THE SIRENS ARE SCREAMING AND THE FIRES ARE HOWLING, WAY DOWN IN THE VALLEY TONIGHT. THERE'S A MAN IN THE SHADOWS WITH A GUN IN HIS EYE AND A BLADE SHINNING OH SO BRIGHT. THERE'S EVIL IN THE AIR AND THERE'S THUNDER IN THE SKY. AND A KILLER'S ONT HE BLOODSHOT STREETS. OH AND DOWN IN THE TUNNEL WHERE THE DEADLY ARE RISING, OH I SWEAR I SAW A YOUNG BOY DOWN IN THE GUTTER. HE WAS STARTING TO FOAM IN THE HEAT.--
Like A Bat Out Of Hell,
Sam swallowed hard, having a hard time putting to rest the emotion he had seen in Dean. And he knew Dean could read him like a book. Something was bothering both of them and neither one would budge. But Sam like always couldnt let it go for long, he needed Dean to talk, and maybe for once he could stop trying to protect Dean. But he had been through so much and loosing Castiel had put a damper on them, it had taken its tole on Dean. Sam hated feeling so pulled in so many directions. His sanity wasnt exactly something he wanted to question but wasnt it true that he was going crazy? Dean knew what had been going on but he didnt know the extent, Sam was beginning to question really whether or not he was really out of the cage or not. So much had happened, he knew he was in reality but the lining between this world and that one was beginning to pull against him. He didnt know what to believe anymore.
Sighing he joined Beth as she headed out towards the car. He couldnt help but smile as he got in, handing Dean a bag as he got in the car. He had grabbed it on the way out after locking the hotel room. He knew Dean wouldnt pass up apple pie. "It might still be warm. I stopped at the diner a few blocks back....figured you could use it." Sam said as he buckled himself into the back seat. He looked at Dean through the rear view mirror and tired to lessen the tension between them just a little. "Thanks for coming to get me....Jerk." Sam said humorously as he smirked slightly at Dean as he sat back, ready to head to Beth's.
He didnt know what tonight would really be like, having a home cooked meal and being somewhat normal wasnt something they had been used to, or even Sam remembering. Sam never really had a home cooked meal unless it was at a girlfriends house when he was little or invited over to a few acquaintances before they would hit the next town. Jessica had been his only normal tie and she had made sure she cooked. So now, Sam couldnt deny that he wasnt a little excited for a decent non-diner food that he had left back at the hotel in the mini fridge. But with the tension they both had been having he hoped tonight did at least go without anger from either one of them. Sam would try, at least for Beth, their problems shouldnt be put on her. She didnt deserve it, Sam already felt like he had screwed up her life enough, his problems and Deans shouldnt be put on her shoulders.
I'M GONNA HIT THE HIGHWAY LIKE A BATTERING RAM,
ON A SILVER BLACK PHANTOM BIKE. WHEN THE METAL IS HOT AND THE ENGINE IS HUNGRY, AND WE'RE ALL ABOUT TO SEE THE LIGHT. NOTHING EVER GROWS IN THIS ROTTING OLD HOLE, EVERYTHING IS STUNTED AND LOST. AND NOTHING REALLY ROCKS, AND NOTHING REALLY ROLLS; AND NOTHING'S EVER WORTH THE COST.--

Dean was far from amused at this point, that should have been clear the moment that Sam tried to hand Dean the apple pie. Sure Dean loved pie, hell he could take a bath in it and be just as happy, but now was not the time or place for it. It was true that he was stressed but then again so was Sam. But Dean blamed himself for all of this happening to everyone they cared about. For not seeing sooner that Cas needed help. But what was a little more when it came to his brother's well being. He hated knowing that Sammy suffered.
Dean only glanced back at Sam for a moment when he made the 'Jerk' comment, obviously trying to get things to go back to the way they were. "Bitch," he muttered to Sam though he did not bother to take the pie that was offered to him. Instead he was more focused on getting them to Beth's place without getting them into an accident.

