Nothing felt better than having Julia Brayden want him. Seriously want him. The girl he was crazy about actually equivocally returning the fast-paced chase… Who had ever heard of that? He must be the luckiest man in the world. A two years’ absence truly made the heart grow fonder, not to mention desperately clingy. Mentally, he cleaved to the young woman beside him, pondering with apparent, nervous anticipation how to go about solidifying their bond- his confidence was by character high, but he wanted to be everything she wanted. It wasn’t a matter of self-consciousness. He needed Lia’s satisfaction at the night’s events, he craved her happiness. A small, sheepish grin tugged at the corner of his lips, which were still burning from earlier contact. If given the chance he probably would have set the seats back and well…had his way with her there, but he strongly protested against such crude, quick, adolescent methods. No, he had to be romantic.

He did not mind wooing her. It was the waiting that got on his nerves. With just a glance, she knew how to captivate him mind, body, and heck, for the romantics out there, soul- desire, love, commitment, they were all present in her light brown iris. She was torturing him when she did that. Looked at him that way. Touched him this way. Even the most subtle movement had his hairs on end, and the more she even breathed the shorter his patience got. There were goosebumps on his hand he tried to dismiss from where she had kissed him. To make the time go by faster, he focused his attention on the road, a difficult task in itself, one hand on the steering wheel and the other gently squeezing Lia’s palm.

She had him stumbling about like an ‘amateur’, as if he’d never been kissed in his entire life. Though the road before him was plain, old gravel lit up by slightly fogged headlights, he could easily keep his eyes on it by picturing his love, her glowing skin, what she looked like underneath her clothes. Not the most careful driver at this time. He was clearly over the speed limit, always switching lanes to pass slower, more leisurely vehicles, and dodging longer routes at all costs. She hadn’t been to his house either. That would be something new to talk about. It was just about right for someone his age, in a relatively new, quiet neighborhood out of the way of things, a suburban threshold full of sleepy families with young children who crowded the streets to play after school. He thought it would be a good place to raise a family, and so, the quaint three bedroom home was his.

As they entered the neighborhood, Shadow allowed himself to steal a glance at his beautiful girlfriend; a nervous, happy tension in his throat preventing him from articulating exactly what he felt. He wanted to tell her she was beautiful. She was amazing and he never wanted to lose her again. He would do anything for her. Instead, the look in his soft, hazel eyes portrayed all of this and more, bearing into her own with such force and focus one would either think he was about to kill her or he was madly in love. Shadow eased up on the accelerator for the sake of his neighbors, taking a few turns further into the subdivision before stopping at the end of the street with two large oak trees. The lawn was well-kept but devoid of any other sort of foliage or gardening save for what all of the homes came with, a few thick, green bushes in the front window.

The moon had already risen to replace the sun, and it was deep enough into night that the pearly white glow had descended upon the earth, bathing everything in an ethereal slumber. It was quiet, the street was absent of any lights save for a few porches, and a few stars could be seen. He wasted little time from the moment he pulled into the driveway. Trying to be casual about it, he coordinated his every moment, making sure he didn’t have to fumble around for his keys when they got to the door, and leading Lia by hand into the living room. The home was comfortable and nicely furnished, and surprisingly clean for a man of his age. The white-washed walls aside, everything from the microfiber couch to the dining room table had a sort of dark color-scheme about it. The table legs were black and the top was glass, a modern feel. The only thing that stood out was a wall of photos in the kitchen; primarily of family, and some friends, not to exclude a few of Lia from two years back. Shadow shrugged his shoulders, gesturing a tour of the place,
“Well, this is it,” he spoke in a soft, low tone, almost a whisper, as if there were people there sleeping. The bashful smile was still there, unable to be erased. Closing the distance between them, he gently removed his hand from her grasp, and placed them on both sides of her hips, pressing his forehead against hers. He had a hopeful look about him, gazing into her eyes one last time before he took a deep breath and closed the distance between their lips, slyly gliding his tongue over the inside of her mouth.
