|The First Expedition > News and Events > Competition 1 – The First Expeditionary|
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 11 2013, 11:34 AM|
| The launch of the First Expeditionary Fleet was a grand affair, presided over by the Emperor himself, and involving the launch of thousands of ships to explore, reclaim and conquer the worlds of the galaxy in the name of mankind.
Among those who looked skywards were the brave soldiers and sailors of the Imperial Army and Navy, countless supernumeraries, toting-men and quartermasters, and of course members of the twenty Legions of the Astartes.
From fresh-faced recruits to hard-bitten mercenary captains, the First Expedition represented the cream and steel of humanity, drawn from Terra, Luna and Mars. It was truly a compact of heroes, drawing its fuel from every natstat, nom-people and hive-city of the nascent Imperium.
This competition is designed for you to test your imagination and produce a miniature, converted and painted to the best of your ability, to represent a single member of the First Expedition. This may be a starship pilot, a brute savage herded into the Army, a restless aristocrat, an Astartes warrior in early mark armour, one of the rating dregs of the enginarium, a petty functionary, or any of the other hundreds and thousands of humans on board the ships of the First Expedition.
A member of the First Expedition – the first group of people to set off on the Great Crusade.
The peoples of Terra, Luna and Mars have expanded outwards through the Sol System, rendering all the planets, dwarf planets and satellites Compliant to the Imperial Truth. All Hail the Master of Mankind!
While this does put a few limits on what you can do – no Primarchs have yet been discovered, for example – we hope you'll look upon this as a chance to exercise your imaginations. There are plenty of possibilities, ranging from Legionnaires from Legions as yet without a name, to the Old Hundred Imperial Army, to the more esoteric travellers, hangers-on and petty functionaries.
Most important of all – have fun!
To enter the competition
1) Post your intention to enter on this thread – there's no need to go into detail on what you intend to make, but if you'd like to, please go ahead.
2) Only models previously unposted on the noosphere (the internet in general) are eligible for entry into this contest – we'd like to encourage you to paint that model you've always wanted to do, but have never quite had the impetus.
3) Photographs should be submitted to Hyperion at: astrohaggis AT yahoo DOT com If you're struggling to get a good clean picture, in proper focus, try following the suggestions laid out in http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showtopic=6
4) Entries can be submitted from now until midday (12 noon) Sunday the 24th of February 2013. Entries received after this date will have missed the boats and be stranded on Terra.
5) In the event of a ruckus, or voting shenanigans, the Enforcers will be deployed. Please treat this competition as the bit of fun it is.
6) Any single model may be entered as long as it fits the theme of the contest. This includes different scales (Epic and Inquisitor, for example), complete scratch-builds, and non GW models.
7) Groups of models are only allowed if they are usually fielded as such (e.g. an Epic unit stand), or if one model is clearly a secondary element (e.g. a weapon bearer, familiar or servant). These secondary models must be incorporated onto the same base. Don't worry if you've got a squad or diorama in mind – we've got plenty of competitions lined up.
8) While not necessary, we would like to encourage you to write a little colour text about your model – try and evoke his or her (or its?) character and life story in a paragraph or two of text (max 500 words). This can be posted on this thread whenever you like (so there's something for you to do if you've gone ahead and got your model completed), or can be submitted in secrecy to http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showuser=1.
At the end date, we will post all of the entries in a new thread for the members of the forum to vote on which one they think best fulfils the competition theme. Voting will be open for one week. In the event of a tie, Hyperion will act as WARMASTER and make a personal choice.
The winner of the common vote will receive a hardback Horus Heresy novel of their choice from Black Library, some classic Marine parts from Rogue Trader and second edition Warhammer 40,000, and the plaudits of the forum in the form of their model being placed in The First Expedition Mausoleum, for the delectation and delight of all.
The winner of the best colour text, voted on by the members, will receive a small mystery prize.
So, what are you waiting for, troops – you've got six weeks to get to the shuttles! Good luck!
Edit - deadline extended by 1 week!

| Stupid question, but does it have to be a single model, or can it be more then one on a same base or scenic base?
+++Moderators (apolgetic!) note+++
Sorry Ahriman's Aide; I'm afraid I'm still getting used to the Moderator powers, and accidentally edited your post while trying to reply to it. If you'd like to re-edit your post, feel free! (Apologist)

| This is going to be really awesome isn't it?
I'd love to see more (late) Unification Wars / (early) Great Crusade stuff!
Sadly enough I won't be joining though, the lack of time, money and a job has that effect on a guy, but I' definitely keeping my eyes on this one!
By the way, a little nitpick: was there even such a thing as the Imperial Navy? I mean, wasn't it just part of the Imperial Army, until Guilliman separated all the branches?
|Posted by: Mortarion Jan 11 2013, 12:09 PM|
| yeah count me in
I have an idea forming....
