I'M RINGING ALL THE WARNING BELLS
Tanner's had taken the truck, and his step-mom had taken the car, so there was really nothing left to take and he didn't have much time to figure out what the hell he was going to do. He had told Geneva, his new friend that he met at homecoming, that he would take her swimming. And he had sort of forgotten that that was supposed to be today. In less than an hour. He had packed all of his swimming stuff into a backpack and slung it over one shoulder as he tried to figure out how he was going to get to Gen's house and then to the rec center with no vehicle.
His bike! Right. He had put it away for the colder months, but this was urgent. and desperate times call for desperate measures. Tanner walked through the door in the porch into the garage. His Softail was in its usual winter spot, in the very back corner, but Tanner dug out a path and opened the overhead door. It was cold outside, but not as cold as it had been. Great. If it was too cold, well, he wouldn't be going. Or he'd have to find another way to take her. But Tanner swung his leg over the bike and wheeled it outside onto the driveway. Being on his bike always felt good. It wasn't an exaggeration when they said that being on a bike was like flying. That's really what it felt like.
Tanner started the ignition with the push of a button and left the bike in the driveway to warm up a bit. The fuel gauge told him it was 3/4 full, so he should be good to go. He went back into the house to make sure that Bea and Axel's food and water dishes were full, then grabbed his jacket on the way out. He'd need that. Tanner pulled each arm through it, then put the black backpack back on. He shut the door to the house behind him, making sure to lock it, then texted Gen to let her know that he was going to be there soon. He swung his leg over the bike again, kicked the kickstand up from beneath it and pulled out of the driveway.
The entire way to her place he tried to remember the directions she had given him. He wasn't that bad at remembering that sort of thing, but he was hoping that what she had told him was right. When he got to the house that she described to him, he pulled into the drive and put the kickstand back down, sitting back and pulling out his phone from his pocket. He sent her a text to tell her that he was here, and he tapped his fingers on his legs as he hummed a song to himself, waiting for her to come out.

tanner spencer. that was his name. the moment geneva got home from the dance she rushed to her computer--not even bothering to change out of his dress and shoes first--and figured out everything she needed to, and could know about this boy. his full name, where he went to school, who he hung out with and most importantly, if he was in any watcher posts.
well, much to her chagrin, he was. tanner spencer was well known for being friends with rylee mitchell, the girl geneva had quite the unpleasant online conversation with, and araceli ricci, whom geneva had yet to meet. they were both older than her and knew tanner very well, and rumors of them were flying around. geneva knew about this, but she had never met tanner before. something about seeing him and meeting him and having that bright wide smile directed at her made something in her shift. she didn't care about the rumors about him anymore. geneva just cared about him.
at first, when she realized that tanner was the subject of a lot of girls' affections, geneva figured she didn't have a chance, but then the little voice in her head told her there was always a chance, right? as long as their friendship was alive and kicking, then she could have her way with him if she tried hard enough.
they had exchanged numbers and he had told her that he'd take her swimming. swimming! who took random girls he met at dances swimming? apparently tanner did, and apparently he liked geneva enough to even make an effort to hang out with her and the mere fact sent giddy feelings throughout her body. geneva had even encircled the date on her planner. nothing was going to go wrong on this day.
when she woke up on that fateful day, geneva set to work. she pulled open her closet and picked up the swim suit she had put aside for that day. it was a pretty green one piece and it was the right kind of decent and it fit her slim frame nicely. she placed that in a bag and curled her hair in a nice way. (even if it was probably going to get wet, she should still look nice before.) she also grabbed her shades and a sun hat, for good measure. she placed all of this in a white beach bag and then padded down the stairs to wait by the door. she checked her make up in the hallway mirror. perfect. if life has taught her anything, it's to look the part. and her job today was to look good and asthetically pleasing.
tanner was picking him. wasn't he a sweetie? geneva checked her phone ever other minute, chewing on the inside of her cheek and tapping her fingers on her arm. soon enough, her patience paid off and she recieved a text saying that he was there. geneva took a deep breath--several in fact--and gave herself a little peptalk as she gripped the doorknob.
you can do this. you are not going to make a fool of yourself. he's a nice boy. you have a chance. open the door and show him how nice you are.
and she did. she twisted the knob and opened the door slowly, as to not seem overeager, and then at the sight of him, a wide grin spread over her face. he looked...really good. the jacket and the pants and the adorable pink shoes. geneva practically skipped down the steps towards him. and oh my goodness, he had a motorcycle. geneva was going to ride a motorcycle with tanner spencer.
she kept the grin on and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear, "hey tanner."