When Dean didn't take the pie that Sam had offered him, Beth knew something was wrong. Back at the bar, when she had mentioned food, his whole demeanor had changed and he had perked up almost instantly. His ignorance of her apology didn't help. Beth felt like she had been burned. She hesitated a second before she dropped her hand from his shoulder and sat back against the seat with a small sigh. Looking forward, she wondered what she could do to ease the tension in the car. She had promised earlier in the motel room that she would explain how she and Sam had met when they were on the road. She might as well start there.
Breaking the silence, Beth's soft soprano filled the car as she started her explanation. "To explain how me and Sam met... Well, the simplest way for me to put it is that I caught him stealing holy water." she said with a small smile on her lips as she continued looking out the windshield. "From there, I kind of tried to give him a lecture and help him out some. He... seemed a little lost. He wanted to talk, but something was holding him back. I realize now that he didn't want to share his... both of your burdens with little ol' innocent me. That was sweet of him, of you." she said with a soft smile on her lips. "Then the demon's attacked." she added with a sour note. "Sam hustled me, and Father John back into the preacher's office and bared the door. He drew the protection seals and made me line the place with salt. Then the exorcising began. Everything was going seemingly fine until that one demon broke the barrier. She... she killed Father and pinned Sam to the wall. I-I acted on instinct. That knife, the one with the strange markings on the hilt, Sam had dropped it and I used it to stab the thing..." she said, her voice getting rougher from emotions she was trying hard to suppress. Clearing her throat, Beth continued. "The demon died and somehow Kelsey, the body's owner, was still alive. We took her to the hospital, Sam helped me come up with a cover story, and that is pretty much that." she finished and let out a short breath.
Looking down at her hands in her lap, she saw that they were shaking. Clenching her fist, she closed her eyes and let out a deep breath. When she was sure that she had some control over herself, she turned to access Dean's reaction.

Sam knew it wasnt going to be easy but when was that term ever thrown around with them? Easy wasnt in their nature nor did they ever catch a break. Life was never easy, never smooth and never something that was lived normally by them. Hunting demons, anything that went bump in the night was their job. Normalcy wasnt their life. But at least to Sam, this was normal and honestly he had grown to be used to their mood changes. When was Dean not frustrated with him? Why was Sam not frustrated with Dean? You work so closely with someone, and the being family part didnt help either with their tension but it made it complicated and it was harder to talk about. Honeslty how could you tell someone you were loosing your mind? Seeing Lucifer wasnt exactly something Dean liked to talk about so how could Sam come out and say it had gotten worse without sounding like he needed to be locked away? He couldnt and for that it stayed locked away in his vault of secrets kept from Dean and lately it seemed to be piling up.
Sighing he turned to Beth who was reliving their first meeting. Sam hated her life was changed so drastically and she had to witness something like that but she was strong, Sam was beginning to see that he should have given her more credit. She was strong but even then their lives shouldnt have clashed and brought this upon hers. Just a wrong place, wrong time situation. Sam was glad to hear that Kelsy was okay and that she was alive. Traumatized Sam was sure but at least for now she was stable and okay, other wise Beth would have told them. Sam just hoped their seeing each other again tonight didnt turn out in vain and another mess with the supernatural. Even hunters deserved a night off and Sam wanted to keep her away from the supernatural.
He also waited to see Dean's reaction, thinking she told the night quite well he sat quiet, curious as to himself what Dean would think. Would he call him reckless for bringing someone innocent in? But he honestly had no choice.

Oh this was just freaking fastenating. Dean kept his eyes trained on the road the whole time she was spewing out the story about what happened. Not that he could have helped since he was busy dealing with a ghost that night in another town. Hearing the story only brought his rage up to the surface even more. But of course they only met other people the same freaking way in every freaking town they stop at. Only when there is something Supernatural involved.
"I hate to break it to you but this is not very shocking to me. We meet people the same way all the time. Usually when there is a monster involved. We try and help as many people as we can without trying to get ourselves killed in the process. We have lost all of our friends one way or another and frankly we are tired of it. So its best that after tonight you have nothing to do with us."
He turned his eyes to look at her since the road was pretty much deserted. His face was hard as a rock, unreadable, but his eyes on the other hand felt for her. After all they had lost anyone they cared about because of this job. "Even being long distance friends with us is hazardous to your health."