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 11 2013, 12:29 PM|
|Excellent stuff, I already have some ideas and look forward to posting an entry!|
|Posted by: Kwll Jan 11 2013, 12:49 PM|
| great idea loveing this
think i will enter just got to come up with a good idea maybe outside standard scale as a change from painting legionares
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 11 2013, 01:10 PM|
The contest is for a single model, but as long as it's in theme, everything's fair game. I think a mini diorama could look nice
You got me – I just wanted to emphasise that you can do any member of the expeditionary fleet, and star-sailors seemed an evocative image.
|Posted by: Tarik Torgaddon Jan 11 2013, 01:27 PM|
| I have really missed these contests, they were always such a great way the get inspiration to create something awesome.
I'm thinking of going for either an AM magos, a primarch or a thunder warrior.
|Posted by: Malika Jan 11 2013, 01:32 PM|
|By the way, this theme might also be very cool to a fiction contest. Would be nice to see very optimistic 30k universe stories!|
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 11 2013, 04:06 PM|
|i got all excited then realised, im not the best painter, my sculpting isnt that good, and some of you guys are just amazing, so i decided i shall just enjoy some of the amazing stuff you guys will enter.|
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 11 2013, 04:32 PM|
|Aw, that'd be a shame – you should enter; at the very least you'll have a cool miniature to add to your collection|
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 11 2013, 04:43 PM|
| I have a few ideas but nothing that really gets my creative juices going :/ Though them 1st and 2nd ed marine bits are mighty tempting... *drools*
*INSPERATIONAL BOLT OF LIGHTNING TO THE HEAD*
|Posted by: Brother Handro Jan 11 2013, 05:19 PM|
| Good on you Der Dunkel Apostel! It's all about taking part on this board. Flagbearers for the Crusade into a dark (30k-)ignorant universe and all that!
Which means even tho' I have no hope of winning it, I'm going to be entering too.
Right now I'm thinking a Dusk Raider, or an Imperial Army grunt. In fact, I might do both, with the soldier looking up in wide-eyed awe, having never seen an Astartes up close before...yesss, I see it now...
Malika cool idea about the fiction contest, I second the motion. Still wainting for the results of the last one, mind.
|Posted by: Wulox Jan 11 2013, 06:09 PM|
|I'm in! Will have to get thinking of what to enter though!|
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 11 2013, 07:02 PM|
|do we have a last place as well. looser gets one of lauries socks or something|
|Posted by: Malika Jan 11 2013, 07:26 PM|
What about combining the two plans?
I need to be in a more mellow state of mind though before I'll organise this. Unemployment is a *&$%@
|Posted by: Pettsy Jan 11 2013, 07:26 PM|
| Can we include a paragraph of background about our entries? Would be nice to add a bit of character to this First Expedition you've created
I'm totally taking part in this either way.

| cool i needed an excuse to do another side project!
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 11 2013, 10:15 PM|
I'd like that very much. Posting the colour text in this thread will be a great way to keep everyone's motivation up, and I'll be sure to copy them over to the voting thread.
In fact, I like the idea enough that I'll pony up a prize for the Moderator's favourite colour text
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 11 2013, 11:30 PM|
Remember that the entry should only be a single miniature !*
* Unless you are mounting the squad on a bike, so they make up a triangle shape like a motorcycle display team?
|Posted by: Brother Handro Jan 12 2013, 12:00 AM|
But, but...Apologist said on the previous page that anything is fair game, as long as it's in theme!?
Can we have some clarification from our red-named overlords?
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 12 2013, 12:30 AM|
| [Admin voice activated]
I think we should keep it to just a single figure for this competition - we can do a diorama competition another time. Making this one a single figure only keeps the playing field level, isn't too big a task, and doesn't stop you doing the other cool ideas you've got.
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 12 2013, 02:08 AM|
|My (well-named!) apologies for any confusion caused. As Hyperion suggests, let's keep it to a single figure for this competition. I promise that the next contest will allow a mini diorama, in case you've got started.|
|Posted by: Lord Caldera Jan 12 2013, 02:54 AM|
|Hoo-ah, gentlemen! Great way to jumpstart the new home of the Heresy!|
|Posted by: Ahriman's Aide Jan 12 2013, 08:19 AM|
|This might be off topic, but is there a image of the 1st Expedition 1 and Diamond symbol from the banner I can turn into a decal? I'm thinking of doing the Expedition Standard, and it would be much easier then doing it freehand.|
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 12 2013, 08:31 AM|
| I've put together a decal sheet (in US Letter and A4 sizes) but it doesn't have a large icon for a banner - I'll add one.
