Time: December the 1st, 16:46 PM
Location: A training field in Sunagakure

Yutori Karasu cursed under his breath as both his puppets fell into the sand, whipping up small clouds that were soon carried away by the wind. He was in a training field in the outskirts of time, the setting sun providing a coolness that had always helped him concentrate. Despite being born and raised in a desert, Karasu had never loved the burning sun. That’s why he avoided training during the middle of the day when the desert heat reached its climax. No, the young puppeteer only trained in the afternoon.

And he had spent a lot of afternoons here the last few weeks, training. Trying to reach the level he once had. As a puppeteer, Karasu was less dependant on hand seals than most shinobi. With that in mind he had begun to train, hoping to improve his skill to the point where he could use both his puppets with one hand. It was possible, theoretically. Chiyo-baasama, one of the village’s greatest puppeteers, had been capable of controlling a puppet with one finger only. Having only one hand meant he could only control up to five ever in his life, but five was already more than most puppet-using shinobi could manage.

The problem; it was taking too long.

Before the incident in Kawa no Kuni, Gokonsurikire had been ruthlessly drilling Hyouka, Chouko and him to compete in the chuunin exams in Hyouga, now slightly more than a week away. The redhead had felt as prepared as ever, and every bit of him had truly wanted to compete in those exams. But with only one arm, the amount of puppets he could control had been brought down to one. And with the majority of puppeteers of his level and age being able to control two at least, Karasu simply wasn’t formidable enough to compete.

What made things worse was that he would often see Gokonsurikire drilling Hyouka and Chouko. While he was happy he wasn’t dragging both of them down, he still felt really jealous.

That was his reason for being here. But with the exams so close and his process going nowhere, he was about to give up hope. Controlling two puppets with both hands was already hard enough to the point where it occupied most of, if not all of his attention. He was simply processing too slowly.

”Damnit...”, Karasu sighed as he picked Dodo and Watari up from the sandy ground.

Komakai had a lot of free time on his hands as of late. Since his team had disbanded he really had been just sitting around his house most of the time. Tinkering on his puppets, trying to improve them with what resources he had. But due to his lack of missions he didn’t have the funds to improve his current ones. Or worst of all he couldn’t make new ones, and he was nowhere close to complete his puppet armor idea. He was in a rut, but he tried not to let it get him down.

With his free time it did give him a chance to improve his skills with his current puppets. He had even made progress in using two of his puppets at the same time. And while he had some kinks to work out, he pretty much had the hang of it. But that didn’t mean he could stop training anytime soon, the road to Kazekage was still a long one. And he wasn’t going to get anywhere sitting around his house. There was also something he couldn’t get at his house, something he had been lacking for too long.

The sight of a ladies.

With that motivation in mind he packed up his things and rushed out of his home. Spotting many pretty girls on the way, and acting his normal Komakai self around them. “Oh ladies, even in a desert, the prettiest flowers still bloom~!” He shouted as he headed towards the training grounds. Ladies loved it when he came back sweaty after a training period….or at least that’s what he told himself anyway. Komakai has had as much luck with ladies as he does with seeing over kitchen counters. Somedays he figured it be easier to become Kazekage than get a girlfriend.

As the dwarf walked towards the training field he noticed he was not alone. Before him was what seemed to be another puppeteer, although he seemed to be having problems. He walked toward the other sand ninja, and gave a small wave. “Yo, having some puppet problems are you?” He noticed the boy was missing an arm, he didn’t really care all that much. But Komakai never missed an opportunity to make a joke. “Could I offer you a….hand. It looks like you need one.” He said with a small chuckle. God he was hilarious.

As Karasu, bent over his puppets, attached new chakra strings to the wooden combat dolls, he heard a voice calling out to him. ”Yo, having some puppet problems are you?”, it said. The redhead looked up to see what he thought would’ve been an academy student judging by his size, if not for his voice which was too deep and low for a child that age.

”Could I offer you a…..hand. It looks like you need one.”, the short guy said with a chuckle in his throat, probably thinking he was being funny. With that, Karasu’s first impression of the guy had been set: annoying. Considering the trouble his hand, or rather his lack of it, was giving him, the dwarf’s joke didn’t go very well.

