Finally, it was Friday. Tanner had just left school and went straight to the mall instead of going home. So far, he didn't have any plans for tonight, but that could change at any time. And if he was out and about, he could run into someone and get an invite to a get together rather than getting one over text. The walk from Lannister to the particular mall he had chosen was only about forty-five minutes, and he had his earphones in the entire time, walking to the beat of each song that played. Tanner actually made it to school today. His father had woken him up at eight o'clock, and Tanner knew that he had to shower and get out of the house on time if his father was watching. He went to all his morning classes, but took an extra hour for lunch. Sitting through an entire Monday took a lot, and Tanner figured he could reward himself, right?

He knew that if he kept up his ways of not going to school regularly, his teachers were going to start contacting his father more than they already were. Tanner knew that his sister knew he wasn't going, was she telling him too? He already had to stay in detention more often than he would've liked, and he had heard his dad talking about how he was setting him up to get tutored, too. Tutoring? Really? Tanner wasn't stupid. He knew what they were doing in most of his classes, and the ones that he didn't know, weren't really all that important. Whatever. This was the weekend and he was going to enjoy it. No school, no tutoring, no detention. And he wasn't going to let his dad have another one of his 'talks'.

As soon as Tanner got to the mall, he headed straight for Orange Julius. After all that walking, he needed something to drink. The line wasn't very long, so he took his earphones out of his ears and stuff them into the pocket of his black leather jacket. "Medium strawberry-banana, please." The girl turned around to make his smoothie while he waited. Tanner quickly took his phone out of his pocket to check his messages. Nothing. What was wrong with people today? No talk of parties or anything. There was hardly a chance that he'd be able to have one. He couldn't risk it with his father and all, and he didn't want anyone from school at his house while Dylan was there. Tanner paid the girl, got his change and his smoothie, and turned to walk down the mall. He hadn't really thought out what exactly he was going to while he was here, but he could always use a new shirt. So, he set out in the direction of the nearest clothing store.

[dohtml]

Let the rain wash away all the pain of yesterday

the mall wasn't corinne's favorite place in the world. she wasn't a fan, honestly. the crowds of people and the types of people that she couldn't stand, it wasn't as fun as others made it out to be. still, she needed some new clothes and this was the only way she would get them. normally, cori would've done the sensible thing and ordered her clothes online, but she needed to make sure everything fit before wasting her fathers' money, though she doubted that he'd care.

stopping at the little cafe near the entrance that she'd just come in, corinne ordered some kind of fruit smoothie, because by her thoughts if she had coffee now, she'd be all hyped up later, and that wouldn't be good. she was really...logical in her thought processes when it came to making decisions. it was a weird thing. well, cori was a weird girl, honestly. sliding the exact amount of money toward the cashier and receiving a cup in return, cori took the plastic cup and began to sip the frozen fruit concoction. it was actually really yummy. some kind of berry mix, if she wasn't mistaken. she stood for a moment, appreciating the taste before she began walking down the long stretch of mall, her heels click-clacking against the linoleum tiles.

although she tried to keep her mind on the task at hand, all corinne's thoughts drifted to was the news she'd received today. that she was going to be tutoring a lannister boy. of course, they all knew corinne couldn't say no, and even her father told her that he expected her to do this. not exactly what the brunette wanted to hear, but she sighed and accepted the job anyway. but from what she'd heard, this tanner kid didn't sound all that great. he was only a grade lower than her, and seemed to encompass everything she loathed. party boy slacker. an annoyed look crossed her face and she sipped her drink, hoping maybe to bring on a brain freeze to change her focus onto anything but this tanner spencer kid.

the brunette spied a familiar looking orange julius up ahead, and she raised her brows. it was a weird name. and she wasn't a huge fan of them, but still. the name was odd. and it made her wonder why call a franchise 'orange julius'? she pondered this, but of course, in typical corinne fashion, she let her mind wander until one foot crossed incorrectly in front of the other, sending the brunette in the red dress to the floor, her drink spilling, things falling from her purse, and her, looking up to see a somewhat attractive boy right in front of her.

attractive? no. she didn't think he was attractive. that would mean she liked him, and that was a distraction in her work, and if she had a boyfriend her father would see him as a distraction, and oh lord, she felt anxious. corinne took a breath before she began to move, trying to gather the things that had fallen from her purse. her planner, her address book, her phone, and other items. she looked up at the boy and raised her brows. "i'm sorry. i wasn't paying attention and i'm a klutz. if i spilled my smoothie on you, let me know." she said, trying to sound as genuine as possible.

