor of The Quibbler, how much do you think Mr. Lovegood makes?
• Was creating spells a hobby, or occupation for Mrs. Lovegood?
• What was the general feel of the Lovegood home? What would it be like now?
• Do you think that Luna and her father have moved since her mother died?
• If they live in the same house, how would Luna and her father react to the places (like a study or bedroom) that she frequented?
• What happened to Mrs. Lovegood's wand? What happened to her other posessions?
• Wouldn't you love to know their first names so you would be able to stop calling them Mr. & Mrs. Lovegood?

That's alot to think about. And since i'm in a good mood and have lots of time, i think i'll take a go at it.

Mrs. Lovegood:
There is just so much that can happen with Mrs. Lovegood. We have practically nothing to go on. Only that she died and that a spell went wrong and killed her when Luna was young. Now, many fanficers have written a multitude of Mrs. Lovegoods. I would say that if i was to write her, i'd say she was not like the way Luna is portrayed in the books. I imagine her almost like Hermione. Studious, really into books and magic. Yet, she'd be fun loving, imaginative, always smiling. I would imagine her going along with any of the silly things a child-like Luna would come up with. (tho i still think Luna acts incredibly child-like. But i mean, can you imagine a 7 year old Luna running around in a field of wild flowers, making up stories of imaginary creatures, and having Mrs. Lovegood there too smiling and enlightening little Luna by pretending to agree--- how cute! ). But moving on. Also, i'd say she worked with magic. I dont think she was just experimenting for a hobby. Maybe she was going a little out of stature of what she was supposed to be doing for the specific job, but i think the spell that killed her was part of her job. She'd be similar to Luna in looks maybe. Same long, straggly dirty-blonde hair. But i dont think she'd have Luna's eyes. And of course she'd be beautiful. Actually, because she's pure-blood (removed from the family tree of course) she'd have the features of the pureblood--beautiful in an aristocratic way...but with softer eyes...and because she's always smiling, she'd be even prettier than the purebloods. Anway, she'd be very intelligent, and powerful. And she was in love with Mr. Lovegood.

Mr. Lovegood:
Well, we know he's the editor of the Quibbler, but that's about it. He might actually believe in half the things he publishes in his paper. And I do think I would write him that way too. I mean, its not like Luna's in a made up/looney world all by herself. She must have support from somewhere. I think Mr. Lovegood would be pretty 'looney' himself *laughs*. Maybe its a way to deal with his wife's death, but I think him and Luna enjoy their slightly out-of-this-realm view of things. He'd be tall and lanky. OK on the eyes, not necessarily homely or ugly. Just...OK. He would be his wife's compliment (when she was alive). He'd be able to make her keep smiling and not get too sucked up into her work (since she was so studious and curious) and they would absolutely adore Luna. Their homelife, on an overall would be good. Comfortable, loving, and fun. Oh, and before his wife died, he still worked with the paper, but at a lower position than editor. Oh, and he doesnt make that money with the Quibbler, but he doesnt mind too much.


Eh, anything else i can say?

Little Luna (before age 9):
Luna was pretty much like any other child. She probably had an overactive imagination but it wasnt abnormal. I think she really truly believe in all the made up creatures she used to invent, and so with the death of her mother and her almost being stuck in that child-like mentality, its easier to believe things of...odd natures.

Hm, actually that's all i have to say on that. I guess i'm done. *laughs*, i almost want to write a Lovegood story now.

To Mr Lovegood's name, my friend Celia and myself have found ourselves refering him as Elliot. I'm not sure how exactly we started calling him Elliot, but he said it one day and it has stuck ever since.

I also think that creating spells was Mrs. Lovegoods profession. Maybe she wasn't getting paid for the actual creation of the spell, but perchance, she was writing up the background and history of the spell, how it worked, how you needed to cast it, etc.

I also think that some of the spell that she was working on while she died bounced and hit Luna since she saw her mother die. Just a running fancy that I have with the mother dying scene.

I like the idea of Mrs Lovegood making up spells for a living. Makes sense to me.

I'm a bit confused by the last bit though. What do you mean by the spell hitting Luna? What did you think that did to her?

In my way of Luna seeing her mum die, I just believe that maybe a bit of magical fall out hit her. I think that is the best way I'm going to be able to explain it, but, I think that Luna might have been hit with a remnant of the spell.

What sort of activities/habits do you think Luna (and her family) may engage in that might set them further apart from the crowd than what we already know?

• Not waving a pure-blood flag (They are purebloods, because Luna was able to go to Hogwarts for her 6th year along with Ginny)?
• Shopping at... interesting locales?
• Mixing with Muggles, visting Muggle areas
• Where they live, including location, the house itself, and decor
• Clothing choices
