She screwed up. It had been a while since she had messed up on the job. She was going to get it for this… She’d gotten her target, at least. She’d killed him and his soul was on it’s way to her master. But she had been caught in the act.

The guards were surely looking for her now; the hooded woman with the violin. Fortunately she had also been masked at the time, so they didn’t have much more description than that. If she left her hood and mask down they may not notice her right away, but she’d have to be careful. Lay low for a while.

It would have been preferable to leave the city but with the murder the guards were more than likely watching the gates. And Yukiro had refused to help her out when he’d come to collect the soul. So she was stuck.

Keeping her violin hidden under her cloak and being careful not to do anything to draw the attention of the guards, Raven walked through the crowd of people in the square. Despite it being Winter now it was still quite busy. She wasn’t going anywhere in particular. Just walking. Just making sure the guards didn’t get the chance to get a good look at her. Blending into the sea of faces.

Hopefully no one would notice her.

Being in Goldbridge again wasn’t a joyous occasion, but he needed to be here anyway. His brothers had ultimately decided on Mapleshore as their home, but now they needed money to pay for a home. Not only that, but this home would have to house three full-grown men. On top of that, Xavier looked forward to at least building a barn for some horses; they would need transportation after all.

Xavier was decked out in his gear, bounding along the crowded streets in search of some work. The last time he got a job, it was over in the poorer area of town, where thugs and other equally shady characters hung around. Hopefully someone would need something done, preferably something big that would result in a large pay.

Xavier never realized money was that important and needed until he looked at the prices for homes and assorted buildings back in Mapleshore. That carpenter was ridiculous, five thousand gold for a mere shack. A shack! Whether it was the cushy life of his old home surfacing or not, Xavier found it ridiculous to pay that much money for a place that could barely hold one person, let alone three.

And the upgrade cost for that, outrageous! Another ten thousand for that as well! It was cheaper to buy the barn and sleep in that instead! The merc sighed and scratched at his beard in frustration. Money, money, money…bah! Now was one of those times he wished he had left the family behind on better terms, he could at least go back and grovel for coins. But even then he wouldn’t do that.

Xavier Chaput was no begger.

So there he was, walking through the city when a shout sounded.

”An accomplice, get him!”

Suddenly the street was swarming with city guards, and they were all heading straight for him. Without even wanting to stop and ask what was wrong, the merc fled. It quickly became a wild chase through the streets. Despite the fact that the guards, you know, lived here, Xavier easily and quickly evaded them. He used people and assorted items to slow them down, he slipped down alleys, scaled the side of buildings, and leapt across rooftops.

Still not knowing why he was being chased, Xavier found it quite fun at the same time. He was always one for the chase, and a spontaneous one like this was exciting! Somehow he managed to lose the guards all together. He never stopped moving though, moving swiftly through the crowds amid the center square. Wrapping himself up more in his cloak, the hooded man kept his head down, and pretended to walk with a small limp.

He would hold his hand out to people, asking them for a coin or two in a creaky voice. Guards ran past as a rather attractive woman turned him down, telling him to get a job or something. But it worked, his small ruse had worked. ’Idiots’ he chuckled to himself.

It was too cold, far too cold. Raven hated the cold, coming from the desert. Yes, it was cold at night in the sandy wasteland but Raven had grown up on the fiery mountain of her master, where it was hot all the time. The brief freezing nights of the desert she could deal with, even if she was uncomfortable. This damn snow and constant, biting cold was ridiculous.

She really wanted to put her hood up, keep her ears from freezing and keep a bit warmer, but right now that really wasn't a good idea... She also had her hair tied back since she had been working, so she couldn't use her thick curls to keep her ears warm.

She kept her head down as she spotted guards running by, weaving through the crowd, but she stopped short as she came close to running into a cloaked man. He walked with a slight limp and was begging for coins. Raven frowned a bit, holding up a hand and shaking her head. "I'm sorry, sir, I have none to spare." she told him softly, voice holding just a slight bit of a desert accent. She made to move on, not wanting to stand in one place for too long.

Unfortunately one of of the sharper guards happened to glance their way. He recognized the man they had just been chasing... and he was with a woman. She wore a cloak and the guard caught a glimpse of her weapons through the crowd. Her sword was black with two blue feathers hanging off of the hilt. Yes, that was the one they were looking for.

"Over there! They're over there!" Raven looked to see the guard pointing right at her, other guards quickly spotting her as well. Shit. Without a second's hesitation she took off, ducking around people as she ran through the crowd. She quickly pulled her mask back on as she ran, not wanting anyone to get a good look at her face. She'd like to be able to come here again to play for money.

She came to some market stand with a cart next to it and leapt up, bouncing from the cart to the top of the stand to a window over it. From there she scrambled to the roof then just ran as fast as her legs could take her, easily jumping the gaps between buildings. That managed to slow the guards some, at least, since they weren't as confident about making the jump as she was. As she ran a sudden thought occurred to her.

Why had the guard said they?

Well crap! Spotted again! Without even thinking about who "they" were, Xavier turned away from the woman he was begging to and ran. Pushed his way back through the crowd to lose his pursuers, again. He didn't dare look back to see if he was being followed, he most likely was! But ah, he did enjoy the chase. Chasing things and being chased, exhilarating stuff! Nothing would stop him today, he was like a eight-legged horse, able to run twice as fast as normal.

He ducked into an alleyway and without a moment's hesitation, began to scale the wall of a building. He used protruding stones and windows as footholds to climb up the wall and haul himself to the very top. Once up there, he took off across the rooftops, bouncing over buildings like a rabbit, never once seeming to stop. He merely looped around though so he could be behind his pursuers, and they had lost him from there.

One or two guards had made it to the rooftops, and they were searching everywhere for him, carefully treading about as to not fall. Rolling his eyes, Xavier slipped past them and made his way back to the streets, this time making it a bigger point to try and hide within the crowd.

Now that he could think freely again, he did have to wonder, who was the "they" they were looking for? When they had found him that second time, he was begging from that really pretty girl….

Hm.

The masked musician wasn't as lucky as the mysterious hooded man. She almost managed to lose the guards chasing her but then a few popped up onto the rooftop in front of her. Wonderful.

And this is what happens when you let yourself get spotted. she silently scolded herself as she slid to a stop, turning only to be faced with more guards. Eyes narrowing a bit she stood ready, gaze flicking from soldier to soldier. She wasn't about to give up... but they likely weren't either.

"You're under arrest for the murder of Harris Greyson!" Oh yeah, like she couldn't have guessed. "Surrender or we'll take you in by force!"

Her voice was calm as she replied, cool and with a tone of challenge.

"Come and get me, then."

"Don't let her get the violin!"

Raven whipped out her sword just in time to block the incoming blade of the man to her right, countering with a stab that would have killed him if he hadn't been wearing armor. But she wasn't quite strong enough to force her blade through it. The rest of them didn't hesitate to attack either, the ringing of steel clashing echoing through the air.

It drew a few glances from people down on the streets but most could not tell where it was coming from, likely guessing it was just noise from a nearby forge. Most of them couldn't tell the difference between the steady hammering of a blacksmith and the uneven ring of battle.

It was just as well. She unfortunately had the attention of the guards, but if she could avoid the attention of the people, that would be lovely. She was rather outnumbered, though, as the ones that had been chasing the other man joined their companions to attempt to kill or capture the murderess.
