Wordweaver raised an interesting point recently when I poste a picture of Zilfay-
I thought there would be hell TOUPEE (see what I did there?) if I didn't address his concerns. I have never been overly keen on furry characters that also have hair on top. Like if you have a fox character who is covered in red fur but then has long red hair. To me it just looks a bit silly or like they have a wig on. Also its generally just chicks that get this secondary hair on top, which also seems weird. How does that work? Why doesn't everyone get it? Also...if they go bald does the hair fall out but they still have fur? It is not a look I care for so I don't include it in Harkovast (except animals that have a mane, like horses or cows, where it comes naturally.) Now what have and will continue to include is giving characters longer fur that acts like hair. This already happens in the comic, with Muir's 'tache, Brightleaf's crazy fringe and Scatterpods long fur at the back of her head. Other characters have it more subtly, like Ki having slightly spiky feathers on top of his head. Zilfay takes it a stage further by actually tying it into a pony tail, but I have no problem with that, as long as it seems like a natural extension of her all over fur, not a separate hair in a different colour. Hope that clears up my stance on hair on furries (Did anyone care but me? Who knows?) -------------------- "...the details escape me right now."

But why bother with longer hair on head at all? It looks ugly on characters, Scatterpod first and foremost.

It doesn't really bother me, and since we're talking about creatures that actually exist or need to work in a real-world situation I don't really care what explaination you have for it.
But if we're going to pick nits; your explanation would imply that either only the fur on their head grows longer (which is fine with me), or that everyone has all of their fur grow very long, and they have to trim it all off, leaving only the parts that they want to keep long. Like topiary. -------------------- 3330 Harkopoints

StyxD Its just to let me do different designs of characters that look cool and differentiate them.
You don't like Scatterpod now? When did that start? Renard lets say it sometimes grows longer on their heads (and give me some artistic licence.) -------------------- "...the details escape me right now."

Who said I don't like Scatterpod? I only dislike her "hair". When did this start? Well, since I was taking reference for fanart and had to take a good look at her.
Is this really different from those "furry characters that also have hair on top"? It's like in Harkovast they're only limited to mullets. -------------------- 2160/9001 Harko-points

What races (besides the Tsung-Dao) can't grow anything analogous to hair?
Do they ever get jealous of those races that can? If Chen-Chen (or more likely Shan-Zu, she's more hot-headed) were to stay with Zilfay and Scatterpod for a while would she start to grow envious of Zilfay's ponytail, or Scatterpod and her glorious orange mullet? -------------------- 3330 Harkopoints

Reptilian/amphibian based races dont have any kind of hair. Tendu, Tsung-dao and Brorg-Dao are the main ones I can think of.
Nymus, Komus, Lepmus and Tahmus has feathers that serve the same purpose. With regard to hair envy...Tsung-Dao think they look fine the way they are. They would be unlikely to envy fur any more than the furry characters would envy Chen-Chens cool blue ridges that run down her head. I suppose they might, but there is not particular reason that they would. Unless one of them was possessed with a desire to look like another race (which could happen.) Though we all envy the orange mullet, obviously. The orange mullet is fucking awesome. -------------------- "...the details escape me right now."

Those are ridges on her head? I just thought they were chevron shaped blue stripes.

I don't envy the orange mullet. I've had an orange mullet.

Renard well when I say ridges I was thinking they were larger scales. Though I dont think its a very important distinction really.
Markings...large scales...ridges...doesn't really matter which you think it is. Orange mullets on the other hand....they are the stuff of LEGEND! -------------------- "...the details escape me right now."
