General Information Full Name: Nameless Codename: Janus (for the two faced god, regarding her alternate "faces"), Jade Dragon Other Names: Various aliases based on situation, but none are linked to her. Age: Mid-twenties, in theory. Gender: Female
Profile Nationality: Chinese Affiliation: Scorched Earth, Chinese Triads, with connections to the Yakuza, and other criminal organizations in Asia and Europe, including some of their customers and contacts. Birthdate: Unknown Birthplace: Somewhere in China Relations: No blood relations known
Note: Regarding her name, Nameless is called different things by different people. The Triad that originally took her called her Daughter. The one that had her trained did the same, but with a different meaning. A personal name has never a part of her identity, so she responds to what people choose to identify her as.
Physical Description: Nameless is a Chinese woman of average height (meaning among the taller Asians...keep in mind that the short ones are usually Japanese) and slender build. Her typical manner of dress is conservative, usually with long sleeves. She prefers flats or low heels to high heels. However, she is adept at changing her appearance with or without her ascendancy. Physically, she keeps her body relaxed, even during battle. Relaxed muscles let the qi (pronounced “chee”) flow, providing greater power than normal.
She has a long dragon tattoo on her right arm. The head rests on the dorsal surface of her forearm, hidden by long sleeves. The body coils loosely around her arm and extends across her trapezius with the tail hanging down over her left shoulder blade. The dragon’s feet are on the outside of her upper arm and over her right shoulder blade.
Personality: Nameless is always calm. In the heat of battle, her mind is the center of the storm that is her body. This practiced state allows her to flow easily both physically and mentally. She is hard and direct or playful and teasing as she needs to be, based on the situation. Her drives and motivations are unknown. One thing that is certain is her loyalty to the Triads, even as she works for Scorched Earth.
Capabilities Skills: Nameless has an impressive array of skills that can be boiled down to one word: Ninja. Well, Chinese ninja, anyway. She is very stealthy and very aware. Normal humans have great difficulty evading her trained senses. She is skilled in unarmed combat and various weapons. Entering and stealing are typically child’s play. She’s also very capable at blending in and playing roles to attain her objectives.
Ascendancy: Nameless has two specific powers. The first is projective empathy. The other is a limited form of sound and light control.
Projective Empathy. She is capable of projecting emotions to any number of people in her immediate area. This can be via her visual field, or a 15 meter radius centered on her. Selective target projecting is limited to half a dozen simultaneously. Blanket area projection is considerably easier. She is an empath, but is not required to feel what she’s projecting (and almost never does so), and can project any emotion at will, at virtually any intensity. She can make just about anyone feel they love her or hate their spouse and children. She can paralyze, or even kill particularly weak individuals, with fear. She can create desire and longing between other people with a glance, or blind entire mobs with rage. Needless to say, this ability alone can lend to great levels of manipulation.
The empathic portion of her powers also affords her an awareness of herself. It’s difficult to telepathically tamper with her mind without her knowing about it. Even if she can’t fight telepathically, she does seem able to send empathic assaults backwards over the connection. In this case, distance and sight don’t seem to be a factor as she uses the telepaths own connection to carry emotional disruptions back.
Control of light. At it’s most basic level, Nameless can suddenly or gradually increase or decrease the illumination within about five meters. She can also create visual illusions by shaping light. She can change her appearance or become invisible, hide an object, or even create a fantastical monster within her area of influence. Projecting images like this is more focused than controlling all the light in a given area, so her range is about 15 meters. The range and time she can hold the illusion are inversely proportional to the scale and quantity of each illusion. The more there are, the closer they have to be to her. Low grade illusions, like a minor facial appearance change on herself can be held as long as she’s conscious. Personal invisibility can usually be held for a couple minutes before she needs to catch her breath, but it’s pretty rare that she needs to go that long.
Control of sound. Sound control is pretty much the same. Simple sounds are easy to create at maximum range, about 15 meters. With focus, she can create words and sentences at about 10 meters. She can alter the volume of ambient sound the way she can affect the light level in an area. She cannot selectively alter specific existing sounds, though. It isn't known why, but her efforts to do so have met with consistent failure. Her most common uses of this power are delivering messages without being in the targets visual field, and enhancing her visual illusions.
She seems capable of using all her powers simultaneously, often to devastating effect. One of her favorite techniques seems to be making the dragon on her arm come alive to attack an individual while projecting fear at them.
Because these illusions are non-telepathic, telepathic ability offers no immunity. Conversely, blind people are completely immune to the visual, but not the audio, and vice versa for deaf people. While her body continually emits heat just like any other warm, living body, she’s capable of altering the visible wavelength with some concentration. Her standard invisibility only affects normally visible light.
Her ability to control light seems to require some basis of awareness of light. Nameless appears to be fully aware of her environment even in pitch darkness.
Weaknesses: The illusions don’t vanish with interaction, but they’re definitely not solid. Only sight and hearing can be directly affected. Anything else is based on subtle manipulations and human susceptibilities. Touch is the most obvious weakness in her illusion, followed by scent, and taste. But how many people lick a wall to see if it’s real?
If you’re an object, you’re pretty much immune to her projective empathy. Certain other people might be resistant, like masters of Buddhism or Taoism and skilled telepaths. She is by no means immune to telepathic abilities, but she is trained to be resistant and aware. A powerful, skilled telepath probably wouldn’t have too much trouble getting in. What happens after that is a different matter. Nameless is trained to hide whatever secrets she does carry deep within her mind. The most obvious effect of this is the time it takes even a skilled telepath to find sensitive information is more than enough for Nameless to return an assault.
Personal History: Nameless was taken by the Triads as an infant. She doesn’t know her birth name or her biological parents, and lacks formal public education. Her earliest memories are of the Triads. Her story is the classic case of having been adopted and raised by a fairly ranking, though not top, individual within the Triads. He arranged for private instruction in education because knowledge is power and having a dunce around would only be useful once as a very definite waste of potential. Originally, she was to succeed him upon his death.
When her ascendancies manifested, one of the highest ranking caught wind and took her to get better training than she could otherwise have had. Some of their own ascendants were able to help in that area. She was also trained in her skills, and proved to be exceptional.
Upon reaching adulthood, she became one of the outward faces for the Triads. She could easily change her appearance and so escape attention from the authorities and even vengeful gangs. She often handled negotiations, trade deals, acquisitions (legal and otherwise), international message delivery (between cells, to clients, etc), and executions (inside and outside the organization). She’s also participated in negotiations with other powers like the Japanese Yakuza, and Russian and Italian Mafias. With experience, she learned to better control her ascendancy and found increasingly more subtle ways to apply it.
It was on an acquisition task that she encountered a member of Scorched Earth, though she didn’t know it at the time. Oddly, they were both after the same thing. The other agent procured the item first, but she managed to take it from him following a brief but invigorating game of Cat and Mouse...and some less than subtle emotional manipulation. Whether or not this was viewed as a failure for the Scorched Earth agent is unknown to Nameless, and irrelevant. What is known is that Scorched Earth somehow found out or figured out she was an agent for the Triads and sought a trade. An agent of her caliber and ability would be useful. While her boss wasn’t willing to give her up, he was willing to loan her out for considerable money along with the agreement that there would be future mutually beneficial business deals between Scorched Earth and the Triads, and the Triads could recall her if they needed her. Oddly, neither side put any restrictions on the intelligence she shared with either party.