”Ha. Ha. Ha. Very funny, shortstuff!”, Karasu replied sarcastically. ”If your trying to help, could you at least do so without being a pain in the ass?” To be fair, the redhead’s rebuke wouldn’t be very inviting for the sunglass-wearing guy to go and help him out. It was just that the puppeteer was in a bad mood.

Looking at his puppets and his own sorry state, he realized some help would indeed be welcome. Perhaps some tips or even a spar mate. Right now both his puppets were standing up straight. That much he could manage with one hand. But once his dolls started moving, the trouble began. Their movements were slow and laggy, and every time he tried to activate one of their traps he would lose control.

”Okay, sorry for that.”, he forced himself to say to the wisecracker before he could leave. ”That rebuke was a bit too much. My arm is just a bit of a sensitive subject, okay? In truth, I could use some help, if you don't mind...”

Komakai still thought his joke was pretty funny. Even though it looked like the other boy didn’t find it as hilarious. It was obvious that the guy before him didn’t have much of a sense of humor, as his comeback was terrible. “Shortstuff? That isn’t even an insult.” For someone who had been bullied quite a bit in his life, shortstuff wasn’t even close to the terrible words he had been called. Hell almost sounded like a compliment. “Look a good insult would have been something like…..How’s the weather from down there. Or I bet your not a good ninja, cause you always come up short……things like that.”

When the other boy apologized for his attempt at an insult he smiled. “I guess I should say sorry. I apologize that you didn’t find the humor in my joke. Also sorry that it also was a tad insulting.” Komakai normally wouldn’t apologize for one of his hilarious jokes, but he had a lack of friends at the moment, so he figured insulting random people wouldn’t be the best way of gaining any. “I’ll help you out though, it’ll be good. I was just about to work the kinks out of my puppets.”

Komakai reached into his pockets and pulled out two scrolls, and unraveled them. If there were a lady present he would have done it in an unnecessary cool looking way. But since it was just the boy that was watching he didn’t feel the need. He placed them on the ground and with a simple hand sign activated the seal. And in suddenly a large puff of smoke surrounded the dwarf. “The best way to work out kinks in ones puppets is nothing but trial and error.” Once the smoke cleared his two puppets were standing in front of him, his skeleton puppet and his dragon puppet looked rather clean….it had been awhile since they were used for anything. “Names Komakai by the way. This is Skeleton and Dragon, they’re not at the levels I want them to be. But I really don’t have the funds to improve them. But that’s neither here nor there, let’s begin, and since I’m a generous guy I’ll even let you have the first move.” Komakai connected chakra strings to both of his puppets, and waited for the other puppeteer’s first move.

Karasu didn’t like the little guy. He seemed oblivious to the obvious sign that the redhead’s insult was a release of his anger rather than a cruel attempt at actually striking a nerve or an attempt to be witty. In a way he was surprised he actually managed to wring an apology out of him. Nevertheless Karasu was happy when the boy offered him is help. His interest peaked when he heard the words puppets, the redhead watched closely as he took out two scrolls. Despite his dislike of the boy, he was always interested at seeing other puppeteers at work.

And this young puppeteer’s works were not bad, at least in the looks department. In spite of his handicap, Karasu was suddenly feeling like a spar. He was interested at seeing what these impressive-looking puppets had in terms of hidden traps. ”Karasu.”, he replied to Komakai upon hearing his name and the introduction to his puppets. His mouth twisted into a cocky smile. ”And these are Watari and Dodo! Thanks for your generosity, but you are going to regret it!”

And with that, Karasu made his move. The defense-oriented Dodo remained by his side as Watari flew forward, dashing over the sand like a wooden angel of death. As it was about ten feet away from the dwarf, two shortswords appeared from its palm as the lower parts of its arms. It stretched both its arms and pointed them toward the dwarf before the lower arms, down from the elbow, disconnected and shot forward. Driven by a small engine near the elbow joint they had turned into two poisoned, bladed projectiles going straight toward Komakai.

So far so good..

Karasu’s plan? By aiming a move directly at Komakai he hoped the dwarf would defend by simply placing one of his puppets in the arm’s line. That would also mean placing it directly between Watari and Komakai. While two pierce “wounds” meant nothing to both Dragon and Skeleton, what followed would be a stream of fire coming from both arms, or what was left of them still attached to Watari. Once either of the dry wooden puppets got hit with the fire, they would continue to burn down rapidly leaving Komakai in a disadvantage of one puppet against two.