Tanner looked down at his shoes and decided he could probably go with some new ones as well. This pair had been worn down quite a bit, and the left shoe had a rip along the inside going from his big toe and halfway down to his heel. He didn't notice anything of it while he was walking, and these were his favorite pair. But he knew he had to part with them someday, and if he was here he might as well get it over and done with. Maybe he could get a pair that gave him a boost on his height. That would be a big help. He smiled to himself as he took another sip of his drink through the straw. Tanner had never really let his height bother him. Afterall, it's not like he was a midget or something like that. He was a bit below average, but that didn't matter. His attitude more than made up for the foot that most of his friends had over him.

He brought his hand carrying the drink down to below his waist and stuffed his other in his pocket. A small sigh escaped his lips as he tried to make up his mind on where to go. Should he go after shoes first, or clothing? At that moment, he felt his phone start buzzing. Pulling it out, he saw it was a text from Dylan. She wanted him to bring home something for dinner. As if that was happening, he wasn't going to carry food all the way back home. If she wanted it so much, she could come and get it herself and then give Tanner a ride home as well. Come to think of it, that wasn't a bad idea at all. Tanner was about to reply to his sister and tell her to come get him in an hour or so when he heard someone hit the floor behind him.

Tanner raised his eyebrows and saw it was a brown-haired girl in a red dress, someone he didn't know. His look of shock soon turned into a frown as he bent his knees to help her pick up her things. He put his smoothie on the floor beside him, but paused before he started to touch what was once in her purse. Tanner knew from experience that most girls didn't like when guys touched whatever they hid in there. He heard the girl speak to him, and he flashed her a smile. "It's fine, don't worry." When she mentioned that she might have gotten some of her drink on him, he looked down at his pants and shook his head. "We're all good. I think the floor got the worst of it." Tanner motioned with his head towards the floor. There was a good amount of smoothie covering the area where the girl had fallen, but that wasn't their problem. There were cleaning people, and they'd probably be here in no time to clean it all up.

When nearly everything had been picked up, Tanner wiped his hands off on his legs. He had gotten a bit of the drink on his hands as he helped her, but it wasn't that big of a deal. He picked up his own drink before he got back up on his feet. Tanner outstretched a hand for her to take if she needed help getting up. His hazel eyes flashed to her shoes, and he didn't blame her for falling. Those looked tough to walk in. If it was hard staying up to walk around in them, it couldn't be much easier to get back standing.

honestly, cori felt embarassed to the max. had her father seen her, he’d be ashamed. her mother would’ve been freaking out, as per usual. she was sure her mother probably had anxiety too. whether or not it was driven by her husband, corinne wasn’t too sure. but then again, maybe the brunette was the only one in her house with anxiety driven solely by her mogul father. but michael sawyer was a ball of anxiety-inducing anxiety, so it wasn’t shocking that even the thought of him got corinne even the teeniest bit stressed out. she took a deep breath, as advised by her therapist. and tried to relax. but the idea of embarrassing herself in front of the general public of the mall made her feel even more anxious. no doubt her father would hear about this, somehow, some way.

she sat herself up and began grabbing things off the floor, feeling a red color creep into her cheeks. this was slightly not so ordinary when it came to corinne. she didn’t...blush. but suddenly she felt far too embarassed. thankfully he said it was fine, not to worry. she would’ve laughed. worry was her middle name. actually, it was brynn, but it should’ve been worry. because honestly, it was the middle name that fit her best. because if her father was that ball of anxiety-inducing anxiety, she was a ball of worry. she snuck a look at his pants and shoes, and obviously he did too because he cleared it as okay, followed by the realization that the floor got hit the worst. she saw it and in her mind, she felt terrible. she would’ve cleaned it up but she was in a dress and she knew that there were cleaning people to do it, and a lady didn’t clean if they had people to do that, according to her mother.

finally scooping up her phone, corinne began to try to stand, only to see tanner’s hand. she took it and used him to get herself up. flashing him a smile, she shook his hand. ”i’m corinne. corinne sawyer. nice to meet you.” she let his hand go and she adjusted her dress slightly, trying to maintain eye contact. something about this boy felt...weird. like somehow, she knew him or had seen him somewhere...if only she could figure out his name. that'd put everything together in her head. "thanks for the help up, by the way. i appreciated it." she said, tucking some brown curls behind her ear, trying to hold some professionalism in the situation despite the...incident.

