There is one main city known as The House of Cards. Within the main city there are four smaller districts (Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds), each feeding into a main town square where all restaurants, shops, markets, nightlife, and other communal spaces are located. Each district is responsible for the overall quality of life in the city, and each has its duties.
Spades: factories, steel mills and coal
Hearts: they are the hedonists, the creators of the arts
Clubs: the military, and those responsible for the protection of the entire city
Diamonds: the intellects and unbiased peacekeepers
The District of Spades is governed by the humans, and is known for its steel mills and coal factories. The factories provide the rest of the cities with the materials to build their homes and buildings. They also are the recipients of Coalwood’s raw coal, and they refine it, turning it into a usable product. The governors are fair, but hard working and demands that every citizen labor for the good of the district by the age of sixteen. The people living here are generally hard-working, they have a sense of determination and work with their hands.
The District of Hearts is the most elitist of them all, and is ruled by the condescending fist of the vampire governors. The Queen of Hearts is their voice, and she makes her presence known wherever she goes. This district is known for its beauty, appreciation for art, music, literature, and pristine buildings. Most are wealthy, and live in large homes or penthouse-like apartments. There is a huge disparity between the wealthy and the poor, which the Queen decides to ignore, sometimes casting them out into the public square and they are starting to rebel. During the day, the district is shielded by a dome that covers that entire area, wall to wall, filtering the UV light and allowing vampires to at least travel from place to place, though the effects do not last more than 15 minutes at a time.
The citizens of Hearts are sometimes described as Grecian, and possess some sort of extraordinary gift, seeing as the Queen wishes to breed a race of only talented people. The Queen, by law, cannot deny anyone entrance or residence in her district, but she openly welcomes talented vampires, and H.provectus. All others are welcomed begrudgingly.
The District of Clubs is ruled by the lycans and is the main headquarters of the four cities’ military, and the largest prison, Malstead. The lycans’ duty to the four districts is to provide military protection and organize attacks when necessary. The Clubs governors are quick to corporal punishment and believe that physical labor is the only way to work the evil out of a man or beast. Most of the sentences carried out in the district require physical labor, working to build the military fortresses. Sometimes sentences are carried out in the District of Spades, working in the mills and factories. There is a strong relationship between the Clubs and the Spades, even one that is only known to a few. The Spades have a secret deal made that if any man of exceptional build and strength arises, he is somehow convicted and sent to the lycans where they may offer him a choice: immortality as a lycan or a life sentence.
Many of the citizens of Clubs are ex-convicts or those that were wrongly accused. Clubs is also home to many drifters attempting to find work in the cities. Those that work in the military as well as their families, live in the district in small, idealized towns that seem like oases in the middle of the grease and grime.
The District of Diamonds, governed by H.provectus
, is the capital of the land and where universal laws are passed. In the district’s main capital building, is a perfect square table in which either the King or Queen of each government is required to attend a bi-annual meeting, set on the solstice of each year, to discuss issues and to pass major legislature. The Diamond government is unbiased and will sacrifice anything for the truth. Their role in supporting the districts is intellect, and unbiased wisdom.
The people of Diamonds are fair, and understand what it means to lead a balanced life. They do not overload on any one task or aspect of life, and balance family, work, leisure, pleasure and other areas of life fairly. Many of these citizens possess great charm and appeal, in addition to their heightened senses and abilities, tending to compliment to the upper echelon of Hearts.
Drifters are anyone that lives outside the main city walls and in the Wasteland areas. They are not normally welcomed in the cities, and while there is certainly forced interaction, most only travel to the districts to trade or to work. Drifters are generally thought of as dangerous, but in reality are simply people trying to make a living. Drifters can consist of all four races, though it is very uncommon to see an H.provectus
living outside the city’s walls.
In the far reaches of the Wastelands, there are small factions of lawless humans, vampires, lycans, and a few H.provectus that were greatly affected by the radiation. Some of these beings have physical deformities, and most die young due to unchecked radiation poisoning, and adverse genetic mutations. They inter-mix their races, vampires drink human blood, and though these rebels are small in size, they are very strong. They have attacked the main city before, and their ultimate goal is to take down the four monarchies, revenging their ancestors that were initially shunned from civilization due to their appearance and contamination.

Humans have all the same features as those of the past. They are mortal, age at a normal rate, with women usually outlasting men. They are still vulnerable to the same flesh wounds, and various means of injuring oneself. Humans are no different than they were one thousand years ago.
Vampires are an immortal race, their aging process ceasing the moment they are transformed through the V-Virus (the scientists that isolated this strand were not exceptionally creative). Transformation happens when a sire bites a fledgling, and the fledgling feeds on its sire's blood. The exchange of blood enables the transformation: a painful process as the fledgling's metabolism changes, its canines grow an additional half inch, and the cells adjust to accommodate a dietary addition. The virus affords vampires greater strength, as well as increased healing, speed, agility, and senses. When feeding, or on extreme alert, many vampires' eyes turn an electric light blue, a reaction to the V-Virus. They are vulnerable to sunlight, their skin burning upon contact with UV radiation, possibly leading to being burned alive, as well as decapitation, piercing of the heart and the lycan virus. The V-Virus and the L-Virus cannot mix or it will kill the creature. In addition, vampires cannot feed on blood alone, there is not enough protein, and nutrients to sustain their bodies. While they are not aging, their cells still perform meiosis, but only their somatic cells (body cells, which excludes their sperm/eggs), and require additional nutrients, which they get through normal food.
Vampires are able to reproduce without biting via a male vampire impregnating a human, or H.provectus female. The virus is transferred through the sperm and the offspring will inherit the traits of the father. The child is born through traditional manners, and will age until it is formerly sired (exchange of blood with another vampire). Since it is illegal for a vampire and an H.provectus to have a child, no one has ever seen the results, though it is speculated that the child would have overwhelming strength, senses, speed and agility.
