Tesla didn't stop running. She stumbled a few times, but kept going. It looked like a giant glacier. There were large chunks of ice everywhere. She crawled atop one, sliding down the other and resting against the icy wall. Her heart was racing. She put her jacket back on, holding the backpack against her chest, gripping the scythe just in case anyone followed her. She didn't know how well she could use something like that and decided Zeno could use it. The large knife in the backpack was a lot more appealing to her anyway.

She looked around. Everything was frozen solid. She shoved her hands in the pockets of her jacket, closing her eyes and listening closely. She could faintly hear the happenings at the cornucopia. Tesla couldn't help but fear the loss of both of her allies. Why didn't they get gloves? Some of those tributes were dumb as bricks. Frostbite would get them before anything else. She didn't see any gloves in the cornucopia either.

Tesla clenched her hands into fists inside her pockets, looking down at her backpack. Waiting. Praying. Hoping.

He didn't know where he was running to. Or from, for that matter, since he had glanced back more than once and seen no one there. It was as if he expected his eyes to deceive him, expected to find someone behind him the moment he lost speed.

He could feel the panic festering in his stomach, as if the gravity of his situation had just begun to set in. He couldn't run forever. It wasn't as if making clothes had prepared him in any way for running the hell away from there. He let his tempo slow, gradually, trying to ease the pain he would feel if he stopped to suddenly. He could see the orange of Tesla's jacket, leaning heavily against the back of a glacier in the distance.

When he finally reached the iceberg he leaned over, trying to slow heavy, labored breath. His knife was still dripping, and his hands were stained scarlet form the girl he had killed in the Cornucopia. He couldn't suppress the faint smile that tugged at his lips. He couldn't imagine how he looked now, ruffled and covered in someone else's blood. He felt stronger. He kind of liked it.

Once he had a few moments to catch his breath he threw the food packs he had retrieved next to Tesla, his expression hardening. He made a point to keep his fingers coiled around the knife. It was too good a weapon at this point to lose, and he wasn't sure yet if she and the District 5 boy would be trustworthy. "What did you get?" He muttered, still a bit breathless.

Cole pressed his back against the glacier, lowering himself into a sitting position. He was almost fatigued with relief. Making it out of the Cornucopia was something he hadn't expected. He hadn't planned any farther than that. But here he was, knuckles white from gripping the handle of his knife, with a few people he could almost trust. Maybe he could do this.

"Where'd the other guy go?" He mused, toying with the edge of the food packs. Each breath left a cloud of fine mist in front of his face. He wasn't really sure how else to start conversation at this point. "The Gamemakers must have had fun designing these." He gestured vaguely to the arm of his jacket. His hands were growing red in the temperature, so he stuffed them deep into his pockets.

Cole blinked the frost from his blue eyes and peered at the girl, waiting for a reply or something. The first few moments were the most awkward, he decided.

Zeno had been gracelessly half-running, half-sliding in pursuit of his two allies. He had somehow managed to put the night-vision goggles on, pushed up on his forehead, so he could better carry the blankets in his arms. He had somehow managed to make it away from the cornucopia unscathed, not counting his possibly bruised knees. They didn’t slow him down much though. Even with his awkward style, he could still run pretty quickly thanks mostly to his long legs

When he began to close in on the colorful blobs he realized they were at some sort of glacier. There were massive chunks of ice everywhere, and smaller ones on the ground. He leapt over one and jumped atop another before spying Tesla and Cole leaned up against one of the larger bergs.

“Hey!” he called out as he made his way over to them, dropping the pile of blankets at their feet before plopping down on the ice next to Tesla. “I got these. Thought they might help.” he said, gesturing to the blankets. He sunk back against the sheet of ice behind him and raised a hand to run through his hair, but was surprised when he felt metal instead, having temporarily forgotten about the goggles.

“Oh, these two.” he said as he pulled the goggles off his head and rolled them around in his hands. “I think they’re night-vision. I thought that maybe when we got to some shelter, we could take turns with them in the night, and the other two could sleep, like guarding, y’know?” He nodded as he spoke and handed the goggles towards Tesla so she could inspect them. It was then that he really first noticed Cole. They hadn’t really spent much time together, but Tesla seemed to think he’d be a good ally, and Zeno had more or less elected Tesla as his fearless leader. “I’m Zeno, by the way.” he said before extending a hand towards the other boy.

