Missing Brooklyn Boy Believed To Have Run Away Reporting John Slattery NEW YORK (CBS) ¯ Patrick Alford, 7, was last seen at his foster mother's home in Brooklyn on Jan. 22, 2010. CBS Where is he? The search is on for a missing Brooklyn boy who apparently walked away from his foster mother on Friday night. It happened at the Spring Creek Towers at 130 Vandalia Ave., formerly known as Starrett City, where fliers are posted about the missing child, identified as 7-year-old Patrick Alford, who's not been seen since Friday night. Police said he'd been with a foster mother for only three weeks, during which time he'd threatened to run away, apparently to seek out his biological mother. Shamel McKee lives next door to the foster mother and was surprised to learn the boy may have ran off on his own. "The kid hasn't been here long. Every time I saw him, he seemed happy," he told CBS 2. The foster mother told police she last saw him about 9 p.m. on Friday. Neighbors said the foster mother came down the hallway with the boy, taking a bag of garbage to the trash compactor. When she turned around and went back into her apartment at the end of the hall, he wasn't with her. He'd disappeared. The woman had been taking in foster children for 20 years without incident. "I can't really fathom why he would want to run away. It's just sad," said McKee. Police say from the time he'd arrived, the boy had wanted to go back to his biological mother. Police contacted her, saying she's not seen the child. Some neighbors fear the worst and are gravely concerned, but hope the child is merely with friends. "Hopefully he'll come up unharmed," said neighbor Tyrone Samuels. "I hope they get him back and everything's OK," added neighbor Shirley Rosen. The boy, who is 4-foot-8 and 65 pounds, was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. An extensive search is underway; so far police have come up with nothing. Police said they have no leads as to whether the child might have been abducted. http://wcbstv.com/local/missing.child.patrick.2.1448546.html Attached Image ![]() |

Judge jails mother, believes she knows location of 7-year-old Patrick Alford
BY Barry Paddock, Michael J. Feeney and Jonathan Lemire DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Friday, January 29th 2010, 4:00 AM Jennifer Rodriguez, mother of missing 7-year-old Patrick Alford (below), is escorted by police from Staten Island Family Court. Oates for News The biological mother of a 7-year-old who vanished from his foster home last week has been jailed by a judge who insists she's hiding the child. Patrick Alford disappeared Friday night from the Brooklyn apartment building where he was placed with a foster family three weeks earlier. His mother, Jennifer Rodriguez, 23, lost custody after she was arrested on theft charges and the Administration for Children's Services decided she had neglected her son. The NYPD believes the boy may have run away alone and could be in danger. They deployed boats in the swamps near the foster family's Starrett City home and helicopters in the skies to search for him - but Patrick has yet to be found. ACS officials and Staten Island Family Court Judge Terrence McElrath - citing Rodriguez's statements to case workers and court officers - insist that Rodriguez knows where Patrick is. McElrath sent her to Rikers Island on Tuesday - and said yesterday he's keeping her there on contempt charges until the boy turns up. "Did she comply with order to produce the child? No," McElrath said. Being led out of the court, Rodriguez blurted out to reporters, "Get me out of here - call my aunt, she has him, she knows where he is." The aunt, Blanca Toledo, 51, told the Daily News from her Brooklyn home last night that she doesn't have the boy - and has already told that to cops multiple times. "My niece and I have a love and hate relationship," she said through tears. "I guess she has nothing else to say." Toledo, who cared for Patrick before he was put in foster care, said the family is furious at her because she told ACS about attempts Rodriguez allegedly made to "kidnap" the boy. Cops also interviewed a relative in Baltimore based on a tip - but he wasn't there, police said. Patrick was last seen with his foster mother, Librada Moran, 58, in the lobby of the Spring Creek Development at 9p.m. Friday, police said. "The foster mother was putting out the trash," said Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly. "Next thing you know, he's gone." jlemire@nydailynews.com With Sarah Armaghan Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2...l#ixzz0e0YRJkBW http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2...missing29m.html Attached Image ![]() |

