September was being unusually warm and tame for England; the country was famous for rolling fogs and sudden drizzles. Marissa strutted onto the lawns of the castle grounds and flopped down on some mercifully dry grass, lazily and calm. Her stomach rumbelled, for she had not eaten recently, but she ignored the growls and looked out with glazed eyes.

Her parent's had taken her to Hogwarts early, because she had thrown a fit about how dirty the train was, but in reality she just wanted to escape, to leave the house and never come back until it was absolutly nessecary. She knew the teachers were looking at her odd, but then again she didn't mind their stares, so long as it was no a judgement on her body, her beauty, her face.

Another year, Lily Evans thought, looking around the endlessly rolling green grass. Another year surrounded by magic, friends, endless tomes fll of the most entralling things - and another year away from her rather intolerant sister. It was sad, when one sister hated another, but she would have to deal with it. Toss her the Chronicles of Narnia and it'd be out of her mind in an instant. Whether she was a bookworm or just easily distracted - well, that's up to you to decide. It worked, which was all that mattered.

A strong gust of wind, the first that day, came out of nowhere, blowing the very loosely-fitting beanie right off her red hair. "Wha-?" It took a moment to register to her what had happened, so deep in thought was she, so she merely stood and watched it fly away, the wind catching it in just the right way. After a moment, the stun fell from her eyes and she shot after it, her robe billowing out behind her. There was a figure, some ways ahead. "Hey!" Lily shouted. "Mind my hat!"

Eyes closed, Marissa had almost dozed off when a voice echoed around the Grounds. She started awake only to be beaned in the head with ... a hat. Completly bewildered, she pulled it off her face and stared at it bemused, before looking up for the sorce of said hat. There was no one around, but then a voice reached her ears and she spun almost 180 degrees to see a red-hair girl about her age running pell-mill for her. And the hat, Rissa supposed.
She stood up and stretched, before wandering over to the girl. "Yours, I believe." She said lazily. In essence, it was a stupid, obvious, pretentious thing to say, but Marissa had learned the trick to sounding alluring; you acted like you were not even concerned.

"I thought I was the only one who was here." Marissa continued, meandering back to her seat and flopping down. She patted the ground next to her, a silent peace offering if the girl disliked Slytheirnes. Rissa was almost certain she had seen this girl before. "I'm Marissa Eveglion, or Rissa. You're parents dump you here to?"

Gravity pulled Lily faster down the hill than she had meant to go, but by some miracle, she managed to keep from from tripping over her feet. When she finally reached the base, the girl that was standing there was holding her hat. Lily was about to answer when she realized she couldn't breathe, and dropped her hands to her knees, panting to keep from passing out. When she had enough air to speak, and the spots were gone from her eyes, Lily managed, "Yes, it is, thank you."

"Seems not," she replied with a small smile, taking her hat back. She sat down beside the girl, glad for a chance to catch her breath again. "Lily Evans. In a way - there was a lot of...tension, you could say, back home." Her sister, Petunia, was caught between ignoring her and insulting her at every turn because of her magic. The other week, the two had been caught in a shouting match, and when Lily had fled to her room and her parents had ordered Petunia to leave the house, at least for a few hours, she'd replied with a Why should I? I live here, too, and sauntered to her own room. The next morning, Lily had offered to her parents to leave for Hogwarts early, to avoid further arguments, since Petunia had no such chance to get away.

Lily sighed, pulling herself back to the present. "You?" she asked to girl, who had introduced herself as Marissa.

Too early for most students to arrive, James Potter found himself at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Normally, James would not have been the one to arrive early, being exactly on time would have even surprised him, as well, yet there he was. He wasn't exactly sure why. His parents didn't mind him leaving early, and he was looking forward to the castle, but at times like these, when he felt as if he was the only one there, it was quite difficult. He missed his friends, especially Sirius, and their late night gatherings and all the trouble they caused, but he doubted they'd be here, especially now.

The weather was strange, well strange for the people in England, such as James. He'd expected winds and rain, yet there was none of that except some sun and soft breezes; quite delightful. Strolling outside, he examined the beautiful green surroundings. As a surprisingly harsh wind blew, he raised an eyebrow. Hearing distant noises, he quickened his pace.

Down the hill, he discovered the source of the noise. Two figures; one redhead. A smirk found it's place on his face and James continued down.

"I thought I was the only one who was here."

"Definitely not," shouted James, approaching them. Getting close enough to see the faces of the girls, he ran his fingers through his hair. Smiling at the redhead, he raised an eyebrow. "Lily Evans, what seems to bring you to this castle so early?" he asked. Lily Evans, Lily Evans, Lily Evans. What a pleasant surprise it was; seeing the love of James's life right there. Had she changed her mind about him, deciding to give him a chance?

Turning his attention towards the other girl, he grinned. "'elo there, I'm James, James Potter."

"You alright there?" Marissa inquired archly, hiding a smile. Not to take perverse pleasure in someone elses pain, but this girl looked like she was about to faint. "Lily Evans of Griffendor? I've seen you around. Your best friend Severus helps me out with some potions work. Well, he did, at any rate."

