It wasn't exactly what he'd expected.

Though, to be honest, he hadn't really known what he expected. What could you expect when the person you'd initiated a physical relationship with got you fired for illicit pharmaceutical experimentation? For that matter, he hadn't really know what the hell he was doing when he sent the man a package, either, a stupid little 'hey, I'm not dead' gift.

Silas hadn't expected to get a call a few months later from Jin, asking him out to dinner. That was something.

If he were less nervous about it, he would have been irked. He hadn't seen Jin in months, didn't know if this was supposed to be an actual date, an attempted revival of their previous (and largely physical) relationship, or just a 'checking up' kind of situation, and to top it all off:

He didn't.

Have.

A.

Fucking.

Thing.

To wear.

So instead of being irked, when the time came around for Jin to show up, Silas was still rifling through his closet, throwing things on the bed, on the floor, and still only wearing his pants.

Pants were easy to pick out.

Jin Kim thought everyone should play by a certain set of rules. At times, he could bend those rules himself, but for general intents and purposes, he did not embrace loopholes or defiance. More than anything else, he was against sticking out his own neck for someone else, and thus, after a modicum of hand wringing, off Silas Alderin had gone.

Now Jin had come back for him, in a manner of speaking.

He was a man who claimed things were what they were, without gunning for labels or perimeters: rules meant having to play fair, when he wasn't ready to buckle down for any kind of game. So it was a nothing date, so far, with 'Let's get dinner, I'll pick you up,' and a lot of loud knocking while Silas was distracted with his shirt-hunting.

At least he'd left the door open.

"Can't find a good dress, Cinderella?" One moment, there was no one; the next, Jin was leaning against the doorframe, wearing a maroon pullover sweater and slimming dark slacks; his hair was a little longer, his shoes were pointed and shiny. He looked good, like the world was going his way, because it was supposed to.

That was one of the rules.

Silas leaned out of his closet with a scowl on his face, eyeing Jin up and down as if judging his expectations by his own dress. "I wouldn't have a problem if you'd said anything about where we were going," he replied, forgoing the closet for his dresser.

Silas wasn't exactly the clean-cut image of your general everyday doctor; he worked out regularly (almost obsessively so), and had a fair number of tattoos. Since Jin had last seen him, he'd added to his collection, and a true collection it had become -- sleeves covered one of his arms and half of the other, bright in color and design, and he'd obtained a little sparrow on his hip, barely visible above his belt.

The sleeves he covered easily with a black v-neck, then rifled his fingers through his hair, throwing Jin a sideways look and a crooked smirk.

"I like your hair like that."

"Make an assessment!" he ordered cheerfully. He was not the least put-off by Silas's expression; in fact, he was quickly becoming distracted with the doctor's state of undress. 'Mostly physical' really was the best descriptor of their former relationship, and Silas had had some pretty choice words for Jin about it.

"Thanks. Also, that sweater makes you look fat." If there was fat on Silas's body, Jin would probably need to go hunting for it, but he'd gamble on getting Silas to wear something more interesting. And take his shirt off again.

"It does not!" Silas grumbled, rifling his hair again as he turned back to the mirror. He frowned, twisted his mouth in thought, and let out an exasperated sigh, rolling his eyes as he abandoned the mirror, stripped off the shirt, and tossed it on the bed.

He disappeared into the closet again and came out in the process of working on the closures of a dark blue pinstripe button-up, cocking an eyebrow expectantly at Jin. "Better? Or do I look fat in this one too?"

There was a certain level of threat under the sarcasm -- or if not threat, then challenge -- that was echoed in his eyes. Call me fat again. I dare you.

Interesting how easy it was to pick up where one had left offf.

When Silas went into the closet, Jin was leaning against the door. When Silas came out of the closet, Jin had teleported several feet closer, so that he could step forwards and smooth down the other man's shirt.

"It all makes you look fat," he assured melodiously. "It's quite a quandary."

In a time almost forgotten, Jin had told Silas that he had never lied to him, that he had never tried to sell him false hopes or bad dreams. It was a statement that probably didn't extend to white lies, like the one he was telling now. He reminded himself sternly that he had respectable dinner reservations, and that a first meeting after a 'break' should involve no pressure, but the old habits were already there, waiting to be picked up. It would be so easy.

Something flickered in Silas's eyes for the briefest moment. Maybe Jin had never tried to sell him false hopes, but that didn't mean he didn't have them. He hadn't known what to expect. But maybe somewhere in him he had hoped.

At times, hope equated to nothing more than unrealistic expectations.

The look was gone in a blink and he was instead taking in a long, low breath, chest rising and falling under Jin's hands, lids heavy. When he spoke it was laced with suggestion, head tilted down just close enough for Jin to look up and close the distance.

