seven common reactions to Emmeline (with explanations):

1. "Are you out of your (insert profanity of choice here) mind?"
If there is one word to describe Emmeline Vance, it is reckless. She says and does what she wants without regard for what others might think, and the more alarming her actions are, the better. She doesn't go out of her way to shock people or give them headaches, but it is a frequent side effect of her antics. Above all else, she is her own person through and through. There were never social protocols for her to follow - as the daughter of two middle-class halfblood shopkeepers, little was expected - and she never quite learned how to act. Supposedly she ought to have learned during her school years, but she never really did. There is a good heart masked by her impulsivity, but only if one takes the time to look for it. Most do not, seeing only what they want to see - a loose cannon, not quite grown up, unaware of anything resembling consequences. Despite what some think, she's well aware of what she does. She's just not sure how to stop - or even if she wants to. Crazy though she is, at least this mindset works for her, and there's no real harm in a little fun…

2. "How exactly did you get through Auror training?"
It's still something of a mystery how she made it through three years of advance training and didn't get kicked out. Some days even she doesn't know how it happened. She remembers the conversation that got her sent in that direction well enough, the poorly timed advice of her Head of House. At the time, it seemed a bit like it didn't matter what she did so long as she did something. They only took the best, supposedly, and Emmeline had to prove herself. Once she gained their acceptance, three years of training seemed like nothing at all. She's been a full-fledged Auror for three years now and has the tolerance, if not the respect, of most of her colleagues. She's definitely a bit atypical, but at least she doesn't cause any more problems than she has to. Not quite good, but certainly good enough, and she'd never hoped for more than that from anyone.

3. "You have really lovely eyes."
Her eyes are her one vanity, the highlight of her appearance. She is not by nature a vain person. She dresses simply, in comfortable clothes. She's not one for formalities or spending too much time on her appearance, period. It is the things that she had no choice about that she takes pride in. Pale blue eyes, the size of ping-pong balls, deceptively sweet. Everything about Emmeline's appearance is a deception, though not one she does anything to feed. She looks like she ought to be a sweet young thing, a wallflower, perhaps someone's trophy wife. As she sometimes says with a playful look on her face, she's perfectly adorable until she opens her mouth. She doesn't bother with cosmetics, save for a bit of eyeliner and mascara on occasion. She doesn't have to try. Somehow she hit the genetic jackpot, and she's not dumb enough to fully dislike it. Her parents are by no means her favorite, but she's got her mother's height and her father's eyes and she's good with that.

4. "Former Gryffindors… they're all the same…"
She is proud of her former affiliation, though some days she wonders why she wasn't a Hufflepuff. It would've made sense, the oddball in the House that always seemed to have more of those than anything else, but it was not meant to be. It didn't take long before Emmeline fit in just fine among her fellow lions, perhaps a little too well. She integrated well enough, blending in with the crazy in a matter of weeks. Somehow she never did anything to stand out from the herd, though she's quick to point out that she was no saint either. She just wasn't quite as infamous as some people. In her year, she had a few friends, most of whom she's still in touch with. She didn't make too much of a name for herself, and that's the best that could be said about her school years.

5. "There is no way that's going to work."
She has a certain quirky brilliance, an ability to see unexpected possibilities and map them out perfectly. If her plans actually worked on a regular basis, perhaps people would understand, but the thing about Emmeline's brilliant ideas is that they have a fifty-fifty chance of not ending in total catastrophe. Not even going as they're supposed to - just not ending in someone getting hurt. She's been banned from helping make major plans for the Order, and whenever she appears to have some brilliant idea, ducking for cover is an acceptable reaction. While she thinks it'll work… usually, it doesn't. The fact that very few of her ideas actually involve magic is downright convenient at times, as whatever ensues is easily dealt with. Not entirely uncomplicated, but there's a failsafe in case things go out of control - and more often than not, they do.

6. "Are you sure you're okay?"
Emotions come all too easily to her. If she feels it, then it is displayed on her face and all over her body. When she's in a good mood, she's the life of the party, giddy and hyperactive. When angry, ducking for cover is a perfectly acceptable reaction. And when sad… well, that's when things get messy for poor Emmeline. She's easily pushed towards mood swings, depressive episodes and the like, and she is quite the storm cloud when under the weather. She breaks down in tears at the drop of a hat, lashes out at everyone, and generally acts like a trainwreck. This goes double if the cause of her breakdown is a human being, as is often the case. She gives her heart all too easily and in the end it always ends the same - with a very broken version of Emmeline, just bracing for the next blow and looking for the next convenient place to fall apart.

7. "At least you try."
When the Order recruited her two years ago, it was the beginning of a new lease on life. She had a mission now, a reason to fight, and oh was she going to take it! Since joining, she's become a bit more anchored, though still a flawed individual. She is extremely loyal and quite the fighter when the situation calls for it, as one would expect from someone of her profession, and has become quite an asset. What she values most about her affiliation, however, is not the common goal - it's the sense of community she finds with the other members. These are people much like herself, committed to the same things, and they're stuck putting up with her. She tries to be a bit saner for them - from the looks of things, they need the sanest possible version of her - and slowly but surely, she's coming into herself. She's found friends, even an object of affection. Fingers crossed it doesn't all get taken from her…

First off, congrats on having the first ootp character. Secondly, I do like the spin you put on her. She still retains the badassness that I always pictured her having. But she seems a bit more rough around the edges.

[/dohtml]
