Lumen smile faded into a look of seriousness. He knew the man was lying, but he didn't know it was an intentional test. Lumen was oblivious to it the whole time. This man had Lumen in check contrary to what he had early believed. No ordinary man-no, this man was far from ordinary, but none the less Lumen would not be beaten at his own game; this man was arrogant if he thought he could beat Lumen at his own game. Quickly, Lumen shifted his thinking to the offensive. If this man was lying to him, he must have had a reason for it other than just self-gratification.
Lumen eyed him with assiduity, looking for anything-a key word, a facial movement, a gesture. Yes, a gesture! Lumen jumped mentally when he caught notice of the man adjusting his collar. There was no reason for him to adjust a straightened collar; true it was common for a person to do this subconsciously when nervous, but this man clearly had his composure. Maybe he was just being presumptuous thinking this man was giving him a sign, but he was willing to take a chance on it.
What could this sign he was given be for? His mind flashed to what the man said earlier. He had stated that he was here to meet somebody. Lumen believed this much was true at the least as this was before the lie he gave Lumen was stating. This coupled with when he said "I wish they had given me a description" made him assume that he was here to meet somebody he had no familiarity with, most likely ordered by an organization or something. To add to the matter, he invited Lumen to sit down with him despite him saying he was meeting somebody and he even told him to get something to drink. When waiting for somebody at a cafe, you don't invite a person you are not waiting for to sit down with you, unless of course you are informing the person coming that you will have somebody with you. However, Lumen was the one that approached him, not the other way around, and if the two people meeting did indeed not know which each other looked like, the person coming would quickly assume that this man was not the person he was looking . The only conclusion that Lumen could reach was that he was testing to see if Lumen was in fact the person he was waiting for and that this was a sign of some sort.
"I came here to meet somebody, however I have no idea of what they look like." He lied. "Perhaps it is you?" he asked, before he copied the same gesture and reached his hand up towards his neck to adjust his shirt collar. If Lumen was wrong about his assumptions, he would just get up and walk away like nothing happened. This man would probably not follow him if he was here to meet somebody else. The only consequence would be that he would appear socially awkward, but Lumen couldn't care less about what other people thought of him.