I'M RINGING ALL THE WARNING BELLS
He was glad that it wasn't extremely cold today. It wasn't that he didn't love cold weather - winter was his favorite - but driving a motorcycle wasn't exactly the best thing to do when it was cold. Even during summertime, when it was warm, if there was even a breeze or he went fast enough, the wind could get pretty chilly on his hands. And now, when he had obviously forgotten to wear gloves or something of the sort, he was probably going to be a bit cold. Oh well, he'd deal. Tanner looked down at his hands just as he heard the door to her house open. He took a moment before he looked up at her, and he smiled.
She was a couple years younger than he was, but that didn't mean he couldn't think she was cute. She wasn't ugly, that was for sure. But he couldn't really think more than that. He had a girlfriend now, and she was still only fifteen. Was she fifteen? Or was she younger? Tanner didn't really know. She was around there, at least.
"Hey." He greeted her with a smile and a slight wave of his hand. She skipped towards him and he stood up, still over the bike. "Ready to go?" She looked ready to go. Tanner had been going over a mental checklist, trying to think of all the things he had needed. Since they were going to an indoor pool, he didn't need sunglasses. Or a hat. Still, it felt weird not even wearing one right now, but that was fine. Just more things to have to remember once they got there. All he had was his towel and his shorts, all packed up in the black backpack that was hanging from his shoulders.
But it wasn't for long, he slid it off and held it in one hand. "Could you carry this for me? I mean, I would but then there wouldn't really be that much room for you back there." He probably should've thought ahead and remembered that he was going to be carrying a passenger. He usually rode alone, or had Rylee with him, and didn't really carry much of anything. Oh well, this wasn't that big of a deal. Tanner moved himself forward a little bit, making more room for her to sit. "You can get on, if you want" A small smile crept on his lips again as he looked back at her. "If you're not scared." He winked, and he laughed. He knew that it was pretty nerve-racking, being on a motorcycle for the first time - he didn't know if she had ever been on one, but he was just assuming - but he knew that it was pretty much totally safe. He wasn't a bad driver by any means. So, really, she would be fine.

tanner spencer was the kind of guy you dropped everything for. as a matter of fact, geneva had an important interview to do but she rescheduled it (which required a lot of hard work and research) just so that she could spend the day with him. geneva rarely sacrified her work for another human being. before the dance, she had planned on writing to the watcher about everything she had seen and heard, and then forgetting the night for the rest of her life. if there was something geneva didn't enjoy, it was being pushed around by older people who didn't notice her but at the same time, hated her.
tanner didn't hate her, though. tanner was a nice boy who knew nothing about and was nice enough to hold a sort of long conversation with her. he didn't mind that she was a freshman. he didn't mind that she didn't have any friends. (though she sort of forgoed that fact when telling him about herself.) he saw her as she was, without all the drama of the schools or anything. that was nice. geneva never knew having a friend was this nice.
who even had motorcycles nowadays? geneva thought, but she didn't mind. not if she was going to get to ride on the back of it while holding onto tanner. this wasn't a bad deal, she thought. when he smiled right back at her, geneva felt like she could've melted into a puddle on the sidewalk right then and there. his smile was a beautiful kind of bright.
"yeah, totally ready." she said, giggling and gesturing to her bag. he seemed to have a bakcpack. she hoped he was as prepared as she was, because honestly, she had planned what she was going to wear days and days in advanced. she was wearing nice black skinnies, a bright yellow shirt and a black cardigan. after deliberating for days on what combination of clothes to wear, she was satisfied with her choice.
when he slipped off his backpack, she cocked her head to the side and wondered why he needed her to hold it, then she it hit her. maybe it was because a backpack would get in the way of her holding onto him. and yeah, what he said too. of course she'd need room. silly geneva.
"oh, of course, sure." she said, her voice light and bouncy. geneva took the backpack from him and swung it over his tiny bony shoulders. he scooted forward on the bike to make room for her, geneva blinked. well, she'd never riden on a motorcycle before. how hard could it be, right? people did it all the time. she gulped, "me? scared? of course not."
to prove her point, she moved over and got on, her legs a little short considering she wasn't a very tall girl. geneva tentatively placed her hands on tanner's sides, still a little shy and hesistating on wrapping her arms around him. she readjusted the backpack and her own bag, so they wouldn't fall of, "alright, i think i'm ready." she said, trying to keep her voice from quivering. yeah, this was as ready as she'll ever be.

