Search for Irish Tourist Missing in Yosemite
- Chronicle Staff Report Monday, April 17, 2000 YOSEMITE -- Search-and-rescue workers looked throughout Yosemite National Park yesterday for a missing Irish tourist who vanished more than a week ago. The tourist, Kieran Burke, 45, of Dublin, Ireland, disappeared on April 5 after he left Curry Village, where he was staying alone. Burke was going out for a day hike, said park spokeswoman Christine Cowles. Park staff notified authorities when Burke did not check out on April 6, when he was scheduled to leave. His tent still contained his possessions, Cowles said. Burke is described as 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with blue eyes and thinning black hair that hangs to his ears. He might be wearing a leather jacket and carrying a camera. Burke's brother, Lorcan Burke, arrived last week from Ireland to assist searchers. Kieran Burke is an experienced hiker and photographer who has previously hiked in the Himalayas, Cowles said. Park staff and Burke's family are asking the public's help in the search. Anyone who was in Yosemite on or after April 5 who might have seen Burke or inadvertently photographed or videotaped him in the background of any pictures, should call the park administration. ``Yosemite has 800 miles of trails, so we really need the public's help on this,'' said Cowles. ``The possibilities are limitless.'' The weather in Yosemite was sunny and warm the first few days after Burke's disappearance, but storms later in the week brought snow and rain, hindering search efforts. Cowles said an experienced hiker could survive this long in the wilderness, but the chances grow slimmer every day that Burke is missing.
