Title: Competition 1 The First Expeditionary
Description: Painting/modelling contest rules

Apologist - January 11, 2013 11:34 AM (GMT)
The launch of the First Expeditionary Fleet was a grand affair, presided over by the Emperor himself, and involving the launch of thousands of ships to explore, reclaim and conquer the worlds of the galaxy in the name of mankind.

Among those who looked skywards were the brave soldiers and sailors of the Imperial Army and Navy, countless supernumeraries, toting-men and quartermasters, and of course members of the twenty Legions of the Astartes.

From fresh-faced recruits to hard-bitten mercenary captains, the First Expedition represented the cream and steel of humanity, drawn from Terra, Luna and Mars. It was truly a compact of heroes, drawing its fuel from every natstat, nom-people and hive-city of the nascent Imperium.

This competition is designed for you to test your imagination and produce a miniature, converted and painted to the best of your ability, to represent a single member of the First Expedition. This may be a starship pilot, a brute savage herded into the Army, a restless aristocrat, an Astartes warrior in early mark armour, one of the rating dregs of the enginarium, a petty functionary, or any of the other hundreds and thousands of humans on board the ships of the First Expedition.

+++
The Theme
A member of the First Expedition the first group of people to set off on the Great Crusade.

The peoples of Terra, Luna and Mars have expanded outwards through the Sol System, rendering all the planets, dwarf planets and satellites Compliant to the Imperial Truth. All Hail the Master of Mankind!

While this does put a few limits on what you can do no Primarchs have yet been discovered, for example we hope you'll look upon this as a chance to exercise your imaginations. There are plenty of possibilities, ranging from Legionnaires from Legions as yet without a name, to the Old Hundred Imperial Army, to the more esoteric travellers, hangers-on and petty functionaries.

Most important of all have fun!

To enter the competition
1) Post your intention to enter on this thread there's no need to go into detail on what you intend to make, but if you'd like to, please go ahead.

2) Only models previously unposted on the noosphere (the internet in general) are eligible for entry into this contest we'd like to encourage you to paint that model you've always wanted to do, but have never quite had the impetus.

3) Photographs should be submitted to Hyperion at: astrohaggis AT yahoo DOT com If you're struggling to get a good clean picture, in proper focus, try following the suggestions laid out in this tutorial.

4) Entries can be submitted from now until midday (12 noon) Sunday the 24th of February 2013. Entries received after this date will have missed the boats and be stranded on Terra. ;)

5) In the event of a ruckus, or voting shenanigans, the Enforcers will be deployed. Please treat this competition as the bit of fun it is.

6) Any single model may be entered as long as it fits the theme of the contest. This includes different scales (Epic and Inquisitor, for example), complete scratch-builds, and non GW models.

7) Groups of models are only allowed if they are usually fielded as such (e.g. an Epic unit stand), or if one model is clearly a secondary element (e.g. a weapon bearer, familiar or servant). These secondary models must be incorporated onto the same base. Don't worry if you've got a squad or diorama in mind we've got plenty of competitions lined up.

8) While not necessary, we would like to encourage you to write a little colour text about your model try and evoke his or her (or its?) character and life story in a paragraph or two of text (max 500 words). This can be posted on this thread whenever you like (so there's something for you to do if you've gone ahead and got your model completed), or can be submitted in secrecy to Hyperion.

+++
Glittering prizes
At the end date, we will post all of the entries in a new thread for the members of the forum to vote on which one they think best fulfils the competition theme. Voting will be open for one week. In the event of a tie, Hyperion will act as WARMASTER and make a personal choice.

The winner of the common vote will receive a hardback Horus Heresy novel of their choice from Black Library, some classic Marine parts from Rogue Trader and second edition Warhammer 40,000, and the plaudits of the forum in the form of their model being placed in The First Expedition Mausoleum, for the delectation and delight of all.

The winner of the best colour text, voted on by the members, will receive a small mystery prize.

So, what are you waiting for, troops you've got six weeks to get to the shuttles! Good luck!

Edit - deadline extended by 1 week!

Stupid question, but does it have to be a single model, or can it be more then one on a same base or scenic base?