Tanner felt bad for the girl. Even though most people had lost interest in staring at the girl who had fallen, he was sure that some were still watching. She couldn't have fallen in a worse place in the entire mall. The food court and the surrounding area was almost always filled with people. With all those people, though, Tanner couldn't help but notice that nobody came to help her other than himself. They could've just figured that Tanner had it all under control, but still. The polite thing to do would be to stop and ask if she was all right. Even Tanner knew that it was the better thing to do and he wasn't exactly the world's kindest soul. But hey, since she had fallen pretty close to him and he had reacted to it, he would help. And the fact that she was pretty cute helped too.

He took another small drink out of the plastic container in his hand as she pulled herself up with his help. He matched her smile with one of her own as she introduced herself and then put his hand back into his jacket pocket. Corinne Sawyer? Why did that name sound so familiar? Tanner couldn't help but to stare momentarily as he tried to figure out who she was. He had heard her name before, there was no doubting that, and he had heard it recently. His mind tried to put together the puzzle pieces that were scattering around. If he didn't figure it out soon, it would be bothering him for the rest of the day. Corinne spoke again, and it seemed to snap his mind out of thinking about who she was. He nodded and gave her a warm smile. "No problem."

Just then, the seventeen-year-old remembered that she had introduced herself, but he hadn't yet. "I'm Tanner." He didn't usually introduce himself with his first and last name - Actually, he hardly ever had to introduce himself. Most people already knew who he was, and if they didn't he rarely got asked his name. It would eventually come up. Whenever he said his surname, there was a pretty good chance that his father would be brought into the conversation. He was a Detective, and a pretty damn good one at that, so a large majority of the people who needed Tanner to introduce himself already knew all about him.

The thought of his father brought another thought into his mind. The two had been eating supper a few nights ago when he had brought up that he hired Tanner a tutor. Apparently, until his grades (and attendance) were up to par, he wouldn't be allowed to go out for anything. Tanner objected immediately. He told his dad that he wasn't going to take lessons from anyone. School was enough. Plus, if he wanted to study he'd grab a few friends. But with friends, Tanner wouldn't get any work done and his father knew it. So he had gotten someone from another school to help him out. What was her name? Karen? Carrie? No, it was Corinne. All these thoughts raced through his mind and before he could really think about it, raised an eyebrow and looked at the girl standing across from him. "Do you go to Anselm's by any chance?"

people were staring. she knew they were. corinne wasn't stupid, actually. she felt her body tense up and then realized that the boy was the only one who'd stopped to help her. really? wow, people were in fact giant assholes. corinne had been raised properly. she had manners. and she knew that at least you asked if you could help instead of walking by with a sneer. or a rude laugh. that was downright mean and unacceptable, and if corinne had a right mind at the moment, she would've said something. but instead she rolled her eyes at the rude crowds, mentally reminding herself to thank this mystery boy again as soon as she could talk again. because this boy...well, he had her at a loss for words, something unbecoming of corinne sawyer.

she felt her cheeks continue to heat up, and internally she told her body to calm down, this was a stupid reason to get flustered. he was a boy. and since when did corinne EVER get flustered around boys? never was the correct response to that question. she saw boys and relationships to be distractions and something that she honestly wasn't interested in. but this boy was driving her crazy and she didn't like it. so what did she do? what every self-respecting sawyer did. stuff their feelings into the darkest corner of their minds and never give it a second thought. and so she tried. spencer would tell her to not let this kid get to her. he was probably "not worthy" because cori had ridiculously high standards in general and sometimes she wondered if anyone would ever meet these standards of hers. well, maybe. but this boy couldn't possibly.