Bear in mind I've tried to approximate useful sizes, but haven't had a chance to test it yet, so the transfer sheets are still in development.
|Posted by: IronWarriorsVorax Jan 12 2013, 04:32 PM|
|I think I will enter my Warsmith in the competition.|
|Posted by: the damned artificer Jan 12 2013, 06:14 PM|
|Count me in, this sounds like fun and I have a few ideas that hopefully will give birth to an actual product in the end and there's nothing like a great deadline to get things going|
|Posted by: IronWarriorsVorax Jan 13 2013, 03:50 PM|
So what are you going to enter?
|Posted by: the damned artificer Jan 13 2013, 08:19 PM|
| I'm currently thinking of doing some sort of character from the remembrancer order, but it might be something else.
What is the guidelines for theme, is it supposed to be early crusade only? (as that kinda leaves out the remembrancers as they wer only allowed in later on) And what is the stance on entering something that would technically be pre-crusade like something big and brutal sporting a lot of lightnings?
|Posted by: Malika Jan 13 2013, 08:26 PM|
| The Remembrancer Order might not have been around yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if Rememberancers (poets, journalists, photographers, writers, etc) were already following the Crusade.
As for your other suggestion, I'm not running this competition, and I'm only guessing on what you are suggesting here. But the big brutal fellow sporting a lot of lightnings could be done, if he somehow managed to survive the Unification Wars. It's all about the story of the figure I think...
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 13 2013, 08:31 PM|
Although we will be using the First Expeditionary Fleet at different time points as a sandbox for future events, the general theme of this competition is the time point at the very beginning of the Great Crusade, just after the end of the Unification Wars, as the Emperor takes his Legions outwards from Sol for the first time.
It's a time of hope, courage, honour, etc ...just like our move to our new forum! (...aggressive expansionism, xenophobia, genetic manipulation, ...er...)
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 13 2013, 08:33 PM|
Er, no. The few who survived the Unification Wars did not then go on to participate in the Great Crusade - the Emperor had already created his Space Marines by then, and discarded the last Thunder Warriors (as mentioned in The Outcast Dead).
|Posted by: Malika Jan 13 2013, 08:40 PM|
That might still be debatable. I mean, I would imagine that many people would try to get on the ships to go on the Crusade. Those who survived the Unification Wars might try to hitch a ride on one of those ships. It wouldn't be too difficult to imagine that I guess. Doubt the fellow would become a major character or anything, since he'd most likely try to be as incognito as possible, I mean...the http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Z1vZ0KtdDL0/UJuRZBC2DCI/AAAAAAAAAxI/_UhGZw5ajOk/s1600/IMG_1292.JPG converted by John Blanche could be such a survivor (if it were M30 or something).
EDIT: point is that not everybody who left Terra on the Crusade was actually interested to serve the Emperor in this Crusade. Many would simply be immigrants of a sorts who seek to leave the Sol system looking for new opportunity.
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 13 2013, 09:21 PM|
Absolutely love that conversion! Think some of John Blanch's stuff is great, especially his chaos-type creations. They are very minimalistic, if that makes any sense, and manage to convey a very strong sense of danger without going overboard with appendages/accessories.
|Posted by: Malika Jan 13 2013, 09:26 PM|
|Which is quite ironic, coming from Blanche, since his artwork (to me at least) seems to be quite the opposite of minimalistic, like his http://warpsignal.files.wordpress.com/2011/06/john_blanche_adeptus_sororitas.jpg|
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 13 2013, 09:36 PM|
| Yes, very true!
Although I've always thought Blanche's greatest strength is in coming up with cool concepts and ideas, think he must have one hell of an imagination!
|Posted by: LaurieGoulding Jan 13 2013, 10:26 PM|
|I've got a great idea for this competition... I just hope I get enough time to paint it before the deadline!|
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Jan 13 2013, 10:59 PM|
|Well, I'll try to come up with something for this. So many options, so little time....|
|Posted by: the damned artificer Jan 14 2013, 01:11 AM|
|Hmmm... I'll figure something out then|
|Posted by: Malika Jan 14 2013, 05:13 PM|
|If you are still thinking about those big fellows, check http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showtopic=134&view=findpost&p=22045795 post out!|
|Posted by: the damned artificer Jan 14 2013, 10:26 PM|
| Ohh that's cool Malika, but technically those rogue thunder warriors aren't a part of the crusade I guess but thanks for sticking up for my idea!.
Anyway I won't make a thunder warrior if it'll be disqualified by the mod of the competition, although I have to say I was getting really excited about doing one since this was the perfect excuse and I had some good ideas...
So if we can please get a definite answer from the mods on this I'd be glad as a thunder warrior would be my first priority on my "that would be cool for this competition" list
I take it the null maidens were there from day one too, as the black ships play a pretty important role in the maintenance of the imperium. That might be a possibility too. But would still be less cool than a proto astartes...
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 14 2013, 10:53 PM|
| If that's your favourite idea, then feel free dude! Definitive answer - yes you can!
I was simply commenting that the canon seems to suggest that they had served their purpose and had been discarded by the Emperor by that point in the timeline ...but we do know some survived. I'm sure at least one joined the fleet in some capacity!