"Me? Felt like leaving the manor for a change." With all the arrogance of a well-bred girl, Marissa stretched her arms over her head, then reached down and touched her toes in a ballet move. She was lying, of course, but she wasn't open to anyone except her brother, and he ... well, it was better not to think of that.

Oh Merlin, she hated interruptions. Marissa sat up ramrod straight, her eyes aloof with eyebrows arched. "I know know you are." She said cooly. "Your the oaf who hates Slytherine, and has a bigger ego and head then gradepoint average."

"Yea, don't mind me," Lily said, her voice finally normal again. "Hurtling down a hill when you've hardly run in your life...it takes a bit out of you." She gave a half-smile, which instantly vanished when she heard an all-too-familiar voice. "Merlin, Potter, can't you take a hint?" she shouted crossly over her shoulder before burying her face in her knees. To Marissa, she hissed, "Please, please ignore him. Don't encourage him. He'll never leave otherwise." He never left in the first place, actually. She'd usually manage to avoid him during class and duck out and run before he managed to catch up, if she was lucky.

Continuing with what Marissa had said, Lily replied, "The one and only, 's'far as I know. Certainly would be strange to find out there another Lily Evans crawling about. Since you know Sev, I'll assume you're a Slytherin." She was one of those few Gryffindors who had absolutely nothing against Slytherins - it was required in a way, because Severus was one. That sometimes gave her immunity from the worst of the insults and teasings, but that didn't mean she wasn't affected by it.

Lily was fully aware of her eyes widening. "Manor?! Lucky you - we live in an old cottage in this village that no one knows exists." Much as she loved - adored, even - Spinner's End, it was a bit small, crowded, too personal.

Rissa laughed. "Yes, I told you that, but maybe you were huffing too hard." She admonished, not seriously. "Yeah, Severus is really nice, he talks about you all the time. Thinks the world of you, really. But something about him... She tapped her chin thoughtfully. "If I didn't know better, I would say he wasn't a Pure Blood. But he certainly gets along with the Purest." It occured to her that Lily, according to others, was Muggleborn, but it didn't bother her like it was supposed to.

Taking the hint from Lily, she turned her back fully on Potter. Not that she expected that to work. "Ohh, a cottage sounds so quaint! Mumsie has a cottage for painting, and dad has the study. Maybe you can visit in the summer, if we're not mortal enemies."

James grinned widely, shaking his hair from his eyes. "Of course you do, who doesn't, Eveglion," he said, loudly. "And actually, I don't hate Slytherins- well yes, i kinda do, "as my best friend comes from a family full of them, but I happen to dislike more than a fair amount of them. And actually, my grades are very fair, thank you very much. Although I do see your point." Rolling his eyes, James flicked an invisible piece of string from his shirt.

Coming closer, he shook his head, "Apparently not. So I'm guessing that's a no on the question I haven't even asked you yet?" he sneered. Evans had always turned him down, everytime he'd ask her to hang out or to go out, yet, as James's confidence was going through the roof, he didn't give up.

"Oh Severus Snape, the dimwit with a obsessive little crush on you. How's he doing, I'm looking forward to seeing him, I learned some new curses over the summer, I needed someone to test them out on," muttered Potter, with a smirk. He had a deep hate for Severus, ever since he met, of course, since he was a Slytherin and possibly because of his relationship with Lily. And of course he always did piss him off.

Lily clapped her hands ove rher ears, squeezing her eyes tightly shut. I will count to three, open my eyes, and when I do, James bloody Potter will not exist in any form on this planet, she told herself. One...two...three. She snuck a peek over her shoulder to check.

Still there. Damn!

"You can't say Black is very traditional when it comes to lineage - he's cursed quite a few from his own house, including his brother, if I remember correctly." Black and Potter, the insufferable duo.It might've been easier to survive if one of them wasn't forever after her. She mentally shuddered. When would he give up?

"Oh, you've asked me plenty enough for me to figure it out ahead of time," she shouted over her shoulder. "I think you hit a round fifty last year. Getting a head start this time? The answer's not changing anytime soon." Gone was the soft-spoken, easygoing Lily Evans of a few minutes ago - as she usually did, the minute Potter appeared on the radar, she'd gone cross, cold, and forbidding.

While the 'obsessive little crush' went over her head, the curses sent Lily to her feet and stomping up to James. "If you have an ounce of sense - which, unfortunately, I doubt - you will stay away from Severus. We've taken your bloody crap for too bloody long, and I'm sick and tired of it," she hissed, a threatening tone in her voice. She hated Potter on the best of days, but once he dragged Sev into the mix, it was on.

It was like watching a tennis match, a ferocious, vicious tennis match. Marissa’s head swiveled back and forth, completely fascinated and with a growing crick in her neck. She had to admit, Potter was an idiot on the best of days, she never knew him to be such a dickhead now. She almost wanted to intercede, but this was simply too much fun to watch. Where, oh where was a House-Elf and some popcorn?