Sorry Ahriman's Aide; I'm afraid I'm still getting used to the Moderator powers, and accidentally edited your post while trying to reply to it. If you'd like to re-edit your post, feel free! (Apologist)

Malika - January 11, 2013 12:03 PM (GMT)
This is going to be really awesome isn't it?

I'd love to see more (late) Unification Wars / (early) Great Crusade stuff!

Sadly enough I won't be joining though, the lack of time, money and a job has that effect on a guy, but I' definitely keeping my eyes on this one!

By the way, a little nitpick: was there even such a thing as the Imperial Navy? I mean, wasn't it just part of the Imperial Army, until Guilliman separated all the branches?

Mortarion - January 11, 2013 12:09 PM (GMT)
yeah count me in :)

I have an idea forming....

Pacific - January 11, 2013 12:29 PM (GMT)
Excellent stuff, I already have some ideas and look forward to posting an entry! :)

Kwll - January 11, 2013 12:49 PM (GMT)

The contest is for a single model, but as long as it's in theme, everything's fair game. I think a mini diorama could look nice :)

You got me I just wanted to emphasise that you can do any member of the expeditionary fleet, and star-sailors seemed an evocative image.

Tarik Torgaddon - January 11, 2013 01:27 PM (GMT)
I have really missed these contests, they were always such a great way the get inspiration to create something awesome.

I'm thinking of going for either an AM magos, a primarch or a thunder warrior.

Malika - January 11, 2013 01:32 PM (GMT)
By the way, this theme might also be very cool to a fiction contest. Would be nice to see very optimistic 30k universe stories! :D

Der dunkle Apostel - January 11, 2013 04:06 PM (GMT)
i got all excited then realised, im not the best painter, my sculpting isnt that good, and some of you guys are just amazing, so i decided i shall just enjoy some of the amazing stuff you guys will enter. :)

Apologist - January 11, 2013 04:32 PM (GMT)
Aw, that'd be a shame you should enter; at the very least you'll have a cool miniature to add to your collection :)

Der dunkle Apostel - January 11, 2013 04:43 PM (GMT)
I have a few ideas but nothing that really gets my creative juices going :/ Though them 1st and 2nd ed marine bits are mighty tempting... *drools*

*INSPERATIONAL BOLT OF LIGHTNING TO THE HEAD*

Im in :D

Brother Handro - January 11, 2013 05:19 PM (GMT)
Good on you Der Dunkel Apostel! It's all about taking part on this board. Flagbearers for the Crusade into a dark (30k-)ignorant universe and all that! :D

Which means even tho' I have no hope of winning it, I'm going to be entering too.

Right now I'm thinking a Dusk Raider, or an Imperial Army grunt. In fact, I might do both, with the soldier looking up in wide-eyed awe, having never seen an Astartes up close before...yesss, I see it now...

Malika cool idea about the fiction contest, I second the motion. Still wainting for the results of the last one, mind. :P

Wulox - January 11, 2013 06:09 PM (GMT)
I'm in! Will have to get thinking of what to enter though! :P

Der dunkle Apostel - January 11, 2013 07:02 PM (GMT)

What about combining the two plans?

I need to be in a more mellow state of mind though before I'll organise this. Unemployment is a *&$%@

Pettsy - January 11, 2013 07:26 PM (GMT)
Can we include a paragraph of background about our entries? Would be nice to add a bit of character to this First Expedition you've created :)

I'm totally taking part in this either way.

I'd like that very much. Posting the colour text in this thread will be a great way to keep everyone's motivation up, and I'll be sure to copy them over to the voting thread.

In fact, I like the idea enough that I'll pony up a prize for the Moderator's favourite colour text :)

* Unless you are mounting the squad on a bike, so they make up a triangle shape like a motorcycle display team? :P

But, but...Apologist said on the previous page that anything is fair game, as long as it's in theme!? :(

Can we have some clarification from our red-named overlords? :P

I think we should keep it to just a single figure for this competition - we can do a diorama competition another time. Making this one a single figure only keeps the playing field level, isn't too big a task, and doesn't stop you doing the other cool ideas you've got. :)

Apologist - January 12, 2013 02:08 AM (GMT)
My (well-named!) apologies for any confusion caused. As Hyperion suggests, let's keep it to a single figure for this competition. I promise that the next contest will allow a mini diorama, in case you've got started. :)

Lord Caldera - January 12, 2013 02:54 AM (GMT)
Hoo-ah, gentlemen! Great way to jumpstart the new home of the Heresy!