Brooklyn mom denies involvement in case of missing son, but offers information on possible locations BY Barry Paddock and Christina Boyle DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS Saturday, January 30th 2010, 4:00 AM Patrick Alford Related NewsArticlesJudge jails mother, believes she knows location of 7-year-old Patrick AlfordA Brooklyn mom jailed in the disappearance of her 7-year-old son still denies she spirited him away from a foster home - but coughed up some addresses where he might be hiding. The judge who sent her to Rikers Island wasn't satisfied, and ruled Friday that Jennifer Rodriguez will stay behind bars at least until another hearing on Monday. "She wants to continue to cooperate. I've asked her to rack her brain," Rodriguez's lawyer, Anthony Morisano, said in Staten Island Family Court. "But she can only provide what she knows." The boy, Patrick Alford, vanished Jan. 22 from the lobby of the Spring Creek Development in Starrett City, Brooklyn, where he was living with a foster family. Rodriguez denied she had anything to do with it, but the Administration for Children's Services doesn't believe her, and Judge Terrence McElrath tossed her in jail for contempt. "I don't believe bail is appropriate under civil contempt," McElrath said as her lawyer pleaded for her release at a hearing Friday. "The purpose of civil contempt is to hold someone until they comply." Rodriguez lost custody of Patrick after she was arrested on theft charges and ACS found he was neglected and put him in foster care. The day after he disappeared, Rodriguez knocked on the door of the foster home - even though she supposedly didn't know where he lived, ACS caseworker Carlene Anderson testified Friday. Rodriguez had also asked her son in a phone call what public transportation he took while staying with the foster family. "The mother was trying to find out how they traveled," the caseworker said. Relatives say they found the foster family's apartment by accident - while handing out missing posters - and that Rodriguez was not with them. "I just hope he's safe, warm and okay," said Patrick's aunt Claudia Ortiz, 29. "He's a beautiful kid. He and his sister love, adore, their mother. "Jennifer would do anything for those kids," she said. The NYPD has been scouring the neighborhood and family addresses in Florida and Baltimore, hoping to find the grade-schooler. They have also deployed helicopters and boats in nearby swamps on the premise that Patrick wandered away on his own - which McElrath doubts. "I don't think a 7-year-old is out on his own in this cold weather caring for himself," the judge said. "He's with someone." Attached Image ![]() |

Brooklyn foster child Patrick Alford still missing as NYPD is mystified BY John Lauinger DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Sunday, February 28th 2010, 4:00 AM Despite an exhaustive month-long police search, the disappearance of Brooklyn foster child Patrick Alford remains a drama-filled mystery. Less than three weeks after being placed with a foster family in Starrett City, the homesick 7-year-old disappeared while taking out the garbage on the night of Jan. 22. In the weeks since, Patrick's biological family has waged a bitter finger-pointing battle, while police have pressed what NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne called "one of the most intensive searches for an individual in recent memory." Suspicion has surrounded Patrick's biological mother, Jennifer Rodriguez, who lost custody of her son after she was arrested on theft charges. Her aunt has blamed her in the disappearance, and a judge locked her up for contempt because she wouldn't divulge her son's whereabouts. "I had nothing to do with my son's disappearance," insisted Rodriguez, who passed a lie-detector test. "I believe that my son is still alive." Rodriguez rejected the idea that the boy - who had threatened to run away before - fled on his own and initially suggested her relatives were involved. She quickly contradicted herself, saying, "To my knowledge, no one in my family has my son." The pressure-packed investigation to find Patrick - which boasts a $12,000 reward - has been extensive. Cops have interviewed some 14,000 people and searched 214 buildings, knocking on 9,100 doors near the East New York foster home and Rodriguez's Staten Island home, police sources said. Seven registered sex offenders living near the foster family's apartment complex were interviewed, as were 28 bus drivers, employees of seven Brooklyn car services and 21 family members, friends and acquaintances. Cops also analyzed 81 surveillance videos, including one from the Staten Island Ferry terminal in Manhattan that showed a boy