FLEDGLINGS: These are vampires that have not yet been sired. Their powers are greatly diminished from their vampire parents, presenting with characteristics mostly found in a Homo provectus. The actual strength, depends on the parentage of the mother: whether she has supernatural blood in her history or not, the only exception being a female vampire, which cannot conceive or birth an infant. As a general rule, fledglings have about 2/3 the power they would if they were sired, based on their age. **Remember, fledglings age until they are sired.**
MAX SPEEDS: a vampire's maximum speed is twice that of his transformation age, for example, a vampire that was turned 100 years ago can run 200 miles per hour (320 kph). If the vampire is drinking human blood, their speed will increase to three times their speed, for example, a 100 year old vampire would be able to run 300 mph (480 kph). When drinking human blood, the effects will last for twenty-four hours per 1L of blood.
MAX STRENGTH: maximum strength in pounds is three times their body weight, for example, a 130 lb (59 kg) vampire could handle 390 lb (170 kg). With human blood the effects last twenty-four hours per two liters of blood, and enhance their strength to 4.5 times their weight; for example, a 130 lb (59 kg) vampire could handle 585 lbs (265 kg).
MISC: Furthest distance they can see/hear/smell clearly: 0.75 miles (1.2 km) | Accelerated healing: superficial cuts on the skin are almost instantaneous; cuts that are deeper heal six times faster that of a human (even if the skin repairs itself, the wounds underneath must heal as well)
Lycans are transformed through a bite and the virus carried in their saliva. Unlike vampires, lycans are not required to exchange any bodily fluids in order to transform. The L-Virus takes over the body's functions, increasing teeth length by half an inch, ceasing the aging process, enhancing the senses, increasing speed and agility, and reprogramming the organism's cells, allowing them to shape-shift. The shift is triggered mostly in the light of a full-moon, and those that are young new -- until about 5 years of being a lycan -- do not have full control over their transformations. They are dangerous and most are kept in a guarded location until the innate drive to feed on anyone and anything subsides.
Two lycans can reproduce, or a lycan and a human can reproduce. The offspring will be a lycan, which will keep aging until bitten or injected with the L-virus, to stop the cells from aging. This is the only time in a lycan's life that exchange of fluids is vital to its life processes. It is against the law for a lycan and an Homo provectus to reproduce, for fear of a super-human race.Though lycans cease aging at whatever age they are bitten, their lifespans are not forever. Lycans live until about two hundred years after the time they are bitten, most dying from old age. Some of their weaknesses are: the full-moon, pure silver (it is like poison to their systems), normal flesh wounds from sharp objects or combat, and the V-Virus.
MAX SPEEDS: lycans move relatively slowly their first five years, only traveling at 30 mph (48 kph). Once a lycan reaches five years, their speed slowly increases by 15 mph, so after five years of transformation (until they are under control) a lycan's top speed is 45 mph (72 kph). Every ten years their speed slowly increases by 15 mph. Age fifteen, a lycan can run 60 mph (96 kph).
MAX STRENGTH: due to their bulk, lycans are extremely strong, able to handle weight five times their weight. The bulkier the lycan, the more weight they are able to handle, for example, a 200 lb (91 kg) lycan could handle 1000 lbs (453 kg).
MISC: Furthest distance they can see clearly: 1 mile (1.6 km) | Furthest distance they can hear clearly: 1.25 miles (2 km) | Furthest distance they can smell clearly: 1.25 miles (2 km) | Accelerated healing: superficial cuts on the skin are almost instantaneous; cuts that are deeper heal five times faster that of a human (even if the skin repairs itself, the wounds underneath must heal as well)
When the radiation infected the world, most organisms died, especially those in the immediate blast zones. Those that lived on the fringes of the nuclear impacts suffered the long-term effects of radiation in the water, in their food and the air. Most died from poisoning, but like so many millions of years ago, the body began to mutate. There were a select few whose bodies did not reject the mutations in their DNA, rather embraced them. Those with the good mutated genes began to repopulate, some without knowing that they were extraordinary. This new race, Homo provectus
, also known as H.provectus
, had enhanced strength, agility, senses and healing, though not at the same level as a vampire.
These men and women are in every way human, except for their enhanced abilities. The aging process also has changed: this species of human ages 1.5 times slower than a normal human, once they reach puberty at age twelve. So if someone is twenty-four years old, they look and have the attributes of a sixteen year old. The women live between 130-138 years, and men 124-136 years. Despite a longer life, they are subjected to illness, flesh wounds, fatigue, and other factors that affect human daily life.
MAX SPEED: unlike other species, these people are born with enhanced abilities. At age 5 -> 15 mph (24 kph); age 10 -> 25 mph (40 kph); age 20 -> 40 mph (64 kph); age 30 -> 60 mph (96 kph); age 40 -> 85 mph (136 kph); age 50 -> 115 mph (184 kph). This species reaches its maximum speed at age fifty.
MAX STRENGTH: as with speed, they reach their maximum strength capacity at age fifty. Age 5 -> 30 lb (13.5 kg); age 10 -> 50 lbs (18 kg); age 20 -> 100 lb (45 kg); age 30 -> 175 lb (79 kg); age 40 -> 225 lb (101 kg); age 50 -> 250 kg (113 kg). Remember these are average weights (can go +/-), and the significant increase mirrors the dramatic growth onset of puberty and childhood.
MISC: Furthest distance they can see/hear/smell clearly: 0.5 miles (0.8 km) | Accelerated healing: superficial cuts on the skin are almost instantaneous; cuts that are deeper heal three times faster that of a human (even if the skin repairs itself, the wounds underneath must heal as well)