What actually happened? The flames that shot from the arm’s reached about a foot before they stopped again. Keeping two puppets mobile and activating two traps with only one hand had proven too much, and Watari fell to the ground, harmless.

”SONOVABITCH!”

Komakai tried not to laugh at the name of the one puppet. “Dodo? Really?” Before he could say something witty, he was cut off by Watari going on the move. Komakai didn’t have that much time to react so he summoned his Skeleton puppet to act as a shield. And for added safety he jumped on Dragon and the dragon puppet began to flap its wings slowly making the dwarf air born. It seemed that the other puppeteer’s plan of attack didn’t go as planned as the fire it shot out seemed to be effective. Although the flammable Skeleton still got a little flame on it’s arm, and before it spread Komakai detached the right arm of the puppet and it fell to the ground.

Komakai now air born looked below him and looked at the battlefield below him analyzing the situation. “Don’t be embarrassed, fire dysfunction happens to the best of us sometimes.” Komakai said with a devious grin. “And look, now you and my puppet are twins.” The dwarf began to laugh, “Cause you know…you both are missing an arm. Oh I slay me.” Komakai normally wasn’t this mean to people, unless their name was Kazuma. He didn’t know why he was being such a jerk, he thought it was hilarious of course, but still a jerk. But he’d figure that out later, right now he had to think about the battle at hand.

“But now, let me show you a real fire attack.” With a flick of his right hand Dragon’s mouth opened up, and from a nozel inside it’s mouth a jet of fire shot forth right at the other puppeteer. It wasn’t a wide spread stream of fire, but hopefully it would either catch Karasu or one of his puppets. There was a slight breeze though, so the aim of the flame wasn’t as true as Komakai would have wanted.

The dwarf’s moves were a lot better than his puns. Karasu hadn’t expected the puppet to be able to fly with Komakai on its back, a trick he found most impressive. It was definitely a gadget worth considering when he would make a new creation. The disconnect able arm was an older trick in the book, but still provided a good counter against Watari’s half-assed flamethrower. His pun, however, prevented Karasu from fully respecting Komakai as a fellow puppet master. ”Which part of “my arm is a sensitive subject” was too hard for him to comprehend?!”

His next words put Karasu on guard. With Watari lying close to the training field and out of his control, he had lost the only puppet capable of soaking up a fire attack. Watari could unleash water through the holes and crevices of its body to extinguish fire in case it caught flame. Dodo had no such powers, and while it was a defensive-oriented puppet fire was definitely a weakness.

However the wind blowing made it significantly easier for Karasu do both dodge the stream of flame and pull Dodo out of the way. He looked as the intense flames hit the ground and made sand rise into a yellowish cloud. Karasu could feel the heat from over here. ”Okay, perhaps you aren’t short of tricks.”, he said in a lame attempt to hit him back with an insulting pun. ”But neither am I!”, he said as he sent Dodo up into the sky to meet the dwarf.

In truth, sending the defensive Dodo in for attack was a sign that things weren’t going good. The puppet was slower than Watari and had less options to attack. If this attack failed he would need to sprint towards Watari and regain control. But that meant getting closer to Skeleton than he liked, who was still a few feet away from Watari.

As for Dodo, when the puppet came close enough to Komakai, it’s right hand would attempt to scratch the dwarf with a horizontal sweep. What made this lethal was the fact that Dodo had kunai for nails. Poisoned kunai. And what gave it an extra surprise factor was that the kunai were attached to wires that ran through the fingers into the hands. When the puppet rotated its body and brought its arm back before initiating the swing, Karasu deactivated the locks on the fingers. Thus, when the puppet performed its wide horizontal swipe, the momentum would cause the strings to expand. The kunai would dangle at their end, increasing the reach of the swipe with two meters. Had the dwarf chosen to dodge the attack by having his puppet move back, the puppet twisting its body to the side easily indicating it was about to throw a punch of sorts, then he would definitely be scratched as the sudden increase in reach of the swipe would come as a surprise. And once he was scratched, Karasu would have the upper hand. The poison on the blades would paralyze his entire body in a matter of minutes, meaning Karasu would only have to stall the Komakai until the venom started to spread.