...come to think of it - wasn't there mention in one of the stories that the first Space Marines used Thunder Armour too? I'm sure there was a bit in one story about some Legionaries standing as honour guard, wearing ceremonial Thunder Armour...?
|Posted by: the damned artificer Jan 14 2013, 11:13 PM|
| Awesome! Then that'll be the way to go it seems
And I haven't read about astartes using thunder armour anywhere, even though it is mentioned in previous fluff that the first founding chapters have suits in their armoury for ceremonial use (I guess as a homage to their proto astartes predecessors) in the 41st millenium
|Posted by: Gagoc Jan 14 2013, 11:51 PM|
| It has been clearly stated that the Legions fought in the Unification Wars, and that Mk II was only introduced shortly before the Great Crusade was launched.
So the Legions wore Thunder Armour en masse up until the Crusade Armour was introduced.
It's why Crusade Armour is Mk II armour and not Mk I.
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 15 2013, 09:14 AM|
| From my personal view, I don't think a Thunder Warrior would have made it onto the ships of the Great Crusade (at least, not a live one...), but as Gagoc notes, an Astartes Honour Guard or somesuch in Thunder Armour would be a perfect addition.
Ultimately, as Hyperion says, you should feel free to have fun and make the model that you want. You'll have a better chance of winning if the model is within theme, and the Moderating team have plenty of competitions tucked up their sleeves, so regardless of what you want to post, we'll get around to it eventually
Anyway, glad to see the competition's getting a good reception. I'm really looking forward to seeing what great stuff people have tucked away in their imaginations
In order to show how simple you can make your model, I thought I'd post up a teaser image of my entry along with the title of my background. Don't feel you need to post a teaser, but if you do, please go ahead.

| +++Mod vox active+++
I have clarified the rules for the competition, theme and prizes in the opening thread.
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 15 2013, 09:34 AM|
| ..Even as a silhouette I think your entry trumps mine Apologist
And I don't think anyone would object to seeing some kind of cool Thunder Warrior-esque Barbarian - please let your imagination run riot (.. with the exception of Bronies, Adenn )
|Posted by: Malika Jan 15 2013, 09:44 AM|
So this means the First Expedition still has to conquer the rest of the Sol system right? Or have they already done that? If it's the latter, we could also include characters from other places as well right?
Sorry for nitpicking, just trying to create some clarity since I've confused myself.
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 15 2013, 09:52 AM|
|Hmm. Initially, I'd pictured the theme as being simply those people gathered on Terra just before they hit the ships. However, since there's so much evocative material possible (Venusian manhounds, Ringers from Saturn and so forth) in the Sol system, let's say that we are restricted to the Compliance of the Sol System – no further.|
|Posted by: Malika Jan 15 2013, 10:55 AM|
| Meaning that http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showtopic=134 is even more relevant.
By the way, you mention Venesian manhounds? Where did you get that from, got more info?
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 15 2013, 11:09 AM|
Plucked from the ether – I've just made them up!
|Posted by: White Wolf Jan 15 2013, 12:10 PM|
| I'm in for the comp - I have an idea.....
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 15 2013, 05:44 PM|
Sounds like a rather interesting idea for a modelling project to me! Perhaps a result of dabbling with the human genome?
|Posted by: Malika Jan 15 2013, 05:53 PM|
|There are no wolves on Fenris...maybe this genetic deviation originated at Venus? (could be a funny tribute to Apologist's idea)|
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 15 2013, 06:52 PM|
| Exactly what I was thinking!
And we know that significant meddling with the human genome existed, thanks to the presence of Squats (which now officially exist again! HA! http://www.emoticonsfree.org/free-emoticons-sticking-out-tongue.html )
|Posted by: Adenn Jan 15 2013, 08:57 PM|
I might be making a thunder warrior soon for shiggles anyway, since i'll have the parts for one around soon. Probably not in time for this competition, though and i really don't have the time to think of something interesting to do, especially since pacific has so callously shot down my budding plans for the half-horse equine warriors of the hives of equestria.
|Posted by: Aventine Jan 16 2013, 10:11 AM|
|Posted by: Malika Jan 16 2013, 10:20 AM|
I know that Laurie mentioned that without the efforts of the original Great Crusade forum there wouldn't really have been that much stuff on the Horus Heresy by FW/BL. Now imagine if we all start making Thunder Warriors and Unification Wars stuff...
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 16 2013, 02:52 PM|
| so were the reason things got done.. hell yeah
i think unification wars would be amazing, thunder armour was a pain in the tooshie to convert, but would look good. lots of non stc vehicles. oooo joy
|Posted by: Malika Jan 16 2013, 02:55 PM|
|But then again, there were no actual Astartes during the Unification Wars, meaning this will be a hard thing to sell to GW/FW...|
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 16 2013, 03:12 PM|
| we need a sales pitch, and a vid like the teaser for the betrayal book with lots of cool stuff to set the scene. kinda like Torgue in borderlands 2.