If Beth thought she felt like she had been slapped earlier, it was nothing compared to how hard this hit would have been. The teacher actually flinched, and her body quivered in pain almost as if he had hit her. Not once did she ever think that she was the only one who got stuck in such a situation. Perhaps at first she would have believed that, but by the way Sam had handled everything, it made it clear that she wasn't the only one he had helped in his life time.
When the sting of the burn cooled, her anger rose. Turning to Dean, she looked at his face and saw his stoney expression. He meant business, but before she could lash out, she saw his eyes. Beth's face twisted as a mix of emotions consumed her, and she sat back in her seat and closed her eyes as she let out a calming breath. "My story wasn't meant to be anything special. It was just an explanation as to how I met your brother." she explained and opened her eyes, meeting his eyes with a steely gaze of her own. "You've been through a lot, both of you have, but you can't keep pushing people away. Maybe it's easier for you to cut off ties with anyone and everyone because you can't handle the possibility that they might get hurt. Here's the thing though, shit happens. You can't cut off your ties with people though. You'll destroy yourself that way. You're holding onto your last shreds of humanity by refusing yourself relationships with anyone. You're becoming an emotionless soldier who is sure to make more mistakes because he doesn't know right from wrong anymore. You need people to keep you grounded, and maybe you don't want to admit that you need help because too many people have failed you, but that doesn't mean everyone will." she ended on a soft note.
Finally, the steel in her eyes vanished and returned to their warm and cerulean. "Dean, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to cut off relations with you guys." she said softly, though she was tense, ready for his next angry outburst.

Sam couldnt help but cringe as Dean spoke to her. His words were true, but that didnt mean they had to burden her with it. She would be safe, Sam would make sure of that but she was dead set on not letting them go and that could be a problem. He couldnt say he hadnt grown fond of the blonde, he had. Their first meeting had been in his mind and he couldnt help but wonder how she was doing. She was that type of person you couldnt just get out of your head, you had to know if they were okay. He had kept tabs and knew she was at least living while he was still in town but he had no idea of her mental state. At least she was okay there, but she was still fighting the images he could tell. It would be hard on her for a while but evne with them being here wiht her she was in danger, Sam didnt want that for her; not again.
But Dean wasnt helping, there was somethings she shouldnt know. At least not about their lives. Yes they had lost people, people they loved and couldnt stop from dying. It was the worst part of the job but it wasnt something Sam could easily talk about either. But wasnt he hypocritical right now? He always forced Dean to talk, and yet here he was fighting off the sanity and barely keeping himself together. And in that moment of realization he squeezed Dean's shoulder, his eyes forceful in the mirror. "Pull over..." He said, finally voicing himself. He had to set this right. He knew this had gone on long enough between them and he could tell int he tone Dean had that he was more than angry. It was time, even with Beth here to set this right. Sam pleaded with his eyes as he pressed his lips together for Dean to pull over. He hoped Beth would forgive him for taking so long but he couldnt take this anymore, having Dean hate him was hitting to close to home, the only thing he had was his brother; and Dean angry at him was pulling his strings.

Yes, Dean was hurt that Sam wouldn't share what he was going through. Dean was always being the big brother and that part of him was never going to change. He cared for his little brother despite all the horrible things that fate threw their way. But they sure as hell didn't need to be dragging her down with them.
Sure he had a one night stand in his mind at first but he would never want to force someone into that kind of situation that was for sure. If they wanted to be with him, it was because they wanted to be with him. This however was something a little different, after going through something terrible the girl still wanted to be friends with them? She had to be crazy at even thinking that they could be friends.
Dean shrugged his shoulder to get Sam to let go of him and shook his head a bit. "Sam don't. The last thing you want to do is to drag her into this more. And as for cutting ties after tonight either you cut your ties to use or we will do it for you. Don't you get it? Being friends with us you might as well be signing your own death sentence. Nothing good can come out of this."

Beth looked between the two of them and realized that they had both agreed that by keeping her around they were putting her in danger. What had happened to them to think that their presence was like a plague to everyone they loved? She couldn't stand for this, she wouldn't. They were tearing themselves apart. This guilt was eating them alive. She couldn't stand to watch them suffer like this. She had to help. It was in her blood. She couldn't leave people in need. She wouldn't give up on them.
Dean wouldn't give her the chance though. The glare she shot him rivaled a furious mother's, and she shook her head in disbelief. "If that is what you think then why are you letting me drag you and Sam to my house for a meal? Shouldn't you just cut off all relations with everyone so that you don't have to worry about people getting hurt? If that's how you thought, then you would have never agreed. You are trying to do what you think is right, and I appraise you for that, but Dean, please. You're head might not agree, but your heart is telling you to take the risk and to trust me." she finished with a small frown. "I know I don't seem like much, that I can't take care of myself. And maybe compared to what you guys have been put up against, I can't. But I'm not you. That isn't my life. I won't be put in the same positions as you two. I believe that I am in no danger, and that befriending you will not change that. I also believe that some good can come out of this, and that we can be great friends if given the chance." she said with a hesitant smile. "I think you guys need a stubborn friend like me if not to put you in your place, then to make you nice meals and to take care of you." she added. She knew she was fueling Dean's anger, but she hoped that he would see some sense.
When Sam asked for Dean to pull over, she met his gaze and realized that he was finally ready to talk to his brother. Dean brushed it off though with his worry about involving her too much. Beth let out a soft sigh and turned towards the two brothers. "How about this. We get to my place and you guys can talk all you want while I start making supper. I'll give you guys your privacy to hash things out, but if you two start beating up on each other, I'm not apologizing if one of you gets hit with a frying pan." she joked, hoping to lighten the mood some.