he said it was no problem. but that wasn't what corinne let her audible gasp out for. it was his introduction. of all the...the...she couldn't help but hear her mind curse, something unbecoming of a lady, the fucking names in the world, this boy had to be named tanner? "t-t-tanner? as in...tanner spencer?" she gaped at him. really? she had to make this first impression in front of the kid she was tutoring? honestly? of all the dumb moves, corinne had to pull this one? she cursed herself mentally, wishing that she could just make this awful mess go away. all of it. because she wanted to meet him and seem superior and all that jazz, the typical corinne sawyer entrance. but instead she had to fall flat on her face in front of him. and then...think he was cute and get flustered? no no no. this wasn't happening. it couldn't be.

taking a deep breath, corinne let her thoughts gather. tanner, according to her friend spencer maxwell, was a party boy. a slacker. the type of people she disdained with such...mite that the idea of even finding him attractive made her want to puke. and now she had to tutor him. fuck her. damnitt. and she couldn't back out, because then she'd have her father yelling at her about how she lost a great opportunity, because he knew about this little deal, and in fact, had helped in the forming of the plan. because michael sawyer's daughter was the best and she could whip detective spencer's boy into shape in no time. and if she backed out, well, her dad was gonna get shit, and then she'd get shit, and her anxiety suddenly felt like it was going to sky rocket. corinne coughed, hopefully averting any kind of attack. not here, not now. that would only make things worse.

and finally the spencer boy caught on. his raised brow was...no. it was nothing. "yes, i do. not that it's any of your concern." she stated in a clipped voice, realizing that all of this...this meeting had to stay professional. no matter how fast her heart was racing or how much her eyes wanted to ogle his body. it had to stay professional. and besides, he was far below her standards. far, far below.

As soon as Tanner had said his name, he knew something wasn't quite right. This was far too weird for it to just happen by accident. Had his dad somehow set him up to be here, and had hers done the same? No. He couldn't have. Tanner hadn't said more than a few words to his dad in the past few days. He narrowed his eyes slightly as he took another drink from his smoothie. It was almost gone, something Tanner didn't like. He looked down for a moment and when he heard Corinne gasp, he looked back up at her and raised an eyebrow. What was that for? The look on her face showed that she was shocked. Why on earth would she be this upset over his name? He kept his eyebrow up as she stumbled through her sentence.

"Last time I checked I was still Tanner Spencer ... So, yeah. That's me." He kept the straw in the corner of his mouth, still a little confused over her reaction. He knew that she was obviously the girl that his father had set him up with to get his grades back on track. And Tanner didn't exactly want to start off on the wrong foot with her. It seemed that with almost every teacher or authoritative figure in his life, he either hated them immediately or they didn't give him much of a chance to begin with. And since Tanner knew that this girl was pretty much his last hope in getting to pass junior year and ultimately high school, he didn't want to hate her. Not right away, anyways. He already knew that with the ultimatum of extra schoolwork when he could be doing something else being put onto her, he wouldn't like her much to begin with.

A small smirk grew on his face as he watched Corinne get upset. Her words were sharp, and Tanner couldn't help but shake his head, letting the straw fall out of his mouth and back into the cup. "Well I figured that since I was polite and helped you out I'd get to at least know where you're coming from." The seventeen-year-old shrugged and lowered his eyebrow, setting his face back to a neutral expression. "But I guess they must not teach manners at Anselm's, do they?" Tanner kept his eyes on her, his teeth lightly biting down on his tongue to keep himself from saying anything else. He usually didn't have that much against kids who went to the other school. For him, it was all about if they could party or not. And, of course, if they were assholes to him, he'd be one right back at them. That was when he fell into the all too familiar "i-hate-you-because-you-go-to-st-a's" sort of thing. But seeing as how Tanner had never seen this girl at a party before, or probably anywhere else in his life, she wasn't getting off to a real great start.

had this been a set up? honestly? it felt like she was on a bad tv prank show, being set up for some b-list celebrity to tell her that she'd been punked or whatever. but it didn't seem like this was worth the trouble. she felt a panic rise in her chest. this was so stupid. god, she looked stupid. and finally, for once in her life, corinne felt stupid. and she hated this feeling. she hated it so so much. her gasp was returned by a raised brow, and she raised hers in response, narrowing her eyes at him. he had to know who she was now, right? she was pretty sure she was in the only corinne at st. a's. and then she stumbled and that looked stupid. stupid, stupid corinne. she sighed and tried to compose herself internally, willing her mind to shut up. shut up and ignore that good looking boy.