*dark atmospheric music plays* In the Grim darkness of the far future, the Emperor of mankind (john connor) rose up and united mankind. His legions of Proto astartes battled against the techno barbarian tribes over ancient terra, *music changes to some kick ass double bass pedal blast beat fest metal* the battles were long and grueling, with the screams of the dying and EXPLOSIONS and TESTOSTERONE
sorry i couldnt help myself, that guy cracks me up.
ALSO what are the entries being judged on, is it capturing the feel of the era or is sculpting/painting etc still going to me the main thing that will be focused on??
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 16 2013, 03:18 PM|
| Yes it is an exciting prospect!
I think there is always a big draw to the mysterious, little known elements of the background - that spot was always previously held by the 30k universe, which was just a footnote describing long forgotten heroes and villains. Wonderful of course that its now being explained in detail (although as ADB said on one of his blog posts - not too much detail)
But yes I think Unification-era has the same draw to it, even if perhaps the premise isn't quite so evocative. Would love to carry on my own project for thunder warriors from that era but sadly just don't have the time these days! I'm hoping the forthcoming Gates of Antares (Rick Priestley's new baby) will have a load of future-human type miniatures which I can use as the antagonists for the unification era.
Anyway for this I think the focus of this comp is the first expedition, the beginnings of the great crusade and those individuals involved in it, so entries should try and reflect that as much as possible to fit with that theme. Although I can imagine something like a Thunder Warrior Barbarian, perhaps living as a pirate or mercenary on some old space station or asteroid field, might make an interesting modelling project.
|Posted by: Gagoc Jan 16 2013, 03:36 PM|
Actually Betrayal says the Legions fought during the Unification Wars, Malika. With actual Astartes.
I think this idea they didn't originated on a Wiki somewhere. I find it interesting so many people came to accept it as fact despite the vast majority of the background saying otherwise.
|Posted by: Der dunkle Apostel Jan 16 2013, 03:37 PM|
| im thinking word bearer, from terra. The reason why i asked if painting/modelling is going to be the deciding factor is because im going to try convert the mk2 armour from current plastics, so my entry isnt 'another forgeworld' mini, same mini, diff colour.
Tbh i may just change my mind at last min and do a kitty, ships mascot, ill call him jones.
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 16 2013, 04:05 PM|
Painting and modelling will probably add to it, but being a Golden Demon-level painter won't help if you've missed the theme of the competition.
The theme of the competition is 'The First Expedition' for a reason. It represents the dawn of a potential new golden age; a time of hope, and vision, and optimism. It's also inclusive, with the Emperor seeking to bring humanity together again, and dispel Old Night.
I'd like the entries to evoke that optimism, but beyond that, I hope that this method of deciding upon a winner will get everyone on the forum involved; whatever experience you have of contests, however skilled a modeller or painter you are.
Good luck, all – let's start that new Golden Age!

|Posted by: Demon2027 Jan 28 2013, 09:44 AM|
|I'm really looking foward to seeing what you guys have created. I would enter but I can't think of anything. Creative juices not flowing.|
|Posted by: Malika Jan 28 2013, 09:46 AM|
|I'm not that much of a modeller or painter, but I'd love to contribute to this competition. Maybe not with a submission or anything, but is there anyway I can help in here?|
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 28 2013, 03:17 PM|
| Guys (and gals?), please don't be discouraged from entering something because you don't think you'll win - the aim is just to have some fun creating a single mini (not too taxing!) that you might not otherwise do.
It can be anything, and there are lots of things that are thematic to that time frame (the start of the Great Crusade), for example:
Terran Imperial Army
Any Legionary in Mk2 armour - probably a similar colour scheme to post-Primarch but with a Legion number instead of a symbol? (eg: the First Legion - black armour, red helmet stripe, red 1 on shoulder - that would be kinda appropriate, wouldn't it?!)
A ship crewmember
A Sister of Silence (we don't have any evidence as to when they appeared)
A pre-Primarch named Legion (eg: War Hound; Dusk Raider; etc)
An Imperial Emissary (like the John Blanche image - with the eagle and big hat!)
An Enforcer and cyberhound
A pilot (I'm just listing FW LE minis now, aren't I?!)
A dead Eldar...
Loads of possibilities! Just pick your favourite random 40k/Necromunda/Confrontation mini and paint it up, then give it a little background for context! ('Having narrowly avoided death in the Pan-Pacific purges, Aleto Grif enlisted in the Imperial Army, 76th Terran')
|Posted by: AAN Jan 28 2013, 06:38 PM|
| I have finished a mini and I am ready to send you a pic.
Directly to your email or post it here?
Can I show it on the forum now or should it be revealed once the competition is over?