"Why don't you come fix this quandary then?" he murmured back, tangling a hand in Jin's shirt and tugging him backward into the closet. "Since you know so much about everything."

Jin was guilty of deception by omission, when he knew that Silas was the type to want something more, and want it fast, and he had simply held up his hands and asserted, 'I'll think about it.' Even this was nothing more than an offer of a free dinner, with no implication that anything else would come with it, or after, and Silas had to hold himself responsible for projecting into it. But Jin knew. He knew, and didn't stop it.

But he also behaved himself with the buttons, polishing them off and then simply ironing out the wrinkles with his hands, and if either of them had had a bit more willpower, they might have headed to the door, as they were about to run late. But dinner just didn't seem as important anymore, not with Silas pulling him into the closet. His arms looped around the doctor's neck so smoothly it could have been reflex, and Jin murmured into his lips, "I know what I know." And then he kissed Silas, and it was as good as he remembered it, and probably as troublesome.

Silas was just as guilty of inaction despite knowing. They had that in common, if nothing else. Stupidity in hand with whatever desire there was between them. There were a thousand ways to explain it, but none mattered. Jin didn't act. Neither would he.

Except to kiss him back, one hand slipping around Jin's waist and pulling him in while the other held on to the rod from which Silas's clothes hung. It was good. It had never really not been good. Just...complicated.

Or perhaps too brutally simple.

"So," he murmured against Jin's mouth, "this one gonna work for you?"

"Maybe." The word was delayed by kissing and sighs. It hadn't been this easy for them, back then, not when Silas's misbehavior had been looming over them. Gratitude or misguided need or screwed-up attraction: whatever had made Silas take the few extra steps, he'd needed it to overcome the initial resistance. There was no resistance now, no jobs, no amount of professionalism to recall or ignore. Jin was a free man, and he could kiss whomever he wanted in whatever closet.

"I'll -- think about it." But he was undoing the buttons. The dinner reservations could go to hell.

"I am kinda hungry," Silas breathed back, staking a claim on Jin's mouth that made it more than obvious he was not actually referring to dinner. Both hands slid down his sides to grip his thighs and Silas hoisted him up off the floor before his neck kinked from bending down. Jin was small in comparison, softer, lighter...easily taken up and pressed into the back wall.

The first time had been in a closet, Silas couldn't help but remember. At work, no less. Now they didn't have to be in a closet, did they? But this wasn't some bare assigned room on a ship. This was his home. His bedroom. His bed. Whatever they had been before, it had not been this intimate.

Silas pressed into him harder, fingers wrapping in his hair, holding him still as he pulled back to actually look at Jin full on, panting. "Bed...?"

Easy to press up against all kinds of walls - closet walls, doors, office walls. Easy to corner physically. Easy to grab. It was never hard to reach out and touch him; it was the inner distance that was harder to shrink.

He wasn't really thinking about intimacy, not right then - he would think about it later, afterwards, when he was lying there and he couldn't just get dressed and slither away, because 'he had work in the morning'. Silas got the necessary "Mmm'hmm" while Jin was undoing his buttons, and nothing further. There were ways to show Silas he had been missed, as opposed to telling him about it across a table.

The problem with Silas was he never took actions at face value. He had to hear it. He had to be told no, to be told yes, to be told I like you or I missed you, or alternatively, I don't want you, go away. People were deceptive, willfully or unknowingly. It was easier to know what someone meant by what they said and the way they said it and the look in their eyes.

It meant something when someone wanted to talk to you. Sex, to some people, was just sex.

And running on prior example, as he was, Silas could (or would not allow himself to) assume no more from this encounter than he had from any other with Jin, despite the circumstances.

So he pressed him into the wall, into the floor, into the sheets, until exhaustion and biological limitation had him sprawled naked on the bed over the mess of his clothes and the tangle of sheets, slowly but surely catching his breath.

And then, in silent declaration, he hooked an arm around Jin's waist. Tightly.

Sometimes people learned from their mistakes. Sometimes, it took a lot of mistakes to learn, just once.

Jin was insistent, as he always had been; he made Silas work for his happy ending. But there had to come an ending, and following the ending, an epilogue, where he was lying there, actually hungry, and thinking about the dinner reservations they had abandoned. It wasn't that he felt like getting up and going somewhere - far from it - but they had failed quite grandly at starting over, at least in a more mature fashion.

He set his chin into Silas's shoulder and murmured, "Now you're going to have to cook for me."

Silas groaned as if that was positively the most exhausting prospect ever, and then he rolled over on top of Jin, nuzzling into his neck and grumbling nonsense.

His stomach echoed him. Silas sighed then shifted to get more comfortable, pushing himself up and kissing Jin repeatedly in a lazy fashion. "What -- mmh -- do you want?"
