Characters PersonalityPersonality: If you had to sum up Sam in one word, it would have to be determined. She's a woman with a dogged determination to see things through. She got quite the reputation in her job as being the lawyer you saw when you wanted the pit bull in the ring. Not that she won everything, and she can take failure badly, often gorging on ice cream and chocolate syrup to drown her woes, which is far better than drowning them in alcohol in her opinion.
Sam has a need to prove herself, to prove TO herself that she's more than the sum of her gender and while she comes across as sweet and gentle, the claws will come out when needed. She has a quick wit, a clever mind but manages to keep that feminine quality that men like, though she's very picky when it comes to men, her standards being so high that it's rare for her to let anyone in. Sam gives her all in everything she does, and she can find it mentally exhausting but she's stubborn and won't lean on anyone for strength.

Personal History: Sam was born an Army brat while her father was serving at Fort Benning, Georgia, only child and, to her fathers chagrin, a girl. Sure, he loved her, but he made no secret of the fact that he would have really liked a son, and he sated his disappointment by enrolling Sam in baseball, taking her fishing, camping, hiking and all that stuff that a father was supposed to do with a son and Sam tried hard to make her dad proud.
This followed her through her childhood and into her teens, though her father was clearly more uncomfortable with spending time with her when she developed breasts. It was as if he suddenly realised she really was a girl and it was harder than ever for Sam to make him proud. She got an award in science, but was only average in sports and her father was disappointed. She had a supportive mother, at least, always assuring Sam that it was just her fathers way. He was brought up to believe that men ran the household, they were the breadwinners, the fighters, the strong ones and the women should stay at home, but Sam chafed under this. What had happened to the freedom she'd been afforded in her youth? Now that she had tits she wasn't fit for anything outside of cooking and cleaning?
Her education and friendships were erratic, as her father moved bases every few years, but she pushed herself in her studies as best she could.
The moment she was old enough, she enlisted in the army and followed a paralegal course of training. If she had to be a woman, then she could be one who was looked up to, who was respected and she did just that, working through the ranks quickly and gaining her bar when she was twenty five.
After that, she spent her time working on cases, trying to keep the military name clean and even fell in love and got married at twenty seven, mere months before the earthquakes began.
She and John were aboard a small party boat, enjoying the reception of a friends wedding when the waters began to swell dangerously. Sam had been looking forward to this night, because she was going to announce to John that she was pregnant, but things soon turned into chaos as the boat rocked violently and screams were heard as the tsunami was sighted. John shoved Sam into the bathroom, yelling at her to lock the door and he'd be with her in a moment and though Sam begged him to stay with her, she also understood that John was a protector, he wouldn't be able to live with himself if he saved himself and did nothing to help the others, so Sam waited.
The boat was rocked, the boat almost tipped, the screams slowly stopped and Sam was knocked out when her head hit the wall hard. When she came to, the water was calm again, but when she unlocked the door and ventured outside, she was alone. Unable to give into the grief because of her unborn child, she instead lived on what food had been left locked in the kitchen of the boat, rationing it out and praying that she and her baby would be safe.