| Email all pics direct to me, and add a comment in this thread telling me you've done it (so I can keep track in case any emails are lost in the warp!)
When the competition ends, I'll post all the pics in their own thread.

|When do we have to. I'm going to start an imperial army officer for my Legion, could be perfect for this comp.|
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 29 2013, 06:59 PM|
|Posted by: Demon2027 Jan 29 2013, 10:03 PM|
| Well yeah you can direct me to the rules you posted on the first page
Febuary 14th eh, will there be extra points for a valentines theme
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Jan 30 2013, 12:16 AM|
| Quick question, does it have to be painted?
I have an idea and should soon have it built, and realistically can get it painted by the date but I thought i'd check.
|Posted by: Hyperion Jan 30 2013, 03:36 AM|
Yup! And even then you got the date wrong - it says 17th, not 14th!
@Lucius - that's the general idea, but if you haven't managed to paint it by the deadline you could still send in a pic and see what happens - people might think yours is the best entry in the competition even unpainted! ...maybe!
|Posted by: Pacific Jan 30 2013, 09:13 AM|
| Yes the more the merrier!
Although I can't confirm whether you would get bonus points for a Valentines day theme, please feel free to send pics of marines holding bouquets of flowers etc
|Posted by: Pettsy Jan 30 2013, 11:34 AM|
So the Pretty Marines are official?
I think my entry is going to be a late-rush job. As it always seems to be when I enter things like this. It's not a proper competition unless you're up til 4am trying to hit a deadline
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 30 2013, 12:26 PM|
|You've got three weeks – how rushed are you likely to be?|
|Posted by: Matus Jan 30 2013, 04:29 PM|
Is MK 3 armour too late for this, in fact are Legionaries with non-grey armour ok?
I was thinking of converting Chaplin Cassiuss into a Moriat. I think his armour is MK3 (but would not mind confirmation of that) and I was going to paint it Imperial Fist yellow, not the grey of the first expeditions, would this be ok as an entry?
|Posted by: Apologist Jan 30 2013, 04:47 PM|
| I want to re-emphasise that you can do whatever you like – the competition is designed to encourage people to have fun exploring the background of the 31st Millennium universe.
Mark III might be a little early, but there's no reason he can't be using experimental armour. Would the Legions have coloured armour? That's up to you to decide. You've got complete creative freedom over what you think is appropriate for the members of the First Expeditionary Fleet.
Remember that you can write a little bit of colour text to accompany your entry; it may well be that this helps explain certain modelling/painting choices you make to the forum members who'll be judging the contest.
|Posted by: Vinnie Jan 30 2013, 04:56 PM|
| Been unsure whether or not to enter this. Today I thought, "Screw it, I'm in"
I have no idea what I'm entering. It will NOT be a Marine... maybe.
|Posted by: Gagoc Jan 30 2013, 05:24 PM|
| Sorry Matus, but as mentioned in the bits guide, Chaplain Cassius is in Mk IV Maximus armour.
And Maximus was issued near the end of the Great Crusade.
|Posted by: Matus Feb 1 2013, 11:11 PM|
|Oops, well I made the model I was going to enter tonight, but it looks like I will have to pull his arms and backpack off. :-(|
|Posted by: AAN Feb 3 2013, 12:53 PM|
| I am in, it will be of course Death Guard related. Hyperion just received a mail from me.
|Posted by: AAN Feb 3 2013, 01:03 PM|
Are we really going to be that "rivet-counting"?
There is still a lot of open areas fluff wise...
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 3 2013, 01:21 PM|
Didn't you know, HH is all about the pedantry!!!
(That's why our most pedantic member now works for BL!)
I've just realised that the board email service doesn't allow attachments, so please send your entries to: astrohaggis AT yahoo DOT com
|Posted by: Magos Explorator Feb 3 2013, 04:26 PM|
I agree. Since it's voted on by board members, I wouldn't worry about it and just make you want, and the votes can decide what people think is best. My 0.02.
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 3 2013, 04:42 PM|
|Indeed. there'll always be the factor that some people will vote higher for something that sticks strictly to the aesthetic of the time and gets all the minutae correct, but it's worth having less exacting, perfectly detailed minis be in there, they're at a disadvantage but something particularly fabulous that fits the ideal, if not the details, would still be worth seeing and could do well.|
|Posted by: Will Wright Feb 3 2013, 05:25 PM|
| I'm in.
I was not planning on entering but while building another model the perfect entry got created as if my hands were possessed by the dark gods themselves.
|Posted by: Pacific Feb 3 2013, 07:23 PM|
| Just started building mine tonight!
Guys I'm sure you know the background pretty well, and so know not to submit a mk7 Space Shark marine with a Tyranid or Tau head-dress etc, but there is still a massive hole for your imagination to fill beyond correct number of rivets etc. Please let your imagination run riot.