"well then. it's nice to meet you." she said simply, nodding. she hoped she looked okay. what if he thought she looked gross? she ran a hand through her hair, making it look more...nice, she figured? she sighed. corinne probably looked stupid. but she bit her lip and hoped not. he looked like he would be a challenge. getting him to study would be hard, obviously. and if his teachers couldn't do it anymore, they handed the job off to corinne. so she had to suck it up and deal, because she was the only one who could do it now, it seemed. and she couldn't let petty feelings get into the way. they were evil. and she had a job to do.

he...smirked? he shook his head. corinne gave him the nastiest glare she could muster. "well, you seemed to know already, didn't you?" she asked, trying to control herself. and then he said it. if she was a boy, she would've lunged at him knocking his skinny ass to the ground. "excuse me?" she scoffed and walked up to him, staring at him. "first of all, i was brought up proper, so don't go saying i don't have manners. second of all, you're being really rude right now. and third of all..." her voice trailed off. third of all? "third of all..." her voice trailed again. what could she possibly say? "i would think you might ignore this silly feud for a little while to make things a little easier." corinne said with a raised brow. honestly, he wasn't the type of person she socialized with and vice versa. she was never caught dead at parties unless forced by her friends, though that was rare. still, they came from two very different worlds and if anything, that'd be the hurdle that corinne would have to face in order to get this slacker boy to actually focus and get his shit done.

though she wasn't sure she was all that ready to jump that hurdle just yet.

Tanner wasn't so sure about how he felt about meeting his tutor here. He had been a bit too ... nice? Not that Tanner wasn't nice guy - It was just he wasn't planning on being so kind the first time they met. He didn't know much about the girl, but what he did know was enough for him to decide that they were far too different for any sort of relationship beyond their study dates. Now that Tanner was actually interacting with her, and he had been polite enough to help her when she fell, how could he go back from that? How could he go back to being completely neutral when he had already been so ... kind? She probably didn't think very highly of him anyways, and he could tell just by the way she was looking at him. Maybe he would be able to get away with being a little arrogant after all.

His smirk soon dropped from his face and instead, his eyebrows came a bit closer together as his lips slightly parted. That was a pretty dirty look Corinne was giving him. He wouldn't be surprised if she started screaming at him right here, right in the middle of the food court in front of all these people. She looked like the type to do it. Tanner wouldn't be able to do anything. He wouldn't be able to fight back, and he certainly wasn't going to get into a huge verbal fight with her. They barely knew each other, and what would Tanner have against her? That she had to spend her time making sure he kept his nose in the books? No, that was absolutely nothing. She'd win. A small, sly grin was about to turn the corners of his mouth up at how upset she was getting about all of this when she stepped towards him.

Tanner instead appeared startled, if only for a moment. His eyebrows shot up, and his mouth opened. He took a small step back, trying to keep his distance. He definitely should've kept his mouth shut. Tanner looked up at her - she was quite a bit taller, no thanks to her heels - and the way she was talking was actually pretty frightening. She made her first and second points, and Tanner dropped one brow. He was being rude? He was about to voice his own opinion when she brought up a third point. Or, rather, she didn't. Her voice trailed off and Tanner could only keep a straight face for so long. A small smile appeared across his lips as she couldn't find her words. When she finally did, he took the smile off his face completely. She was right.

Maybe he shouldn't jump to conclusions about her or St A's. Actually, no. He was just going to draw the line at her. Tanner nodded and shrugged. "Yeah, I guess." He looked down at his shoes and then back up at Corinne. They didn't really kick things off to a good start, did they? He softly bit the inside of his cheek. It would make things a lot easier if they got along, if only for the few hours they had to spend together a week. "I'm sorry." He mumbled the words a bit, but actually meant them. He was the one who had to upset her, and if anyone should be apologizing, it was him. Tanner looked down at the near-empty drink in his hand, and then back at Corinne. "Do you want me to get you a new drink or something?" It wasn't his fault that she dropped hers, but it was really the least he could do.