Irksomely, he called her by her last name. Rissa HATED being addressed by her last name, unless it was absolutely necessary. “It’s probably too big a thing for your small brain to remember, but my name is Rissa.” She said coldly, now in full agreement with Lily. “And it doesn’t matter what your best friend is, how you treat us is pathetic. No wonder you can’t get a date. I pity the woman who ever marries you.

Physical threats on Severus? Marissa liked Sev, he was nice enough to her and he adored Lily, and she would be glad to help him out, but there was also the manner that if she stayed around Potter any longer, her IQ might just drop a few points. Almost lazily, she pulled out her wand. “I am so sick of this, Potter. Drop your ego and get lost, Lily and I were in a private conversation.

"Rissa, if he forgets that I don't want to see his face again, I doubt he'll remember something as trivial as a name," Lily drawled out, her arms crossed across her chest and fire burning in her emerald eyes. The minute her friends were brought into it, she was fighting...well, maybe not to kill, but to wound and scare off to the best of her ability. (Being slight as she was, it was difficult, until she managed to charm their head into toads or somehting of the like.)

Lily was literally thisclose to making a jibe about the real reason he couldn't get a date, but the giant squid in the lake chose that particular moment to send a particularly storng concussion along the surface of the lake and over the grass. Lily found herself completely soaked, her red hair laying lank and flat against her skin and her mouth open in shock. "That...was unexpected..." she coraked out.

Lily scoffed. "Marissa, judging by the apst five minutes, do you really think that's possible? Just try to ignore him. "She herself had perfected the skill. Pulling the water from her hair, she sat down again. "Where were we? A, yes, cottages! It really isn't a cottage, but it's close to the country and it's cozy enough, so I like to call it that. Force of habit, these days, really."

James nodded with a grin, "Yes he has, you remember correctly, but they all deserved it, his family isn't exactly the best," said James, with his teeth clenched. He knew how Sirius felt about his family and how they felt about him.

Glancing over at Marissa, James bit his lip and lower his head. "I'm sorry Rissa, I'll remember that," he said apologetically, choosing to ignore her insult. "I do now treat you all pathetically, just a fair amount because I know my fair amount of the dark arts and of some Slytherins' connection and I oppose to that. ANd just for the record, I get plenty of dates, well with women, thought not with the one I actually do love, so 'kay, thanks." Rolling his eyes, he ran his fingers through his hair in a poor attempt to fix it, though only making it worse.

James let out a chuckle and shook his head, "I'm sorry to hear that, but I think I hit more than fifty last year, though, you're the math whiz," -grin- "I do hope to get a higher number this year," he said raising an eyebrow. He wasn't sure why she kept denying him, he was nice to her, only not to her friend, Severus, but he was never going to be nice to someone involved with the dark arts as him.

James rolled his eyes and crossed his hands over his chest. "I'll try, but I don't guarantee anything." he whispered.

Glancing over at Marissa, he sighed. Opening his mouth to say something, he was cut off as a large splash escaped the lake and Lily was splashed. Almost immediately, he took off his thin jacket, ran to Lily's side, and handed it to her.

"Lily, are you okay?"

Marissa yawned widely, to show her disinterest in the conversation. It seemed odd that she had only met Lily a few moment ago, and yet she was firmly on her side, even though she knew James little better. Gender empowerment, she supposed, glancing over to the lake with bored eyes and absent-mindedly fixing her hair.

She turned to James with just the right upper-crust attitude that her mother had installed in her, and smiled patronizingly. "Well, the important thing is that you believe that." She said condensendingly, patting Jame's head as though he were a lying boy insisting on one of his tales.

Marissa threw her hands up in the air. "What the hell is the matter with you?" She cried impatiently. "She said no! She hates you! I'm starting to hate you! Can you please just leave us al-ARGH!"
The end of her speech was cut off by a scream as a giant wave of water crashed onto the leafy shore. Marissa was absolutly drenched, as was Lily, but then, Marissa was never one to care about others when her makeup was ruined.
"Oh my God!" She shrieked, plucking her shirt from her chest in great distress. "My hair! My makeup! Its absolutly ruined! Two hours it took, oh damnit!"

Lily rolled her eyes at James. He wasn't giving up, that was apparent. She'd done all she could to get him off her back - she dated a boy a year older, about two years ago, but it had done little. In the first year of the obsessive crush, she'd attempted to get him to like someone else, but to little avail. "Pity she hates your guts," Lily said coldly, pulling a rubber band out of her pocket and pulling her hair up. "Try someone else - I'll be happy to do anything to get you off my tail." She really and truly meant it, too.

"Does it matter? Point is, you're annoyingly stubborn and irritating to be within a mile radius of." Lily shook back her still-damp hair and glanced at Marissa, eyes slightly widened, followed by the smallest of smirks. "See, Rissa, seems like a bad idea to spend so much time on your appearence. What's the point? I'm sure you look amazing without all that makeup and whatever."

Lily never understood while people had invented makeup. A bit of coverup, she could understand, but who wants purple lips and pink eyelids? Not herr, at any rate. And that was ignoring the fact that it would clash outlandishly with her bright hair.