On a separate note think it's definitely a better idea submitted all of the entries in secret and then only revealing them for voting - saves the problem we had last time on the old forum where someone (Iacton I believe?) submitted a Golden Daemon-esque standard model in the first week of the comp, no doubt resulting in a large number of people taking one look at it and then shelving their own entry
|Posted by: Matus Feb 3 2013, 09:33 PM|
|well I have two options, a quite heavily converted MK4 suit and the MK 3 suit from armour through the ages, with only a FW backpack as customisation. They are both air brush base coated and I'm planning on painting both at the same time, so I should have one model converted and painted to the best of my ability and one, more fullily appropriate painted to the best of my ability. Either way I'm in!|
|Posted by: Yvraith Feb 3 2013, 09:34 PM|
| I'm in too, I'll send you a message shortly Hyperion.
Hopefully it makes sense.
|Posted by: Will Wright Feb 4 2013, 03:01 AM|
| My entry is complete.
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 4 2013, 06:36 AM|
Plus, the aim of the competition is for people to enjoy the collective imagination of our members, not about winning.
If it seems apparent that people are reluctant to take part because they don't think they'll win, then I'll have to reconsider offering prizes in future competitions.
Hmm, maybe I'll put together a small honour marking for each competition, and anyone who takes part can add the relevant ones to their sig...
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 4 2013, 07:35 AM|
| I'm vaguely toying with starting this now. I don't have any of my marine/thunder warrior bits yet, but i had the slight revelation that i could probably make something convincingly Imperial Army.
Assuming i'm not too busy to actually work on it, i'll do my best to get something in before the deadline!
|Posted by: IronWarriorsVorax Feb 4 2013, 09:01 PM|
|So do we get bits from 2nd Edition 40K or the starter set?|
|Posted by: Will Wright Feb 4 2013, 09:12 PM|
| I have seen that done elsewhere on other sites where the sig gets banners and purity seals(ie Heresy Online)
But I do tend to agree with the late Vince Lombardi "Second Place is the first loser"
|Posted by: Pacific Feb 5 2013, 10:06 AM|
And after saying that I then go on to start painting a Mk4 helmet.. what a noob!
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 6 2013, 12:26 AM|
|Does this have to be specifically placed at right before the landing ships depart, or can we place our minis just a bit Prior to that event? Say, first 100 Imperial Army Trooper immediately after the culling?|
|Posted by: Apologist Feb 7 2013, 09:11 AM|
The theme is 'A member of the First Expedition – the first group of people to set off on the Great Crusade.'
Interpret it as you wish
My entry has been posted away to Hyperion. Looking forward to seeing what the group produces!
|Posted by: Pacific Feb 10 2013, 02:52 PM|
| I suppose there would be nothing to stop you entering a mini of a tearful wife, holding a hankie to her face and waving?
After several abortive attempts have finally finished mine! Now just to come up with some accompanying text..
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 10 2013, 04:12 PM|
| I... kind of love that idea, and feel i should forgo my current entry and make that instead.
So long as i can convincingly sculpt an aquila-embroidered hankie.
My entry is well in progress, although predictably, despite overcoming great difficulties in devising bitz combinations, fiddling with brass etch, scratchbuilding parts, and discovering parts i'd expected to be perfect didn't work requiring a complete rethink of half of the model, i am now halted in my progress, as i cannot find a rock. Outside, on the ground covered in rocks.
|Posted by: Malika Feb 11 2013, 08:38 AM|
|Don't forget your Volkite weapons everybody! They were the standard weapons for the Astartes before being replaced by the Bolter.|
|Posted by: Apologist Feb 11 2013, 01:29 PM|
| The shuttles are loading, ammunition stores are being checked, and fuel is being siphoned into the plasmaforges.
Less than a week to go, Expeditionaries – make sure you don't miss your boat!
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Feb 12 2013, 07:53 PM|
| How very appropriate a comment in relation to my entry
....I shouldn't have said that
|Posted by: Kwll Feb 13 2013, 09:19 PM|
| Right its been dispatched into the ether hopefully it will be received
Best photo could send under the circumstance as had to use tablet camera
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 14 2013, 11:56 AM|
I have just extended the deadline by 1 week. Vinnie pointed out to me that we have not been utilising our Facebook page adequately, so I've just posted the competition there too - the deadline extension is to give people enough time to enter.
(If anyone wants to amend their entry, please feel free, up to the deadline).
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 14 2013, 12:44 PM|
| Huzzah! been too busy to work on mine, was likely going to miss the deadline by a couple of days.
Got delayed for 4 days in the hunt for a suitable rock.
|Posted by: Yvraith Feb 14 2013, 08:54 PM|
| Wait, we have a facebook page.