He was glad that she took the backpack from him. He could've always just put it in front of him, but that would be difficult to try keep it from falling, and it would look kind of awkward. But then he did feel kind of bad for making her carry it. Tanner could've easily just worn the shorts to swimming, and then back, but he hated being in wet clothes longer than he had to. Plus, where would he keep his towel? This was just an easier solution, since she was nice enough to hold it for him after all.
Tanner held the bike steady as she got on, although she didn't really affect much of anything. She was light enough that he knew this really wasn't going to be much different than not having a passenger at all. That was good. She put her hands on his sides, and he wasn't very convinced when she said she wasn't scared, just generally from that comment alone. Maybe she wasn't completely scared, per se, but nervous. He was fine with that, everybody got nervous around a bike. Especially if you haven't been on one before.
She said she was ready, and Tanner smiled. "Are you sure? Because you might want to hold on a bit tighter. I'd hate to lose you off the back of this thing." He turned his head a bit to catch a glimpse of her for a moment before completely sitting down on the bike, feeling it adjust to their combined weight. He kicked the kickstand back up into place and pushed his feet on the ground towards the edge of the driveway, before he stopped to look both ways. Safety first.
He smiled again and looked in one of the mirrors on the handlebars at his passenger. "Aaand we're off." Tanner lifted his feet and rested them on the foot bars that were on either side, letting his hand accelerate the bike and let the other release the clutch. He gave one quick check in the other direction before he turned off onto the street, shifting gears smoothly with his left foot to make them go faster.
Tanner squinted against the cool breeze that was hitting his face more sharply now that they were actually moving, and he took one hand off of the handle bar to warm it in his pocket for a few moments before he hit a red light and took it back out again. That wasn't cool. He shifted down a gear and eventually stopped, steadying the bike with both of his feet on the ground. "Are you still good?" He laughed and looked back at her through the mirror again. Hopefully he wasn't going to be emotionally scarring her from any motorbike ride again anytime soon.

not many things scared geneva. she could face up to an absolutely frightening senior with claws that could cut through glass and still come out in one piece, because journalists were supposed to be fearless. they were supposed to not be afraid to do outrageous and out of this world things for the sake of their calling because people who did normall, safe things didn't get notice. your job in this world was to get noticed, by as many people as possible. you had to be fearless.
this, however, was a whole other story. geneva wasn't only scared of falling off the thing, but she was always sort of scared to hold onto tanner. call it nerves, call it a stupid crush (which it clearly wasn't) but geneva couldn't hold on any tighter. her fingers were shaking slightly (very, very slighty) and she squeezed her arms to her side, locking both bags in place. when he joked about her falling off, she forced a small laugh, and then said, "i don't think i'd like that eighter," which she wouldn't.
he was smiling when he looked back at her, and she could've sworn something twisted at the pit of her stomach. maybe it was the fear, maybe it was something else. either way, she didn't have much time to think about it. the bike started moving, and the sudden change in speed make a rather undignified squeak come out of geneva's mouth. she prayed that tanner didn't hear her, but it was improbably, considering her mouth was about eight or so inches away from his ear. her arms jumped and immediately went to wrap around his waist in a rushed panicked. she pressed her cheek to his back and squeezed her eyes shut. don't look, don't look, don't look.
she felt like she was flying. the wind cut through his hair and she slowly opened her eyes, but didn't loosen her grip on tanner. the world was zooming past, and her stomach was doing backflips but it felt...strangely good. geneva breathed in, the small of the city and a little bit of tanner filled her nostrils. she could get used to this, couldn't she?
it didn't last very long before they reached a red light, and the bike slowed to a stop. geneva's breathing had gotten a bit shallow somewhere there, and anyone could hear her inhale and exhale.
"yeah, i'm just lovely." geneva said, a little breathlessly, but still smiling. she was still holding onto him in far of the bike starting up again, but her fright had considerably lessened. at least now she wasn't scared out of her wits. tanner wouldn't let her die. she was sure of it.