corinne felt awkward. not just because her mind was trying to fight off the idea that tanner was attractive and actually didn't seem to take her shit so far as an attractive thing. because as mad as it made her, it was pretty hot. this coming from the girl who had no idea what hot honestly was. but still. the idea of him being nice to her was still...nice, she figured. but something about the way he stated his thoughts almost with a cocky air about him was something that corinne couldn't stand, but at the same time made her feel...weird. quite possibly attracted. but she had to bat these feelings away because they were deadly. absolutely deadly. and considering even him as anything more than her tutee was not a good idea. for either of them.

corinne was not a screamer. she couldn’t rival the temper tantrums thrown by even the biggest divas. she didn’t yell. she wasn’t loud. classy ladies didn’t scream. and corinne was pretty damn classy. she would’ve given him a good bitching out but they were in public, and that was rude. she didn’t wanna embarass him or make the situation any worse. but of course his comment got her riled up, and she didn have a bit of a temper if riled up enough. but honestly, she wasn’t going to have any more of a fit than she already was. she stared him down and couldn’t imagine him sitting down and working. his aura clearly reeked of laziness and corinne realized she had a challenge. but they were nice on occasion. especially when she didn’t have any to focus on at the time. like a rubik cube, almost.

she’d actually shocked him, and she smiled. a little, tiny smile. she had gotten him even for a moment. he moved back and she didn’t move forward. she kept her stance strongly, not letting herself move. she just had to talk. and she looked down on him too. she was actually taller than him and she would’ve laughed because it was a little bit funny. but this wasn’t time for amusement. point one, point two...shit, where was point three? it mustn’t have come, leaving corinne to look stupid again. he smiled and she frowned, almost feeling downtrodded. until it finally came and she smirked, triumphant. no cute boy would keep her off track. not even a cute boy like tanner.

the feud wasn’t her favorite topic, and she had no qualms about lannies. aside that some of them were like tanner, slackers. the kind of people corinne couldn’t stand. he actually agreed with her and her lips formed a perfect little ‘o’. shocking. ”yeah. glad you agree.” she said with a nod, and a small smile. maybe it wouldn’t be all bad. he apologized and she nodded. ”thanks. apology accepted.” the brunette bit her lip and awkwardly offered a hand, hoping they could shake and make up. make things better. he then offered to buy her a drink and she felt her cheeks heat up. why? no no no. stop, teenage hormones! ”sure. if you let me buy you another one too. for helping me.” she said, letting out the breath she’d been holding. honestly, it was the least she could do for his help. even if it had resulted in an awkward meeting. at least he’d helped, unlike anyone else in this stupid mall.

Good. So, they were good, then? Tanner doubted it. He knew that there was a fat chance that he'd ever totally get along with her. He'd be able to fake it around his dad, who would no doubt be wanting to monitor his progress. But what if he got to the point where he didn't have to fake anymore? What if he actually started to like her? That wouldn't be very hard to do, he could already tell. Even though she was the complete opposite of him and was everything he didn't want to surround himself in, he could tell that there was already something about her that drew him to her.

Tanner saw a small smile from the taller girl, and he returned it. If they were going to fight, this was not the place. Not in the middle of the mall. They had barely known each other for ten minutes and Tanner had actually been ready for something, even after he had helped her. It never hurt to be prepared, right? She accepted his apology and he felt a small wave of relief move over him. Tanner didn't need anything serious happening before they even started his tutoring. She could bail on the entire thing, and Tanner would be left with nobody else to help him. He wouldn't admit it, but he was actually depending on her to basically help him through the rest of the year. And that was pretty sad, seeing as it was only late September and he was already in danger.

He took her hand and shook it, looking down at their hands. Tanner had to watch himself from here on out. He could tell that she probably wasn't the kind of person to put up with much, and she could already tell what kind of person he was - Complete slacker, unmotivated, the exact kind of person she probably hated, all in one package. Tanner supposed he could try and watch his attitude, keep that in check. He wanted to keep his dad happy, and keeping his dad happy meant getting his grades up and keeping them there. Getting his grades up, well, that meant getting along with Corinne.

Tanner smiled when she accepted his offer. They could re-start, and hopefully get off on the right foot. They barely knew each other and were already re-starting? They better get this one right. Tanner chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, sure. Whatever works." Buying each other a smoothie? That worked. Tanner put the straw to his lips again and finished the last of it. He smiled up at Corinne, then turned to throw his empty container in the garbage before face her again. He outstretched his arm and looked in the direction of the place she had bought her smoothie from. "Ladies first."