The dwarf puppet master didn’t miss a beat in a come back to Karasu’s comment. “Which part of your arm is sensitive subject? I guess it would be the part that’s missing wouldn’t it?” Komakai missed this little back and forth insults that he used to have with Kazuma. Not that he would ever admit it of course. Karasu’s pun did earn a chuckle from Komakai. “Good one.” He said with a little smile.

But what was an even better one was the next attack on Komakai. He assumed that the puppet that now was on the move was a more defensive one, which worked in Karasu’s advantage since Komakai didn’t figure it would go on the attack at all. So it had the element of surprise on it’s side. Quick to act Komakai commanded his dragon to move him away from the scratch. But unknown to Komakai was the extended Kunai fingers. He brought his left arm to his from to block the scratch, which was a bad move as it really hurt. And Komakai figured the pain wasn’t the least of his worries.

As a fellow Puppetmaster Komakai knew that most puppet’s attacks had some poisonous side-effect. And Komakai could already feel that he was losing feeling in his arm. So he took a drastic action he pulled out a kunai and slashed his shoulder causing it to bleed intensely. Which would stop the poison from flowing but it meant that he was now short an arm, and might die of blood loss. “Well played, you made me lose an arm. But don’t get ahead of yourself. Even though I’m missing an arm I’m still not low enough to be at your level.” Komakai was trying to be cocky but his arm friggin hurt. And he was a little light headed already. He commanded his Dragon puppet to slowly bring him back to the ground. He was in no shape to deal with flying right now. Once he was landed he hopped off his puppet and took a few steps back. “Alright, let’s bring this puppet show to an end shall we?” He could still control one puppet easily with one hand. He commanded skeleton puppet to fly towards Karasu, in which it would quickly open it’s mouth. And spray out a cloud of poisonous gas. He hid behind his Dragon puppet just incase of a counter attack .

Karasu had to suppress a cheer when the metal blades scratched Komakai’s arm. Even though this was a situation where he was left with no other choice, using a puppet oppositely from the strategy it was designed for could sometimes yield positive results. Even if the puppet in question was less able in that field of combat, merely the act of using it in an unexpected way could cause confusion in an opponent and mess up their strategy. It was a mind game. And like most mind games they were risky and could drastically backfire but could also be very effective when applied correctly and at the right moment.

The dwarf’s next action surprised Karasu. He cut his own arm, removing the poison from the bloodstream but causing heavy bleeding in return. The time it would take for him to bleed to death from such a wound was indeed more than the time it would take for the poison to fully spread, but it also posed a much greater risk as the poison Karasu applied to all his weapons had a paralyzing effect. Only in large overdoses would it prove deadly. Either Komakai assumed Karasu was out to kill him, or he was very determined to win a mere sparring match.

Dodo was already down by the time Komakai send his puppet out. This time the same one that lost its arm earlier in the fight. Part of what made a puppet master so deadly is that one could never be completely sure what kind of trap would be coming for them. It was all up to the puppeteer’s creativity. This was one of those situations. If Skeleton would use a projectile attack such as poisoned kunai or senbon then blocking them with Dodo would be the best course of action as it created a perfect scenario for a counterattack. If the next attack would be another flamethrower than dodging would be the superior option since he wouldn’t want his last puppet to burn to ashes.

Assuming Komakai would prefer a more diverse range of weapons and as such wouldn’t have two flamethrower-wielding puppets, Karasu decided to move Dodo’s large frame between itself and the advancing Skeleton. The redhead was right in his assumption, but that didn’t mean he countered correctly.

”Damnit!”, he cursed as the poisonous gas surrounded him, bypassing Dodo with ease. Too late did he realize drawing breath would be fatal. And while Komakai had the option to cutting his arm, Karasu cutting his throat or lungs was out of the question. As the purple-ish smoke cleared, Komakai would find Karasu’s body lying in the sand, twitching and paralyzed, Dodo lying a few meters in front of him.

”I could’ve won with both arms.. damnit..”

