Praesto is a non-canon weyr set in the early Tenth Pass.

It is currently kept a secret from the rest of Pern in hopes to remain pure and free of Secus Fever. To learn more about the history, click the link above or read the weyr's advert. If you would like to be one of the original transfers, PM me! This weyr is still a work in progress.

We are currently only accepting brown, blue, and green transfers. All candidates, wherhandlers, and weyrfolk are accepted. If you would like to apply for a leadership position, PM Jana. Check the news for more information on current affairs.

Cael had been searched not long after running away, and had settled in swiftly, which had kept her very, very busy for a good two hours, no minor amount of time. Now, however, she was bored.

Bored.

Bored.

Bored.

Ama was napping. Leeli was fluttering excitably through the Weyr, examining every nook and cranny. She couldn't even count on the silly flits to amuse her. Sighing, she tossed a crumpled up shirt at Ama. "Wake up, Amee. I'm bored."

The bronze lifted his head, chirruping mildly at her and giving her a slow, sleepy blink. She sighed, snatching the shirt back up and shoving it in with the rest of her clothing. "Come on, Ama. Let's go exploring."

Chirping lightly, the bronze fluttered over, settled onto her shoulder, and wound his tail around her neck, then settled in to sleep some more. It would prove difficult, however, as Cael's exploration brought her swiftly to the first path she stumbled upon that she didn't recognize. After some spelunking, she discovered that she appeared to have found ... quarters? Who kept quarters in a place like this? Dragonriders were in Weyrs. Candidates were in barracks. Drudges had rooms, but they weren't set up the way this hallway was, and, peering into the first open door she found, she noted that they also weren't this... spacious.

The way she leaned, however, upset Ama's place on her shoulder, and the flit tumbled off with a disgruntled squawk before righting himself to chitter angrily at her. "Ama, shhhh! Please!" she pled softly. She wasn't sure if anyone was home, and she really, really didn't want to get in trouble if someone was.

Hearing an odd sound, Sonniriel stood from where he had been sitting. Previously, he had been rolling up the new bandages he had received, sending Visionary to store them on the shelf. But at the unusual sound, he halted his activities. Beckoning to his green flitt, he sent her out into the hallway, curious as to what was stirring in the wher quarters. Most of the other handlers were still asleep. Normally, he would be too, but had been unable to stay asleep.

Visionary soon reappeared, chirping to let Sonni know she had returned. Holding out his arm, he knew the flitt would come to him, showing him what she had found. He smiled slightly at the image of a young girl and her flitt. "Hmm, well, let's go greet them before they get themselves int trouble." he murmured with a light chuckle, walking down the path he had memorized long ago, coming to the entrance of his quarters, knowing the girl to be just outside them. "Girl." he said softly. "It is not wise to wander around these quarters. The whers can be dangerous if they perceive you as a threat." he cautioned, sightless eyes staring at a spot just above the girl's head.

Cael blinked, cursing mentally. Well, so much for not being found out. She cast a disparaging eye over Ama, who she blamed entirely, before coughing and looking down at her toes like a good little girl, having not yet realized that the man was blind. (It was rather dark, after all.) Looking benign had worked for her in the past, so she supposed it would probably work, here, too. At the very least, it wouldn't hurt to try.

"I didn't mean to be a bother, sir," she offered timidly, hooking her hands behind her back. "I didn't know I was anywhere I oughtn't to be. It's just, Ama and I were exploring, y' see. We're kinda new here, and we didn't much know where anything was, and we just thought we'd try to find out, is all." It was feeble at best, she knew, but she couldn't think of anything else to say, and cuteness could always help.

Tilting his head in her direction, he listened intently to what she said, noticing small inflections in her voice. "I never said you were a bother, just that it is dangerous here." he corrected. "You must be a candidate. I didn't think A'gheri and Myrelli let them wander around like this. Have you even seen them yet? Well, no matter, I suppose. It won't hurt anything."

He turned, making as if to go back to his rooms, but paused. "Come with me. The others will be waking up soon. Sonnirisk and I will escort you to the barracks as soon as the sun goes down. For now, you can stay with me. I'll send Visionary to A'gheri to let him know where you are, as I am sure he's searching for you right now." He didn't mind looking after the girl. He didn't speak much with the candidates, so he figured time spent with her would be a bit interesting.

Moving back into his quarters, he motioned for the girl to follow him. Calling to his flitt, he sent her off to the candidate master, knowing she'd give him the image of the girl and himself. That done, he sat back down at his table. "What's your name?" he asked the girl, hearing her footsteps.

Caeloran blinked, then beckoned to Ama and followed after him. "Who'sat?" she asked brightly. "A'gheri? Myrelli? Sonnirisk? Is Visionary the flitter?" All this spilled out swiftly as she walked. The little bronze chirped mildly, fluttering over to land on her shoulder once more, and she stopped short beside the man's seat. "I'm Caeloran. Cael. What's your name?"

Now that they'd stopped and she wasn't staring at her toes, but was in relatively close proximity, she had a good chance to look the man over, and it was then that she finally noticed the milky film over his eyes. Well. So much for her acting. That was a waste of time, wasn't it? He was aweful young to be blind, though, wasn't he? The last blind man she'd known had been a granther. Passingly, she wondered what had happened, but it somehow seemed imprudent and terribly impolite--to impolite even for her--to ask.

Sonniriel frowned at her questions, then shrugged. Yes, she seemed to be very, very new. The rider who brought her hadn't even stuck around to show her the barracks, it seemed. Such irresponsible riders were going on search now. It gave Sonni such a headache. But never mind, he needed to answer her questions. "A'gheri is the candidate master who will be in charge of you until you become a weyrling. Myrelli is his assistant. Visionary is indeed my green." he said, voice pleasant enough.

He'd keep her with him until Sonnirisk could go out. The watch wher was behaved enough to act fine around most people, so he wasn't too worried about him bothering people while he left the bronze wher in the weyrbowl.

"Well, Caeloran, my name is Sonniriel. I am the handler of bronze watch wher Sonnirisk, and well as the wher quarters healer." he explained. "If you want to see, Sonnirisk is in the back, though he's probably still sleepy, so don't mess with him too much. Its too early for him to be fully up yet." Just then, Visionary returned, chirping an affirmative for her mission. "A'gheri seems fine with you staying here for now." he told to Cael. "So you won't be in trouble for not being where you're supposed to."

Caeloran, who had never seen a wher up close before and certainly hadn't been worried about getting in trouble (the thought never entered the girl's mind), barely heard Sonniriel's last comment as she skittered in the direction indicated to peer at the wher. Prudently, she gave him a good bit of distance and kept her mouth closed while she looked at him, but her curiosity on the matter was unmistakable.

Still, she didn't linger, and within minutes had returned to join Sonniriel. "Awful big, isn't he?" she observed brightly. "Never saw one up close, before. How come they've only got two toes, anyway? Kinda like runners, I guess--not that they've got toes, exactly, but kinda the same shape, innit? How old is he? Is he full grown, or is he gonna get even bigger?"

Normally, Cael wasn't quite this excitable, but it was her first time in a Weyr, her first time seeing a wher, and her first time doing any real exploring in ages, and she was still only twelve, after all. One could hardly hold it against her for being the child that she was.
