DEVILíS SNARE AND THE VENUS FLYTRAP

ďHello class. Todayís weíre going to be talking about Devil's Snare as well as a closely related muggle plant, the Venus flytrap. Now, devilís snare looks a bit like this,Ē she said, flicking her wand to display this IMAGE. It is sometimes confused with flitterbloom in appearance but, unlike Devilís Snare, it is harmless.

ďThe Devilí Snare is composed of a collection of soft, springy tendrils and vines that are very sense of touch. This plant uses its tendrils to trap anyone who touches it, binding their arms and legs and eventually choking them. The harder a person struggles against Devil's Snare, the faster and more tightly it binds them. If a person relaxes, it will not kill them as quickly. The plant no longer senses struggle or tension, it will pull its victims under its vines and drop the bodies to the ground underneath. This might have been because the plant believe that the victim has died. Devil's Snare prefers a dark, damp environment instead one that is well lit. In front of bright light, the plant will recoil away from a fireís heat. If one would place a flame spell or a light charm correctly, it will make the plant release its victims.

ďA little Hogwarts history for you. In 1991, one of Hogwarts former Herbology professors, Professor Sprout, used Devilís Snare as the second defense to guard the Sorcererís Stone. In 1998, in the Battle of Hogwarts, the same professor used Devil's Snare against the attacking Death Eaters and giants by placing the plants around the castles.

ďNow, thereís a plant in the Muggle world that also has the capability of trapping its prey in sort of a similar manner. The Venus flytrap, also known by its scientific name Dionaea muscipula, is from the subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States. It is closely related to the waterwheel and sundew plants and is part of the Droseraceae.

ďThis is what the Venus Flytrap looks like,Ē Professor McCalman said as she flicked her wans again to display IMAGE. It catches its prey, which is mostly insects and arachnids in a different manner as the Devilís snare. It uses a trapping structure made of a terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves that is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces. When its prey crawls along the leaves and touches a hair, the leaf closes if a different hair is touched within twenty seconds of the first contact.

ďThatís enough for class today. Make sure to complete the homework on the board and turn it in the next time this class meets.Ē