Komakai was victorious, not that he was surprised or anything he was pretty great. The battle did cost him, as his arm was really bleeding out now, but he decided to put that aside for the moment and comfort his opponent. He did feel kind of bad for the guy, he knew what it was like to be faced with a disability. It wasn’t an easy thing to live with, especially if you are a shinobi. Komakai walked over to his fellow puppeteer, as he lay there paralyzed by his brilliant poison. “What does the amount of arms you have matter? When I beat you I could only use one arm. The puppet I used to defeat you only had one arm. It’s the amount of skill you have, not that amount of limbs.” Komakai was trying to sound cool and deep to his fellow Sand Ninja, he had doubts if it was working though.

“Doesn’t matter what life throws at you, you have to learn how to deal with any disability in your body and your mind. That’s what being a ninja is all about.” The dwarf sand shifting his sunglasses. “But we should talk about this later, you should get to a hospital, and I guess I should get this wound of mine checked out. Don’t worry though, it’s just a flesh wound.” With his one good arm he pulled out a scroll and Skeleton poofed away. Then he connected charka strings to Dragon, and commanded it to walk towards Karasu. “Here, I can give you a lift if you want.” He didn’t want to move the other sand ninja unless he wanted to be moved.

The dwarf’s first words weren’t really touching for Karasu. Comparing a temporarily disabled arm to losing an arm all together just wasn’t correct in his eyes. Komakai’s wound could be healed by any decent medical-nin once they got to the hospital whereas the redhead had to live with a crippling handicap for the rest of his life. It couldn’t possibly be compared. No, Komakai’s first words only served as fuel for Karasu’s frustration, not that he could disagree as the paralyzing poison also prevented his facial muscles from working, disabling him from making any sounds other than grunts and hums.

It were his next words that made Karasu think. Dealing with a disability… would there be an easy way to reach his former level even considering what happened in Kawa no Kuni? And most importantly: would it be possible to do so in time for him to still participate in the chuunin exams? The part Komakai mentioned earlier about his puppet made him think. A puppet could attach and reattach its arms whenever its master pleased…

That thought alone was enough for Karasu to know what he should do.

In response to Komakai’s question about needing a lift, Karasu responded by the best ”Mhm” he could give without moving his mouth. He had little wish to remain here lying face-down in the sand with the heat of the desert sun burning on his back.

Komakai commanded his puppets to pick up his beaten opponent, and placed him on the dragon’s back. “Alright well then, to the hospital.” He said as he walked forward his puppet faithfully beside him. He didn’t really know what to say to someone whose assed he just kicked. It was ironic but small talk wasn’t really the dwarf’s forte. “You know fixing my other puppet is really gonna cost an ARM and a leg.” Puns were usually his go to thing, when he didn’t know what to say.

As the two puppeteers arrived closer to their destination, Komakai made a depressing realization. “You know, I beat you and there were no ladies present to witness it. If Hyouka was there to see that, she’d proably fall in love with me~.” Komakai sighed, beating Karasu with no witnesses wasn’t the best. Sure they’re was the personal satisfaction that he was better, but he always liked to be better infront of the ladies.

They finally made it to the hospital, inside they went and Komakai looked around. “We need some assistance, any pretty nurses able to help us.~” Komakai said still hopeful that this battle would still be able to get him laid. But to his disappointment the two nurses that came to help them were male. Komakai let out a sigh. “Well he’s poisned by my awesome toxic gas. But I’m kind of well ya know, bleeding out here. So some help would be nice.” One nurse took care of Komakai in another room, while the other took care of Karasu. Once Komakai was done, he waited in the waiting room, he wasn’t really waiting for Karasu he was still looking for some attractive nurses. His arm had healed up fine, and was bandaged but he would be able to take them off soon. It just made him look cool to have his arm bandaged up like it was.

The puppet lifted Karasu’s limp body onto its back, from where he silently stared at the passing sand down below as they made their way towards the hospital. The loose, thin sand that served as the floor of the training field made way for the more compacted sand of the streets of Sunagakure. Every now and then from the corner of his eye he would notice a foot or a leg passing by, indicating they were now near the center of the village. He felt embarrassed that everyone in the street was able to see him in a state like this.

”Mmmm”, the redhead annoyingly groaned at yet another pun cracked by the dwarf, who seemed to have a complete lack of feel for timing. While Karasu realized from his offer to carry the redhead back to the hospital as well as helping him train in the first place that Komakai was a well-meaning person, but his obnoxious behavior sometimes made that easy to forget.

