I've never really understood the appeal of superheroes.

I don't understand them either; they only exist to act as a foil for superheroes. Supervillains all have to have some superpower, a superhuman ability, or genius intelligence in order to be on the same level as the superhero, otherwise we're left with the story of a man who can shoot laserbeams from his forehead taking out low-level drug pushers and the occasional mugger.

Even some of the most evil, shady, and politically powerful organizations that feature in other genres of fiction are easier to accept, even if they're just being evil for the sake of evil, trying to topple whole governments, or attempting to kick off a nuclear war, at least they aren't a bunch of arseholes with superpowers who go by silly pseudonyms and wear themed costumes (which incidentally describes both superheroes and villains).

For some reason while reading that I pictured Stephen Hawking in a purple and black villain suit. Code name: Wicked Wheeler

That's the idea, retarded name and costume, but he'd also have to be more than 6' tall and about as muscular as a professional bodybuilder.

The idea in which superheroes was conceived was a very strange time. And no one wishes to change the formula. They alter it (X-men isn't always the grand superhero thing, just most of the time) but don't change it. Might be something like the Ten Commandments for comics.

Probably why I read Manga more, it's more different than what you would (or wouldn't) think

Renard, there once was a villain who was a brain in a jar.

And he had a huge ape sidekick.

Or something.

But... holy smokes! Metaphor for evolutionists Batman!

Maybe not really, but... eh.

Point being, Stephen Hawking could be a supervillain/hero...

It's a great summer blockbuster, one that makes you see how poor are.

Which is a massive achievement considering how flimsy the plot is.

The brain villain was called "The Brain."

His side kick, the talking Gorilla, was French.

Eventually the Brain got a robot body and him and the gorilla confessed their gay love for each other before dying as their evil lair crumbled around them.

No....I am serious, that actually happened in the comics.
Go look it up if you don't believe me...or if you want to see a robot and a gorilla making out.

I still don't understand the whole costume thing, it just strikes me as impractical and silly, especially when they have a themed costume. It's really hard to be subtle and get the drop on someone when you're dressed in skin-tight spandex and PVC, but how many superheroes/villains even consider subtlety?

Well comics were originally for kids. And a lot of the time these were characters that would bring a lot of presence. Also the whole secret identity thing, but that can be solved with any kind of mask. Though wearing the same mask as the robber won't give you points.

Also, people like to screw around with their imaginations.