Feet scraping against the ice nearly made Tesla jump up. She gripped the scythe. Sure she wasn't the best with something that large, but it was better than nothing. The large knife in the backpack was great. Now if only Cole managed to get a weapon too.

Cole was covered in a splatter of blood. Her eyes widened a bit, holding back a shocked gasp. Her eyes traveled down to his bloody knife. Looked like he ran into a bit of trouble. Tesla tried not to let it show on her face, but it probably did.

He asked what she got. She held up the scythe and patted the backpack. "Not sure what and all is in this, there's a big knife in it though. I guess we could go through it now, but honestly that'd be stupid. We're out in the open almost." Tesla stood up and put the backpack on, adjusting the straps so it held snugly against her back. She kept a grip on the scythe, noticing how Cole held his.

"Look, I'm not gonna fight you Cole. We're allies, remember?" Just then, Zeno came bounding up. He seemed to be in higher spirits than she was. But that was a good thing, positivity would go a long way for as long as the three of them were together. That meant the careers were still prowling.

Tesla smiled and looked to Zeno. "The three of us are in this together now. Cole? You've got your knife. Looks like there wasn't much left when you got there, huh Zeno? That's okay, you can have this scythe." She and Zeno exchanged items. Tesla had a thing for eyewear. She tried them on and grinned. "These are great, bet they'll be useful for hunting too." Tesla paused and took the backpack off, pulling out the knife and putting the goggles inside. "Speaking of food, Cole got some meal packs. Pretty brilliant if you ask me. Who knows what's around here?" Tesla felt a lot like a leader.

She put the backpack back on and weighed the knife in her hand. It was a lot like a small sword. One of those girls had a sword, that was a scary thought. Tesla huffed, a cloud of air coming out of her mouth. It was cold. She wondered how they'd make it through the night.

"Where do we go from here?"

Cole's eyes flickered back and forth across the frozen wasteland, assessing the situation. He could see nothing but large pillars of ice and, in some places, the dark, churning water that must lay below. His breath clouded in the air and he gripped his knife tighter. Hell, he didn't even know how to hunt or anything. What had he gotten himself into?

Tesla spoke suddenly, shattering the stillness of the world around him and bringing him back to where he sat huddled atop the frozen chunk of ice. "Not sure what and all is in this, there's a big knife in it though. I guess we could go through it now, but honestly that'd be stupid. We're out in the open almost." Cole nodded silently in agreement, not turning his head to acknowledge her. His eyes were squinting through the white, trying to make out some strange shape in the distance.

Tesla seemed to notice the way his fingers hadn't loosened from the knife since he had returned, and he heard he say, "Look, I'm not gonna fight you Cole. We're allies, remember?" He bit his lip, fighting back a retort. He was scared. Scared to grow too close to these people because he knew they'd turn on each other eventually. But he forced his rigid shoulders to relax, and he blinked and murmured decisively "Right."

The ice made a strange scuffling noise a few yards off, and the dark-haired boy turned his head sharply. The noise was too clumsy, not deliberate or concise enough to be a career. He forced himself to calm. If you jump at everything they're going to think you're scared. He let his fingers slack on the handle of his weapon, wincing slightly, as his hands had begun to turn scarlet in the cold.

He finally saw the flash of orange, and a boy that was only vaguely familiar reached them. Cole bit his lip to keep from laughing, remembering in the training center the same boy he had thrown a knife at. He didn't know if he remembered, but part of him wished he did. It would be proof enough that he knew what he was doing. Because right now he felt like he had no idea what he was doing,

The second thing he noticed about the other boy was that he was kind of attractive. Which in this circumstance shouldn't have even registered. His cheeks were a bit hot as the boy extended his hand, saying a cheery “I’m Zeno, by the way.” Cole wiped his hand roughly against his jacket, trying to wipe away the blood, and offered his hand to return the gesture "Cole." His words came out more breathlessly than he had intended, and his cheeks felt really hot now. At least he had running all the way over there as a decent cover.