fitting Patrick's description being led away by a woman. His family says it's not him. Patrick's relatives say they are stumped and have numerous theories about what happened to him. The boy's father, also named Patrick Alford - who has since been granted custody of Patrick's younger sister - said he suspects Rodriguez and the foster mother were in cahoots, noting Rodriguez had foster mother Librada Moran's phone number. "Her [Moran's] whole story sounds ridiculous. It sounds fake," he said. "If he was threatening to run away, why would you bring him into the hallway [to take out the garbage] with you?" Rodriguez and her Brooklyn aunt Blanca Toledo have blamed each other in Patrick's disappearance. But Toledo doesn't rule out that the child ran away, saying his spirit seemed "broken" after he was placed with Moran, 58. "He wanted to come home," said Toledo. "This kid was out of it." Toledo has been visited at least nine times by detectives, but she says they are wasting their time. "The boy's not here - he's not here!" Toledo thundered. "I wish he was." If you have any information about the case, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. jlauinger@nydailynews.com With Barry Paddock http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/0...eployed_to.html NYPD revives search for missing foster child Patrick Alford; 100 cops deployed to seek leads By Sarah Armaghan, Randy Kreider and Jonathan Lemire DAILY NEWS WRITERS Originally Published: Wednesday, April 7th 2010, 1:10 PM Updated: Wednesday, April 7th 2010, 5:14 PM More than 100 police officers began sweeping a desolate swath of parkland near the Brooklyn-Queens border Wednesday in a desperate search for a 7-year-old foster boy missing for more than two months. Patrick Alford vanished from his foster mother's Starrett City home on January 22 and, despite one of the NYPD's most intensive manhunts for a missing person in recent years, the trail has gone cold. But as the weather has improved, cops turned out in full force in Gateway Park, fanning out through 100 acres of marshland to search the tall weeds with dogs as an NYPD helicopter thundered overhead. "It's going to be hard for me to hear bad news, but I need to hear some news about my son," said Patrick's mother Jennifer Rodriguez. Bones were found near the shoreline around 10 a.m. but it was not immediately clear if they were human or animal, police said. "This is all about letting the family know we haven't forgotten about him," said NYPD Deputy Chief Steven Silks. "We don't have any new leads or tips, we're just expanding our search. There's not going to be any leaf, any stone left unturned here." Other bones were found scattered throughout the massive park but investigators cautioned that the weeds - some of which grow up to 10 feet high - are littered with remains of small animals. Search teams from the city and federal Parks Departments were assisting with the search. A shovel was found buried under a piece of plywood in the park but its significance was not clear. "We're not giving up," said the boy's aunt Brenda Ortiz, 41. "I hope that they don't find anything and give us hope that he's still alive out there somewhere." Patrick vanished while taking out the trash from his foster mom's home and cops immediately focused their attention on his biological mother. Jennifer Rodriguez was temporarily locked up by a Staten Island family court judge who suspected she knew her son's whereabouts. But Rodriguez - who briefly claimed one of her relatives had Patrick, before retracting her statements - was later released. "We really hope he's somewhere healthy and safe, playing X-Box," Silks said. "This could be anyone's kid, their neighbor's kid, a loved one - we just want to do a diligent and thorough search here and not rush through it." Cops have interviewed about 14,000 people and searched more than 200 buildings near the East New York foster home and Rodriguez's Staten Island home, police said. Seven registered sex offenders living near the foster family's apartment complex were interviewed, as well as two dozen family members and friends, cops said. Alford, whose picture was distributed among onlookers curious about the massive show of police, was recently shown on America's Most Wanted in hopes that someone would recognize him. |

