the legend begins!
The Lion King. It is a tale of family, love, responsibility, betrayal, friendship, faith, hope, and coming of age; the very elements that we all must face in our own life adventures. But the story of the Pridelands did not end with Mufasa, Sarabi, Simba, Nala, Kiara, and Kovu. Africa's chronicle has continued on long after, with these great leaders looking on from the glittering evening stars. Africa's stories, the histories of these majestic lion prides, are still being written: here on Ulaya, the Lion King RPG.

Kulani couched low, slowly but surely creeping towards the herd of impala that were grazing in the clearing just a few yards in front of her. The copper colored female had been observing the herd all day from her spot in the tall grass, taking her time to study each animal and find the strengths and weaknesses of the herd. The impala may be small at less than half her weight, but they were tall and leggy and the rams had long, deadly horns. At this time of year there were no calves for easy pickings, and so Kulani had spent the better part of the day making sure that her choice was going to benefit her. She was meticulous. More so when she was alone and didn't have other hunters to work with. But alone, she could take all the time she wanted to make sure that she came out on top. And she always did, at least alone. When there were other lionesses hunting with her it was more of a toss up, but alone she almost always succeeded.

She was still as stone, her chest almost brushing the savanna floor as her body seemingly floated along the ground. Her movements were so precise and so subtle that although she moved, you would hardly know it. And then, just like that, she was at the edge of the tall grass that bordered the herd, one leap away from her chosen prey. Red eyes were locked on a ram nearer to the edge of the herd. There wasn't anything wrong with him, nor the rest of the herd, but she had chosen him for his behavior. As she had observed them this particular ram was less prone to looking up at his surroundings; he wasn't as aware of his safety. To Kulani, this was just enough to give her what she wanted.

Kulani made her move, and just as quickly as she did it the herd was up and running in all directions, some scattering while most stayed together. Her ram had moved last, but his legs had given him just enough spring to stay out of her grasp in her first leap, and her extended claws fell down onto the earth, pushing her along the ground and after the ram in pursuit. She stayed on his tail for long seconds, as he banked left she did as well, only waiting for the right moment to throw her front paw at his legs and trip him. She anticipated his bank to the right and was one step ahead of him, and when he finally did make his fatal turn she let her paw swipe at his back legs. The ram tumbled to the ground and Kulani had to watch herself to make sure she didn't run onto one of his horns and skewer herself.

Just as quickly as it had began, Kulani ended it with a quick bite to the back of the neck which severed his spinal chord. With blood stained lips she released the animal's neck, his head flopped to the ground with a muffled thud, the sound subdued by the grass.

Kulani turned in the direction of Pride Rock, letting out long and throaty chuffs. The deep sound would travel in the direction of her home base and any in the pride who listened would know there was a small meal waiting for them just a few miles away. While she waited she would delve into the kill herself, taking what she needed to keep up her strength but not so much that she would be selfish. She was adept at hunting and could always get something else, while she knew some in the pride truly did need the help.

Playing closely, within ear and vague eyeshot, of Kulani and her latest kill, was Amina, a lioness cub from the same pride. She had seen the impala earlier, but taking them on for a meal was currently far beyond her reach. Nowhere near the level necessary it would take to be a match, they were much heavier, taller, and faster than her at this age.

Spooked by something, the once quiet herd had ran from the cause, but, distracted by her own instinct to practice hunting prey more welcoming to her strength range, she didn't notice at first. That changed; the younger female's attention returned on them instantly when a couple of its members came sprinting and galloping toward her. Luckily, they managed to avoid crushing her, though Amina helped decrease that chance by leaping out of their paths.

With everything hushed again, she lifted her cocoa head up from the high grass blades to search around. Her curiosity about what had disturbed the group was answered by dinner calls breaking the silence. Recognizing the speaker, Amina bounded to the source.
"Hello there, Ms. Kulani," she said, in her usual manner-oriented way. Living with the same family, they had seen each other from time to time, but never were entirely alone with each other; it felt awkward. Choosing to give the adult space, Amina, with obvious difficulty, tried to tear pieces off on the unopened sides.

Kulani rose from the carcass with red stained chin and chest. Later she'd have to give herself a bath, or perhaps another lioness would be kind enough to help groom the places she couldn't reach. As of not she wasn't too worried about it, she wasn't done eating. As she took a break she looked around, seeing her first customer bounding along and towards her. The young cub must have not been too far away.