High Way To Hell
Lucifer sat back, unable to control his laughter as Sam broke down and tried to have a brother moment with Dean. Oh it was sad to see Sam squirm like that, but he brought it on himself. Sam hadnt been honest, and that was Lucifer's first rule, always be honest and never lie...the choice of words used was the other matter. "Sammy, Sammy, Sammy. I told you he wouldnt take kindly to you not talking to him, but what does he really care Sam? I mean look at him, all huff and puff but does he really care? If he did he'd pull the car over, he'd pull it over and make you talk. Family is only blood deep Sam. Sometimes blood isnt enough, trust me I know. I had to kill my own to survive...they wanted me dead Sam. No matter what Dean tells you, you know the truth Sammy boy...you know its a matter of time before you crack...before you break down and is he going to stay with you or leave you Sam? Dean cant handle this....and you know it." Lucifer said with a smile as he looked over at Sam.
Spreading his body out and laying himself comfortably on the seat he put his hands behind his head. "You know pretty soon Sam these visions you're having are gonig to start waring on you, taring down your mind and its going to eventually let me back in. You can push me away all you want but I'm inside you Sam. You're soul will always have a piece of me. I rode you bareback Sam. Now tell me you dont feel a darker part of you calling out, wanting to break free. Thats me, thats the part of you that wants to let me back in Sam. And I'll get there....its only a matter of time before you see the truth Sammy boy...only a matter of time." Lucifer said with a side smirk, only a white lining could be seen of his teeth. And then he nodded towards Sam and then was gone, as if no traces of him had ever touched the seat.

Like A Bat Out Of Hell,
Sam hated the fighting, the aggravation and most of all the tension between him and Dean. He knew it was partly his fault for closing him out but he thought he had a grip on everything, not being a poster child for Lucifer again. He didnt know how to just come out and tell Dean he was on the verge, on the edge of breaking and he didnt know how long he'd last this time. It was sad, to know that his mind was playing tricks on him and he knew that deep down but he couldnt help but wonder if he really was out of hell. Because each and every day it reminded him that Lucifer wasnt defeated and he could very well still be in that cage. With a sigh he listened to both Beth and Dean go back and forth and hated it, even more so when Dean didnt pull over.
He knew she understood what they were talking about, the pain and fear one could have with their lives. And not to mention the constant death that followed them, she had seen it first hand and yet she still seemed dead set on being int heir lives. Sam had to admit she had a bigger back bone to stand on Dean's words the way she did, a small smile crept onto his lips as he looked at Dean in the mirror, hoping to catch his brother's eyes to let him know, she was going to be a hard one to shake, and honestly for once in a long time Sam wasnt in a rush to say goodbye.
He dropped his gaze, swallowing hard as he shifted roughly in the seat, pressing against his hand where the scar was that had been when he cut his hand. He pressed hard, digging his nails into his palm as he remembered the pain, getting rid of Lucifer the first time. Pressing his lips together roughly he closed his eyes and laid his head back on the seat as Lucifer spoke. He couldnt talk back. He saw that both Beth and Dean acted as if they didnt hear Lucifer and they couldnt, it was all in Sam's mind. It was true, he was going crazy and he pressed harder on his palm, digging his nails as hard as he could into the skin to make himself feel pain. Finally looking the devil in the eyes as he disappeared, relieved and terrified Sam. When was the next time he was going to pop up? Sighing with relief Sam stopped picking at his palm that had drew just a little blood and sighed, he was glad he was able to keep quiet, not wanting to alarm anyone in the car about what had just occurred. He'd tell Dean tonight, all he could do would be to brace him...for the worst.