Family Offers Reward For Information On Missing Boy By: NY1 News The family of a boy who has been missing since January announced Saturday that it is offering a reward in hopes of finding him. Patrick Alford Junior’s family is offering $50,000 for any information leading to his recovery. Alford, 7, disappeared from a Starrett City foster home in January. "Someone in New York City has this information and it’s time they came forward,” said Robert Osuna, an attorney for the family. “Hopefully this inducement will make them come forward.” “We're trying to bring awareness,” said Alford’s mother Jennifer Rodriguez. “We need society to know this kid is still missing and we need everybody to know he needs to be found. It’s very important. This is tragic for me and my family." The money raised by the family will be combined with the police department's reward of $12,000. |

Mom mourns son, missing for nearly a year
By C.J. SULLIVAN, LARRY CELONA and LEONARD GREENE Last Updated: 6:29 AM, November 26, 2010 Posted: 2:07 AM, November 26, 2010 Comments: 26 More Print Jennifer Rodriguez remembers her son, Patrick Alford, blowing out the candles on his white-frosted birthday cake last year, then rushing out to play on his brand-new skateboard. But there will be no cake for his birthday Sunday. Two months after the Staten Island boy turned 7, he vanished. And despite one of the police department's most exhaustive searches in missing-person memory, including 1,000 interviews, and queries as far away as Florida and Puerto Rico, Patrick is no closer to being found than the day he disappeared from the Brooklyn foster home, where he was staying after Rodriguez lost custody. Chad Rachman HEARTACHE: Mom Jennifer Rodriguez (above) wears a T-shirt that is a desperate plea for the return of her son, Patrick. When Patrick turns 8, Rodriguez won't be celebrating. She ignored Thanksgiving, and without her boy, Christmas and New Year's are just a couple of days on her calendar. "His birthday is a tragedy to me this year," she said. "I'm not thankful for anything. I don't even know if my son is alive." Much happened between the day Rodriguez sang "Happy Birthday" in her Staten Island home and the day Patrick disappeared from the East New York apartment building. After Rodriguez, 23, a single mother, was arrested in December on a shoplifting charge, Patrick and his sister, Jailene, were sent by the city's child welfare agency to live with Librada Moran, a foster-care provider. It was there on Jan. 22 that the homesick boy was last seen. "I would tell Patrick, 'I'm sorry,' " Rodriguez said. " 'I'm sorry I failed you as a mother. I'm going to do my best to find you.' " Last month, Rodriguez sued the city and its child-welfare agency, saying they failed to properly care for the boy. She also criticized investigators for focusing, at first, on her. "The police treated me like a suspect," Rodriguez said. "I felt like a piece of garbage. I am his biological mother, and I was the one who sought out help on my own. The city's foster agency is there to protect children, and they didn't do that for Patrick." Rodriguez is marking Patrick's birthday with an awareness walk to her home from the ferry terminal a mile away. She will follow up the walk with another march on Jan. 22 -- the day Patrick disappeared. "I am brokenhearted," Rodriguez said. "I need to find my son." cj.sullivan@nypost.com http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/staten_...DKsvlYIcYyzKTlO |

The Staten Island mother whose son's disappearance nearly a year ago set off one of the largest NYPD manhunts in recent memory was arrested for threatening a boyfriend with a knife, officials said Tuesday. Jennifer Rodriguez, whose 8-year-old son Patrick Alford vanished from foster care in January, allegedly waved the blade at her lover and screamed "You're not getting your f---ing money back," according to court documents. Rodriguez, 23, was charged with menacing, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment, according to a spokesman for the Staten Island District Attorney. Prosecutors said Rodriguez let Sehadi Gjeshditraj stay at her Van Buren St. apartment Sunday night, and the man realized hours later he left his wallet behind. When he tried to retrieve it, Rodriguez allegedly confronted him with the blade and refused to give back his money. The woman - who fell under suspicion when her son disappeared but was never charged - was arrested at her home just before 9 p.m. Her arraignment was delayed because she checked into Elmhurst Medical Center with an undisclosed ailment, according to the DA's spokesman. Patrick was placed with a foster family in East New York just three weeks before he disappeared while taking out the trash Jan. 22. Police knocked on more than 14,000 doors and conducted more than 6,000 interviews during the intensive search, which stretched from East New York to Puerto Rico. Authorities were so convinced that Rodriguez was hiding Patrick that a Staten Island judge briefly jailed her for contempt as authorities canvassed her New Brighton neighborhood. She was later released and has claimed to have passed two lie-detector tests about her son. This week's arrest is not the first time Rodriguez has run afoul of the law. She was busted earlier this year for aggravated harassment after she attacked a romantic rival. She was also arrested a year ago for shoplifting, and Patrick was taken from her custody after she admitted to a drug problem. In October, she sued the city and the Administration for Children's services, claiming that Patrick was given to a unfit guardian. jlemire@nydailynews.com http://www.nydailynews.com/news/ny_crime/2...ing_knife_.html |