When did this happen?
|Posted by: Lord Caldera Feb 15 2013, 02:51 AM|
|Sweet, sweet extension! I've had no time at all to work on this while getting ready for an upcoming tournament, thanks Ben!|
|Posted by: Kwll Feb 15 2013, 11:08 AM|
|Facebook page prey tell is there a nice link to it or do we have to hunt it down|
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 15 2013, 11:28 AM|
|Posted by: AAN Feb 17 2013, 04:13 PM|
What am I missing?
(Since I do not have (and probably never will) a Facebook account.)
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 17 2013, 07:10 PM|
Nothing! The same stuff will be posted on here - the FB page is just to try and capture more HH enthusiasts.
|Posted by: Apologist Feb 22 2013, 08:55 PM|
| The fuel lines are detaching, the troops are safely confined to barracks, and the final checks have begun. A few stragglers, adventurers and starry-eyed idealists are still sneaking aboard the ships of the First Expedition.
Don't miss out! Last three days to submit your entry!
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 22 2013, 09:34 PM|
|Well, i have him undercoated! . To work, captain procrastination!|
|Posted by: the damned artificer Feb 22 2013, 11:38 PM|
|Ahh rats... I have not been able to finish my entry due to real life being annoyingly in the way... I will try and compete next time instead|
|Posted by: Ahriman's Aide Feb 23 2013, 12:59 AM|
Same here sadly. Working on the Ships list has taken up most of my free time, that and the model components I ordered still haven't arrived yet.
However it's not a total loss, I might be getting a copy of the Mark of Calth for my troubles...
|Posted by: Vinnie Feb 23 2013, 11:57 AM|
| *sips coffee and clicks on competiton thread simultaneously*
*dives into bitz box*
|Posted by: Pacific Feb 23 2013, 01:10 PM|
| The episode of the Simpsons where Homer tries to make his own BBQ grill springs to mind - is it going to be something that looks like the Katamari?
Really looking forward to seeing what people have come up with for this comp!
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 23 2013, 03:20 PM|
| LE GRILLE? WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!
So i'm almost done painting, little rushed as it's been one night but screw it i should get something passable in by the deadline!
|Posted by: AAN Feb 23 2013, 03:23 PM|
| So when is the competition going life?
I committed mine a while ago and I really want to Show my mini on my Website etc.
I have to say that the -not Show your mini- condition had the contrary effect on me - it did not encourage me, I had to force myself to participate...
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Feb 23 2013, 08:11 PM|
|Sent! I finally get that background piece finished, only took me nearly two weeks|
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 23 2013, 08:33 PM|
| @AAN - I understand your point, but there needs to be a level playing field for the competition. I can certainly empathise with wanting to show off a new mini but, for the sake of a few weeks, is it really that much of a problem? Patience man...
Remember that tomorrow is the deadline for entries to be submitted to me at:
astrohaggis AT yahoo DOT com
Given that we didn't specify a time zone, I'll accept Hawaiian time from anyone (which gives the Aussies almost an extra 24 hours!)
...so hurry up Vinnie! You're a Mod now, and TFE has standards...
...AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA, just kidding!
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Feb 23 2013, 08:47 PM|
| Oh, you're astrohaggis, my bad
I thought it was Apologist.
|Posted by: Apologist Feb 23 2013, 08:53 PM|
|God no, I wouldn't have such an embarrassing email address!|
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 23 2013, 08:58 PM|
|Posted by: Adenn Feb 24 2013, 12:23 AM|
| Right, entry submitted!
Terrible pictures, rushed paintjob and horrible colour text but i did what i could not written anything in about 4 years, haha, but it's worth putting some in!
Looking forward to seeing what everyone else came up with.
|Posted by: Lord Commander Lucius Feb 24 2013, 02:20 PM|
| I know the comp has only been closed for about 2 and a half hours but when are we gonna get the entries?
I second Addenn's last sentence.
|Posted by: Lord Caldera Feb 24 2013, 07:46 PM|
|Entry sent, finally. A little too close to the wire for my taste though...|
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 24 2013, 08:07 PM|
The competition isn't closed yet! Hawaii time doesn't hit midnight for several hours yet.
Just to confirm, I have so far received entries from:
Lord Commander Lucius
If you don't see your name on the list, and you tried to email me, contact me by PM to let me know.
PS. Come on Vinnie...!
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 25 2013, 01:02 AM|
|Hawaii time is now 3pm (at GMT -10) - so you still have 11 hours to submit your entries!|
|Posted by: Hyperion Feb 25 2013, 04:22 AM|
| Ok folks, the voting thread is now up: http://z13.invisionfree.com/The_First_Expedition/index.php?showtopic=323&st=0#entry22051850
If anyone is still working on their last second entry, you have a final 8 hours!
|Posted by: Matus Mar 1 2013, 10:13 PM|
|Ah, I did email you a week or so back, but I've only just seen this post. It's too late now and it would not have placed well but I just wanted to show willing. Ill try again next time :-)|
