Stephen Hawking speaks out in favour of assisted suicide

Scientist Professor Stephen Hawking has spoken out in favour of assisted suicide for people with terminal diseases.

Prof Hawking, who has motor neurone disease (MND), had previously been less supportive of the right to die, saying it was a mistake as “there is always hope”.

In an interview which will reignite the heated debate surrounding euthanasia, the 71-year-old cosmologist told the BBC: “We don’t let animals suffer, so why humans?”

Stephen Hawking speaks out about assisted suicide

UK cosmologist Prof Stephen Hawking has publicly said he backs the notion of assisted suicide for people with terminal illnesses.

In an interview with the BBC he said: “We don’t let animals suffer, so why humans?”

Prof Hawking, who has progressive motor neurone disease, has in the past been less candid about the idea, saying “while there’s life, there’s hope”.

Euthanasia can be active or passive. Active euthanasia is the action of directly causing the quick and painless death of a person, while passive euthanasia is omitting to prevent it when intervention was within the agent’s powers.
