Bellatrix awoke from her deep sleep with a start. She looked around the room frantically. Where was she? What was she doing here? Who was she? In that momentary lapse of reason she became another person all together. She was no longer Bellatrix Black, she was a scared little girl in a foreign place. This of course all happened within a few seconds because soon enough her eyes adjusted to the darkness and she came back to her senses. She was in her room and it was the middle of the night. Everyone was asleep and the world seemed calm, but there was a terrible turmoil going on within the eldest Black girl.

She quickly shot out of her bed and covered herself with her fur, floor length coat. This coat had been a gift from her mother for her sixteenth birthday, among many other things. The coat was black with brown spots and had been flown in from France. It was fur on the inside and the out and extremely luxurious. Bellatrix used it to cover her silk nighty. This was no normal nighty, however. It was only mid-thigh length and had a split at that. The bottom and the neckline were trimmed with lace and the body of the piece was the softest silk. Of course, it was died black with deep purple lace. She slipped her shapely feet into a matching pair of stilettos and pulled the coat closed around her. She stuck her wand in her pocket and left the common room without much ado. She was pretty sure she hadn’t woken anyone.

She began walking through the corridors, not really sure why or where she was going. She simply knew that she had to move. If she stayed still for too long she would turn out like her mother, in a loveless marriage and a terrifyingly monotonous life. Now, perhaps this crazy thinking was due in part to her being half asleep but it was more accurate to say that she was running from her problems. She was desperately trying to escape becoming a housewife, but then again the foremost thing on her mind was marriage. She refused to let herself live the meaningless existence of a home-maker, but she knew that she simply had to get married. It was her duty after all. It was expected of her. It was what she had to do.

The click of her heels against the cold, stone floor echoed through the empty, dark corridors. Soon she had to take out her wand and use the Lumos charm to even be able to see where she was going. This castle still amazed her with how pervasive it was. It was ever-changing and seemed to be always hiding something. She didn’t have time to think about Hogwarts right now though. She was on a mission. She wasn’t sure what that mission was, but she knew she was on one. Her steps quickened and her stride lengthened. Her hair flew behind her in the gentle breeze that she was creating with her jogging pace.

Clack, clack, clack. Her heals picked up even more speed and she was in a dead sprint by this point. She looked like she was after someone. The look on her face wasn’t fear. It was determination. It was pride mixed with worry. It could be seen that she was thinking about something, something very important.

Bella’s feet seemed to be on their own path at this point. It was their world and she was just living in it at this point. There was something drawing her towards the Astronomy Tower. It was like the pull of gravity acting on her without her really noticing it. She was simply a pawn in this game of life. NO! She was no pawn! She was the queen! Soon enough, she was at the entrance of the Astronomy Tower and before she could stop herself her hands opened the door and she climbed the stairs to the top. She was no longer in control. She was but a passenger.

The Astronomy tower had never been a place of comfort for her, but for some reason it was on this cold night. The chill did not escape her but she was hardly fazed by it. The whipping of the wind outside gave the stairwell an ominous feel and the darkness of the night only added to her anger. Why did it have to be so dark? What right did it have to be so damn dark?

Soon enough Bellatrix let the coat drop to her sides and it was flapping around her as she took the stairs two at a time. There was something at the top of the Astronomy Tower and it was pulling her there. She had to get there. She had to. Her heart began racing and when she finally reached the top she was out of breath slightly. She raced to the balcony ledge and grabbed it like it was about to float away. Her momentum pushed her torso out into the open air and for just a second her feet came off the ground. To an outsider it might have looked like she wanted to leap off the balcony, but had stopped just short of doing so. This was not the case though. This was where she was supposed to be. Why wasn’t near as clear however. She looked up and immediately saw the Gemini constellation. Directly over her head was the star Pollux. Her grandfather. This was the reason she had been pulled to this place. This was the reason she was there.

“Paw Paw Pollux please help me.” Bellatrix prayed to her ancestor. She needed some guidance. She needed some assurance.

“I know I have to marry him, but he will not make me a pet! He will not turn me into my mother. He will not take from me what I have grown within myself!”

If she were a weaker woman she would have admitted to the tears that were streaming down her cheek; but instead she wiped her eyes like something had flown into them. She traced the constellation that her grandfather was named after over and over and finally a scream burst forth from her mouth. It was inaudible and didn’t form a word, but it was enough. It was enough to symbolize how she felt inside. She didn’t know whether to be mad at her family for making her marry or at Rodolphus for thinking he could tame her. She was a lioness and she would never be made into a housecat.

Bellatrix threw her head back and cursed the night sky in futility. She was upset and alone and angry and confused. It was a complex relationship of emotions working inside of her and one that had finally reached its boiling point. Her cup runneth over and not in a good way.
