Vampires and humans typically didn’t mix. Why? Well, humans rarely even knew that the other species existed; and if they did, they often locked themselves inside at night, decorated their houses in many crucifixes and strings of garlic, and had wooden stakes carved for protection. No, vampires had learned better to reveal themselves to humans, or even to associate with the species. After all, they would eventually die. Who would want all that extra baggage of making friends and then losing them?

Well, at Ashworth, it was somewhat hard to avoid humans, but most of them just gave the new students cold shoulders and did their best to shy away from any contact with the mortal beings. Sure, it was all right to have human acquaintances, even help them if they were struggling with some school work; but that was where the relationship should stop, and most of the vampires seemed to abide by that silent golden rule.

Abel knew why he always caught grief. He knew why the others seemed to snicker as they saw him with her. At first he completely ignored them. After all, his close friends didn’t hold it against him, and that was what really mattered. But as the ‘merely acquaintance’ status molded into a friendship, he couldn’t help but let the stress get to him. He was over three hundred years old-he should know better than to get involved in human affairs. But he couldn’t bring himself to end their friendship, knowing that he would have to have a really good reason if he was to do so, and he certainly couldn’t divulge his secret. So he stuck it out, allowing the friendship to happen.

As the days went on, the remarks became ruder, and eventually even Taryn was being harped on by her friends. They teased her for always hanging out with the same guy, even though she assured them that nothing was going on between them. He was teased for having a human ‘pet’ as they liked to call it, and some of them had even made bets as to how long he’d last before he took her life, like the other humans they hunted weekly. By the end of November, the both of them were sick and tired of all the comments and the stress they were bringing.

It was sort of a ritual, to take nightly strolls through the woods and just talk. Abel was always careful as to when they went, making sure that it was only a night or two after the hunting trip, so they didn’t run the risk of running into a thirsty vampire. So they took their first walk in December, just like all their other walks had been. Although this night was different.

Everything was normal, at first; and then it all happened very fast. Apparently someone hadn’t gone on the trip, and attacked the two. Abel revealed to her what he truly was, trying to save her from the dark fate, but the other got to her first. He had almost completely drained her dry by the time Abel got him off of her, and Abel had no choice but to turn her. Taryn didn’t wake up though, and he rushed her to the nurse’s office, knowing that that was the best place for her.

Upon returning to where everything happened, Abel found one of Danny’s books; looking further, he found a ribbon that Charna was wearing that day; and he followed Christine’s scent all the way to the river. Suddenly, all three vampires had become suspects, and the matter was out of Abel’s hands.

With Taryn still in a coma, and numerous phone calls from parents of the human students, having heard about the attack, Ashworth runs the risk of exposure. And, with so many suspects, no one knows what to believe any more. Friends may become foes, foes may become friends; you best be sleeping with one eye open now in Ashworth.

I believe Luci will play the role of the concerned friend in this one.
She'll have like random spaz attacks all over the place at Abel after Taryn changes and she's in the coma. And then Luci'll be all worried about her and take the stress out on Abel.

Phew, this is gonna be FUN.