Amina greeted her with a sweet smile and polite words, and the red female smiled down at the brown cub with kind eyes. "Good evening Amina." she greeted the female in return. Kulani found it cute that the cub was so polite, where other cubs might otherwise not know their manners very well. When Amina went into the kill herself, Kulani let her body fall back to the ground and she again went back to eating. She was almost done now, and noticed that the cub was having a bit of trouble piercing the skin of the Impala.

Kulani observed the cub for a moment with a hint of amusement as she remembered when she was a cub and she too wasn't strong enough to open a carcass herself. Quietly the older female moved away from her spot and walked around to Amina, "I'm full, you can move to where I've opened it if you want." she offered in an almost motherly tone. It was instinct for a lioness to care for a cub, and this was no exception. She was her pride member, and that made her almost a daughter, even if they weren't related.

Behind the young Amina lurked another young cub. Kitara, also a brownish fluffball, followed the curious lioness. She was eager to see just what Amina was up to. After all, she was one of the only other cubs around here that didn't snub her altogether. Ever since Vivu ditched the Pridelands and Kofi ran off, she was left as the sole member of their little group.

She sighed, batting at a large stalk of grass. So much for friends. Kitara lowered her head to the ground for a brief moment, letting the realization soak in. She really didn't have all that many friends, did she? The cub pawed at the dirt beneath her paws, and kicked at a stone before continuing through the grasses. At that point, she realized that she'd lost the brown cub.

"Amina?" she called softly, swiveling her head. The heavy fall of hooves reached her ears; the cub ducked. Off to her side, a small group of impala dashed through the land, and she poked her head up cautiously. A reddish-brown lioness stared back at her, with the smallest bit of blood staining her muzzle. Hesitantly, the cub decided to approach Kulani. It wasn't as if she could stay hidden, after all. She'd already given herself away.

"Hello!" she said brightly, nodding to Amina and glancing at Kulani. "That's very bloody," she noted. If it was her kill, she wouldn't have gotten blood on anything--not even her muzzle. She wrinked up her little nose at the thought. Somehow, blood on the fur didn't appeal to her.

On her end of the hide, Amina was getting no where. The only thing her teeth were latching onto were small bouquets of stubby fur hairs, ones that stubbornly refused to remove themselves from her tongue. Top layer of skin was also hooked sometimes, but it was thin and skimpy with the portions, easily snapping with the slightest pull. Frustrated, she kept on trying anyways, because her tummy wanted food and it would get what it wanted.

Not to long into the cub's valiant efforts, observant Kulani was kind enough to offer the struggling youngster her already pierced section.
"Well," Amina answered, feeling badly for intruding on someone else's territory, "If you're sure." Climbing to the part with revealed internal structure, she passed under the adult; her tail accidentally brushed the lioness' stomach.
"Thank you!" she exclaimed, gratefully. With that, Amina started munching and chomping on what was left.

Hearing Kitara's entrance, she stopped and greeted her back, with a messy and semi-full mouth.
"Hi Kifara. Come feat!," was hopefully decipherable, "Ms. Kulani hufted for us." She had no idea that the other female cub had been following her. If she did, she would have warned her about the impala stampeding and wouldn't have left her behind like that.

The young Amina seemed timid, yet grateful. Kulani smiled kindly, nudging her towards the opened spot in the carcass as the cub walked between her front legs. "You're very welcome," Kulani said quietly, pleased with the cub's manners.

A quiet voice then came in from the close distance and Kulani looked up to see Kitara, another of the pride's cubs. "Hello Kitara." she greeted the cub as she walked closer, who was seemingly less shy than Amina. Kitara was a bit unusual about the kill, not liking the sight of the blood. This was strange for a lion, while it wasn't for some other creatures. Kulani didn't think much of it though, perhaps Kitara would grow out of it with age. She remembered when she was young she used to be afraid of bees, but now she was not. "I guess it is a lot of blood, but that's what happens when you hunt." she said, trying to justify it. There wasn't really a way to eat all that cleanly.

Kulani moved away from her place over Amina, walking over to a soft spot of grass close to the carcass and laying down to rest. Amina went on to invite Kitara to eat, at which Kulani nodded in agreement and gestured towards the kill with her muzzle as if to say 'go ahead.' It was for them, after all.

While she rested she began to groom herself. Even though she didn't mind the small amount of blood that had gotten on her chin and chest, the comment from Kulani had made her more aware of her appearance. So, she groomed herself, leaning her neck down to lick her paws and chest. She would stay with the cubs while they ate and then escort them back to pride rock. After all, it was her job to protect the future of the pride, and it was one she took very seriously.