I'M RINGING ALL THE WARNING BELLS
When Tanner felt Gen's arms go around him, he couldn't help but smile. He knew that she would have to eventually, it had happened nearly every time he took someone new on his bike. Tanner would do it too, because he would not want to fall off of the back. But lucky for him, he was always the driver now, never the passenger. Tanner could hear her breathing, and he looked again in the mirror at her. He flashed her a smile and nodded. "Good." Maybe he shouldn't take off so fast like he did last time, he really didn't want something bad to happen. After all, this was the first time they had really hung out together, besides at homecoming, and he really didn't want her to get hurt. That was just a bad impression.
Her arms were still around him, and the light turned green, so Tanner let go of the clutch and shifted gears a lot slower and smoother this time as they gradually took on more speed again. He was glad that he had decided to wear his jacket, it wasn't exactly the warmest day ever. He had actually considered leaving it at home, but since it was late November he shouldn't really take that gamble. Especially since he was going to be completely exposed on his bike. Tanner was relieved that she had worn some sort of jacket too, because if she had just gone with a t-shirt or something, that would be bad. But he probably would've let her wear his jacket, just because that was the gentlemanly thing to do.
They approached another intersection, then another, then another, and Tanner figured they were almost there. He often went to the same rec center during the winter and it was too cold to do any running outside. He remembered that there had been a pool in it, too, and that was why he invited Geneva along. Swimming could be fun. Most of the time, it was. Especially when you went with your friend. Tanner didn't really think the whole freshman/junior thing was weird at all, he had other freshman friends. And some of them were girls, like Brianne. So why would this be any different?
When they arrived at the rec center, Tanner parked the bike and shut the ignition off after he kicked down the kickstand. The boy took his hands off the handlebars and opened and closed them a few times to get circulation back in them. They were cold, they hadn't been protected from the wind with anything. He let her get off of the bike before he did, and then when he was off as well, he took the keys out of the ignition and put them in his pocket, making sure he wouldn't lose them. Keys were the worst thing to lose. Tanner took his backpack back from her and slung one strap over his shoulder and began to walk with her into the building. "How was that? I'm glad you didn't fall off or something." He smiled down at her again and put his hands in the pockets of his jacket. They were still cold, but they were slowly warming up. It would get better once they were inside, he was sure.

riding on a motorcycle definitely wasn't as scary as geneva initially thought it would be, but it was still scary. she could've sworn her breath fell somewhere in between her home and here. it was either that or the mere proximity of her to tanner took it away. either way, it was exhilarating, and it was worth getting her hair all tossed around for.
the thing is, geneva didn't do many fun things in her life. she was always into her own passion for writing and art and she was too determined to make use of every second of her life. she didn't want to waste it by going to the movies (unless it was for reviews) or playing mindless video games that rotted your brain for hours and hours until end. geneva wanted to be something and that didn't happen if you spent your time partying or getting drunk and not remembering it the next day.
a couple of days ago, when geneva spent a good hour just texting tanner and giggling her pants off, she realized something. she had spent a lot of time doing nothing, yet she felt extremely elated. maybe tanner could give her the joy she needed.
in a way, with just being there, he already was.
geneva hopped off the bike, hobbling a bit before finally steadying herself. she didn't expect the weight of the backpack when she got on the ground. there was a slight heel in her shoes and she wasn't really used to that. (she wasn't really used to wearing clothes to look pretty. usually she wore clothes to look inconspicuous. it was different now. geneva liked a boy so she was allowed to act like every other teenaged girl in america.)
"i'm really glad i didn't fall off too" she said, her voice still light, and thin, "and it was really fun, even though i was terrified of dying for the entire first half," she gave a him a short laugh and then geneva grinned up at him, and then slipped off the backpack. it was getting a bit heavy. she held it a couple of inches from the ground and then looked up at the rec center, observing the way the walls rose up high and the angles of the building, "wow, i've never been here before." she hadn't been much of anywhere, and if she did go somewhere, it wasn't for the scenery. it was for the people.
"so, um, let's go then?" she said awkwardly, shrugging the shoulder that was in the direction of the building. she couldn't really point with the bag in her hands.