Trying to steady his now muddled thoughts, he tore his gaze from Zeno to the items they had jumbled together. Cole's food packs, a bundle of blankets, the large knife Tesla was holding and small knife he was holding, night-vision goggles (which he had to admit were a good find), and the scythe now clutched in Zeno's hands. He breathed a sigh of relief. They were better off then he had figured. "Speaking of food, Cole got some meal packs. Pretty brilliant if you ask me. Who knows what's around here?"

Cole couldn't help but manage a lopsided smile at her comment. It had pretty much registered that she was the leader around here, which didn't really bother him. He wasn't really the type that could pull that off. "Umm. Don't know. I haven't seen anything yet. But I'm pretty sure at least something lives out here." He responded to her question, digging his numb hands deeper into his pockets. He didn't want to waste the emergency food they had, but at some point he'd have to face that they'd need it. Unless they came across something.

The quiet was almost suffocating, pounding in Cole's ears, until he heard a few words uttered form beside him on the iceberg.

"Where do we go from here?"
He wished he knew how to answer.

He shook the other boy’s hand politely but when he pulled away he stared down at the traces of blood Cole left on it. He hadn’t really been expecting that. He hmmmed softly and wiped it away on his pants.

Zeno nodded vigorously along as Tesla spoke and took the scythe when she offered it. He hadn’t trained extensively with it or any similar weapon, but it couldn’t be that hard to use. He rolled his hands around the handle, trying to get a feel for it. Yeah. It couldn’t be that hard to use.

At Tesla’s question, he heaved a deep sigh, his hot breath mixing with the cold air in a cloud of smoke. “Well...” he started but paused and sighed again. “There was some sort of forest back there. There’d be cover, but I saw a bunch of people running in that direction. Plus we’d have to go back by the cornucopia.” And he certainly wasn’t about to do that. He shifted around and pulled himself to his feet. Taking a few careful steps up on the large mound of ice, he turned and scanned the horizon.

“Looks like just more ice over there.” he said, pointing the scythe in the direction he was speaking of. “And I think those are mountains over there. Don’t know about anywhere else. Can’t tell from here.” He propped the scythe against his side and put his hands on his hips, looking down on his fellow tributes. “Doesn’t matter to me where we go.” he said after a few moments, before plopping down and sliding on the ice back to where he was seated earlier.

It just really hit her that she was the leader. Tesla never was a leader of anything before. She was so used to being on her own, going off by herself, not talking to anyone. That was how she operated. No one really seemed to want her around back home. But she was okay with that, and actually preferred it. But here, now, she was the head of a trio. She was almost forced to talk, associate with them. But they would keep her alive, and she'd try and keep them alive too. Tesla had to admit, it was reassuring knowing that someone had her back.

But still, she knew that sooner or later there wouldn't be anyone to have her back. Either she would get killed, or she'd be alone without Cole or Zeno. How would she get by then? Those careers were crazy, she saw the way those District 4 tributes acted as if they owned the place, and they did. This was their playground, and she was an ant. Any moment she could be met by the boot of one of them, and then again she could somehow make it out alive. Unlikely, but she didn't know for sure.

Tesla swallowed hard, holding the knife close to her chest. She didn't like feeling this way, and it was an emotion that weighed so heavily on her she wanted to cry. But she couldn't, there was probably a camera on her. She didn't want to disappoint her mentor. Tesla wanted to try for him.

After a moment, she adjusted the straps on her backpack again. "I guess this was a better choice than the forest. You're probably right Cole, but I don't know if it'll be a good thing. It's too creepy and alone out here. That's never a good sign." Tesla slid down the ice again and sat down, her legs sprawled out in front of her. She gently scraped the blade against the surface of the ice, making a small pile of shavings on the tip.

"We should decide together.

It was quiet out there. Empty. As if the three tributes huddles around the chunk of ice were the only things there. The only things who's breath mingled in the frosty air. Cole could feel his shoulders go rigid; whether more so from cold or fear he was uncertain. He didn't like it. He felt like a sitting duck, a flash of fluorescent pink in a see of pristine white. Which wasn't a good thing considering there were Careers probably hunting them this moment. And even if they weren't hunting them they'd probably be easy prey to a passerby.

