Gently grasping the soft leather reins, Amaya guided the screwbald mare down the dusty slop, through the pine trees that leaned upwards against the steep hilltop. The trail wound side to side, slow ascending the plummit downwards. Far down the in valle could be seen small, pale triangles, with wisps of smoke rising from their tips. The teepee's were framed by long, heavy branches, and across the branches were stretched tightly animal hide- decorated with wild animals painted on the, or embroidered on with dyed sinew. The flaps for doors were of the thick, heavy hide from the back of a bison, as were her boots. She could just barely see the racks by the outdoor fires- with fresh hide stretched across them and drying. Other racks held strips of animal flesh, or small, salty fish. Groups of horses stood quietly around the camp- most were loose and grazed beside the camp- uninterested in escape. Some other horses were tied to posts in the ground- these were younger, green horses. A few skinny dogs were sometimes seen skittering through the small tent camp- playing with each other or making off with an old cow bone. Sheep and goats were off on the horion, guided by children with long sticks and a dog- they were take the livestock to fresher grazing grounds, to leave the rest for the cows and horses. The cows were watched by an adult, and not lead so far as the goats and sheep.
This scenery was her home, and to it she nudged her mount to move more swiftly to. A few rabbits lay across the rump of Virtue- she had been out checking traps, and was lucky enough to find a few, fat hares. Rabbit meat is fatty and filling- even if there isnt alot like there would be on a large beast. The furr would prove useful for childrens boots or mittens. Paceing down the dirt path that lead through the center of the small village, she slid off the bare back of her mare, carrying the rabbits she tied Virtue to a post, and walked over to a fire where a small group of women were stretching hide across racks, and stripping meat from a groundhog.
