Title: Average litter sizes?

poisonpuff - January 20, 2011 08:44 PM (GMT)
What is the average litter size of a holland lop or any small-medium rabbit around the weight of a holland(3-4lb but sometimes they can be 2-3lb)? Meaning live kits. Thanks!

I would say anywhere from 2-6

yeah 2-6 is what I'd say too. But it can also depend on the line your working with and what age your doe and buck are and what kind of condition they're in.

Some lines tend to have larger litters I had a doe that had 2 litters of 8 and never lost one :) I've also had some does that only ever have 3 or 4. And I find they also have less babies the older they get, my mini rex doe had litters of 6,6,4,3, and 3. the older she got the less she had.

Ok, thanks everyone. Just wanted to know because it seems like all of the holland's litters are only like 3-4 and some only have 1 or 2 and sometimes they have bigger litters around 6-8 once in a while. The more babies the more to save for a barn if I have more money left over, and more cuteness! Lol. Anyone else's opinion or personal expieriences would help alot too! Everyone's input counts.

Here's a list of my 2010 and 2011 Jersey Wooly litters:
-1 DOA, 1 peanut, 1 live
-1 DOA
-3 DOA/lost to cold, 1 peanut
-2 DOA
-2 DOA, 1 live
-5 live(1 died a few days later)
-5 live
Not very good luck...

And my friend with Mini Rex usually has about 4 per litter. One doe recently had 10 though, and all made it.

My friends with Holland Lops usually have 1-5 per litter.

Good luck!! =D

Aww, that's not very good luck. What is a DOA?

DOA is Dead on Arrival ;)

My usually litter sizes have been 3-7 live kits. Only 2 DOA's (they were deformed) and 1 die after kindling since I started.

With Hollands, you also get peanuts that will die off. I think our average litter size is 2-5. After the peanuts die, usually 2-3 babies survive. If we are very lucky, we may have a litter of 4 surviors. The Hollands that have the larger litters usually are normals - meaning they don't carry the dwarfing gene - and don't give birth to peanuts.

I have netherland dwarfs and was breeding lionheads as well. Usually my litters run 2-3 1st time moms and 3-6 on experienced moms. Right now I have 4 litters in the barn, 2 1st time moms and 2 2nd time moms. One litter has 3 kits, the other 3 litters have 4 kits.