Mom of missing boy Patrick Alford, 7, blames complex's faulty security cameras for disappearance
BY John Marzulli DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER Friday, November 26th 2010, 4:00 AM The suit, filed by Jennifer Rodriguez, the mother of the boy missing since January, claims security cameras were not working at 130 Vandalia Ave. "and failed to capture the entry and exit of persons entering and exiting the building." But lawyers for Starrett City Inc. have fired back, arguing the complaint contains factual errors. Starrett City will be seeking sanctions against Rodriguez's lawyer for filing a "frivolous" lawsuit. Lawyer Joshua Lindy said there is no evidence that Patrick "disappeared inside the building" as the suit contends. "There are no security cameras inside the building. ... 130 Vandalia Ave. does not have any security cameras," Lindy wrote to Judge John Gleeson. He added, "Indeed there is no duty imposed on any security to 'safeguard' a child who leaves premises, when there is no evidence that the child left involuntarily." Patrick was in the care of foster mother Librada Moran and reportedly vanished while taking out the garbage. The NYPD has been stumped by the case, conducting thousands of interviews and searching hundreds of buildings and wide swaths of East New York. Rodriguez lost custody of her son after she was arrested on a theft charge. jmarzulli@nydailynews.com http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brookl...issing_boy.html |

Foster fiasco
Boy on run two years after ‘bungle’ By MITCHEL MADDUX Last Updated: 3:35 AM, December 5, 2011 Posted: 2:22 AM, December 5, 2011 More Print It’s a colossal foster-care nightmare that ended with the disappearance of a 7-year-old boy two years ago — and it didn’t have to happen. Top-notch lawyers appointed by a judge to represent the interests of missing Patrick Alford claim that the child, who vanished from his Brooklyn foster home, could have been safe today if not for glaring missteps by city child-welfare workers. The lawyers argue that the employees with the city’s Administration for Children’s Service outrageously misled the Family Court in their bid to prove the child was in danger and even required placement in foster care in the first place. SAD: Mom Jennifer Rodriguez hopes for the return of Patrick (below), as ACS is under fire for putting him in foster care. NY Post: Chad Rachman SAD: Mom Jennifer Rodriguez hopes for the return of Patrick (below), as ACS is under fire for putting him in foster care. It’s not clear why the workers did what they did to justify taking the boy. But they failed to disclose to a Family Court judge that, at the time, the child had actually been living at an aunt’s house and not with his mother, who was battling drug-addiction problems, lawyer Jonathan Lerner argued in papers filed in Brooklyn federal court. Child-welfare workers lied in a sworn affidavit by “falsely representing to the court†there was “an imminent danger to the child’s life†if he was not immediately removed, “when in truth†young Patrick “was in no danger, imminent or otherwise, from continuing in his aunt’s care,†the documents state. Lerner, a senior attorney at the white-shoe firm of Skadden Arps now serving as pro-bono counsel for the child, said ACS “made no assessment†that the aunt’s temporary custody of the boy “posed any danger†when its workers decided to seize Patrick on Dec. 29, 2009. When ACS workers met again with the aunt two weeks later, they even deemed her suitable to serve as a temporary guardian for the boy. But for reasons that are unclear, the child nevertheless continued to remain in the foster home until his disappearance, Lerner wrote in the scathing court papers. Patrick, who would now be 9 years old, was last seen on the night of Jan. 22, 2010, after he apparently slipped off while taking out the trash with his foster mom at her East New York home. Adding to the debacle, ACS put him with a foster mother who spoke only Spanish, even though Patrick spoke only English. The child, who had documented emotional and educational issues, was so