“You know, I beat you and there were no ladies present to witness it. If Hyouka was there to see that, she’d proably fall in love with me~.”

”MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!”

When Komakai started about Hyouka, the green-eyed monster started roaring loudly in Karasu’s stomach. Given that his mood had already been terrible to begin with, if he had control over his body he would’ve grabbed the dwarf by his collar. But now all he could do to voice his anger was with a loud and angry moan.

When they reached the hospital, two male nurses were quick to arrive and Karasu was taken off the puppets back and into another room, where another nurse took a blood sample and studied it for a short amount of time. ”This shouldn’t be a problem.” He walked over to the shelves to retrieve some kind of antidote that he injected into Karasu’s remaining arm. The redhead could feel a warm sensation go through his muscles, and found himself quickly able to move his arm and legs again.

”There ya go. You might feel a bit stiff for a minute or ten, but that’s about it.”

Thanking the nurse, Karasu headed out into the hall, the sandstone that served as the basic building material for all of Suna giving it the village’s typical brownish-yellow color. Normally he would’ve quickly gone back to the training fields to continue his training, but there was something he wanted to ask the dwarf first. After some asking around he learned the room where Komakai’s wound was being treated and found him in the hallway leading to it heading back, his arm bandaged.

”Komakai-...senpai”, he started. He realized Komakai was his superior in age and experience, but it was hard to think of the punning dwarf as an upperclassman. ”There have been puppeteers that managed to successfully replace their lost limbs with puppet replica’s, right?”

Komakai was about to leave because there were no attractive nurses to show his battle wounds to. When he heard Karasu speak to him, he forgotten the boy could speak all he did through their entire trip here was groan.

“Komakai-...senpai”

Did someone just call him senpai? Komakai had never been a senpai before; no one had ever given him the respect he so rightfully earned. Yes this was the dawn of a new era in Komakai’s life, an age of superiority he so rightfully deserved. But being a senpai had many responsibilities and it was his duty to fulfill each one. ‘Senpei duty number one: Always answer questions that are asked of you by your charges.’

“You are correct young one. There have been a few famous puppeteer’s who have replaced their own limbs with puppet parts." Komakai then took a much more serious tone with his next statement. “And there was one who got rid of his worthless body and became a human puppet.” It was Komakai’s secret that he dreamed of doing this one-day. To get rid of his disabled body in exchange for a perfect one, that was one of his goals in life.

“Why do you ask? Do you want to replace your missing arm? If you need any help, your mighty senpei can guide you on the right path. But it will cost you of course.” As much fun as it was being a senpei, Komakai needed some money to fund his own puppet ambitions, so if the dwarf could score some cash or even parts out of the deal would be a win for him.

Komakai presented his hand for Karasu to shake it, but since Komakai was an social idiot, he didn’t realize that it was impossible for Karasu to shake his hand, since he was missing the arm to shake the dwarf’s with. “So, what do you say?”

When Komakai started calling him “young one”, Karasu immediately regretted calling the dwarf senpai. Ignoring the patronizing tone the fellow puppeteer had assumed, the redhead focused on the answer that was given, and it was an answer he liked. The “famous” part was a tad discouraging as Karasu was far from famous just yet, but he figured he would be able to pull it off.

Komakai’s tone got more serious, and Karasu caught on to his reference of Akasuna no Sasori, arguably Suna’s most dangerous and infamous missing-nin. It was indeed true that he had replaced his own body with a puppet, a secret that had finally been revealed after he died at the hands of Chiyo-baasama and Haruno Sakura, and Kankurou had brought the puppet back to Suna. He also caught how Komakai used the word “worthless” to describe the normal human body, something he found unnerving but decided not to mention. He figured Komakai wasn’t actually planning anything and the prospect of a puppet body just sounded cool to the dwarf.

Karasu’s eyes lit up as Komakai mentioned helping him out, and he was about to reply with a wholehearted “Yes please” when he mentioned money. For an instant a shadow crawled across his face, but he realized just as quick that he wouldn’t be able to do it without assistance, and requesting help at one of the many puppet workshops in the village would cost him even more than Komakai would ask.

Shaking Komakai’s hand with the wrong arm, he sealed the deal that would hopefully provide him with a solution for the upcoming chuunin exams.
