The kit is lacking in internal detail in the cockpit and U/C wheel wells but hopefully will still build into a decent representation of the prototype.

looking good not seen any of these made.

Les Moore - September 1, 2011 07:28 PM (GMT)
I should probably have my Trumpeter 1/32 Bearcat transferred over here. I also have a Roden kit in progress and soon a couple Hobby Boss and Zvezda Russian Helicopters as well. So many models so little time.

Have waited till the kids went back to school before I attempt to use my airbrushes for the first time, hopefully this week.

In the meantime a couple of pictures of another little project, namely an Airfix Spitfire Vb in 1:24 scale:

Back in January I spent a few pounds on the following piece of kit:

user posted image

Only trouble was I have never used a airbrush before, bought some books (not very usefull) my main concern was cleaning the bleeding thing as I didn't want to render it useless after it's first use.

This week I bit the bullet bought some Tamiya acrylics and the other evening had a go. Problem 1, How do you open Tamiya acrylics ? :fp: I twisted the top untill I thought I was going to have a hernia, the lid wouldn't budge! checked to see if it was a push down lid or child proof - no, I'd bought 5 pots, 3 X-2 and 2 XF-2, couldn't open any of them, contacted LMS who told me they are normal screw top but can be stiff !!! (understatement) resorted to boiling the kettle and carefully pouring hot water on the cap success :yipee:

Had a bit practice the other night eventually got a bit more competent with distance from model, adjusting paint flow, cleaned it and put it away until tonight.

Pulled out the CF105 and decided to give it some whellie.

user posted image

Quite happy with the outcome so far, it's identified where a bit more filler is needed and I'll need to rub the paint back in a couple of places.

Did a bit on the B1 ordinance and that put paid to two of the three pots of X-2 so I calling it a night, will try and get some more done tomorrow.

Dirkpitt289 - October 21, 2011 01:35 AM (GMT)
have you had time to try out your new compressor and airbrush yet? :woo:

Johni044 - October 21, 2011 03:37 PM (GMT)
Yep, the top of the Arrow has been airbrushed That was my first attempt, bit sanding back to do where the brush was too far from the subject and the paint dried before it hit the plane, the first coats also indicated where more filler and sanding was required. Airbrushing certainly highlights these imperfections more than using my old hairy stick.

Then did the SRAM's on the B-1 with better results. It all takes practice I suppose.

Mop_the_Panda - October 21, 2011 04:02 PM (GMT)
Looking good :)

You have same compressor as me (not used mine yet after around 6 weeks! )

Johni044 - October 21, 2011 04:12 PM (GMT)
I got mine around Febuary :( , Have yet to try in with enamels but now got a face mask so hopefully soon I'll get some Hu125 on the wings. Minor annoyance is that the bridge of my glasses does not fit over the nose of the mask so vision is somewhat impaired <_< .

Results are worth the effort though Dave just need to bite the bullet. We have nothing to fear except etc etc.

DH764 - October 21, 2011 08:54 PM (GMT)
Thats exactly the same set I started with , I still use the compressor , bit noisy but works a treat.
I used the brush for the first time in anger on this as it was a very simple colour scheme ...Black , Acrylic Hu85 .

Only tips I can give are ....dont be afraid of the brush and dont be afraid to make mistakes .....if we dont make mistakes , we dont make anything .
I found that practising on an A3 sketch pad was very helpful.

Earlier this year I made an Airfix Mosquito J30 for an ATF group build, The kit camee from a D Day anniversary so I have extracted the remaining three and made a start on them, this is the progress to date on the Beaufighter, Typhoon and Mustang.

Aiming to get these finished by the end of the year, not quite Les's production rate but I'll be happy if I succeed.

Going great guns,I always liked this model my brother had it ,it had BAOC markings.IMHO I think it looks best in these.
Dave :pop:

peebeep - February 3, 2012 12:46 AM (GMT)
The proposed BOAC scheme came with the original kit, but that was in the prototype configuration. A new tool kit was released some time after to reflect production aircraft, but I don't think this ever came with the BOAC scheme - a pity.

If you want the BOAC scheme you need to search out this boxing:

I'm contemplating doing the BOAC scheme on one of the 1/72 kits as 'production standard'. I have seen such a build at a show and it looks very striking:

Tried making that twice in my youth, gave up both times due to the fit of the fuselage and wings. Might try again one day, hopefully have the ability now to knock it into shape.

So....does this mean that lightning can strike twice in the same place...?? :woo: :woo:

Johni044 - March 10, 2012 11:23 PM (GMT)

I think all Lightnings could only strike twice, they never carried more than 2 missiles :grins:

:D Poetic liscence Paul, some didn't have any though.

A bit further forward on both, but the 11 squadron machine is sneaking ahead by a radar bullet. Camo applied and glossed, although NMF areas not started yet.
