Title: Facebook.

A_C - February 19, 2010 07:47 PM (GMT)
I think I may be the last person on the earth who hasn't got one. I keep getting bugged by people to get one, should I finally give in and get one? It's just that I dislike the whole 'facebook culture' and the amount of time people spend on there. I know I'll end up wasting time on there instead of actually doing work if I do get one, I don't know whether I should just keep avoiding it.

So, should I sign up or not? <_<

CubbieDream - February 19, 2010 07:54 PM (GMT)
Facebook is going the way of Myspace IMO, I have had one for around 3 years now. It's good to keep in touch with people, and have a place you know you can find people. I barely go on there any more though, much more of a twitter man now. Probably worth getting just to keep in touch with people AC, but it's not that hard to avoid spending time on there any more, or at least I don't find it that hard.

:D

Tijani - February 19, 2010 07:59 PM (GMT)
I only got a facebook last year and it can be good for killing some time and keeping in touch with people.

I have never really got into the facebook/myspace/twitter/bebo thing.

A_C - February 19, 2010 08:01 PM (GMT)
Is it getting like Myspace? Oh dear. I had one of those a few years ago, but dumped it after the millions of friend request I kept getting from 16-year-old emo girls
I guess fb is handy to keep in touch with people I don't see much. That's why I'm considering it.

I do already have a wordpress blog & Tumblr and waste enough time on them.

galraen - February 19, 2010 08:06 PM (GMT)
Best thing I've done in recent mponths is get onto Facebook, the worst thing I've done in recent months is get onto facebook!

OK not really the worst thing, but it gets the message across that it's a two edged sword. Great for connecting, or reconnecting with friends. One of the things that made the past Yuletide memorable was getting back together with some friends I hadn't seen in years, almost decades in one instance. All due to FB.

It can take up time though, and it is very easy to overload on friends who you hardly know, if you actually know them at all, and get dragged into groups you later regret getting involved with. I still wouldn't be without it though.

CubbieDream - February 19, 2010 08:08 PM (GMT)
Wordpress blog eh, have to send me the link to that :D

Facebook is full of aplications and things now, I think it's quite easy to avoid them if you want to though, so it's not like Myspace in that regard where you got requests every other second. It's still a 1000 times better than Myspace ever was.

I wasn't really into social media either, had a myspace, but like you AC, stopped using it because I got a ton of friend requests from emo girls and myspace bands.

Twitter is a great way to form connections though, and good to keep up with athletes, and how I found out that Jay Feely reads GGN lol

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 08:13 PM (GMT)
it can be very handy for alot of things. My class at college use it for updating on deadlines etc. Use it for organising nights out, knowing what gigs are on and you can attach some useful stuff that gives you up to the minute baseball info and such.

A_C - February 19, 2010 08:22 PM (GMT)
It sounds like you're all pretty positive about it. As F&C said it would be handy for gigs. I think I might just have to bite the bullet and get one....I think I'd rather add people I don't see much than my actual friend as I'll end up speaking to them on there instead of in real life.

Is there a UK MLB supporters group I can join? :D

And, Cubbie, Jay Feely reads GGN!!! Awesome.

CubbieDream - February 19, 2010 08:31 PM (GMT)
It happens AC, seen a couple of people in rooms opposite each other talking on their laptops on facebook. No idea about the gig stuff, but keeping in contact with people who are living a bit away is always good. Only way I have been able to keep in contact with two of my best mates from college who are currently trecking across the globe.

Wanted to have a chat with you actually AC, about London town, you still living there arn't you?

A_C - February 19, 2010 08:37 PM (GMT)
haha...It be helpful to speak to people I've met in New York who I don't see all that much. I think that's the main appeal to me.

Yeah, I am. I'm up in Edinburgh occasionally, but mainly London. I'll add you if you want to ask me about or just ask here, either is good

CubbieDream - February 19, 2010 08:40 PM (GMT)
Just need to switch laptops, and will send you a PM.

Don't get too excited :P

Would it help new people find this new board easier? If it would it sounds like a good idea.

Well I did it. I kinda feel like I sold my soul :o

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 09:55 PM (GMT)

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:07 PM (GMT)

12 members. Two guys post from time to time. I might throw a link up to this website on it.

I would change or add in this website on our one though.

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:20 PM (GMT)
I've added it into the links.

dazedandconfused - February 19, 2010 10:25 PM (GMT)
232 members, quite a few familiar names from baseballfan.co.uk.

Surely the purpose of groups on a social networking site is to get all like minded together, not to fragment them because you want 'your one'. It's one of the reasons I can't be bothered with it any more.

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:25 PM (GMT)
also if anyone gets confused our one is the one with the big pic of Jason Heyward :)

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:26 PM (GMT)
alright dazed calm down I didn't know there was another one. I'll just delete it then if there's no point in it

Apologies, I now see that group now but it only came up when I searched for UK Baseball and it didn’t come up when I searched UK MLB.

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:38 PM (GMT)
so will I just delete it then?

CubbieDream - February 19, 2010 10:44 PM (GMT)
I've never really seen the point in facebook groups to be honest *runs and hides*, most of the ones I have looked at are either inactive, or are just a muddled version of a forum.

fishandchippers - February 19, 2010 10:45 PM (GMT)
ok i'll delete it. TJ i think you have to leave it before i can though. Can't find an option for deleting it.

I actually completely agree and most of the time after I have joined a group I never go back and look at it again.

that's it deleted. Well that was a waste of time

3RiversPirate - February 20, 2010 12:06 AM (GMT)
I got one over a year ago and find it very useful to keep in touch with the family of my late girlfriend / soul mate who put pictures up of her grandson.I do find though that I keep getting invitations to accept friends I hardly know, and miss not having just half a dozen that I used to have and agree with what was said in the papers about only 3% of facebook friends would help you out in a crisis.
The downside is that it can be quite time consuming and one can get roped into other peoples passions with request for support for their concerns.I think it's just a trend and something else will replace it in a couple of years and prove that the hundreds of million dollars that are paid for these websites are way over the top...as in Friends Reunited....