unhappy that he began to experience psychiatric problems and tried to run away on several occasions. Despite a psychologist’s assessment that the boy urgently needed medication and psychiatric care, ACS failed to take immediate action to help the boy, Lerner charged. This chain of events prompted a federal judge overseeing the lawsuit about the child’s disappearance to suggest that — if proven — the city could be liable for damages. Lawyers for the city strongly dispute the claim that ACS workers deliberately misled a Family Court judge and contend that facts arose that led them to believe that leaving Patrick with relatives was not a good option. mmaddux@nypost.com Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brookly...N#ixzz1gIT8zdRd http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brookly...Y60swRmOCmHCVXN |

Photo: Patrick Alford. Police officers searching for the boy Sunday night found themselves in the middle of a "gang-related gunfight," according to the New York Daily News. An officer fired a single shot, but no one was hit. Three teens were arrested and two firearms were seized, according to the paper. The shootout was just the latest drama in the 11-day search for the missing boy. Last week, helicopters and police dogs searched nearby neighborhoods and swamps, but found nothing. And Friday, Alford's biological mother, Jennifer Rodriguez, was jailed by a Staten Island family court judge who believes she is hiding the child from police, according to the the New York paper. She is being held in contempt of court. Her son was placed with a foster family last month after the 23-year-old mother was arrested on theft charges. Police say he had threatened to run away from the foster home because he wanted to be with Rodriguez. According to the New York paper, police believe the boy may have left on his own freewill and could be in danger. The 7-year-old was last seen taking out the trash at his foster home Jan. 22, according to CBS affiliate WCBS. Alford is described as 4-foot-8 and 65 pounds, with a scar on his left eyebrow. He was last seen wearing a red t-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. The foster mother tells the police that Patrick and her went to the trash compactor outside the New York Spring Creek Development home around 9 p.m. She went back into the apartment and Patrick was not with her. When she goes back out, she couldn't find him. She tells the police that Patrick had been trying to run away since the day she took him in and that he was trying to get back to his mom. Patrick had only been living with his foster parents for 3 weeks when he disappeared. Police began to suspect Jennifer Rodriguez, Patrick Alford's mother of hiding him. Rodriguez lost custody of Patrick after she was arrested on theft charges and they found he was being neglected. She denied she had anything to do with it, but authorities did not believe her as she appeared at the door of the foster home the next day. The judge put her in jail for contempt, but she was released later after passing a polygraph test. Advertisement Patrick's relatives have accused each other of hiding him, but the bottom line, no one knows where he is at. The police have interviewed over 14,000 people and searched more than 200 buildings near the East New York foster home and the Staten Island home where Rodriguez lives. If you have any information please contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPPS. |

NYPD cops hope that recent developments in the Etan Patz case will spark a possible new lead in the disappearance of 7-year-old Patrick Alford from Brooklyn more than two years ago. Patrick went missing from his foster home in East New York on Jan. 22, 2010, while taking out the trash around 9 p.m. “It’s been an exhaustive search, and it continues to go forward,” Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said of Patrick during a press conference today, in which he also spoke about the 33-year-old case of Etan and his now-confessed alleged killer, Pedro Hernandez. “We are hopeful that the attention to Etan Patz’s case may jolt someone’s memory or may just give us the opportunity to get more information coming in,” Kelly said. In the two years since Patrick's disappearance, police have received more than 50 tips about the case, Kelly said. All of the leads are followed up by the department's Missing Persons Bureau, he said. “We are certainly not going to give up. We are going to continue to actively investigate this case,” Kelly said. There is a $12,000 reward associated with this case. Anyone with information is asked to call (800) 577-TIPS. Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/brookly...K#ixzz1wMCKSi9j |
