Melissa grew up in Detroit she was adopted by her grandparents her grandfather owned a boating company that operated on the Great Lakes. Her grandmother was a nurse and the reason that she was interested in medicine and nursing at a young age. Melissa’s parents were young when she was born, and her father was not heavily involved. Her mother who she had originally known as her sister went off to college and then moved on with her life afterwards. It wouldn’t be until when she was in High School that she would learn the truth about her parents.
High School was a breeze for the girl who was naturally smart, though she was a little hesitant when it came to the guys. She concentrated mostly on her school work and was active in schools and was on the tennis team. She was accepted in early admission to the University of Michigan for Nursing. She attended the program and graduated accepting a position at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit in the OB/GYN unit. She loved working in Labor and Delivery and wanted the chance to work in the NICU.
Meanwhile the summer before the summer semester she met her boyfriend Koda and they hit it off immediately. They had a great relationship and it lasted for just over two years. Ending the relationship was Koda’s job which scared her she was afraid that his position on the Police Department’s SWAT team would bring an untimely end to his lfie, and he had been injured a few times. Eventually after an argument about his job is how the relationship ended.
While the relationship was going on and she graduated with her BSN she proceeded on at the University for her Masters in Nursing and to become a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. After they broke up however she didn’t want to stay in the area and decided to transfer to a different college with a program in Neonatal Nurse Practitioner program. She selected Baylor University in Texas and was accepted, she was excited that they would allow her to enter midway into the program given her experience in the ER and OB/GYN as well as the fact her grades in the PNP/MSN program were excellent. She finished her NNP/MSN and graduated with honors and then moved back to Detroit, accepting a position offered in the NICU at Henry Ford Hospital.

Attended the University of Michigan first for her Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and then sat for her state boards. She passed and was hired in the OB/GYN department of Henry Ford hospital. She then continued to study at the University of Michigan also working per-diem in their Emergency Department as she began her Masters in Nursing and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program. However a year into the program after a break up with her boyfriend of two years she elected to transfer and was accepted into Baylor University’s Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Program where she graduated with honors.

On the law enforcement side Melissa has her finger prints on file due to her job and has a clean record except for one parking ticket when she was 17. Medically Melissa’s record includes a miscarriage about 9 months ago, however with no lasting complications. Melissa saw a mental health counselor while attending Baylor to deal with the miscarriage that she blamed herself for while she was at the school, finding out she was pregnant just after arriving. Melissa has not sought mental health counseling since returning to Detroit. She had also sought counseling previously when in High School when she found out that she her parents were actually her Grandparents. Other than her psychological history she has a sensitivity to NSAIDs due to the GI effects of the medications she has a clean medical history.

• Melissa hates to be called “Mel” but doesn’t mind Issa (most common with her friends) or Lissa.
• Melissa does not like snakes (or any reptile really) or any type of bug/insect/spider.
• Melissa is also slightly afraid of the dark, though mostly only when alone and it’s very embarrassing to her.
• Melissa loves to read and secretly wants to be an author though she doesn’t think that she is talented enough to do it.
• While Melissa is aware of her short comings it’s not usually until after she’s already her big mouth that she said something she shouldn’t have and there are also those occasions when it still needs to be pointed out to her
• Melissa likes to go out on the water on a boat, but she refuses to swim in any water except a pool. (The animals in the water freak her out.)
