Helcaraxë
An icy waste between Aman and Middle-earth, this pack ice in the northern Sea of Belegaer is how Fingolfin and his people reached Middle-earth.

Lammoth

Located in the very northwest of Beleriand, Lammoth is one of the first regions those approaching Middle-earth by sea would view. The Battle of Lammoth, fought between Fingolfin's Ñoldorin host and orcs sent by Morgoth to attack Fëanor, took place in the very early First Age here.

Hithlum

Separated from Nevrast by mountains, Hithlum curves northward and westward to meet with Helcaraxë. So far to the north and off the coast, its climate is cold and wet. It became the realm of the ruling Ñoldor living within Middle-earth. After the Battle of Unnumbered Tears this region remained permanently uninhabited by elves.

Tol Sirion

An island in the northern branch of the river Sirion, Tol Sirion was originally settled by Finrod to prevent Morgoth's armies from passing through the mountains into Beleriand. Afterwards Sauron turned it into a haven for his werewolves, calling it Tol-in-Gaurhoth.

Iron Mountains

A great mountain range in the north, the mountain range of Ered Engrin is well within Morgoth's reach of power: his fortresses and strongholds were found here.

The land surrounding the Iron Mountains to both north and south, the fell creatures that Morgoth created and bred live here. During the Siege of Angband, the Ñoldor armies set up encampments in this region though during Dagor Bragollach the entire area was ravaged.

Ard-galen

A wide, green plain to the north of Dorthonion and south of the Iron Mountains, it was ravaged during Dagor Bragollach and the Battle of Unnumbered Tears was also fought here. For much of the first age Fingolfin and later, Fingon's forces patrolled it from their fortress of Barad Eithel.

Dorthonion
Highlands located directly to the north of Beleriand, great pine forests enshroud most of the region. Its northeastern slopes were home to a fief gifted to the House of Bëor, though the region was overrun in the Dagor Bragollach by Morgoth's forces.

Lothlann
A plain in northeast Beleriand, Lothlann was watched over by light cavalry under the command of Maedhros, and later, Maglor with him to prevent Morgoth's creatures from crossing the plain into Beleriand from the fortress of Himring on the southwest border.

Nevrast

A coastal depression consisting of scattered woodlands and the occasional marshland, Nevrast offered a humid climate with mild winters to its elven inhabitants. Turgon created a kingdom here for the first century of the First Age, though was subsequently abandoned until Tuor returned. Originally inhabited by the Sindar, the Ñoldor settlers quickly intermingled with the initial population.

Falas

The coastal region in western Beleriand to the south of Nevrast, throughout the First Age Sindarin elves ruled by Círdan dwelled in the region, building the havens of Brithombar and Eglarest. The region was overrun by Morgoth shortly before the First Age's inception though re-established in later years. When the Havens were finally destroyed in the fifth century, its inhabitants fled to the Mouths of Sirion and the Isle of Balar.

Arvernien
Known as the Mouths of Sirion, Arvernien was found on the southwest coast of Beleriand's coastal front. The realm was founded after the fall of many of the great Elven realms in the later part of the First Age. Refugees from Gondolin, Falas and Doriath could all be found here.

Isle of Balar
Some seventy miles off the coast of Beleriand, the Isle of Balar was established first as an outpost by Turgon. After the destruction of Falas, the isle became a refugee camp for the survivors, led by Círdan, and remained in a close relationship with Arvernien.

Nargothrond

Originally an underground Dwarven city, Nargothrond was comprised of miles of caves and tunnels carved out of stone. Finrod established an elven kingdom there in the early years of the First Age. From the very beginning, the Elven community here fought against Morgoth, though not in open battle: It was only when council had been given to fight openly against Morgoth's fortresses was the city sacked.

Talath Dirnien

Known as the Guarded Plain, this empty land lay between Nargothrond and Doriath. While uninhabited, scouts and spies from both kingdoms constantly surveyed it. In the eastern part, the hill of Amon Rûdh stood.

Gondolin
A hidden city located in the northern part of Beleriand, Gondolin was founded by Turgon early in the First Age. Constructed in secret, once it was completed just after the end of the first century, Turgon's people - nearly a third of the Ñoldor in Beleriand and a large part of the Sindarin elves in the north - relocated from Nevrast to live in secret in Gondolin. It stood for nearly 400 years before it fell to Morgoth's dark forces.

Doriath

Founded during the Years of Trees, Doriath was the Sindar stronghold of their High King, Thingol. A reclusive realm, only with the elves of Nargothrond did Thingol remain in contact with. Doriath was protected from the outside world by the magic of his queen, one of the Maia. The holly forest of Region composed most of the kingdom and iit stood through the duration of the First Age although it was sacked twice: once by Dwarves and then by the sons of Fëanor.

Himlad

The land to the south of Himring, Himlad was held by Fëanor's sons Celegorm and Curufin throughout the First Age. This characteristically cool plain was used as an encampment for Ñoldorin forces throughout the Siege of Angband, though it fell during the Dagor Bragollach.

March of Maedhros
Consisting of a series of hills and plains, the March of Maedhros is to the south of Lothlann and lay between Dorthonion to the west and the Ered Luin to the east. Held by the Elven Lord Maedhros, the hilly eastern area provided the location for his fortress of Himring and Maglor's stronghold of Maglor's Gap. While it lacked natural fortification, the region was heavily defended throughout the First Age as a result of the frequent attacks from Angband.

Estolad
A large plain south of both Himlad and Nan Elmoth, during the First Age Estolad was held by Amrod and Amras, youngest sons of Fëanor. The people of Bëor came to Estolad on advice from Finrod. The House of Haleth also came to settle here, along with the House of Marach. All three houses of the Edain lived in Estolad during the First Age.

Thargelion
During the First Age Thargelion was ruled by Caranthir, one of Fëanor's sons. The Dwarf-Road passed through its southern tip, making it fairly heavily trafficked. The men of the House of Haleth lived here briefly before they were beset upon by orcs and they moved further westward.

Amon Ereb
The highest point of the plains in the region, Ereb was fortified by Caranthir following the Dagor Bragollach in an attempt to guard a path to the south. After the Battle of Unnumbered Tears the sons of Fëanor reconvened in Ereb.

Ossiriand
The easternmost part of Beleriand, during the First Age Ossiriand was largely unpopulated by the Sindar. The Telerin elves who lived there were known as the Laiquendi. Seven rivers dissect the region, setting its topography apart from the other realms in the area.

Eldamar

The land of the Elves in Aman, this region encompasses the costal area east of the Pelóri mountains, the Pass of Light to travel inland, Tol Eressëa, and the region of Calacirian. It was here that all three factions of Elves came to settle.

Araman
Outside of the Pelóri mountains, Araman was the northern coastland of Aman on the north of the continent. Largely deserted, this region bridged Helcaraxë to Valinor and it was here that the Noldor first passed through on their journey to Beleriand.

Gardens of Lórien
Known as the most beautiful place in Arda, the Gardens are filled with flowers, lakes and willows. Inhabited by birds and spirits, Eldar and Maiar along with the Valar often visit to rest and rejuvenate themselves. The gardens are home to the Vala Irmo and Este, and it was here that Míriel's body remains.