Ahriman's Aide - January 12, 2013 08:19 AM (GMT)
This might be off topic, but is there a image of the 1st Expedition 1 and Diamond symbol from the banner I can turn into a decal? I'm thinking of doing the Expedition Standard, and it would be much easier then doing it freehand.

Hyperion - January 12, 2013 08:31 AM (GMT)
I've put together a decal sheet (in US Letter and A4 sizes) but it doesn't have a large icon for a banner - I'll add one.

Bear in mind I've tried to approximate useful sizes, but haven't had a chance to test it yet, so the transfer sheets are still in development.

IronWarriorsVorax - January 12, 2013 04:32 PM (GMT)
I think I will enter my Warsmith in the competition. :)

the damned artificer - January 12, 2013 06:14 PM (GMT)
Count me in, this sounds like fun and I have a few ideas that hopefully will give birth to an actual product in the end :D and there's nothing like a great deadline to get things going :D

So what are you going to enter?

the damned artificer - January 13, 2013 08:19 PM (GMT)
I'm currently thinking of doing some sort of character from the remembrancer order, but it might be something else.

What is the guidelines for theme, is it supposed to be early crusade only? (as that kinda leaves out the remembrancers as they wer only allowed in later on) And what is the stance on entering something that would technically be pre-crusade like something big and brutal sporting a lot of lightnings?

:D

Malika - January 13, 2013 08:26 PM (GMT)
The Remembrancer Order might not have been around yet, but it wouldn't surprise me if Rememberancers (poets, journalists, photographers, writers, etc) were already following the Crusade.

As for your other suggestion, I'm not running this competition, and I'm only guessing on what you are suggesting here. But the big brutal fellow sporting a lot of lightnings could be done, if he somehow managed to survive the Unification Wars. It's all about the story of the figure I think...
:ph43r:

...to represent a single member of the First Expedition.

Although we will be using the First Expeditionary Fleet at different time points as a sandbox for future events, the general theme of this competition is the time point at the very beginning of the Great Crusade, just after the end of the Unification Wars, as the Emperor takes his Legions outwards from Sol for the first time.

It's a time of hope, courage, honour, etc ...just like our move to our new forum! (...aggressive expansionism, xenophobia, genetic manipulation, ...er...)

Er, no. The few who survived the Unification Wars did not then go on to participate in the Great Crusade - the Emperor had already created his Space Marines by then, and discarded the last Thunder Warriors (as mentioned in The Outcast Dead).

That might still be debatable. I mean, I would imagine that many people would try to get on the ships to go on the Crusade. Those who survived the Unification Wars might try to hitch a ride on one of those ships. It wouldn't be too difficult to imagine that I guess. Doubt the fellow would become a major character or anything, since he'd most likely try to be as incognito as possible, I mean...the bodyguard model converted by John Blanche could be such a survivor (if it were M30 or something). ;)

EDIT: point is that not everybody who left Terra on the Crusade was actually interested to serve the Emperor in this Crusade. Many would simply be immigrants of a sorts who seek to leave the Sol system looking for new opportunity.

Absolutely love that conversion! Think some of John Blanch's stuff is great, especially his chaos-type creations. They are very minimalistic, if that makes any sense, and manage to convey a very strong sense of danger without going overboard with appendages/accessories.

Malika - January 13, 2013 09:26 PM (GMT)
Which is quite ironic, coming from Blanche, since his artwork (to me at least) seems to be quite the opposite of minimalistic, like his Sister of Battle

Pacific - January 13, 2013 09:36 PM (GMT)
Yes, very true! :)

Although I've always thought Blanche's greatest strength is in coming up with cool concepts and ideas, think he must have one hell of an imagination!

I've got a great idea for this competition... I just hope I get enough time to paint it before the deadline! :D