I'M RINGING ALL THE WARNING BELLS
Tanner smiled when she said it was fun, and laughed when she mentioned thinking she would die during the first half. "Sorry about that. I'm a bit of a speed demon." It didn't really matter what he was driving, he always went a few miles faster than he was supposed to be going. He wasn't really the type to get road rage, but when people drove the speed limit it pissed him off. He thought of the speed limit as more of a guideline, not a solid number you had to drive at. He had gotten a few speeding tickets, but most of the time he just got warnings. All it took was an apology most of the time, or else they knew who he was already. That was a great perk of being a cop's kid. You could get out of shit a lot easier than you could if you weren't. But then, of course, there was a lot more expected of you. Like he should know the speed limit and obey it, but Tanner didn't care. He liked to get to places.
When they reached the glass doors to the building, he stepped forward and pulled the door open for her, letting Gen go in before him. She mentioned never being here before, and he shrugged as he followed her in. "It's pretty nice. I come here sometimes to work out and stuff when it's shitty outside." They approached the counter where you were supposed to pay for admission into the pool, but they didn't have to pay. Tanner had a pass for the entire rec center, and it let him bring a guest for free to the pool. He didn't usually come here with anyone, but today it was different. Hopefully better. The lady scanned his pass and then let them inside.
Tanner pointed at a door with a girl's sign on it. "If you change in there, I can meet you out at the pool in a few minutes." He wouldn't take long to change at all. He didn't know what girls all had to do when they changed into their swimming suits, but hopefully whatever they did, it didn't take them long. Tanner left her and pushed open the men's door. He didn't have a locker in here, but that didn't really matter. Some were open already and he figured he'd just take one. It didn't him very long to change into the grey shorts, so he took an extra minute or two sorting out the clothes he had been wearing into a neat pile in the locker so they didn't all fall out when he came back to put them back on. Things falling out of lockers was the worst, especially when the floor was destined to be wet. He set his leather jacket on top of the whole pile and put his towel on that, so it was easy to get at first.
He made his way through the change rooms and past the showers into the pool area, and he glanced around a quickly to see if Geneva was out here. No, not yet. She shouldn't be too long. Tanner was going to wait to hop in the pool, because you couldn't go in by yourself. That was just rude. Tanner found himself picking at his nails, a bad habit that he couldn't really stop, and leaned against a wall and waited for Gen to come out.

tanner opened the door for her, and geneva had to keep the smile down so she didn't look like a complete lunatic. he was such a gentleman, she thought, as she listened to him talk. his voice was pretty too. she kept a hold of her bag as they reached the counter. oh, apparently they didn't have to pay. how nice was he? she gave him an approving smile as they walked toward the pool area.
and then tanner pointed to the girls' room and told her to get changed, so she gave him one last smile and then nodded, "alright, i'll see you in a bit," she replied cheerfully and then she pushed open the door. thankfully, it was empty.
the moment she was alone, geneva did something she never thought she'd do in her entire life. geneva squealed. she made this inhumane high pitched sound that a lot of her peers made, but she never did. because she never had anything to squeal about, but this was different. this was new. tanner just so, so sweet and so nice and such a gentleman and such a good guy that geneva wondered where he had been her entire life. and why he hadn't arrived sooner.
after the squeal came a bit of giggling, and geneva must've sound like some sort of serial killer as she pushed into a stall and changed as she laughed, just laughed to herself like some stupid little girl who was let into a candy shop.
it actually shocked her, that she had managed to keep her cool up until this point. but then again, after all, reporters were supposed to be able to stay calm in any situtation. this was no exception, and now more than ever geneva was so grateful to herself for all the training she put herself to. she was sure she wasn't going embarrass herself infront of tanner. she was certain of it.
she changed quickly, because she had wasted enough time freaking out inside of the bathroom that tanner was probably waiting for her already. she checked her hair in the mirror, and made sure that her face looked nice enough even without make up on. it wasn't good to wear make up if you were going to go swimming, geneva thought, so she didn't wear any. she saw an empty locker and shoved her things in it, hoping that nobody would think about stealing them. then, she took a deep breath, and stared herself down.
"it's just a boy, geneva." she told herself, her eyes falling down to the sink and her breath coming in quick bursts, "you can do this. you're not going to embarrass yourself," she brought her gaze back up, "he's going to like you." she gripped the sink a little tightly, "you can do this." there was a kind of determination in her eyes that she hadn't seen in a long time. geneva looked at herself, and decided it was a good thing. she took another deep breath and then left the bathroom.
when she walked out, a thought occured to geneva. when was the last time she'd even been in a pool? she must've been a child, when her father was still alive. well, not the time to think about it. she'd just have to adapt, and pull those swimming memories back from her childhood. it couldn't too hard, right? she saw swimmers on tv. she could do it.
"hey!" she greeted, when she saw him. he was leaning against a wall, so geneva took the opportunity to...well, marvel at his body. she was only a teenager. it was only normal, right? and he looked, well, really good. she had to tear her eyes away, as to not look like some sort of pervert, so she changed the subject and moved her eyes towards the water, "wow, i don't even remember the last time i've been in a pool." she said, her voice light and a little bit breathless as usual, "but don't worry, i'm pretty sure i remember how to swim."