Kitara stared at Kulani' red-tined muzzle, and then glanced back down at the fallen impala. The lioness was right--kills did get bloody sometimes, but this was a little too sloppy, she had to say. She gave a little wrinkle of her nose before edging closer to the prey. Her mouth gaped open slightly as the smell drifted closer. She had to admit that there was nothing more appetizing than the smell of a freshly-fallen meal.

The cub hopped over next to Amina, holding her head up high in a very cubbish fashion. "It's KiTara," she noted, leaning in to take a bite. Her little teeth also struggled to get a solid hold, and the cub found herself bracing her front two paws on the side of the creature and yanking back with her head.

"Oof," she groaned, falling down onto her butt. She whipped her head around, checking for the expressions on the two lioness's faces. "It's not funny," she said, a huge frown darkening her face. "SO don't laugh," she added. An afterthought, but an entirely too late one.

"It's not my fault this stupid impala is too hard to eat," she said, pushing herself away from the animal. She plopped down onto the grass, though stayed a fair distance from Kulani.

When Kitara was slightly put off by the gory platter, Amina, at first, was genuinely surprised. Perceiving her as possessing more of a tomboyish demeanor, the partially squeamish reaction almost subtracted from that image. However, she would never say that out loud. There’d surely be a severe tongue lashing ready and waiting for her from the small lioness.

Thinking about it further, she herself had never really noticed the different killing styles that could be accomplished by hunters; some animals would be tidier with it, finishing off their prey more neatly than others were capable of. Becoming aware of that, she reconsidered the previous presumptions she had made about the other youngster.

By and by, the condition of the carcass, before or after, ended up not mattering much to her, no matter how it was done. If she wasn’t hungry, then it could stay alive and prance all over the place. At least until her stomach placed in an order.

No longer the only one eating, Amina grinned and nodded at the correction. Embarrassed, she promptly acknowledged that she knew better than to talk when her mouth was full, but guessed excitement had gotten the better of her. Before speaking again, the little lioness made sure to chew her food entirely, then swallow it.

Briefly stopping to see where Kulani had moved to, Amina’s attention quickly reverted back to Kitara when she stumbled. Concerned, she watched to see if her pridemate was okay, smiling once she knew all was well.

    It's not funny…

Ok,” she bluntly answered, holding in a chuckle that wanted to come out. As she expected, the other cub wouldn’t let the subject drop, probably taking her smile the wrong way, too. “Nobody said it was your fault,” Amina groaned, suspecting that Kitara was likely to blow any innocent reactions out of proportion. “I had trouble too, but it’s nothing to get mad about.” Sheesh.

Kulani went about grooming her chest and in a few licks had gotten most of the blood off of herself. At Kitara's trouble, Kulani smiled sweetly at the cub to help reassure her. Rising from her place, she gave the cub a small nudge with her nose to help her to her feet and then showed her to the already open piece of the carcass. "There is room for the both of you there, unless you'd like me to open a new spot for you." she offered to the cub, walking a few steps away to give her space to decide.

At Amina's words to the other cub, Kulani gave her a knowing smile as if to say 'its okay, don't worry about it.' hopefully, it would allow the tension to leave the area. Sometimes cubs were oversensitive to each other. She knew that Tanaku, her little brother was. Speaking of him, where was that boy? She looked up towards pride rock to see if she could get a gimps of the red colored cub, but so far, he wasn't on his way from what she could tell. Although, the grass was tall, and he might be around. Actually, she could see the grass rustling in the close distance as she thought about it. And soon, the tip of her little brother's tail was able to be seen. Seconds later he emerged from the tall grass and Kulani gave him a smile in greeting.

"There you are Tanaku." she said as she walked towards him and gave him a lick on the forehead, which he leaned into lovingly. "Come on, there's plenty more for you too." She said, ushering him towards the girls.

---

Tanaku looked at the impala with eagerness in his eyes. He sure was hungry! But when he saw Asima and Kitara had beaten him to the scene, his expression changed to a pout. Girls. Ew. "Oh.. hi." He greeted them without even an ounce of enthusiasm, looking up at his older sister as if to say 'who invited THEM??' before walking over to the impala.

It was a big animal to him, almost as big as his sister. But maybe not as big as his mom. He walked around to the impala's face, avoiding the area that the girls were eating at all costs. Every once in a while he would give them a sideways glance. He didn't trust them. They were girls. They were icky.
