a new world the biggest brother . The United Kingdom that we know of is no more. Laws and regulations have taken over so that the state controls the lives of every citizen. Everyone is expected to know about these laws. If you have any questions, please contact a member of staff. It may sound complicated, but it’s simple as soon as you get the hang of it! To keep control of the population, all pregnancies must be registered. Sex outside of marriage is illegal. If a married couple want to have children, as soon as the wife becomes pregnant, she must inform government officials. When the child is born, they must be registered with a birth certificate and so the government keeps a permanent eye on them, so the tests can begin the day after the child’s first birthday. [[all characters under the age of 16 are considered npc's that can be played by the parents]] The government doesn’t trust its citizens to make any real choices for themselves. From the age of five, children are subjected to tests twice a year. One test is a general personality test, whilst the other test is to keep an eye on intelligence. If a child is too ill to take a test, the test is suspended for a week. There is no other reason allowed for a child to miss a test, and if they do, both parents would be imprisoned for six months. The tests are designed to keep an eye on a child’s development. All of the data collected is analysed, so at the age of sixteen, the child will be sent a letter. This letter officially states who their state-chosen spouse is, as well as their state-chosen occupation. If the child or their parents think that the test results are completely wrong, they may appeal the decision once. However, no appeal has ever changed the original decision. Once the sixteen-year-old has been told what their occupation is, they must continue their education until the age of eighteen. Those with menial occupations begin their work the day after their eighteenth birthday. Those with other occupations then go on to college or university to train for their field. They don’t have any choice in the matter. In the letters, both the young man and woman are given their chosen spouses’ contact details. So they both have enough time to either start jobs or finish their education, the government states that they must marry before either of the couple reach twenty-four years of age. If one of them goes missing, the other must report it to a government official, so they are not blamed, and then can be paired with someone else. Marriage is serious, and couples are expected to have at least one child. If they don’t get pregnant by the age of forty, they must adopt. This is to ensure that everyone has a family life.
It is illegal to divorce or commit adultery. Adulterers are faced with stiff prison sentences. It is illegal to abandon your husband, wife or children. So-called ‘family values’ are extremely important to government’s perfect society. Homosexuality is seen as a mental illness, and is treated as such. If someone admits to homosexual urges, they will be committed to a psychiatric hospital until they are ‘treated’ and ‘cured’. If someone commits homosexual acts, then they face the death penalty. This is the same for serial adulterers or abandoners.
Those that refuse to do the work assigned to them by government are also put to death. Anyone caught taking part in work that hasn’t been assigned to them is also threatened with death, as the government believes that, unless it is an extreme emergency, it is immoral. This is lethal injection, carried out on the premises of Scotland Yard, performed by trained physicians, nicknamed the Death Doctors. Cash and coins as we know it are long gone. Instead, to make everything fair, everyone is given their own card, with credits added to it on the first of every month. For those under the age of sixteen, their credits are split in half and given to their parents. Everyone is given the same amount of credits, whether they are a doctor, a lawyer or a road sweeper. However, it’s strange how politicians and their friends always seem to have more than everyone else. All top politicians live on or beside Downing Street, in Westminster. Those with stressful occupations, such as doctors, engineers and the like are given places in the typically wealthy Belgravia, where the homes are large and spacious. Receptionists, teachers and others that would be considered more middle class are placed into smaller houses, then the menial workers are given small apartments or studio flats, dotted around the city. Like everything else, these homes are assigned by the government. A citizen is always given the best chance to work and provide for the state. A deaf person is given hearing aids and those around them are given free sign language lessons. The blind are provided with guide dogs and their work transcribed into Braille. If a physical disability stops an individual from working, then the state gives them credits for free, like modern benefits. However, cheats to the system are automatically given the death penalty. To make sure there is no fraud, there are random checks on the individual to make sure that their disability hasn’t suddenly ‘disappeared’.