Tesla and Zeno seemed to share his misconceptions. It was obvious they planned to get the hell out of there as soon as possible. Cole shut his eyes, trying to remember all he had seen on his way. He hadn't seen much of anything really, Except for the snow in front of him and the orange of the District 5 jackets. He had been too in shock for his mind to focus, to comprehend the landscape around him, and he had found it had taken most of his energy to make sure he was still breathing.

He managed to dislodge some faint memories from before, with the aid of his two allies, who shared their own ideas. No one seemed quite sure what direction they were heading, which was a bit unnerving.

"The forest is obviously not a choice at this point. It's probably swarming with Careers. And if we're not wanting to cross the Cornucopia we could go around toward the mountains. I think there were caves on the other side too." He mused, fiddling with the weapon in his hands. He was trying not to make direct eye contact with Zeno in case he started fawning over him again. Which was the last distraction he needed at this point. He felt the color rush to his cheeks again without his consent. "But wherever we go I'd keep a lookout. If we're not being attacked by Careers then the Capitol will be getting bored of us. Which means mutts." He suppressed a shudder at the thought. "And there's also the fact we could freeze to death." He gave a sarcastic smile to accent his comment.

The dark-haired boy fought to rise onto his feet. It took a moment to steady himself on the slick surface of the ice and with his legs growing cold even through his heat-reflecting pants. "But while we're here we might as well make use of whatever's around." He couldn't help but think what a stupid idea it was, but he couldn't stand sitting there waiting for his own inevitable death any longer.

He listened quietly as the other two spoke, considering their options while tapping the heels of his boots against the ice below him. They couldn’t stay out here in the open, that was for sure. It would be night soon and it would get a lot colder. They needed to find somewhere with some kind of shelter. “I think the mountains are our only real option right now.” he said suddenly, eyes still glued to his own toes. He sighed softly and looked up at Tesla. “There’s gotta be caves there or something. And some kind of vegetation, which means animals.” He paused and shrugged before continuing, “There might be big ones, like...I dunno, bears or something. But that means there’s gotta be smaller ones, too. One’s we can catch.” And eat, but he didn’t really want to think about that at the moment.

When he heard the other boy mention mutts, his attention automatically turned to Cole. He hadn’t really wanted to think about that, either, but he knew it was true. The minute they got too boring the Gamemakers would unleash all sorts of Hell. Zeno stretched his neck up and looked around the surroundings again. He didn’t want to think about what kind of animals could survive out here. “Yeah, for sure. I have a feeling we’ll be getting one soon...” He began to trail off. It was probably true, though. They were all alone out here, far away from the Careers and the other tributes. And the Capitol probably didn’t care for that much at all.

Being as far away from the cornucopia as she was, Tesla couldn't head much that was going on. Which was probably best, killing wasn't all that great. But she'd manage for as long as she would in this arena. Either she would kill or be killed. Whatever happened would happen she guessed.

Tesla took a few steps, surveying everything around her. It was getting darker by the minute, and the thought of being so exposed made her terrified.

That's when she heard the scream. Faint, but clear as a bell. It sounded so familiar. Some poor little girl must've been caught. Little girl. What was her name? Tesla couldn't recall, but she remembered. When she first met Cole, she was there. Just as sassy as Tesla was. She liked that little spark in her. Could she really have died out that soon? The cannon confirmed it, and she held back the tears. It took one heartless bastard to hurt a little kid.

Turned away from Zeno and Cole, she tugged at a piece of hair nervously looking around. She would get paranoid eventually. "Yeah.. Swarming." She trailed off, shoving her hands down in her pockets and looking over to the mountains. Tesla grimaced and turned back to the forest. "I need. Need to go somewhere outta the open, like, right now. I need to get myself together."

Once again she set her eyes on the forest. Tesla took off her jacket again, bundling it up and shoving it down in the backpack. It really was cold out here, but she'd put it back on eventually. "I just need a minute guys, just a minute." Without another word, Tesla bolted off toward the forest.
