with a long and decorated military career spanning the last couple of decades, sutcliff was requested personally by top brass among the cwg for a role in ensuring that freaks remain contained. while he doesn't run the show at the ashmont offices, he definitely has a reputation among his colleagues. regardless of who you are, if you know about him you can't fail to either admire or fear him. and now his bosses have given the order to step up measures against freaks, it's a duty he's more than happy to undertake.

lewis had always been outspoken in her dislike of the cwg and their attitudes towards freaks. sure, she might be human, but she always saw freaks as being just as deserving of the same freedoms available to others - a view that often caused her to butt heads with her father, who worked as an agent up until very recently. after an ill-fated encounter with the escapee clay her father was killed by the freak, leading her considerably rethinking her previous stance. along with the prospect of revenge.

the years since the war haven't been hard on everyone - dufort is certainly one man who has benefited a great deal from the conflict between his fellow humans and those dubbed 'freaks'. he doesn't consider himself a bad sort of guy, just an opportunist. so what if he'll sell out a freak or two in exchange for something worthwhile from agents? what's one stranger if it means he gets allowed a free pass to the mainland to see his family? and if he feigns support of the freaks' cause in order to gain their trust... well, that's just business. nothing personal.

bellamy never quite felt as though he fitted in anywhere. right from the start, he was always at odds with the people around him, and it wasn't until the course of the war when he befriended a freak on the run that he felt a sense of... belonging. okay, so he might be human, but he's never let it hold him back. not where it counts, anyway. always an active advocate of those with powers before the cwg stepped up measures, he now resides in the forest camp of the resistance, doing his bit to try and ensure their continued freedom and survival. after all, he's just as wanted by the agents by now.

for jamison, aiming low was never an option. right from a young age, she set herself on a path to success, dedicating herself to her ambitions and never settling for less. graduating college shortly after the war, she was fast-tracked to a good job in government despite her young age. with a keen eye for planning and politics, she's proved an invaluable resource and currently serves as branch director isaac raines' right-hand woman in virtually all matters. she doesn't have a great fondness for some of the cwg's actions towards freaks, but she's excellent at her job, and knows better than to comment.

in an ideal world, mackenzie would be anywhere but in ashmont. but when she lost contact with her power-possessing sister shortly after her arrival in the city at the end of the war, she was left with little choice but to follow after her in the hopes of finding her and easing her worries over her sibling, however, beyond the fact that she was seen in the apparently unappreciated company of cwg agents, she hasn't found a trace of her sister, and fears the worst. not that she'll ever give up trying until she get answers, of course.

despite having found himself in a position to flee ashmont and the persecution freaks like him face there, milligan made the stranger choice to stay right where he was. having fought during the last war, he harbours a particular grudge for the cwg, and an intense desire to see them brought down one way or another. he doesn't profess to be a saint - willing to go to extremes if it means scoring a victory against the agents. or just to prove a point. as a result, the freak resistance group established in the forest is understandably wary of him, and his rather unpredictable nature. even if he would be an asset to them.

for wallis, family has always been everything. and it's in the hopes that she might see her family again one day that motivates her to continue assisting the cwg. of course, it's not an easy thing for one freak to openly go against her own kind, but they aren't any family of hers, and she certainly feels no camaraderie towards them. she earnestly supports the detainment of 'dangerous' freaks, though admittedly has her moments of doubt in other cases. but since thry continue to promise that they'll reunite her with her family, what choice does she really have but to go on doing her bit?

cabello has always had a reputation for being a bit of a rogue. personally, he hasn't found life in ashmont too hard, staying under the radar just enough to avoid the notice of the cwg, and offering his assistance to other freaks. whether it's getting others out of the city and leading them to the resistance camp, procuring supplies or just pointing them in the direction of the nearest safe house, he's happy to lend a hand to his fellow freak. for a price, of course, but hey, since he's sticking his neck out for others, he figures a little reward really isn't all that much to ask.

life in ashmont for kim was tough enough already before the cwg started escalating their violence. a korean native, finding herself in an unfamiliar country surrounded by unfamiliar people was quite the shock. particularly when her own family were still far away back home, most likely with little to no clue of her whereabouts. in recent weeks, she's wound up falling in with the band of freaks in the forest camp, though she still has a tough time actually relaxing around anyone, even if they are allies for the time being. after all, it's not like she knows a single one of them. not really.

bishop never wanted powers. hell, he hates being labelled a freak, and will happily beat the crap out of anyone he hears referring to him as such. he's more than willing to assist the cwg in detaining others like himself after witnessing the devastation freaks caused during the war. and after everything, he really doesn't mind much what they decide to do with him after the fight is won. possessing more than a little self-loathing over what he is, he's more than happy to vent it on other hapless freaks, whether they're deemed dangerous or not. really, he doesn't care much one way or the other.

the last war between freaks and humans took about everything tyler had. she lost her family in the fighting, including her two children, and for a long time struggled considerably with this after her arrival in ashmont. but while others have found themselves worse off in the last year of renewed violence, she has instead attained an approximation of peace with the resistance members, having settled into the role of an unofficial 'mother' about the camp. it's not where she had hoped her life would go, but doing a little good these days does help to reconcile the past, even just a little.
the year is 2018, four years after the first war between humans and gifted individuals came to an end, resulting in these so-called 'freaks' being rounded up and confined to the island city of ashmont, where they could be monitored by agents of the central world government - the combined forces of western powers with the shared goal of safeguarding humanity against the threat that superpowers pose.
after four years of escalating tensions, things have finally reached boiling point between the CWG and the freaks of ashmont. in the last year, government attitudes towards freaks has stepped up in their hostility, with all known individuals possessing powers being detained, tortured and sometimes never seen again in the name of ensuring humanity's safety. other freaks work with the agents with the promise of exemption from these new measures, even if it means betraying their own kind.
some freaks have formed a loose resistance group in the more remote and protected reaches of the island, planning to strike back against the agents and get their old lives back. however, with their already diminished numbers, it remains to be seen whether their powers alone are enough to even their odds of survival.
